Family credits Virgin Mary statue for saving their house from wildfire

(CNN)– Wildfires are raging in Texas.  At the Garcia's home in Montgomery County, Texas the fire line comes right up to a statue of the Virgin Mary.  The family tells CNN affiliate KTRK they believe the statue helped saved their home.

I saw another instance where the fire stopped at the fence. I've been genuflecting at every fence I see ever since.

What about where it just stopped at grass? It was patchy all over the place where it didn't burn.

Simply put, virgin Mary is a fireman. Firemen put out fires. Glad she's employed.

I read these posts and I'm torn: Should I laugh or cry? For crying out loud, live and let live! It's a very simple motto that well deserves practicing each day. Personally, I wouldn't put my faith on a statue. But others do, and I respect their...naiveté.

Hmmm who's to say the statue was not placed after the fire stopped?

I know, look how clean the brick base looks. I guess he could of just put it there before evacuating though thinking it would help.

No one forces you to believe. You have the right not to. But don't belittle those of us who have faith.

      @Be Real

Fairy tales, Huh? Funny how you atheists swear that what you believe in is the the right thing while everyone who differs with you is off thier rocker. You have no proof that your point of view is any more valid than anyone else's. I say that the odds of the world coming about through your methodology would take much more faith to believe in than that of a christian.

Pretty easy to claim you are a virgin when nobody can really inspect or otherwise learn more to prove wrong. Dumb hubby was simply conned by a tramp who didn't want him to know she slept with half the village....made up the whole story...or got drunk, drugged, or otherwise knocked out and taken advantage of and didn't remember who she was with...when, or where.

I'm truly amazed at the number of people out there who have no faith whatsoever. The Blessed Mother has answered many of my prayers – from finding my lost dog as a child to helping me back to sleep when I awoke a jittery mess the night before my wedding. Those who believe and have faith are rewarded and those who do not are left exactly as I'm reading now...bitter, angry and lost. All of you need Her prayers.

What a load this is. Just luck, that's all. And for saying us faithless are angry and lost or whatever, you could NOT be more wrong. I don't need a god to help me be happy. I have my wife and child to do that, a decent job, hobbies, a SOLID education that allows me to see past mythos and fairytales. That said, I think I at my slice of pizza that was resembling the virgin mary...am I going to he11 now? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

I dunno. What was his idol made of? Something fire retardant cuz I used mine to put out a grease fire and my whole house went up in flames. Luckily the firemen were wearing their Zulu god t shirts cuz the fire didn't advance once they showed up.

    September 9, 2011 at 3:50 pm |

The news is not that the statue somehow magically stopped the fire, but that the property owners believe it did.

The Virgin Mary statue is powerless. However, the strongly held belief of the residents imputing power to the statute to protect their house can be effective. It's the same thing with voodoo and witchcraft, the same principle, the same belief. This is a mental universe and consciousness is determinative.

Stubby ... I really like how you effectively compared christian beliefs with voodoo and witchcraft. Although it will be dismissed without even the consideration it deserves. Nicely done.

What's really funny is that back when the Greeks were translating the bible from Hebrew, "young woman" became "virgin" and it has stuck ever since. How can you read the works of barbarians from Bronze Age Palestine and hold them dear to your heart thousands of years later as the truth. According to the Bible we should be killing anyone that works on Sunday or cuts their sideburns. Somehow these passages are left out of Sunday school. Our national IQ is low enough already.

I disagree. When you validate fantastical beliefs by just accepting them, and not confronting them with rational thinking, you empower people to logically take their beliefs to any level they desire. Think FLDS, Waco, Mormons... People are sheep unless you earnestly and honestly challenge them to really think about what they're professing to be fact. When people are left alone to stew in their own warped sense of reality delusion takes over – think radical muslims, KKK, etc. We all need to be questioned and asked to defend any belief that's not already proven as fact. By your rationale, I should be able to tell you that I met a Unicorn and he taught me how to fly into space... and you shouldn't question me on that. Really? All peolle need other people to question them. When that doesn't happen we end up with cults and radical religious zealots and Nazis and pretty much the state of the world today. So, no... I won't just accept pure drivel like a "statue saved a house from burning." It's a load of crap and anyone who believe this is fact is pretty much an idiot.

@ WOW: what an ignorant disgusting animal you are to make judgements on people's beliefs..whether you agree with them or not, you have no right to judge them....who do you think you are ? you in fact are the stupid one and it shows completely in your pathetic comments

    September 9, 2011 at 3:43 pm |
    • MikeG

cj- How can you give someone grief for judging another's beliefs. The Bible is filled with passages of doing nothing but judging others. This book has been used to torture and kill thousands upon thousands of people throughout history. Old women were tortured as witches because people thought they caused thunder storms or diseases. The torture would not end until you confessed to being a witch. And of course because of the Bible everyone knows that Jewish people drink the blood of babies in all of their rituals.

Just read the story and move on. The comment sections of the cnn belief blogs is nothing more than an Athiest circle jerk where dozens of angry slow witted athiests wait for a new non athiest story to post so they can plaster it with smug posts.
And judging by these comment boards it seems that a majority of today's athiests are unemployed since they are spending so much time pushing thier simpleton logic on others

I like that the statue did it. There must be some kind of magic happens when you pour plaster of Paris into a mold (lets face it ... a plaster of Paris arm cast does not prevent forest fires.) ... so you make into a virgin (hard for a statue not to be a virgin .. or make it into St. Patrick or Trigger or even Smokey (if you're tryin to stop forest fires) and throw some holy water for good measure .. and a little bees wax and turn around three time patting your stomach and saying "use the force Luke" three times in rapid succession .. and wah-lah you gots magic. They can do it with icons too. And there is other stuff .. incense and chants and magic words...
