Glenn Beck: Hurricane Irene is a 'blessing'

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

Conservative radio host Glenn Beck told listeners Friday that Hurricane Irene, the Category 1 storm that’s working its deadly way up the Eastern Seaboard, is “a blessing from God.”

Beck has long urged his fans to stockpile food in their homes in anticipation of a global food disruption. He said Irene should be construed as a divine warning for those who have ignored that advice.

Here’s Beck on his show Friday:

How many warnings do you think you’re going to get, and how many warnings do you deserve? This hurricane that is coming thorough the East Coast, for anyone who’s in the East Coast and has been listening to me say ‘Food storage!’ ‘Be prepared!’

… If you’ve waited, this hurricane is a blessing. It is a blessing. It is God reminding you — as was the earthquake last week — it’s God reminding you you’re not in control. Things can happen. Be prepared and be someone who can help others so when disaster strikes, God forbid, you’re not panicking.

The Washington Post reports that in encouraging home stockpiling, Beck, a convert to Mormonism, is echoing Mormon church teaching. The church encourages members to build home storehouses of food that could last for at least three months.

According to a website run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the official name of the Mormon church:

Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful earth, with all its abundance, for our benefit and use. His purpose is to provide for our needs as we walk in faith and obedience. He has lovingly commanded us to “prepare every needful thing”… so that, should adversity come, we can care for ourselves and our neighbors and support bishops as they care for others.

The site includes a food storage calculator. To build a three-month supply of food for a family of four, the calculator recommends 300 pounds of “wheat, white rice, corn and other grains” and 60 pounds of “dry beans and other legumes.”

The Post notes that food storage is one pillar of the Mormon emphasis on self-reliance.

Beck is a curse to Christianity, a true wolf in sheep's clothing, a false prophet above all else. His only god is his ego. God never told anyone to "prepare", he said he would provide everything we ever needed and never to worry.

It says a lot about the Tea Party that their heroes are Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin™, and Michele Bachmann. And what it says is not pretty.

Hahaha – "and support bishops". Way to work the system, Latter Day Saints.

How is that "working the system?" Do you even know what he's saying?

Specifically asking people, in a time of crisis, to have enough on hand to take care of the church leaders? I'll let you use your vast insight to figure out how that's using and abusing followers to serve the interests of the few elite.

When Beck says "support your bishops" he means in the same sense as "support your president." Mormons have a lay ministry. All bishops have regular jobs and get no support from the church or members of their congregations. You might try educating yourself about something before spouting opinions about it, especially disparaging opinions.

Wow, you got this all wrong. Bishops during a time of need are in charge of distributing necessities to the people he in their congregations. What that statement means is that they support the bishop by supplying food and water to be distributed to those who don't have any.

He's not just an idiot, he's possibly the biggest con man in history. Armed with no credentials or experience in anything except spouting opinions he's managed to convince millions of people he's one of the greatest thinkers of our time and made a fortune doing it. Is it any wonder this country is in trouble?

do they understand that wheat and rice eventually go bad? Do they eat through the food and stockpile it again? It sounds like it's pretty wasteful to me. And what the he l l good is it going to do to have all that wheat when most people wouldn't have the first clue what to do with it.

"do they understand that wheat and rice eventually go bad?"

Properly stored wheat, and rice and many other foods can be good for decades.

"Do they eat through the food and stockpile it again?"

Depends on the food. Anything with a limited shelf life is eaten and replaced.

"It sounds like it's pretty wasteful to me."

That's because you're forming an opinion before educating yourself about it.

"And what the he l l good is it going to do to have all that wheat when most people wouldn't have the first clue what to do with it."

People who store wheat have a wheat grinder. Many of them grind wheat on a regular basis and use the flour to make bread. You really should try learning about something before forming opinions.

Of course we know food goes bad, we eat through it and restock. The food is not wasted and you are prepared for *something*. *something* doesn't have to be a hurricane, it could be a job loss and you need to save money. Other than calling a hurricane a blessing, [which of course is immediately picked up as the headline] what is objectionable about what Beck is saying?

my point wasn't tat nobody in the world knows how to use or store wheat-I am talking about the typical follower of Glenn Beck. Average americans do NOT own wheat grinders or make their own bread. I could just see thousands of these people buying paper sacks of flour and sticking them in their basement for no apparent reason or future usage.

The scary thing about Beck and others like him is that they actually believe what they say. As long as they remain misguided fools on TV and news networks, no problem. When they start to seek positions of power, ...be afraid...be very afraid.

Can we please stop giving him attention? The man clearly isn't Mormon and doesn't believe in God, he's just using it (as many so-called "religious" figures do) to drum up controversy and thus give him more attention.

Beck's God is $$$, and his heart is full of pure narcissism. His politics/beliefs are irrelevant, it's not the message that matters to him, but how he tells it. He's not a nutjob, he's a conman. He's a liar, leading fools down whatever path he chooses because people follow. People are idiots... not Glenn Beck. What's the Escobar quote, "the world is 200 million idiots following a million geniuses" or something?

winstonsmith...I couldn't agree more but then I'm terrified by the fact that I clicked on the headline and read this article. What the heck is wrong with us. We're reading so he's gonna keep talking.

Beck himself is a blessing from god. In his case, his purpose on this Earth is to provide comedy material for Stewart and Colbert. Only someone with a higher purpose could come up with so much stupidity so often. Sadly, this god rewards him with much loot, probably more that colbert and stewart. Of course, god has always been big on irony.
