Quote John 3:16 for an oil change(CNN)–"For God so loved the world, He gave a giant discount on an oil change," is not exactly how John 3:16 goes in the New Testament, but that is the interpretation one Texas businessman is using. CNN affiliate KTVT reports customers can get a steep discount if they recite John 3:16. KTVT reports the idea comes from Plano, Texas businessman Charlie Whittington, who owns Kwik Kar. There has been some push back from some customers but Whittington is sticking by his religiously minded discount. “If I’m standing for what I believe, so be it,” he told KTVT. “Bring it on.” One Dallas attorney who spoke to the station said the discount appears to be within the law. “The study of the Bible has many rewards. I’m not sure that God intended a lube discount to be among its many riches,” Andy Siegel told KTVT. John 3:16 has been a standard bearer in simply explaining the Christian message. The reference is routinely painted on placards and waved at sporting events. In the Gospel of John, the King James Version recounts Jesus telling Nicodemus the pharisee, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." |

Let me get this straight-
Al I have to do is say some mumbo-pocus words and I get a cheap oil change? I'd do that in a heartbeat! What's with the little dude who is afraid of saying some "magic words" in order to get an even more foolish little dude to give him a cheap oil change? What's he afraid of?
As a person who doesn't believe in magic gods, I have no qualms about repeating someone else's secret magic words if they give me free stuff for doing it. As soon as you become offended by secret magic words, you have given real power to those words. They're nothing but nonsense. Say the words, save some money, enjoy your life. Would the same atheist in the video have made an issue out of the situation if the clerk had only required him to say "I'm not going to pay a lot for this oil change"?

that's a very good point...but it still irks me. It's the arrogance that he makes people that want to use his business say his hocus pocus words...even if they're not believers of that particular hocus pocus. It's ridiculous. Well, why not? You can give a discount for any reason you like. Anybody can look up John 3:16 (you do not have to be a member of anything) I'd rather get a discount for John 3:16 than for a coupon clipped from Pennysaver or proof of purchase at Denny's. A John 3:16 discount makes more sense to me than 99% of what comes out of Washington or the New AYork Times.

i stand by my SUN. using the law of conservation of matter and energy, the energy given off by the sun simply transferrs to us thru food and warmth, but the whorshipping goes beyond that. if the planet were even just a few hundred feet closer to mars we would be very cold all the time, if closer to the sun by equal distance, very very hot. so everything points to the sun as the true life giving object to whorship if you were to whorship anything- logically speaking!
