My Take: Jesus would support Palestinian statehood bid

Editor's Note: Carl Medearis is an international expert in Arab-American and Muslim-Christian relations and is author of the book Speaking of Jesus: The Art of Not-Evangelism.

By Carl Medearis, Special to CNN

This week at the United Nations, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has promised to ask for recognition of a Palestinian state. If he does, the United States will veto. Why?

Largely because of something we'll call Christian Zionism, an American theological movement that preaches a Christian obligation to help Jews reclaim the biblical Promised Land.

I travel constantly, speaking about the Middle East to evangelical Christians across America and Europe. I lived in Lebanon for 12 years and churches invite me to talk about how to love their Muslim neighbors.

Often before I get invited to speak at churches and Christian conferences, I go through an awkward period of questioning, an interview that feels more like an interrogation.

Pastors and conference leaders want to size me up to make sure I’m “safe” for Christian audiences. The interrogation usually goes something like this:

“Carl, we love your books and your message. You have a lot of insight on how Christians can be more Jesus-like to our Middle Eastern neighbors. We hope you’ll talk a lot about that!”

Translation: Please, for the love of God, don’t say anything controversial about Israel or the Palestinians.

Though they are too polite to ask, what those pastors and conference leaders want to know is what is my position on Israel. For them, the modern Jewish state is a direct fulfillment of Bible prophecy, the catalyst for a series of events that will culminate in the return of Jesus.

As the Palestinians press ahead in their bid for statehood, prepare to hear from this crowd. These Christians number in the tens of millions and they go into a state of frenzy every time a politician so much as winks at the idea of Israel giving up a few settlements or withdrawing to pre-1967 borders.

They’ll tell you their concern has nothing to do with their particular interpretation of the Bible and everything to do with America and Israel’s national security interests.

Don’t believe a word of it.

When it comes to U.S. policy on Israel and the Middle East, Christian Zionism is the elephant in the room.

Christian Zionists believe that when God told Abraham 4,000 years ago, “I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you” he was making a promise that extends to the modern state of Israel. Any nation that “curses” Israel will face God’s judgment.

Not all evangelical Christians believe this, but the ones that do are the loudest voices in the media, and they lead huge organizations.

Television evangelists like Pat Robertson and John Hagee mobilize millions of Christians every year to write to their congressmen demanding that Israel be allowed to expand settlements indefinitely. They seem to oppose every peace deal that comes to the table.

There’s a reason for this. In their minds, the modern Israeli state is not only a fulfillment of biblical prophesy. In a bizarre twist that leaves most outsiders dumbfounded, Christian Zionists say the Bible predicts that Jews and Palestinians will forever be at war until Jesus returns.

They say the only person that will bring peace before the end of the age is—wait for it—the devil, in the form of the anti-Christ.

When you hear some Christian politicians say, “The land belongs to Israel”, what they’re really saying is if America blesses Israel – that is, if it gives uncritical support to the Jewish state - God will bless America. If America curses Israel, God will curse America.

When it comes to Israel and her neighbors, many Christian Zionists believe that peacemaking is the devil’s work.

They may forget that it was Jesus who said, “Blessed are the peacemakers."

One of the reasons Jesus was crucified was because of his refusal to embrace a nationalist agenda. But Christian Zionism blesses military action by the modern state of Israel, under the banner of "national security," including the demolition of Palestinian homes to pave the way for new settlements.

So how would Jesus vote this week if he had a seat at the U.N.?

Surely love, compassion, justice and peace-making would top his lists of concerns for all involved. Maybe he would give a new parable - the Parable of the Good Palestinian - offending all who would hear.

Rather than allowing obscure Old Testament promises to dictate our foreign policy, what if we stuck to the clear commands of God - love your neighbor, your enemy and the foreigner in your midst - which appear in Exodus, Leviticus and three of the four gospels.

Many Christians in America think of Jews and Christians as “us” and anything that sounds Muslim or Arab as “the other.” But the call of Jesus is to be more loving towards the “other” than towards the people we think of as “us.”

This command works both ways. When I’ve had audiences with leaders in the Hezbollah or Hamas, I tell them the same thing: That Jesus said to love your enemies. Who are your enemies? Israel.

It’s true that there are elements of Palestinian society that do not want peace, no matter the price. They need to be isolated and dealt with.

The same goes for elements of Israeli society that don’t want peace. The good news is that extremists are a minority on both sides of the conflict.

People ask me all the time what I think about Israel and end-times theology, and how the Palestinians factor into that.
Here’s my answer: If your end-times theology trumps the clear commands in Scripture to love neighbors and enemies, then its time to rethink your theology.

    Prophet of GOD Abraham s.a.w ;
History of the building of the Ka’aba. "In Mecca,Arabia"

Qur’an in Sura Baqra Verses 121 to 127 described it clearly that Allah had ordained his servant Ibrahim to build the Shrine there for worship of One God. During Kusayi’s time it was rebuilt and fortified. During the early years of Prophet Muhammad (SA) before he announced his ministry, the Ka’aba was damaged by floods and it was rebuilt again.
"When the Black stone was to be put in its place the Makkans quarrelled among themselves as to who should have the honour to place it there. They had just decided that the first comer to the quadrangle should be given the task of deciding as to who should have the honour. Muhammad (SA) came in and was assigned this task. He advised them to place the stone in a cloak and ordered the heads of each Tribe each to take an end and bring the cloak nearer the corner on the eastern side. He himself then took out the stone and placed it in its position.

The Tradition of the Aryans of Persia.—The Aryans of the Iranian branch, with whom we are here concerned, were the first to be civilized and to acknowledge one god, and consequently they have special claims on our interest. They possessed a tradition that they quitted their ancient home because the Power of Evil made it ice-bound and uninhabitable. Perhaps this may mean that they were irresistibly urged forward by a change of climate, just as aridity possibly caused the hordes of Mongolia to swarm westwards, and incidentally to blast the civilization of the countries they overran.

My skin crawls whenever the Israeli leaders demand to be recognized as a Jewish state. Also, the ethnic cleansing policies of Israel remind me of what the Nazis tried in Europe. It is a bad omen when there is any group portraying themselves as the "Master race".

Your skin crawls every time an Israeli leader demands to be recognized as a Jewish State? Really? You have a problem with Jewish people wanting a land of their own do you? Yet, I suppose your skin tingles when 'palestinians" say they want a palestinian state. Big difference here. Israel is a Jewish State, yet arab people live there, have Israeli citizenship and are given rights under that citizenship which every Israeli has. Arabs vote, have seats in the Knesset, are able to woship as they wish and live and work in Israel. You are aware that if there is a "palestinian" state, there would be no Jews allowed to live there?
Check the millions of square miles of Mulim lands surrounding this tiny little state, how many Jews are allowed to live there? Saudi Arabia? nope. Iran? nope. Syria? Negative. It is illegal in any of these countries to build a synagogue- yet a Muslim Mosque sits on the site of the Jewish Temple. When Israelis cleared out of Gaza, the synagogues were destroyed. Along with all of the green houses and growing farm businesses which the Jewish people left for the "palestinians" so they could continue to build and earn livings.
What did Israel get in return? Rockets. Every day rockets, My skin crawls when I see how many people are so ingnorant about the history and people of Palestine and expect Israel to willingly allow themselves to be annhilated so Islam can have what little bit of land that is Israel for themselves. Please do some reading and learn something.

When the Israelis cleared out of Gaza, they were simply leaving land that did not belong to them. In return for "leaving" Gaza, the Israeli government increased the number of Jews-only settlements in the West Bank. Seems to me like the Israelis love to steal other people's land. And then they complain when someone objects to it.

@Americanbornincanada mate the basis of your argument is wrong, the neighbouring states dont all have a problem with Jews, only uneducated people do. I am Swiss but lived in Lebanon for 5 years, they are rebuilding the synagogues there! the problem they have is with Zionist apatheid supproting people http://www.haaretz.com/jewish-world/beirut-synagogue-restored-to-glory-despite-tensions-with-israel-1.308626

The Israelis did not stop the occupation of Gaza. The Israeli navy prevents Palestinians from fishing in their own waters. The Israeli air force routinely zooms through the air above Gaza causing noise pollution for the native Palestinians.

First Medearis says on his website that he is for "Making Jesus Accessible". Then he says "Why evangelicals should stop evangelizing" – now he says Christian Zionists should shut up and that Jesus would support another jihadi-based, JEWISH FREE state that would not recognize Israel as a Jewish State (those statements are from the fakistinian leaders this week).

Sounds like is either a jihadi agent or has a bad case of stockholm.

Sounds like Medearis is too scared or too much of hypocrite to say MUSLIMS SHOULD STOP KILLING NON-MUSLIMS ALL OVER THE WORLD, and should also stop trying to destroy Israel.

Jesus was a Jew. Now he's part of the Christian theology. THIS MAKES HIM A TARGET FOR CONVERSION OR DEATH FROM MUSLIMS. Since I don't think Jesus was STUPID, he would NOT support carving up Israel to create Jihadistine.

I heard a rumor that before immigrating to Israel, the foreign minister of Israel was a bouncer at a brothel in Russia. I wonder if this is true. Netanyahu sure seems scared of this racist cretin.

  7. What is Truth

Jesus knew nothing of Palestine because it didn’t exist in his time. Nowhere in the bible or the Quran is Palestine ever mentioned as a people, place or culture.
Fact: “Judea” is mentioned 45 times in the NT and “Samaria” 12 times. Palestine is not mentioned at all.

Yeah and the Canaanites never existed either. Only European Jews existed in the land of Canaan and Jesus had milky white skin, blond hair and blue eyes. What a joke!

      September 25, 2011 at 10:55 am |
    • jpeditor

It's Philistines and they had no relation to the so -called "palestinians" who are simply land-thieves who descended from migrant labor from Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt and who worked as tenant farmers for the turks who stole the land from the Romans who stole it FROM THE JEWS.

"The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct 'Palestinian people' to oppose Zionism."
PLO executive committee member Zahir Muhsein, March 31, 1977

      LOOK IT UP.

    • AmericanborninCanada

Actually, the name Palestine comes from the Romans, it was a slur on the people who lived in that whole region. At the times of the Roman empire, Israel and surrounding areas were little more to the people as one of the most insignificant regions of the empire. It is true that there is no such thing as a race of "palestinians" . True palesinians were the people who lived there, which were Jews and Arabs. And remember, there was no such thing as Islam back then (Mohammud wasn't born until the mid 500s) so there is no claim for "palestine" as being an Islamic state either.

      September 25, 2011 at 5:19 pm |
    • JewsForJesus

By jpeditor's logic that makes the Jews land thieves because they stole it from the Canaanites. Incidentally, the original Jews and Christians and Moslems and Druze, etc descended from the same group of people who fought with each other and then lived in harmony through numerous cycles. Therefore the Palestinians and the Semitic Jews are the true natives of Palestine. The European Jews are converts who transplanted themselves and claim historical ties that do not exist, for them.

That's exactly what I have been trying to explain to these people...the Jews were lost in the Sinai desert for 40 years and not in East or West Europe....therefore the people of Sinai and Red sea Region are Decendents of the Children of Israel and those descended from Ishmael... While there were intruders who came from Babylon on her crush down as you will find from my provided links on the top of the page....

  8. What is Truth

Fact: Arabs did not settle in the land until the 7th century.
Fact: Britain gained control of the area after WW I after defeating the Turks. The allies allowed the British to retain and govern the country. Britain was to set up a Jewish national homeland in this area in accordance with The Balfour Declaration of 1917.
Fact: Britain betrayed the original agreement and cut 77% of the area and gave it to King Abdullah who formed what is now modern day Jordan. Britain heavily restricted the immigration of Jews to the area during this time. Under British rule, the Jews were carefully called “Palestinian Jews” because they did not want to offend the Arabs from Jordan, Egypt and Syria who hated the name “Palestinian”.
Fact: 1947, post WW II the UN votes to slice the remaining 23% of this land between the Jews and Arabs. However, Arabs refused to accept the UN’s deal and demanded all of the area known as ‘Palestine’ to establish another Arab state. Through political wrangling the Jews won half of the original 23% as their homeland.

  9. What is Truth

Fact: On 14 May 1948 the UN formally establishes the Jewish state as Israel. That day Israel was attacked by neighboring Arab states of Egypt, Trans-Jordan, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Lebanon, and Syria. Defending Israel: 18,000 Jews most of which did not have a gun. The Arab refugee problem is self-inflicted. The day after Israel became a nation on May 14th, 1948, over night the Arab nations declared war on Israel. 2 problems were created:
    1. The Arab states encouraged all Arabs living in Israel to flee their homes temporarily so their armies could come in and destroy Israel. They said to their people, “Get out so we can get in” and purge the land of Jews!" Then this created a major refugee problem for their people. Almost overnight 343,000 genuine Arab refugees were homeless but not because of the Jews. Most Arab nations refused to accept their own people into their nations. Some Arab countries demanded the return of these refugees back to Israel and others said that it would show Arab recognition of the state of Israel.
    2. Jews in Arab countries fled at the same time because of Nazi like treatment being done to them. This burst of brutality resulted in 822,000 Jews returning to Israel. For every one Arab refugee there were two Jewish refugees. While the Arabs were in Israel before 1948, they were treated with respect and honor with full rights as a citizen. But in most Arab nations Jews were tortured, beaten and heavily taxed.
Fact: 1967 the Egyptians again attack Israel which Israel wins in 6 days
Fact: 1973 1.2 million Arabs attack Israel on the Day of Atonement which Israel wins with 300,000 troops

Khaled Al-Azm, the Prime Minister of Syria in 1948 (1972 memoirs): “Since 1973 it is we who demanded the return of the refugees… while it is we who made them leave… we have rendered them dispossessed… we have accustomed them to begging… by inviting them and bringing pressure to bear upon them to leave… we have participated in lowering their moral and social levels… we have exploited them in executing crimes of murder, arson, and throwing bombs upon… men, women and children – all this in the service of political purposes.”

For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid [Ishmael], the other by a freewoman [Isaac]. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh [Ishmael]

Bible = Genesis 17:18,19 “And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shall call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him”.

Koran = 19:54 “Also mention in the Book [the story of] Ishmael: He was [strictly] true to what he promised, and he was a messenger [and] a prophet”.

Bible = Genesis 16:12 “And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him”.

The Bible called Ishmael a wild man; the Koran called him messenger and a prophet.

Sarah also received the blessing and the promise along with her husband; as it is written, “And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her [Isaac]: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her” (Genesis 17:16).

Because Sarah was old and had no children,

“Abraham said to God, Shall a child be born unto him that is a hundred years old? And shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael [the son of the slave Hagar] might live before thee! And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shall call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him” (Genesis 17:18,19)

Sarah also received the blessing and the promise along with her husband; as it is written, “And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her [Isaac]: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her” (Genesis 17:16).

These quoted lines were to prove that Ishmael was older than Isaac and therefore it was he who was to be sacrificed and was he who helped Abraham in rebuilding the worship house at Mecca...

It as well proves why so much hatred is carried by those who considers us to be of a race and a religion of Slaves who's their father Ishmael was a result of Flesh taken place between the Prophet of GOD and a Slave woman and not by GOD inspiration...!? Insisting that Ishmael came by Flesh, they have made of him as Criminally Wild man...!?

While the facts are clear that because Sarah was not able to give him a Child or Children...She Sarah has proposed to him to merry one of her maids to have his child...after that happened she has asked him to dispose of them where he had taken them to Mecca area and left them back there but all that was done as per inspirations of GOD to him...

Any way now it is obvious what would some of those Jews, Christians or Zionists think of us as Slaves and that they are the chosen people by GOD...!! Your religions and beliefs of the Bibles are based on Slavery and not as in Quran being Antislavery and Human Equality....!!? Tell me am Wrong....!

"These quoted lines were to prove that Ishmael was older than Isaac and therefore it was he who was to be sacrificed and was he who helped Abraham in rebuilding the worship house at Mecca"

This proves nothing of the kind. What was written in Biblical Scriptures is true, and came centuries before Mohammud was born. Abraham had Ishamel first, because Sarah beleiving that she was beyond childbearing age, asked her husband to lay with her slave Hagar, and the child Ishmael was born on Sarah's knees, making him in essence, her child. Once Sarah did concieve, Ishmael was given back to Hagar as her son. God did make the promise through Isaac, but He also did bless Ishmael as He said he would, by making him the father of many. Isaac, inherited the birthright of Abraham, and God. It was Isaac who was nearly sacrificed until God stayed Abraham's hand.

OK, as you like or rather wish although I think even the Bibles you were referring to were not there at the time of Abraham nor at the time of his sons,so on until maybe after the time of Moses or Jesus they were written or gathered ??
Any way if I may inquire...! We say as per the Quran that Abraham was going to securities Ishmael in Mecca... So does your Bible mention where Isaac was going to be sacrificed by Abraham..?

Abraham was told by God to go to the region of Moriah, he was offered on Mount Moriah, which is now occupied by the Dome of the Rock.
As for when the Scriptures were written, the Pentateuch, which are beleived to be written by Moses and would have been writeen around 1446-1430 BC. These scriptures pre date that of Isaiah by about 700 years, and from scrolls found of Isaiah, which were dated from before Christ, and not found until over 1000 years later, show the accuracy of the Bible. All of these pre date anything from Islam by over 1000 years.

      September 25, 2011 at 11:20 pm |
    • Muneef

Well then maybe it was another sacrifice for Isaac!! At the Dome of Rock...!

      What Is Stoning the Devil?
The stoning of the Devil ritual reenacts part of the story of Abraham and his sacrifice of his son. God told Abraham in a dream to slaughter his only son–Ishmael in Muslim belief–as a sacrifice to God. Abraham consulted Ishmael about this, and Ishamel told his father to comply immediately. On his way to sacrifice his son, the Devil appeared three times to Abraham to dissuade him from fulfilling his duty. Abraham stoned the Devil with seven stones each time he appeared to him.

My fellow Americans. We do not really like the Jews. Israel is our fantasy-land and as soon as the Messiah returns we will force the Jews to convert or die under our tanks. We want Moshiach NOW!

What about the Budhists and the Hindus? Who is to say which God is the true God?

@ Budhist- God says He is the True God. John 1- In the begining was the Word (Jesus), the Word was with God, and the Word is God. Jesus, the Son, says, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me.

There is no other name under heaven in which man is saved.

Jesus paid the penalty of sin already, overcame death – it is up to everyone to accept the price Jesus has already paid.

Jesus says, Truly I say, unless you are born again, you can not inherit the kingdom of God.

Please ask if you don't know, understand or believe- ask sincerily, Jesus- are you True, and is what your Word says True? If you ask sincerily, seek the truth, and He will show you the Truth, and the Truth shall set you free.

Why are still giving Apartheid Israel 3 billion dollars per year? We need jobs, homes and schools and roads and bridges right here in the USA. Screw Israel. Screw Israel with a big plantain.

The change will take place whether we like it or not against the will of transgressors...GOD never said the foreigners should come before the land origin owners.... I would rather follow the Gold trail if you want to stick to Silver...

Still are you wondering why the oppressed are not happy with your doings....!?
    Islamists Carve Out Place in Libya Politics;

    Coptic Intellects in Egypt Reject US Religious Freedom Report;

    Read and Watch the Changes adjust you stopwatch....;

You are responsible for the arrogance and their feeling of being some Superiority as "Supreme Beings"..."GODS on Earth...!

You know what I think the Quran mentioning the infidels and those mentioned in it to be fought and wiped out are not the religious Christians nor the Religious Jews but I think the Quran was referring to "Those within Zionism"...they always been the transgressors and oppressors....! In the end "Jesus" will be coming for them to kill with the swines....while saving the rest, the true believers from "Jews,Christians,Muslims,++"...
I see no other than that being a logical understanding..

Say (O Prophet!): The evil and the good are not equal even though the excess and abundance of the evil may impress you. So, O people of understanding, be mindful of your duty to Allah that you may succeed." Al-Qur'an, 5:100

“The two feet of the son of Adam [human being] will not move on the Day of Judgment in front of Allah until he is asked about five things: about his life, and how he spent it? And (more specifically) about his youth, what did he consume it in? And about his money, how did he earn it? And on what did he spend it? And how much did he act upon what he knew?” Hadith.
