A movement to paint Obama as the Antichrist?

By Dan Gilgoff and Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editors

(CNN) - On our sister blog The 1600 Report, CNN's Alex Mooney notes a discrepancy in the official White House transcript of a California fundraiser Monday night, during which a person who heckled President Barack Obama was escorted out by security.

Here's the White House transcript's account of the heckler:

AUDIENCE MEMBER: The Christian God is the only true living God, the Creator of the heavens and the universe.

But Mooney observes that the White House pool report records the heckler as being much more blunt, yelling "'Barack Obama is the Antichrist!"

The president interrupted his remarks at the fundraiser, held at Los Angeles' House of Blues, to respond to the heckler.

"First of all, I agree Jesus Christ is the Lord," Obama said. "I believe in that. I do have a question, though. I think the young man may have left his jacket... "

Ironically, the remark about Obama as the Antichrist came the same day that The New York Times ran an op-ed arguing that the Antichrist is assuming a bigger place in the public discourse, as evangelical Christian ideas about the end times gain traction.

In a piece titled "Why the Antichrist Matters in Politics," Washington State University history professor Matthew Avery Sutton argues that, for some Christians, Obama fits into ideas about the Antichrist, whose arrival is believed to be a portent of the end times and Jesus' second coming:

For some evangelicals, President Obama is troubling. The specious theories about his place of birth, his internationalist tendencies, his measured support for Israel and his Nobel Peace Prize fit their long-held expectations about the Antichrist. So does his commitment to expanding the reach of government in areas like health care.

The op-ed was the most e-mailed piece on nytimes.com for much of Tuesday.

In the 2008 campaign, Republican presidential nominee John McCain released an anti-Obama ad called "The One" that ridiculed Obama for what it said was his messiah complex. Some critics claimed the spot was a veiled attempt to paint Obama as the Antichrist, though the McCain camp denied it.

What do you think? Is there a gathering movement to paint the president as the Antichrist? Are such charges overblown attempt to discredit Obama's critics?

The Book of Revelation is best described by the following:

"Nineteenth-century agnostic Robert G. Ingersoll branded Revelation "the insanest of all books".[30] Thomas Jefferson omitted it along with most of the Biblical canon, from the Jefferson Bible, and wrote that at one time, he "considered it as merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherences of our own nightly dreams." [31]

Martin Luther "found it an offensive piece of work" and John Calvin "had grave doubts about its value."[32]

I see that you're an expert on the book of Revelation, among so many other theological matters.

Please tell me: What is the theme of Revelation?

Who is the beast believed to be symbolize in this book–which Roman emperor?

      What does the rainbow symbolize?

What does the number seven and six signify?

      After all, you're an expert.

How about issues of Greek translation. What are the critical issues regarding textual criticism?

Why is the Greek of Revelation so different from that of the Fourth Gospel?

And I see you're also an expert on Luther and Calvin.

Please tell me how did Calvin reconcile the issue of faith and works?

As I'm sure you're aware, the church buried Luther in his clerical robes, after they executed him. Why was this? And what did Luther believe his role was as a priest? What did he believe was the solution to the divisions that existed in the church of his day?

Obviously, Barry G needs to review the writings of Thomas Jefferson to see why after reviewing the NT he prepared his own bible leaving out Revelation and a lot of other Christian mumbo jumbo.

      To wit:

"The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth begins with an account of Jesus’s birth without references to angels, genealogy, or prophecy. Miracles, references to the Trinity and the divinity of Jesus, and Jesus' resurrection are also absent from The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth. "

Obviously you thought you were funny but in within the confines of reality – your childish humore belongs back in your classrooms. Most adults wish to at least attempt to speak with people who act someone intelligently. In the end, it isn't really about the "God issue" it is about your lack of intelligence and maturity that drives you to spout out tripe that one hears in the school cafe between little kids who are trying to "one-up" each other with mother jokes. It is a sign of a lack of an integral part of humanity within you.

I wouldn't go around performing the equivalent garbage making fun of atheists beliefs even though most of the atheists I have found throughout the colleges, blogs, Humanist Society and writers like Hitch, Dawkins and Harris have even less evidence for their positions as Xians do for theirs or Muslims do for theirs. Why do I not act like you? – because I am a grown up and take my fellow man as someone to have love and respect for.

so wheres the respect and love there jimmy jim jim? as far as i can see, i chose to speak as i wish , and i believe it was your "god" that allows me to do so, you may want to keep that in mind when insulted someone... have fun in hell. LOL that is after all where sinners go, correct?

    September 28, 2011 at 2:43 pm |
    • AtheistSteve

I agree with nearly everything you said hippy, but with regards to those atheists having less evidence for their positions not so much. Xians draw conclusions about aspects that are unknown or unknowable. Their view becomes tainted with unknowns as facts that atheists have no alternate option for. For example the Xian accepts that the universe has meaning and purpose but to atheists it just "is". For Xians it's easy to explain away all the mysteries as the workings of Gods will. Atheists have questions without answers, not answers without questions.

The anti-Christ is clearly defined in the New Testament epistle of First John: Those [former members of the Church] who left and began teaching that Jesus didn't come in fleshly (human) form. These people, whom John calls anti-Christs were also guilty of hating their brothers and sisters.

John responds by saying that how can anyone say that they know or love God, while they hate their brother or sister, how are made in God's image?

Let's not twist the Scripture to make a political point, which the New Testament or Old Testament writers were not making.

First John, like the rest of the Bible, is surprisingly non-political. It concerns itself with ethics and values and with saving people.

@Barry: “how can anyone say that they know or love God, while they hate their brother or sister,” Jesus disagrees with you

"If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple."
      –(Luke 14:26)

If biblical predictions of the antichrist are being considered it should be acceptable to look to the Bible for a description of such a person, especially if we are trying to fit our own President into the roll. The antichrist or beast as he is called in Revelation 13:3 is described as having a "seemingly" fatal head wound that was healed. It goes on to say that all the world will marvel at this deceptive miracle. Revelation 17:8 furthur describes the antichrist as a beast that was, is not, and yet is. The shoe doesn't fit-not yet anyway.

Actually, LaVonne's post is pertinent to believer and non-believer alike. She is pointing out that even by the standards of their own "revelation", Obama doesn't fit the description of the anti-christ, a point well worth noting.

I'd forgotten about that head wound thing. I guess that Arizona Congresswoman is in the running now ... 😀

The 27 Characteristics of the AntiChrist:

    1. He comes from among ten kings in the restored Roman Empire; his authority will have similarities to the ancient Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks [Daniel 7:24; Rev 13:2 / Daniel 7:7]

Obama: American president has similarities to Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks.

    2. He will subdue three kings [Daniel 7:8, 24]

Obama: Hmmm... McCain, Hillary and John Edwards

    3. He is diverse from the other kings [Daniel 7:24]

    Obama: Mixed race

    4. He will rise from obscurity…a “little horn” [Daniel 7:8]

Obama: virtually unheard of two years ago.

    5. He will speak boastfully [Daniel 7:8; Rev 13:5]

Obama: Change we can [blindly] believe in...

    6. He will blaspheme God, [Daniel 7:25; 11:36; Rev 13:5] slandering His Name, dwelling place, and departed Christians and Old Testament saints [Rev 13:6]

Obama: not exactly getting along with his pastor...

    7. He will oppress the saints and be successful for 3 ½ years [Daniel 7:25; Rev 13:7]

    Obama: One termer.

    8. He will try to change the calendar, perhaps to define a new era, related to himself [Daniel 7:25]

Obama: Michigan primary... once again change he can believe in... may be a 3 day work week.

    9. He will try to change the laws, perhaps to gain an advantage for his new kingdom and era
    [Dan 7:25]

    Obama: wants to re-negotiate NAFTA!

    10. He will not be succeeded by another earthly ruler, but by Christ [Daniel 7:26-27]

    Obama: Future stuff...

    11. He will confirm a covenant with “many” [Daniel 9:27]
This covenant will likely involve the establishment of a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem
    [see Dan 9:27; Matt 24:15]

Obama: Future stuff: ???, diplomatic deal? treaty? NAFTA? Peace treaty with bin Ladin? Who knows.

    12. He will put an end to Jewish sacrifice and offerings after 3 ½ years and will set up an abomination to God in the Temple [Daniel 9:27, Matthew 24:15]

Obama: I've never heard of him sacrificing an animal, or follow ANY of the sacrifice rites from the book of Leviticus.

    13. He will not answer to a higher earthly authority; “He will do as he pleases”[Daniel 11:36]

Obama: U.S. presidents are like that....

    14. He will show no regard for the religion of his ancestors [Daniel 11:37]

Obama: His Father was a Muslim...

    15. He will not believe in any god at all [except for himself] [Daniel 11:37]
Obama: His Mother is an atheist. He was raised atheist. And his adopted church believes in stuff that's kind of politically incorrect. Does he really believe in god?

    16. He will have "no regard for the desire of women"[Dan 11:37]

Obama: He doesn't much care for Hillary. Bill embodies the the "desire of women"...

    17. He will claim to be greater than any god [Daniel 11:37; 2 Thess 2:4]

Obama: Obviously someone who disobeys the bible thinks they are greater than God.

    18. He will claim to be God [2 Thessalonians 2:4]

Obama: Satanists claim to be gods, and as a democrat, he is a satanist.

    19. He will only honor a “god” of the military. His whole focus and attention will be on his military. He will conquer lands and distribute them [Daniel 11:39-44]

Obama: Has an expert "campaign" – the electoral equivalent of an army.

    20. His arrival on the world scene will be accompanied by miracles, signs and wonders [2 Thess 2:9]

Obama: Signs/Disasters like Chinese earth quake, the cyclone that his burma. Wonders like a black man and a woman are to front runners for US president...

    21. Either he, or his companion [The False Prophet], will claim to be Christ [Matt 24:21-28]

Obama: We'll have to wait for his choice on a running mate.

    22. He will claim that Jesus did not come in the flesh, or that Jesus did not rise bodily from the grave [2 John 7]. He will deny that Jesus is the Messiah [I John 2:22]

    Obama: Is a democrat.

    23. He will be worshipped by many people [Rev. 13:8]

Obama: I would have to say this is true...

    24. He will hate a nation that initially will have some control over his kingdom, but he will destroy this nation [Rev 17:16-18]

    Obama: Israel?

    25. He will appear to survive a fatal injury [Rev. 13:3; 17:8]

Obama: Everyone thought his campaign was "dead" before Iowa.

    26. His name will be related to the number six hundred and sixty six [Rev 13:17-18].

Was born in Chicago zip code: 60606

    27. He will be empowered by the devil himself [Rev. 13:2]

    Nominated by democratic party.

      >1. He comes from among ten kings in the restored Roman Empire; his authority will have similarities
      >to the ancient Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks [Daniel 7:24; Rev 13:2 / Daniel 7:7]

      >Obama: American president has similarities to Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks.

What is most noteworthy is that this book of prophecy failed to prophesy the fail of monarchies and the rise of other forms of government.

      >2. He will subdue three kings [Daniel 7:8, 24]

      >Obama: Hmmm... McCain, Hillary and John Edwards

Um, I count zero kings in that list. If people who ran against him are all called kings (whatever happened to biblical literalism?), he defeated more than three "kings".

      >3. He is diverse from the other kings [Daniel 7:24]

      >Obama: Mixed race

Everybody has SOME point of difference! This is fatuous. It will apply to absolutely everyone on the planet.

      >4. He will rise from obscurity…a “little horn” [Daniel 7:8]

      >Obama: virtually unheard of two years ago.

He was president of the US two years ago, genius. But he did rise from obscurity, as has multi-tudes of politicians in this and other countries.

      >5. He will speak boastfully [Daniel 7:8; Rev 13:5]

      >Obama: Change we can [blindly] believe in...

There's a political leader who doesn't do this?

      One term = 4 years

      >Obama: Michigan primary... once again change he can believe in... may be a 3 day work week.

What? Michigan primary? Changing the date of an event isn't changing the calendar! And dream on about a 3 day work week.

      >9. He will try to change the laws, perhaps to gain an advantage for his new kingdom and era [Dan 7:25]

      >Obama: wants to re-negotiate NAFTA!

Oh yeah, renegotiating NAFTA is something first century Christians were in s stew over!

      >10. He will not be succeeded by another earthly ruler, but by Christ [Daniel 7:26-27]

      >Obama: Future stuff...

So once he's succeeded by someone in 2013 or 2017, you'll happily admit what an empty gourd your head is, right?

      >11. He will confirm a covenant with “many” [Daniel 9:27] This covenant will likely involve the establishment of a

      >13. He will not answer to a higher earthly authority; “He will do as he pleases”[Daniel 11:36]

      >Obama: U.S. presidents are like that....

Right, which is why thew Republicans have been able tie the gov't in knots so easily while holding only the House.

      >14. He will show no regard for the religion of his ancestors [Daniel 11:37]

      >Obama: His Father was a Muslim...

Oh, so he isn't a secret Muslim after all?

      >17. He will claim to be greater than any god [Daniel 11:37; 2 Thess 2:4]

      >Obama: Obviously someone who disobeys the bible thinks they are greater than God.

So Obama plus all other Christians plus all non-Christians are in running on this one ...

      >18. He will claim to be God [2 Thessalonians 2:4]

      >Obama: Satanists claim to be gods, and as a democrat, he is a satanist.

He IS indeed a democrat ... um ...

      >19. He will only honor a “god” of the military. His whole focus and attention will be on his military. He will
      >conquer lands and distribute them [Daniel 11:39-44]

      >Obama: Has an expert "campaign" – the electoral equivalent of an army.

Oh, so I guess the next bit of scriptural twisting will be that Armageddon is the 2012 presidential race?

      >20. His arrival on the world scene will be accompanied by miracles, signs and wonders [2 Thess 2:9]

      >Obama: Signs/Disasters like Chinese earth quake, the cyclone that his burma. Wonders like a black man and

      >21. Either he, or his companion [The False Prophet], will claim to be Christ [Matt 24:21-28]

      >Obama: We'll have to wait for his choice on a running mate.

Well, now, given his record for making up his own biography, I COULD see Joe Biden claiming to be Christ! OK, you got ONE right, maybe ...

      >22. He will claim that Jesus did not come in the flesh, or that Jesus did not rise bodily from the grave [2 John 7]. He

      >23. He will be worshipped by many people [Rev. 13:8]

      >Obama: I would have to say this is true...

I think the clock ran out on this one. 😀

      >24. He will hate a nation that initially will have some control over his kingdom, but he will destroy this
      >nation [Rev 17:16-18]

      >Obama: Israel?

I think it'll be the tiny Republic of Togo ....

      >25. He will appear to survive a fatal injury [Rev. 13:3; 17:8]

      >Obama: Everyone thought his campaign was "dead" before Iowa.

Oh wow. The bible is the word of god, but god speaks in such random metaphors that anything can mean anything. Yeah, this is for sure the path to truth ...

      >26. His name will be related to the number six hundred and sixty six [Rev 13:17-18].

      >Was born in Chicago zip code: 60606

That looks more like sixty thousand six hundred and six to me! But even if you make allowances, how can any Christian think their main book of prophecy would stoop to prophesying US zip codes?

      >27. He will be empowered by the devil himself [Rev. 13:2]

i have seen this repeated numerous times on this board by the believers and ironically, it's the only thing we non-believers
seem to be able to agree with you on. there really is no hope for dialogue with fundamentalists of any stripe and i don't know why we even bother trying. it's simply a long long war of attrition and we should just accept that and get on with it.

He (the antichrist) will prosper in everything that he does – Daniel 8:24

This would recquire Christians to believe he is doing a good job as President.

    September 28, 2011 at 2:27 pm |
    • Barry G.

No, Daniel does not write about the anti-Christ. Daniel's concern was that of idolatry, which was the ongoing problem in the Old Testament.

      Do your homework.

The term “anti-Christ” is found the New Testament epistle known as First John and refers to a group of former Christians, who left the church and began teaching that Jesus did not actually come in the flesh. (They seem to have held that Jesus’ body was spiritual, not fleshly and not entirely human.)

John refers to the individuals who, were saying that Jesus didn’t come in the flesh, as anti-Christs.

Apparently these individuals (whom John calls the anti-Christs) were also hating their brothers and sisters.

John condemned such behavior and said: How can anyone love God, who does not love their brother or sister, who, incidentally, are made in the image of God?

John and his community of faith were not only Christians, but they were also Jews; and, the Jews knew that the Ten Commandments forbid anyone from bearing false witness.

John’s point: Jesus did take on the form of a human being, just like the rest of us, and he died as a sacrifice on the cross, experiencing all of the pain and suffering any human would experience.

John’s point was, therefore, love one another.

i think that it is interesting that you can talk so much about a person that you do not like. Even find the time to do research. that would tell me that this person is very powerful and concerns you. That is the sign of a true leader! If the Repulicans and teabaggers would do their jobs, we might all be amazed at what he could accomplish....

  14. Richard S Kaiser

GOD is no respecter of "persons" and His Sons, the Gods are ruled over by GOD's first born Son who did eventually become a human being we know and relate to as being Christ Jesus. GOD is ever stretching HIS Celestial Embodiment outwardly upon the Sea of Nothingness which we call Outer Space or outrightly, GOD's Holy Spirit.

GOD is in everness laying down the Firmament for the creation of a "New Earth" made from the Celestial Universes which float amid HIS Holy Spirit, this Ocean of Nothingness. GOD needs as yet, no Beings of Celestialized Humaneness such as our likes, yet His first born Son who eventually ended up becoming our Life's Savior who has found us to be worthy of saving despite our faultiness sins.

The Lord Christ Jesus took it upon Himself to stand in the FATHER's Ways and die for the redemption of mankind. He, Christ Jesus died upon the Cross of Calvary for the redemption of all life here upon this lonely yet fertile place we call Earth(Gaia) She, Gaia, has lain openly the firmament of her being to be the heavens of her Heavenliness for our sake's kind when we are found deadened to this world.

Gaia takes it upon her embodied firmaments' being, the inner places of safe harborage for all the souls and spirits of the lost and to be found safe passages into her heavens due the Lord Christ Jesus’ patronage way. Our Bodies are but buildings and some of these building-like bodies are temples yet in otherly terms our bodies are the Kingdoms of the Gods.

Mat 6:33 "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

1Cr 3:9 “For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, [ye are] God's building.”

1Cr 3:16 "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?"

Luk 17:21 "Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is inside/within you."

Within or inside us, within each of our bodies, lays the very foundations of the Kingdoms of the Gods, who are GOD's Sons. They, the Sons of GOD have framed up all of Life upon this celestial plain of Gaia's Heavenly Abodes. In our body's inward depths does lay the works of cellular sized universes, the children of the Sub-celestial universes made manifest and are alive and living with the Gods, their family members and servants and subjects. We are their living cosmos, buildings and temples and kingdoms.

These words above are alien to hapless Christians and many who are devoid of godliness natures. I have been attempting to write my “Faith's Truths in Words”, that can be thoughtfully considered with a subtleness of subjective clarities. I am but one soul-filled person of many amid this Celestial Heaven’s Plain upon Gaia, the Earth, where abides innumerable personalized, soul-filled buildings and temples of people and wherein them does lay the Kingdoms of many Gods too numerable to count.

How does this Ocean of Nothingness which is GOD’s Holy Spirit relate to the inner chasms of Inner Space?

The Oean of Nothingness is a Celestial Ocean whereupon and on, does float each and every Universe of Grand Celestial Design. The Nothingness rivers and streams and creeks flows from the Ocean of Celestial Nothingness, deeply into the depths of inward space places wherein does lay atom-sized nodulations that clump together to form either the fractal heavens or in Life they do form cellular sized universes.

So you see, without the Oean of Nothingness and its’ many rivers and streams and creeks, all mannerisms of material-based things would be but a giant mass of wastefulness. This Holy Spirit of Celestialness or its’ ever flowing and ebbing Ocean of Nothingness gives to all things material, its’ spiritual ebbing’s waters in rivers and streams and creeks of Nothingness. The Holy Spirit of Nothingness does ever flow deeply into all recesses from the biggest of material things toward material things of the most finite or most smallest or littlest of things‘ materially manifested.

As manhood and womanhood and childhood, we are all connected by streams of Nothingness. All things materially thought upon and pondered about, do have their own rivers and streams and creeks of Holy Spirited Nothingness. From the biggest Celestial Object to the smallest, all are interwoven with the Spiritual Waters of Nothingness.

Thank You kindly, oh Holy Spirit of Celestial Oceanic Nothingness for inspiring my body’s soul of streaming nothingness to conspire within my material being, affording me the ways and means toward this writing of my Faith-Filled embodied continence. GOD and HIS Sons are real and truly do exist.

Thank You oh GOD who is the culminations of all Celestial Based Universes found within the Cosmos' Ocean of Nothingness and thanks for allowing your Holy Spirit of the Celestial Ocean of Nothingness to guide me in my writings. May my Wordage of thoughts fall with lengthened brevity upon the eyes of those willingly wanting to know the resonating somberness of GOD and HIS Holiness Ways.

You do realize, Richard, that if you spouted your theological musing back in the good old days when the church ruled the western world, you would probably have been burnt at the stake as a heretic? You owe a LOT to the secularists you disparage who tamed the church and created the modern western democracies whose freedoms we all tend to take for granted.

Oy...why do we go down this road? The opposition is NOT the worse possible thing we can come up with. Obama isn't the anti-christ, Bush isn't like Hitler, conservatives are not stupid and liberals are not pansies. Old elementary thinking that grown adults can't seem to shake.

  19. Bibletruth

    OBama, the antichrist...too funny.

The Bible gives at least 12 distinctive features re Anti Christ . Not two of these features fit anything or anyone, including President OBama, that 99.9999% of people say or think. But to what it applies, all twelve features fit to a T. And if folks would actually study the bible, they would know and see. Just in case your wondering, the evangelicals are as clueless as anyone else, for at least 3 reasons: their discomfort with the ten commandments and their once saved always saved theology and their second chance/rapture end time scenario.

  20. peace be upon us all (really only me)

jesus is not a man but a creation of men, his father was a man not a "god". to argue this is to argue imaginary creatures walked the earth like they believed they did during the time of the J man! to argue that imaginary creatures are silly and not true is to see that a dragon coming up from the depths of the earth is also silly. once you can see this, you now can live a life without holds on your judgements... go and be fruitful...a.k.a. – make cotton underwear and name it fruit of the loom.
