Family credits Virgin Mary statue for saving their house from wildfire

(CNN)– Wildfires are raging in Texas.  At the Garcia's home in Montgomery County, Texas the fire line comes right up to a statue of the Virgin Mary.  The family tells CNN affiliate KTRK they believe the statue helped saved their home.

See this is the SHYTE that makes my skin crawl... IF the "virgin Mary" saved their home, why? Why not save ALL the home?

Was this particular family more religious than any other, or just LUCKIER?

@Urbanyte1, Sorry, that doesn't cut it! You can live like a Christian, but that doesn't make you one. Sort'like, just because you may live in a garage doesn't make you a car.

Congrats, you believe in the invisible man in the sky, or a sun god, or a coconut or something.

      September 9, 2011 at 5:21 pm |
    • Martin T

I hear it's the fumes from living in a garage that causes that.

Coconuts are not a matter of faith. They can be proven to exist. Faith and religious belief can only exist if there is utterly no evidence whatsoever to support the existence of the deity in which you believe.

Thank you Mr. Martin. I couldn't figure out where that was coming from.

K I was referring to people that believed coconuts were gods, but okay I didn't spell that out.

The statue did stop the wildfire, wow. Now, those religions nuts gave credit to the statue for stopping the wildfire. What about the people who made the statue in China? Will they get a credit? They deserved it because they created something so powerful that could stop the wildfire. Hat off to China!

YES! It was the power of the spaghetti box in their home not the stupid statue idiots!

Boiled for you! Keep spaghetti close by and your home will be saved too! Spread it around your neighborhood so save them all! Ship Spaghetti to Texas!

Just because one family believes something doesn't mean they speak for every Christian in the world. Some of you people need to be put on meds or start seeing a shrink because you have some major issues.

That 2ft statue looks like it would be reaally hard to place where the fire stopped. I mean, nobody wants their 15 minutes of fame anymore, do they? I usually keep my religious figurines between two tree trunks for all to see.

Didn't god create the fire? So a statue of virgin Mary stopped the fire. Does that mean it is more powerful than god?

The devil created the fire. You know..devil, Hell, fire, lots of fire??? Mary stopped it. God Bless Mary Mother of God and God Bless that family.

    @laughing

My point exactly! You cant prove that there isnt a God, but you put down anyone who believes that there is, like they need to be committed or something. These people happen to believe that there is a God, and he is "showed up" at thier house for some reason even though they cant prove it. Why should some one who cant prove thier position verbally bash someone who also cant prove thier position. It is a circle jerk of the worst sort.

All right genius let me explain it to you. Withholding belief in something that's not there is different than believing in something that's not there. Can you get your brain around that?

      September 9, 2011 at 5:18 pm |

Of course, you can prove that your right, right? Can you get your brain around that?

There was no heaven before you were born so there's no heaven after you die. The proof is right there and it always has been. Are you saying you remember the pearly gates prior to being in the womb?

      @USmellLikePee

You dont remember being in the womb, do you? I'm pretty sure you were. If you cant remember something that did happen at one point in time, how are you going to remember what happened before that? Great proof....

I just dont understand the hatred fro those who have faith. Why is it that anyone that is religious an idiot, regardless of the degree or profession they work in. Those who do not believe in a higher being, feel that they are usually judged but yet feel free to judge others? I just dont understand the hatred of other people without knowing them and their characters.

    • Observer

The only somewhat subtle message from many Christians is that you either do as they say or else you deserve to spend eternity burning.

Now tell us about hatred again.

      September 9, 2011 at 5:00 pm |
    • f

@Observer. no, not really. No Christian faith or individuals want to condemn non-believers to Hell (or Purgatory). We just want you to open your heart, your mind, your eyes and listen for God to speak to you. Not necessarily "voice" speak, but communicating wth you to believe in God and look forward to your Heavenly reward after you die. You do know that one day you will die, right? Stuck in a box with dirt on your face and worms in your eyes would really suck for all eternity.

    • Snoozie

Well, I certainly don't hate those who believe in God, and I believe also (on most days). But, I do have a hard time with folks that think coincidental foldings of a tree trunk, or burn mark patterns on a piece of toast that happen to resemble Jesus are "signs" from God. For every coincidence such as a fire stopping at a statue of Mary there have to be hundreds of instances where a fire didn't stop and a church or artifact was destroyed. To believe is one thing, but to believe so deeply that it alters your sense of reality doesn't seem healthy to me and can lead to things like complacence when action is needed (such as needing to address climate change instead of just thinking it's God's plan and will sort itself out), and that can affect all of us.

"No Christian faith or individuals want to condemn non-believers to Hell"

No one wants to do something bad to someone as long as everyone does exactly like they are told. Works for tyrants, too.

    • Joeyvglb

Well I am christen and I am not condemning anyone to hell. I believe that two people who love each other should be allowed a civil union. I believe its your right to choose to or to not follow any religion you want, daughter is a pagan. But everyone I know that artiest always feel that I am idiot for having my faith, how this little rule. Treat others the way you would want to be treated.?

      September 9, 2011 at 5:31 pm |
    • Observer

"I believe that two people who love each other should be allowed a civil union."

"how this little rule. Treat others the way you would want to be treated.?"

Logic problem. Marriage and civil union aren't the same.

      September 9, 2011 at 5:36 pm |
    • Joeyvglb

Exactly I believe a church/religion has a right to govern their practices, so instead of applying for a Marriage license I feel that people should apply for a civil union license. If those choosing to be married through their church of their choice, let them. However let civil unions be the way they are legally recognized.

Want to know why Mary claimed to be a virgin?

"If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girl’s virginity can be found, she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house." Deuteronomy 20-21

    • Snoozie

But, how do you know? Yes, in our 21st century experience, that is "stupid", but back then, was it any more stupid than other parts of the bible that are still taken as given these days? I mean, why is physical punishment of a non-virgin stupid, yet someone might say stoning of a gay person, which is also in the bible, is good and right? I think it is these things that make the bible seem like just a bunch of words to some people. In other words, how do you choose the parts to believe and the parts to dismiss?

      September 9, 2011 at 5:21 pm |
    • Babble BuyBull

I can help you answer that, Snoozie. The parts to dismiss beging at the front cover and end at the back cover.

The parts to believe? When you say to yourself "I believe I would rather go bicycling than waste my time with this obvious nonsense" is the correct form of belief.

So sad, really... simple-minded people will believe Mary and her hippy son have magical powers and picks them, above all others, to spare from heartache and loss. Notice they didn't bother to show (if he even said it) that guy thanking the firefighters... it simply MUST have been the hijab-clad statue that doused those flames. Honestly, I don't mind that folks want to give their conscious minds over to an ancient religious fable, but they REALLY BELIEVE IT, and that results in an infantile mentality about the rest of our world.

No, what is sad is people like you who don't believe in reigion yet you come to the religion page to insult religous people. 14. Reason & Logic

This comment is not meant as a joke. The fire probably stopped right at the statue because of the animals that stopped by the statue over the years to urinate rendering the surrounding brush non-combustible since urine in it's original state is non-combustible.

Cool! Think of how much muney we can save by selling off all the fire truckers, laying off all the firefighters, and just spreading around a bunch of cheap statues. Forget the border fence; just line up the statues!

I'm glad their home was saved, but stories like this really do make it seem like the others who perished weren't faithful enough. I don't believe for 1 second that the statue "saved" saved them from the fire, pure coincidence. I would like to see what the families of those that lost their lives have to say about their family members not being religious enough to be saved.

Thousands of houses burned in Texas. Where was Jesus for them? Did the Garica's imaginary friend hate those other people and burn their houses? Why didn't Jesus just make it rain?

It's more the fact that believing Jesus saved your home above all others is so incredibly smug and holier-than-thou in a completely literal sense. To think you're better than all your neighbors because a fire stopped at your virgin statue is kind of jerkish.
