On 20th anniversary of Crown Heights riots, some Jews see a pogromBy Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor (CNN) - Friday marked the 20th anniversary of the Crown Heights riots in Brooklyn, New York, a three-day spell of violence set off when a Hasidic Jewish driver accidentally struck and killed a black youth, 7-year-old Gavin Cato. As rumors spread that the death was intentional and that a Hasidic ambulance crew declined to help the boy, some of the neighborhood’s African-Americans reacted violently, with one group killing a 29-year-old Jew named Yankel Rosenbaum. The anniversary has provoked lots of commentary on Jewish websites, with prominent Jewish writers recasting the riots as a pogrom, a word that connotes anti-Jewish violence. ![]() The Joplin Family Worship Center has collected more than $5 million in donations from across the country. Faith and church still helping lead tornado response in JoplinBy Ninette Sosa, CNN Joplin, Missouri (CNN) - On May 22, this blue-collar town on the edge of the Ozark Mountains was dealt the most deadly tornado since modern record-keeping on twisters began in 1950. The tornado killed 150 and injured more than 1,000. After the disaster, the parking lot at the Joplin Family Worship Center became a donation center geared toward helping tornado victims. The church has more than 7,000 volunteers who have served thousands of people with everything from food, to clothing to appliances. Tractor-trailers with supplies totaling more than $5-million have dropped off donations from around the country. Princeton Review ranks most and least religious schoolsBy John Blake, CNN (CNN) - Bennington College students recently learned that their Vermont school had received an honor that some might consider dubious: They attend the least religious college in America, according to an annual educational survey. Bennington’s selection was part of an intriguing national survey listing the Top 5 colleges in the U.S. for most and least religious students. The survey is part of a larger study conducted by the Princeton Review, a Massachusetts-based educational services company, for its new book, “The Best 376 Colleges: 2012 edition.” |
