A movement to paint Obama as the Antichrist?

By Dan Gilgoff and Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editors

(CNN) - On our sister blog The 1600 Report, CNN's Alex Mooney notes a discrepancy in the official White House transcript of a California fundraiser Monday night, during which a person who heckled President Barack Obama was escorted out by security.

Here's the White House transcript's account of the heckler:

AUDIENCE MEMBER: The Christian God is the only true living God, the Creator of the heavens and the universe.

But Mooney observes that the White House pool report records the heckler as being much more blunt, yelling "'Barack Obama is the Antichrist!"

The president interrupted his remarks at the fundraiser, held at Los Angeles' House of Blues, to respond to the heckler.

"First of all, I agree Jesus Christ is the Lord," Obama said. "I believe in that. I do have a question, though. I think the young man may have left his jacket... "

Ironically, the remark about Obama as the Antichrist came the same day that The New York Times ran an op-ed arguing that the Antichrist is assuming a bigger place in the public discourse, as evangelical Christian ideas about the end times gain traction.

In a piece titled "Why the Antichrist Matters in Politics," Washington State University history professor Matthew Avery Sutton argues that, for some Christians, Obama fits into ideas about the Antichrist, whose arrival is believed to be a portent of the end times and Jesus' second coming:

For some evangelicals, President Obama is troubling. The specious theories about his place of birth, his internationalist tendencies, his measured support for Israel and his Nobel Peace Prize fit their long-held expectations about the Antichrist. So does his commitment to expanding the reach of government in areas like health care.

The op-ed was the most e-mailed piece on nytimes.com for much of Tuesday.

In the 2008 campaign, Republican presidential nominee John McCain released an anti-Obama ad called "The One" that ridiculed Obama for what it said was his messiah complex. Some critics claimed the spot was a veiled attempt to paint Obama as the Antichrist, though the McCain camp denied it.

What do you think? Is there a gathering movement to paint the president as the Antichrist? Are such charges overblown attempt to discredit Obama's critics?

    And yet again:

The Book of Revelation is best described by the following:

"Nineteenth-century agnostic Robert G. Ingersoll branded Revelation "the insanest of all books".[30] Thomas Jefferson omitted it along with most of the Biblical canon, from the Jefferson Bible, and wrote that at one time, he "considered it as merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherences of our own nightly dreams." [31]

Martin Luther "found it an offensive piece of work" and John Calvin "had grave doubts about its value."[32]

Again I say, how fortunate we are to have someone with your expertise and knowledge of the book of Revelation.

Please tell us how the seven seals function in the book?

How does Nero or Domitian figure into this book? Or was it another emperor?

Which wave of persecution is John addressing?

What is the structure of the book? To what extent is the book influenced by Hebrew thought and to what extent by Greek thought and rhetoric?

I am delighted to have an expert like you, who speaks with such confidence and conviction about this book.

And dating, I must ask you about dating. Given the quality of the Greek and the historical allusions, what date would you give to this book?

I’m so disappointed. You failed to respond to my questions about Martin Luther and John Calvin.

Surely one with your knowledge can answer the questions I posed.

Please tell us, how did Calvin reconcile the issues of grace and works?

      At least tell us that!

After all, you write as if you are an expert.

Put your money where your mouth is and answer, or admit you are and have been writing about matters of which you do not understand and be silent!

hello my children, i have come for only some of you. i love you all, but only some get to come up stairs with me and meet my old man.

    HIPPYPOET,
what kind of all knowing, all powerful, almight god only has room for "some"
what kind of all knowing, all powerful, almight god makes someone almost kill there kid to test faith. you would think that the dude knows the outcome and has no need to test. but than again, that means "god" is real, which by simply 5 yr old logic we can prove he is not.

here goes, the old testiment god destroyed alot of stuff, the new testiment god has only created... 2 different dudes, ones the sword while the others the hugs. thats a polytheistist! think about it.. and lets argue they are the same dude, then if i was to say oh for instance... god is g@y, jesus was a h0mo, mary was the town chariot, jesus was in a "relationship" with pilate and thats true story behind the nailing... still waiting on my smiting oh lord of lords, oh god of gods – that implies that there ARE other gods. same as the saming that this god is the only true god, again implies that the "others" are just not as cool, strong, powerful, controling, or just an imagine campain. again think about it.

Does not the claymaker destroy a vessel that is cracked and beyond repair?
Does not an iron worker melt down a broken sword to make anew?
Does not the tiller of soil ever retill its' firmament to throw new seed in it?
Does not a woodworker who finds a broken drawer replace it if the cabinet is still good?

Does not GOD give to HIS Sons all they need and want?
Did not GOD's Sons build all of our Life's creations made manifested of their Kingdom needs to reside within?
Are we not but buildings and temples wherein the Sons of GOD do reside?
Are we not a dispensible building or temple to be discarded after its' use has been fulfilled?

1Cr 3:9 “For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, [ye are] God's building.”

1Cr 3:16 "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?"

Did not the very first Son of GOD eventually thru Time, become Christ Jesus?

You know the whole story of Christ Jesus and if you cae to be a humility or bigoted fool or a blasphemer just to be a part of fashionability's sakedness, then so be it.

No, he doesn’t which is why children are dying every minute on this planet from starvation by the thousands.

“Are we not but buildings and temples wherein the Sons of GOD do reside?”

No because your god doesn’t exist and we don’t have a soul.

      @Richard

Nowhere did you come and crap onto my posts. The fact is I enjoy crapping on the religious sermons of yours. If you were to take a serious look at my own posts I dispense advice and presumptions on what you have supplied about your life. You have troubles in life. I make comments to help you see the truth of where your passion came from.

Fear mostly. Which speaks really badly your choice of where to turn. Your 'literature' is a rehash – praise the lord. You won't admit it? Then explain where your position is justified to repost your literature – you want to convert obviously. In doing the antagonizing am I not asserting the opposing force in forcing your hand to not being a zealot? Would you rather I let you rant freely and convert the world? You would have everyone and when that happens who else is there for you to convert?

So the end is that you would still be alone. No matter how much you convert you'll never be justified to sway the real heart with fear. For your religion is a favorite to your view – you are not convincing anyone that your religion is the truth. Not by a long shot.

Psa 90:4 For a thousand years in thy sight [are but] as yesterday when it is past, and [as] a watch in the night.
2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day [is] with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

For in the realm of GOD only a few days are gone HIS Time yet in our Time thousands of years have past. Likewise within and/or inside cellular Life Universes a thousand years has gone their way but only a day our time has passed.

The problem with Richard is that he is in too much sin. You can ask him once again how much sin he has – he'll tell you.

He is at the point in his life where he really needs god to assure himself that he has a secure place in heaven waiting for him. He begs god for that assurance. He's here on these blogs working for the browny points that he needs to buy his ticket. I love how pitiful Richard is portraying himself, his lot in life and in general.

I think he's really down since the economy has tanked. He's probably in financial turmoil and the only way out is to turn to god. That's my best presumption. Care to enlighten us Richard on how really pitiful you are?

      Hey Richard

You know it's okay to admit failure, even as a man, we're all human. Your religious folks love to harness guilt and love to suffer within (this is the wrong thinking of course). As a human being when you move away from these guilt trip imposed by religion you will realize on your own that you are strong on your own. You can learn to appreciate life. You can be honest to yourself and accept the fact that "IT IS OKAY TO BE HAPPY JUST BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BE." This is the truth and you do not need a shell of guilt to surround yourself before you can be happy. That is what is wrong with you fundamentalists.

You guys deserve to be happy and should just move away from needing guilt first and just accept happiness on your own.

You have to believe that delusional crap so you can feel good about yourself, otherwise you would have to face the reality of who you truly are and that scares you. It's only when someone doesn't love themselves they have to believe a deity does, it's pathetic. There is no god living inside of you it's all made up in your corrupt mind.

all religious people should not be allowed to both vote and run for office as they can not separate fact from myth and thats bad for the leader of a country... can you imagine going to war over the tooth fairy, or about the easter bunny, ah better yet santa clause..not good at all! they pray before a battle which has no impact on who wins, but if we didn't pray we could get our men out faster and therefore maybe win more as they might still be praying... silly prayers!

Most of us don't dream straw men.

Your comment betrays your ignorance of American history (particularly pre and Colonial History). Your comment also betrays an ignorance of Scripture and how literature in general functions.

I have been taught, however, to be tolerant of others, especially those who have not had the same opportunites and abilities as others.

By the way, having no faith is not a reason to be proud or to boast. It is reason to feel shame.

If you want to take pride in something, take pride in your humility, kindness, compassion, and your ability to forgive and love others.

you may not dream of straw but i hope for blood and flesh every sunday... i was being less vulgar...but if you wish to go head long into the fra, lets go! you believe 4 dudes on horse back will ride into town and kill everything but good christians, but by me saying that its the same to say war over religion is like war over santa clause is bad.. i think i missed your point.

      @Barry G.

i should feel shame for being a smart person who sees the truth in the bs that you call faith... i am lost on that one! see i feel that its you who should feel shame for believing in something that you can't prove the existance of, also i if were you would feel very silly.

Umm..no, I don't think that at all. But that you for playing the guessing game. Pity you stink at it.

My comment was directed toward, "all religious people should not be allowed to both vote and run for office". This was a stupid and dangerous comment to make. I will stand by that comment on what you wrote.

I agree with hippypoet. Religious people should not be allowed to vote, possess weapons of any sort, or operate dangerous or heavy machinery.
You don't support Charles Manson being able to vote, do you Uncouth Swain? You are no different from Manson in terms of mental health. We don't allow crazy people to be in public either, as this is not only dangerous, but disturbing to sane people.
Abnormal psychology is where it's at. We do not compromise with Manson and give him freedom of religion do we?
HA HA HA HA! You are sooooo stupid! LOL

"I agree with hippypoet. Religious people should not be allowed to vote, possess weapons of any sort, or operate dangerous or heavy machinery."

~Of course you agree...you are a sheep. But sadly you repeat a dangerous and stupid mentality.

"You don't support Charles Manson being able to vote, do you Uncouth Swain?"

~Of course I don't. I don't support anyone who has co_mmitted a felony such a murder to ever be able to vote again. You do realize that Manson is not allowed to vote for his crimes and not for his thoughts..correct? Duh.

"You are no different from Manson in terms of mental health. We don't allow crazy people to be in public either, as this is not only dangerous, but disturbing to sane people."

~Only fools and psychiatrists claim to know what goes on in the minds of other ppl. Sadly...I doubt you have a degree.

"We do not compromise with Manson and give him freedom of religion do we?
HA HA HA HA! You are sooooo stupid! LOL"

~What we do not compromise on is when one person's rights takes away from another person's rights. I don't hate to say it..but you are pretty stupid on what is legal in our nation. Again, go and do a little basic research on why Manson is in prison. I bet you won't find him guilty of religion since there is not such thing in the US.

Well if Obama is the Antichrist then we're right on schedule for Dec. 21 2012 right? Anyways, shouldn't the evangelicals be excited that soon armegeddon will be upon us and monsters are going to eat us and god is going to battle and all that jazz right? I think a lot of evangelicals already think it'll be the end of the world if they vote for a dem, this is just another brick in that path.
