Glenn Beck: Hurricane Irene is a 'blessing'By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor Conservative radio host Glenn Beck told listeners Friday that Hurricane Irene, the Category 1 storm that’s working its deadly way up the Eastern Seaboard, is “a blessing from God.” Beck has long urged his fans to stockpile food in their homes in anticipation of a global food disruption. He said Irene should be construed as a divine warning for those who have ignored that advice. Here’s Beck on his show Friday:
The Washington Post reports that in encouraging home stockpiling, Beck, a convert to Mormonism, is echoing Mormon church teaching. The church encourages members to build home storehouses of food that could last for at least three months. According to a website run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the official name of the Mormon church:
The site includes a food storage calculator. To build a three-month supply of food for a family of four, the calculator recommends 300 pounds of “wheat, white rice, corn and other grains” and 60 pounds of “dry beans and other legumes.” The Post notes that food storage is one pillar of the Mormon emphasis on self-reliance. |

God forbid we should actually have such a crisis. Instead of helping their neighbors all the Beckheads will be hoarding food and shooting anyone that comes near it. Frankly I'd rather die.
His methods are gleaned straight from the Mormon church, hoard food and keep your guns loaded with plenty of ammo to protect that food. Christian behavior? Not hardly
It's not fair to lambast an entire organization due to the actions of one man. I've known some perfectly normal mormons. Even Romney and Huntsmen don't act like this, and they have the media spotlight on them all the time.
Sfe....you obviously haven't been in the trenches with the Mormons to know what they really ascribe to. Spend some time around them, as a member and they'll the real Mormon ideology will emerge quite clearly. Until you've done that, you're clueless!
LaGryphon – funny, i dont even have a gun and dont recall anyone telling me to get one. there is no doubt beck is an idiot, but please get your facts straight before you write that type of inflammatory drivel.
jb....I've lived in that cult and I know what they ascribe to...the facts are at the top of the list for storage is guns and ammunition and unless you are carrying a temple recommend you won't be given any food even if you are starving....straight from the pulpit. You must be a Mormon apologist on this site trying to cover up the real Mormon ideology. Keep trying, although the world will mostly see you as crackpots anyway.
LaGryphon – not apologetic for anything least of all this....you are an outright liar. when i was a kid, the church welfare saved my family from starving (my dad wasnt even in church then) and ive seen neighbors (non members) get food from the church. also, guns have never ...and will never...be in my house, nor has anyone i know ever been directed to do so.
im fine with people not understanding or even not accepting...but to accuse my family of being something that they arent is offensive and points that you dont have any concept of what a mormon is...or isnt.
This man is scary.
Glenn Beck is Mormon? That partially explains his delusional rantings then.

The idiot strikes again.
So...are YOU prepared for a disaster, Mr Patriot? Would you and your family be able to survive if something catastrophic should happen? Or would you be one of those patriots who takes his gun and kills some other American to steal his food and water because you were too stupid to listen to common sense?
Yeah, you just stand there and wave your flag, numb nuts.
You think this is fun? Wait till 2012 rolls around and the crazy shifts in to high gear.
And it will, too. Lots of people believe that 2012 End-of-the-World crap just like they believed 1999 would bring destruction. Arm yourselves and be ready for the kooky dolts.
What a FOOL that GB!
Didn't he get the memo that Uncle Sam will save us.
My first move in a post-apocalyptic environment will be to kill a couple of these kooks and steal their food!
Unless one of them (and many are armed) happily and thankfully blows you away first.
There are more of us than there are of you. We're not afraid of your puny weapons. We have the devil on our side.
Why is CNN still giving the pathetic, racist psychopath known as Beck a forum? We finally got rid of him on FOX, but he keeps popping up here for some reason or another...
Bryd,
It is all about the RATINGS. This guy commands ratings=$$$
Well Reverend Beck, what other off-the-wall information can you give us about YOUR god? Please...next time, preach your words outside your home doorstep. Many of us are tired of the insaneness you create.
Actually, his off-the-wall information about his God comes to you by way of CNN; you'd have never known what he said unless you listened to his show or read this "story"
Are YOU ready for a disaster? Will you and your 5 have enough to eat if something should happen? Will you have enough water? Medical supplies? Shelter? Or will you laugh uproariously remembering the lunacy of Mr Beck as your family dies around you because you were too stupid and arrogant to be prepared? Religion had nothing to do with it.
So ask yourself, will you continue to be a Mom of 5 living people of a Mom of 5 corpses?
Magniloquent, bombastic, pompous...and God sent this hurricane along just so I could say "I told you so". Greater love hath no man than Beck for Beck. You people that actually listen to this gas bag need to have your heads examined.
How prepared are YOU, David, for a disaster? Or will you be one of those grasshoppers who starves while all the ants are safe and warm and fed because you were too stupid to listen to common sense?
Keeping a emergency food supply is the smart thing to do. After living threw two of the greatest disasters last century in the US I know the importance of having at least enough food/water stored back in case of an emergency. I personally try to keep at least a months worth of canned and dry food on hand at any given time and enough water to last a few weeks. Even if there isn't a emergency this food can help you threw hard times, if you lose your job and are having a hard time finding another one, at least you wont starve and have that extra burden. It's helped me out many times, it isn't crazy to be prepared for disaster, it's crazy not to.
Good advise from someone who has experience (unfortunately). I'd sooner hear from folks, like you, who unfortunately have had to deal with disasters first hand. Hope all is well.
Jeez, people! It's "through", not "threw", and "advice", not "advise". I can't believe they let cretins like you even post here. Please learn how to use the correct words. Then maybe someone will take your posts seriously.
@DerWeissEngle – Your spelling- and grammar-Nazi skills will get you far when disaster strikes.
Any true Christian knows that God does not cause these disasters as reminders, or to teach people a lesson. This guy is like the self righteous religions leaders that had Jesus killed. Beck is an apostate.
According to the bible he sent forth the great flood of Noah, set loose the plagues against Pharaoh of Egypt, covered Sodom and Gomorrah in fire and brimstone to punish man for his sins.
Have you read the Bible? It contains numerous stories of disasters and plagues intended to teach man a lesson by God
I always like to toke up on a big spliff before a bible-reading session. It puts me further out into fantasy-land.
And you're an ignoramus, Albert. You're listening to the words instead of the message.
The point is to BE PREPARED. Hopefully that message will sink in, but I doubt it.
Is there anyone out there that can see the harm this idiot does to the masses ? This guy needs to be put away !!
What an ego on this stupid jerk!!!!!!
@Mortamus – what harm is he doing, exactly? Telling people to be prepared for a disaster is harming them? Or are you so self-righteous and high and mighty that common sense is beneath you? Are you prepared? If disaster strikes tomorrow will you and your family survive or die for want of a few supplies?
This jerk is a real sicko !!!!!! ....and the idiots that follow him are even sicker !!!!!
Joe, are you arguing that what he is saying about preparedness is wrong? Or are you just calling him a jerk because you don't like him? Are you prepared? Or will you be one of those who waits for Uncle Sam when things get tough? Somehow I think the latter.
The part that is scary is that there are many people in the USA who actually listen to him, We are a nation of crazy people, overweight, under educated with too many worthless colleges and degrees. It is all fake like Wall Street. We have too many people like Beck who are using the media to exploit the many stupid people in America. Like Palin, Bachmann and many more Beck is a parasit feeding off the gulible Americans.
Did the Angel Moron tell him this?
LOL
Your ignorance is showing. What? Oh, you always dress that way. Figures.
You can almost see the self-righteous pomposity oozing out of him. Disgusting.
Beck is not the only crazy, why does CNN continually follow this guy around and put his quotes in the front internet headlines? Be assured there are millions of true Christians of many Faiths gathered across this Nation this morning
in the Name of the Living God and His Son Jesus Christ praying for victims of this storm and the pundits who will not
hearken unto His calling. And they do this out of love not hate as portrayed on this site. There have been imitaters and
"scoffers" since Noah and there will be until we see Jesus, but we LOVE you in spite of your hating. There is no defense
against "Love". We love you anyway!
See, it's that EXACT kind of posturing and self-righteous "I'm so much better than you" BS that makes Christianity so freaking hard to stomach. You don't sound like a good person. You sound like an arrogant fool.
Religious arguments aside, Beck's stating what should be common sense. It's the fool who scoffs at good advice and then finds themselves unprepared when disaster strikes and ends up starving or killing someone else for their food.
Why are you giving this guy headlines?
