Doomsday ministry scrubs end of world predictions from website

By Dan Merica, CNN

(CNN) - The Christian radio broadcasting network that touted Harold Camping's failed doomsday predictions may be getting out of the prophecy business, adopting what appears to be a vaguer vision of the end times.

"We are to live so that we are ready for the return of Christ, and even pray for it," according to a Family Radio statement obtained by The Christian Post. "But we also rejoice in every new day, that we've been given another day to occupy and serve our Lord."

Gallery and explainer: Doomsdays through time

Family Radio, which Camping founded in 1958, had posted an explainer detailing why Camping's prediction that May 21 would be the beginning of the end didn't come to pass.

That explainer got yanked from the Family Radio website earlier this week.

Camping had originally said that those selected for salvation would be raptured up to heaven on May 21, and those left behind would face months of judgment amid destruction before the world's end on October 21.

Novel explores "The Leftovers" after the Rapture

The Family Radio website tweaked the prediction after May 21, saying God had shown mercy by sparing people five months of suffering. But final judgment was still slated to come on October 21, when salvation and the world's destruction would happen at once.

But according to the Christian Post, Family Radio is now painting a more fluid picture of doomsday, a departure from the definite dates that Camping set earlier in the year.

"Thy command is still to occupy until he comes," the statement obtained by Christian Post said. "We are still to go teach and tell. Every day we, who are Christians, live in attention.

CNN's calls to Harold Camping and Family Radio went unanswered.

When the world didn't end last week, Camping followers who gathered for a regular Sunday fellowship meeting questioned if they had been left behind, according to Brandon Tauszik, a documentarian who began attending the meetings this year.

"Numbers were a bit down, for the first time I had ever seen, but people showed up much like they did after May 21," said Tauszik, who attends the Oakland, California fellowship meetings out of interest and who never believed the world would end. "People were coming together, speaking outside, asking where we went wrong."

The faith of Camping's most ardent followers was not swayed by the recent news.

According to Fred Store, a longtime Family Radio listener, the general belief is "Judgment Day did in fact occur on May 21."

CNN's Jessica Ravitz contributed to this report.

Many of these people are indeed fools. However, be carefull when berating their faith.

It's amazing these people are supposed to know the Bible. It clearly says, NO ONE KNOWS THE DAY OR HOUR, Jesus will return like a theif in the night. This would lead anyone that has read the Bible to know if a date is predicted, then that day is surely not the correct date... Why would the Bible say the hour is NOT KNOWN if it was able to be predicted?

How many of you "experts" who ahve been posting claims concerning the history of the Bible have ever read Eusebius of Caesarea's "Ecclesiastical History"? How many of you have studied the wrtings of the pre-Constantine era Church Fathers? How many of you can even name any of the pre-Constantine era Church Fathers? If not, will you do yourselves, and the rest of us a favor, and stop putting your glaring ingnorance concerning the history of the Bible on this blog for all the world to see? In layman's terms...if you can't back up your claims with genuine historical evidence, you need to STFU!

And who would be averse to the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself. And We had chosen him in this world, and indeed he, in the Hereafter, will be among the righteous. 2:130

When his Lord said to him, "Submit", he said "I have submitted [in Islam] to the Lord of the worlds." 2:131

And Abraham instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Jacob, [saying], "O my sons, indeed Allah has chosen for you this religion, so do not die except while you are Muslims." 2:132

Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac – one God. And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
    2:133

That was a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do. 2:134

They say, "Be Jews or Christians [so] you will be guided." Say, "Rather, [we follow] the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists." 2:135

Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him." 2:136

So if they believe in the same as you believe in, then they have been [rightly] guided; but if they turn away, they are only in dissension, and Allah will be sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing. 2:137

[And say, "Ours is] the religion of Allah . And who is better than Allah in [ordaining] religion? And we are worshippers of Him." 2:138

Say, [O Muhammad], "Do you argue with us about Allah while He is our Lord and your Lord? For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. And we are sincere [in deed and intention] to Him." 2:39

Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants were Jews or Christians? Say, "Are you more knowing or is Allah ?" And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from Allah ? And Allah is not unaware of what you do. 2:140

That is a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do. 2:141

Indeed, We sent down to you the Book for the people in truth. So whoever is guided – it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment. And you are not a manager over them. 39:41

Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. 39:42

Or have they taken other than Allah as intercessors? Say, "Even though they do not possess [power over] anything, nor do they reason?" 39:43

Say, "To Allah belongs [the right to allow] intercession entirely. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Then to Him you will be returned." 39:44
      ---–

And it was already revealed to you and to those before you that if you should associate [anything] with Allah , your work would surely become worthless, and you would surely be among the losers." 39:65

Rather, worship [only] Allah and be among the grateful. 39:66
      ----

Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was. 3:59
The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters. 3:60

Satan does his job so well. But then so does the Bible. It say’s people like this will be in the last day’s. (Matthew 24:24-25) . . .false prophets will arise and will give great signs and wonders so as to mislead, if possible, even the chosen ones. 25 Look! I have forewarned you.

False religions teaching doctrines of man is why there is so much apathy regarding our Creator today. Don't give up! The Bible holds great rewards for those who stay the course!

It’s true that the Bible does say nobody knows, not the angles or even Jesus the day nor hour outside of God Himself! (Matthew 24:36) 36 “Concerning that day and hour nobody knows, neither the angels of the heavens nor the Son, but only the Father. . . . If this is the case how can ANY man know? It will not take long for a very large group to turn a deaf ear to the reality of what is really going on, Satan has done his job yet again.

(Luke 17:26-27) 26 Moreover, just as it occurred in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of man: 27 they were eating, they were drinking, men were marrying, women were being given in marriage, until that day when Noah entered into the ark, and the flood arrived and destroyed them all.

We were not left in a lurch in not knowing what is going on behind the scene, Jesus did answer his disciples when they asked for a sign of his return to clean up the earth.
(Matthew 24:3) . . .While he was sitting upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately, saying: “Tell us, When will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?” . . . . He went on to give them not a bunch of signs, but rather one composite of the world conditions. This composite fits today’s world like a fingerprint matches a person. (Matthew 24:4-14)

He summed up this composite saying that “this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come.” . . . Guess what, it’s being done by the only people that will use Gods name. What’s more, it’s almost done.

(Daniel 12:4) 4 “And as for you, O Daniel, make secret the words and seal up the book, until the time of the end. Many will rove about, and the true knowledge will become abundant.”

It’s true we don’t know the day nor hour but we do know the season. It’s time to open your door for our Creator. (Acts 17:27) 27 for them to seek God, if they might grope for him and really find him, although, in fact, he is not far off from each one of us.

(Answer your door, He is sending His messengers to YOU)!

So...I guess the last days have been what...every day for the last 1500+ years?

Cuz this crap has been going on for at least that long.

When the bible was written people were jaded, they didn't view the universe and world as we do today. They viewed it as small and egocentric. So...when a city gets hit with an asteroid...or the plague hits...that is end of days. Indeed, for all those who perished. I doubt those who wrote the bible ever envisioned this far ahead.

(Matthew 24:4-14) 4 And in answer Jesus said to them: “Look out that nobody misleads you; 5 for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many. 6 you are going to hear of wars and reports of wars; see that you are not terrified. For these things must take place, but the end is not yet.

7 “For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another. 8 All these things are a beginning of pangs of distress.

9 “Then people will deliver you up to tribulation and will kill you, and you will be objects of hatred by all the nations on account of my name. 10 Then, also, many will be stumbled and will betray one another and will hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and mislead many; 12 and because of the increasing of lawlessness the love of the greater number will cool off. 13 But he that has endured to the end is the one that will be saved. 14 And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come. . . . .(This witness is very near completion by the ONLY people that proudly use Gods universally important name).

      Also:

(2 Timothy 3:1-5) 3 But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away.

These scriptures fit the composite of the world today like your DNA matches you.

Get a clue worshippers – all religion is pure bunkum. The only God on Earth is your conscience and subconscious. You've yours, I've got mine, and none of them can communicate with any others. That's why we have so many "only true god" religions

    October 28, 2011 at 7:42 pm |

This is very closed minded, you're far too sure of the now, when you shouldn't be. Even if you were actually correct and certain about the now, you don't know the then or the later on.

Death may not be the end that you think it maybe and the afterlife may be quite different from your disembodied soul floating through the clouds. No you could very well find yourself remade from the dirt in a thousand, ten thousand, or one hundred thousand years.

If I couldn't prove that god exists, but yet had the ability to make a facsimile capable of resurrecting people by rebuilding their every feature on a subatomic scale, I would.

Unfortunately, this is not beneficial to me, the faithful will probably tell you why.

      Enjoy the ride.

JAG...historically, the "John" whose name appears with the last book is there only because a Pope put it there. The book supposedly washed up on shore approx. 200 years after the death of Jesus of Nazareth. No known author. The Pope then attributed the writing to John, but NOT to any of the John's from the bible. Just John. Oh, and the pope did this after the Council met and decided to make this story (non-Hebrew origination) a part of the bible. The pope's infallibility belief then gave the concurrence of God to the decision to make this part of the bible.
So, if you believe this book is part of the bible, then you must accept the infallibility of the Roman Catholic Pope.

    October 28, 2011 at 7:38 pm |

...and I do believe in the infallibility of the Pope. So now what?

      October 28, 2011 at 8:16 pm |
    • ZweiStein

I'm trying to say that so many other (non-Roman Catholic) Christian Faiths do NOT believe in the infallibility of the Pope, yet do include this book in their version of the Bible. Some, such as the Jehova's witnesses seem to make this book the most important part of their religion. Much of that book actually contradicts the teachings of Jesus himself (which many Christian faiths ignore.)

Unshaken by reality, those who pray will continue to believe the fairy tales they are fed from the time they can listen until they die they will believe the teachings of people who lived during a time when they thought the earth was flat and that the sun revolved around the earth. They didnt know that someday there would be phones and cars and planes and that someone would actually go to the moon. They didnt have indoor plumbing. Most of them didn't have an indoors. Many of their philosophies have merit, but the devil is truly in the details when it comes to modern religion. It is mostly counterintuitive and has little basis in reality. They teach that it is better to accept authority than search for understanding. They have always been wrong, but that does not deter the followers. The trust is and has always been their most trusted source. This does not serve them well in the 21st century.

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation–as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.
