Dalai Lama scraps trip to South Africa; Tutu lashes out

Johannesburg (CNN) - Miffed by a visa delay that led the Dalai Lama to cancel a trip to South Africa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu lashed out at his government Tuesday, saying it had acted worse than apartheid regimes and had forgotten all that the nation stood for.

"When we used to apply for passports under the apartheid government, we never knew until the last moment what their decision was," Tutu said at a news conference. "Our government is worse than the apartheid government because at least you were expecting it from the apartheid government.

"I have to say that I can't believe this. I really can't believe this," Tutu said. "You have to wake me up and tell me this is actually happening here."

The Dalai Lama scrapped his planned trip to South Africa this week after the nation failed to issue him a visa in time, his spokesman said.

What is it that the Dalai Lama do, apart from travelling all over the world. Nothing really comes from his visits where ever that is.

    1. " It is true that many exponents of Buddhism, most notably the Dalai Lama, have been remarkably willing to enrich (and even constrain) their view of the world through dialogue with modern science. But the fact that the Dalai Lama regularly meets with Western scientists to discuss the nature of the mind does not mean that Buddhism, or Tibetan Buddhism, or even the Dalai Lama’s own lineage, is uncontaminated by religious dogmatism.

Indeed, there are ideas within Buddhism that are so incredible as to render the dogma of the vir-gin birth plausible by comparison. No one is served by a mode of discourse that treats such pre-literate notions as integral to our evolving dis-course about the nature of the human mind. Among Western Buddhists, there are college-educated men and women who apparently believe that Guru Rinpoche was actually born from a lotus. This is not the spiritual breakthrough that civilization has been waiting for these many centuries."

Buddhism, like most other religions including African Animism and Christianity, adapts to and is influenced by the culture it is planted in. Like Christianity, there are many different sort of Buddhism. These different takes do not seem to hate each other and seek the death of the others like Christian paths do. They have yet to go out and force anyone to convert as did many Christian leaders over the last 2000 years. They will not kill you if you convert to another faith and they will not tell you you will go to HeII for believing things they don't believe. If you bothered to read any of the books by the Dalai Lama you would know that his take does not even require a belief in god. It is a path for living not a path that leads to an afterlife. Its main tenant is to seek to be compassionate to yourself and others. Being born of the lotus is not about being born out of a flower. It is symbolic and the lotus is the higher mind. It is less confusing than the 2 creation stories in Genesis that are stolen from the older book: The Epic of Gilgamesh. The virgin birth is not Biblical. Virgin is a young woman whether she was hymen intact or not.

The Dalai Lama is well known for his interest in science. He has always been that way, even as a child. He was startled by the idea of mental illness in the West and the difficulty of treating it. It is not a big thing in the East. His response was to learn about it, study the science, and develop compassion for those who suffer. When asked by some one what he would do if it turned out that there was no reincarnation he said he would have to change his beliefs.

Not true. He did get his visa (or maybe he was an illegal immigrant) and then we can just jump straight to Mormons.

I know the government should be treating people as equal, but isn't it kinda ridiculous for the Dalai Lama, a known figure, to have so many problems with obtaining a visa?

    October 4, 2011 at 1:28 pm |
    • Because . . .

The answer is China. China has put pressure on every government that accomodates the Dalai Lama in any way, and China has a LOT of economic clout.

"China has put pressure on every government that accomodates the Dalai Lama in any way, "

      Not true.

China objects to the Dalai Lama's globetrotting only when it lends to legitimacy to his fight for Tibet Independence.

Let us call a spade a spade.
