Glenn Beck: Hurricane Irene is a 'blessing'By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor Conservative radio host Glenn Beck told listeners Friday that Hurricane Irene, the Category 1 storm that’s working its deadly way up the Eastern Seaboard, is “a blessing from God.” Beck has long urged his fans to stockpile food in their homes in anticipation of a global food disruption. He said Irene should be construed as a divine warning for those who have ignored that advice. Here’s Beck on his show Friday:
The Washington Post reports that in encouraging home stockpiling, Beck, a convert to Mormonism, is echoing Mormon church teaching. The church encourages members to build home storehouses of food that could last for at least three months. According to a website run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the official name of the Mormon church:
The site includes a food storage calculator. To build a three-month supply of food for a family of four, the calculator recommends 300 pounds of “wheat, white rice, corn and other grains” and 60 pounds of “dry beans and other legumes.” The Post notes that food storage is one pillar of the Mormon emphasis on self-reliance. |

The Village Idot speaks and guess what? A news media outlet covers him...again. WHen is Palin going to comment? Do you have a reporter waiting for her statement? I do hope so.....
Is Sarah Palin were ugly, she would have faded out of the media landscape a long time ago.
A blessing would be Glen saying a prayer, and the storm immediately turning around, and heading out to sea. Let's see him do that.
I believe in God 100% but I don't understand the Mormon faith. It seems to be as controversial as Scientology.
Beck has been scaring people way before his debut on fox news...nothing new.
*and then the real.....
Glenn Beck and his followers are not much smarter than my dog Lucy. She cowers in the corner when she sees lighting and hears thunder.
You got that right. Fox Newspublicans are exactly like dogs. You can't reason with a dog, or discuss issues intelligently with a dog. But you can scare the crap out of a dog until it does what it's told...... just like the sheeple of the right wing.
If it's such a blessing, let's tie him to a power line in a town that's gonna be hit the hardest so he can really take it in
You never wish harm on someone because of their words, even if it may seem like they deserve it.
toast
I stored food during hurricane Andrew many years back. Every house on my block was destroyed. It took 6 months to get running water again and the food we had "saved" was either destroyed or not found. With the way the worlds economy is now, if you have the means to give DO IT. Help your fellow man. Don't wait until disaster strikes. Someday it might be you on the receiving end.
Beck panders to his fear driven extremist base and is only in it for the money.
I don't care for Mr. Beck at all.l Calling the hurricane a blessing seems a stretch. I do agree with Beck and The Mormons about food stockpiling. It's the only intelligent thing to do in a world constantly in flux. Always be prepared! The media has spun all talk of preparedness to equate its proponents as religious fanatics or crackpots lunatics. This is wrong. Mr. Beck may be a looney tune but the mainstream media in the United States is hard at work for the same corporations that pay Beck and give him his script. All a pathetic drama, scripted by morons.
It's probably good to have some canned goods and such. But you don't need to buy that $300 (I think) food backpack that had, among other things, Beef Stroganof. The money you save on not buying that will get you a pretty good emergency radio, and some other supplies.
Stockpiling is a waste of time and energy. Why go through all of that mess when you can loot. The New Orleans Police department had several officers out looting during Katrina. The power was out. The food was going to spoil anyhow. Why let it sit there and waste when the people can use it. Save your loot and loot.
The blessing will be when the media quits covering this charlatan and we never have to read or comment about him again.
How crazy can one individual be? This has GOT to be an award winner! Devastation to property, public systems and loss of life a good thing b/c it confirms his predictions about stockpiling????? A complete loon. This is a dis-service by the media to spread this crap.
Oh, I don't know that he's so crazy. He sounds pretty conformist to me as far as the "our current woes are the result of not groveling to the fantasy sky-fairy enough" spin. That's exactly the same bull all religious "leaders" use on the weak-minded fools that follow them. Beck is just shooting his mouth off, knowing that the idiots in the media will lap it up and spew it all over the nation, to his pleasure at being promoted for free. As many others have pointed out; he should be ignored.
This is not the forum your looking for. You should probably find somewhere that's debating religion, not Beck.
Hmm.. I don't believe in Sky Ferries either.. I do however believe in the truth of Jesus Christ and God the father. Mormons are not Christians.. as for all this, the Bible does teach us that we should save for the rainy days so to speak. As for the media.. It seems we're getting much more coverage than we did for Katrina.. and Katrina was 20 times worse than this storm.
yes because when massive flooding comes your way, the one thing you want is a lot of food stored underground.
LOL.
People, People, People, Glenn Beck clearly angers most of you. So why do you read articles about him and then complain that CNN gives him time and then comment on it even? Your just looking for something to be enraged about. can't you just be happy?
You can stop trolling now.
K, I'm out. Getting bored anyway.
EXACTLY!
I believe Beck to be essentially a hack DJ with an obsessive personality. Once he turned to politics, he found a "schtick" that found an audience. Once his fans started to believe, he actually started to believe his own rants. Hubris took over as the attention grew, and what started as schtick became reality for him. Just a hack DJ with an obsessive personality.
Does anyone still care what this guy says?
You must or you would not be reading this.
You CNN readers are a bunch of foolish drones. You reacted exactly the way the writer, Dan Gilgoff, wanted you to react. They take a quote from his radio show, misquote him, take the whole thing out of context, throw a "Moses" type picture up from a completely different speech and you all play right into it. Beck is not the fool.....you readers with all these hateful remarks are. If anything, these comments expose the foolishness of yourselves, NOT Beck.
With people like Beck, it's never about politics. It's about ego and attention. He must find a way to fill his obsessive personality, now that he is sober. You're right, he's not a fool, he's just a guy who craves attention and started to believe his own BS. If being liberal brought him more attention to fuel the ego, he'd eageirly be a flaming liberal.
This guy is a fruitcake and he has been for years now.. and a self promoting fruitcake at that The people that listen to this guy are idiots...
Glenn Beck is always out of context. Obviously an insane man. As other comments say, why write an article about a man which has no sense in his thoughts, and most likely will end up leading a cult for himself and a bunch of other complete idiots?
I used to watch Mr. Beck. It was funny watching him rant about his conspiracies, like he was in his own world. Then he started bringing god into all of his rants and I started thinking "he's not just embellishing and lying for ratings or something, he genuinely thinks he's on a mission from God." It was frightening, this man was the second most watched man in "news." Anyway, this comment shows how he doesn't realize that your not supposed to go on your rants when a tragedy is afoot, especially if the rant is about the tragedy, during the tragedy. In other news, up here in New York, this hurricane was overblown, it's just a bad storm and a colossal mess on the lawn. Media will do anything for ratings. I guess Mr. Beck isn't alone.
So how much OXY-COTON (or whatever he is on) will Glenn need for three months?
How is it necessary to use ALL CAPITAL LETTERS for a medicine? Grammar, people.
Also, Oxy-Cotin is a painkiller. I think your looking for perhaps an antidepressant, like Prozac, Zoloft, or an antipsychotic, like lithium.
ISadly his message is offensive that God has sent a message. No, its called weather. And while its good to have food stocked to a point, I dont buy into this guys gloom and doom. People like this like to peddle some sort of counter message to make money. Its hard to this Beck seriously... AT ALL!! Yes, Sfe, ALL CAPS, get over it. Its the interenet and nothing is formal here. Peddle your English class lessons at school. 🙂
Glen Beck is a clown and not even a good one at that! CNN....why do you give him air time? His credibility, if he ever had any is gone. He's a lunatic just waiting for the right moment to have a very public meltdown!
