'Tebowing' prayer stirs debate, but quarterback is OK with it

By Steve Almasy, CNN

(CNN) - Tim Tebow is used to being a lightning rod. While he was the quarterback at the University of Florida, he drew a lot of attention. And we mean a lot.

He won the Heisman Trophy (the only sophomore to ever win the award), and his team won two NCAA football titles. Plus, he was very public about his Christian faith. He wore Bible verses on his eye black. He invoked God frequently at news conferences.

No one doubted that Tebow was a great college quarterback and a good kid. But all the media attention made some people weary of the name.  He's good, they said, but he's no messiah.

Being a great college quarterback doesn’t always translate into being a good pro quarterback and, let’s be honest, there are more than a few people taking great glee from the second-year player's recent struggles with the Denver Broncos.

And even some of Tebow's better moments on the field are sowing controversy. During an October 23 contest against the winless Miami Dolphins, the Broncos trailed until a last-minute touchdown and two-point conversion by Tebow tied the score. Denver won in overtime.

Afterward, Jared Kleinstein, a Denver-born Broncos fan who was watching the game from New York, noticed that Tebow had knelt in prayer, alone on the sidelines, while his teammates celebrated on the field.

Kleinstein decided to take a picture outside the New York bar where he had gathered with friends. Six of them knelt on their knees with their balled-up right fists to their faces, Tebow-style.

Kleinstein started a website, www.tebowing.com, defining Tebow as a verb: “To get down on a knee and start praying, even if everyone else around you is doing something completely different.” His photo was the first one posted.

More photos came in from around the world. People Tebowed from the Philippines, the Vatican, Iraq, even in front of the Great Pyramid. They Tebowed at the airport, at the hospital, even at an "Occupy Chicago" protest. As of Tuesday,  Kleinstein had posted more than 600 photos on his site.

Tebow, for his part, approves. “Love it,” he wrote on Twitter.

But did he love it when Detroit Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch sacked him in an October 30 game and proceeded to “Tebow?”

“He was celebrating and having fun with his teammates. I don’t take offense to that,” Tebow said during a session with the media last week.

Tebow, who has started three games for the 3-5 Broncos, does not shy away from criticism of his quarterbacking - or of his faith. The son of missionaries, he embraces his spotlight to draw attention to his Christianity. He and his mother appeared in a Focus on the Family anti-abortion ad that appeared during the Super Bowl in February.

That kind of faith-based boldness separates Tebow from other religious sports figures. His more public displays hearten supporters and enrage detractors.

Some commentators, like ESPN.com writer Jemele Hill, think making sport of Tebow's beliefs is offensive. She writes of Tulloch's Tebowing pose:

Prayer is a sacred component of any religion. Making fun of someone else's spiritual connection is on par with ridiculing them about their family. You don't have to be a Christian to get that, just someone who understands the concept of respect.

Former Indianapolis Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian, says there is some jealousy of Tebow among other NFL players. But he doubts the Lions were making fun of the quarterback, even though another player Tebowed after scoring a touchdown during the same game against Denver, a 45-10 rout.

“I don’t believe people are saying, 'I am going to mock his faith,'" Dungy said on his website, All Pro Dad.

Former NFL quarterback Phil Simms isn’t surprised that other players want a piece of a player who is new to the league and whom the media obsesses over.

“They want to see you [succeed] on the field first,” Simms said in a video on Sports Illustrated’s website.

Tebow acknowledges that some who have sent their pictures into the Tebowing website are making fun of him and some are mocking religion. But he told the Denver Post he prefers not to judge anyone. He told reporter Lindsay H. Jones:

"It's not my job to see people's reasons behind it, but I know (of a kid) with cancer that tweeted me, 'Tebowing while I'm chemoing' — how cool is that? That's worth it right now. If that gives him any encouragement or puts a smile on his face, or gives him encouragement to pray, that's completely awesome."

What do you think? Are people being disrespectful of religion by Tebowing? Was Tebow asking for it?

Ill be ordering a Tebow jersey this weekend. He lives his convictions, which is more than most people will ever be able to say. Keep doing what you do Tim.

      Dennis
Are you suggesting that other NFL players don't? Or anybody else for that matter? This article gave you such a hard on for Tebow they you are going to fill the NFL's pockets with your hard earned cash? That makes sense.

They know everything about the wants, needs and desires of their non-corporeal, extra-dimensional, impossible to discern super ent.ity. That's how they knew the stories they wrote about him 2000 years ago must be true given the copious evidence supporting his existence. How could anyone possibly consider otherwise? Now excuse me while I go ride my unicorn into my private portal to the purple fields on Askalfar in the Andromeda galaxy. Be back in time for afternoon tea.

HS, I did and I have read the ah...."letter" (?) I assume you mean the Bible. I know exactly what answer you all should be giving me, but you have not given it. Not surprising. We Athiests and Agnostics have to spend a lot of time teaching Christians their own religion.

Besides HeavenSent who has nothing to add here, anybody? anybody? Ferris?

It is the belief that the Creator, the one God, the Alpha and the Omega, who created Earth and all of it's inhabitants does know when we will enter this realm as well as when we will leave it. Some, who believe in other faiths, call it Fate, and others call it their own time. I believe that people are ignoring you because it even says in the Bible that the Creator is "all knowing" or omniscient (spelling?) but then again, you know this and I am humoring you...so believe what you will.

The purpose of this is to acknowledge that Tim Tebow walks the walk and talks the talk. He IS his faith and in this day and time, this is so rare. Shame really. Tim is a great person for our kids to look up to. He believes in God, Family, Education and then Football. He graduated from the University of Florida first before entering the draft. He knows and understands that his tenure as an athlete will end while he is still young and knew that he would need to have a backup plan. He is truly a wonderful young man, a young man who is real. So, while others diss him for his beliefs, it is his leadership, on and off the field, with and without faith that provide us the hero for our children to look up to. God bless you Timmy!

Witchywoman, right on. And that God you speak of is the Flying Spaghetti Monster. He nourishes us fully and touches us all with his noodliness. Not like that Christian god, with those puny communion wafer thingies.

PS I like witchy. You might be just my type.

So does Witchywoman speak for the rest of you? Thanks Witchy, if you could just filter your answer down to the question I asked. I think you said Yes and Yes. Is that correct?

And you are wrong, they are not ignoring me for any other reason other than they have not read the Bible and they are hypocrites.

    • AtheistSteve

      Shouldn't WitchyWoman be a pagan?

Anyway just to raise a point about my last post none of the things I postulated are beyond reason. A unicorn or analog of such could conceivably be created by gene manipulation, a portal or "stargate" is within the theoretically possible(albeit extremely unlikely) to construct, Andromeda exists and purple fields not much of a stretch given we have eggplants and cabbage.

Yes and yes. It takes less faith and is more intelligent to believe in God... A master creator whose wisdom and power is far beyond our puny human ability to reason. God is all knowing and all powerful and knows the moment you were conceived and knows the exact minute you will die. To believe that we all "just happened" and that everything is up to chance takes a far greater exercise of faith. Do you really think that our delicate and highly complex bodies just happened? Not to mention the fact that we can reproduce exact replicas... happened by chance? I think the chance of that happening is about the same as a book factory blowing up, sending the pages of the bible exploding into air, then falling page by page, in perfect order, back into a book. Think about it.

Hello Mr. Alien. If God is the creator of space-time, then it would seem reasonable to assume that God knows all of the events that happen in space-time. From God's perspective, time would not seem to flow as it seems to flow for us. As described in the Bible, He is transcendent. He is "everywhen". Thus "A day is a thousand years and a thousand years as a day". So, the answer seems to be yes. God knows. However, I cannot say for certain. But this has been covered by Augustine. Haven't you heard?

BTW, you said most of us weren't responding because we haven't read our Bibles and are hypocrites. It's more likely that most of us don't want to waste our time talking to people who just want to pick a fight - especially when they are arrogant and uninformed. We were told not to cast our pearls before... well, you've read it, so you know.

    • Witchywoman

      Pravda,

As someone who has read the Quaran (aka Koran) and the Bible and all of the other Holy Books that teach us how to live a good life, they are all the same. They teach us that the Creator only wants us to love one another. He has sent teachers out there – some we listen to, and some we don't. If Mr. Tebow were Muslim, he would be that which leads and doesn't follow and again teaches that God is Love.

So, while I understand that so many don't understand the Religion of Islam, it is because they have never read the Good Book. They stick to their own ideals and fail to open their minds to what God truly wants us to know. In this, Mr. Tebow leads as he teaches love, faith and fellowship.

It is national news because whether he is on the field or off, he walks the walk.

Witchywoman, actually all the phony religions in the world took 95% of Jesus' truth about life and the hereafter, added 5% of satan's lies to confuse and cause doubt in the world about Jesus being our Lord and Savior. It's in the Bible how Lucifer is the father of all lies. Oh, that's right, you read this truth.

HS, again your ignorance knows no bounds. Jesus is the liar and the thief. While his message was, by most accounts, positive, he stole his beliefs from many religions that proceeded him. He was a Jewish Rabbi with his hand out, just like preachers and priests of today.

Bob, you said: "So why did god give those poor kids cancer to begin with?"

Answer: Why do you say that God gave them cancer? Why do atheists use this same old tired argument? They all claim that it's God's fault that bad things happened. No. You are incorrect. God did not give anyone cancer. Mankind has created pollutants, impurities and done other things that have increased the risks for cancer. Did God create cigarettes? No. In your theory, God must be handing out lung cancer to people who have been smoking for 40 years. It must have nothing to do with smoking, right? It's all God's fault, right?

Yes, I know that children do not smoke. Maybe their parents did and caused damage to their own reproductive organs and introduced harmful elements. Maybe their parents did drugs or are alcoholic. Maybe dad got exposed to asbestos.

Still want to continue blaming God? Your kind ramble about practicality and logic, but all you do is cry about how it's all God's fault and you don't even stop to think about what the underlying causes are of everything. You're no better than someone like me. I believe in Jesus and you call me blind. Yet you are blind to the simplicity in all of the answers to the stupid questions you ask.

Well, when all ye Christians claim everything good that happens was somehow God working in mysterious ways or answering prayers, all atheists are doing is asking the question "What about the other payers that go unanswered if it works that way? Why give credit to him for the good things but not the bad?"

Oh and if you believe God made all plants on the planet then yes, he did make tobacco which has been being dried and smoked for centuries.

God created plants, but that doesn't mean we should set them on fire and inhale the smoke. God created rocks too. Should we start bashing people in the head with them, since God created them for some unknown, obscure purpose? Good luck to Tebow, and everyone.......but what is he praying about? "Thank you, Creator of the Universe, for allowing me to complete that 7 yard pass and I know you want my team to win"..........does he think God could be cajoled into becoming a Broncos fan? Does he think that we will be so awestruck by his piety that we too will want to ask favors of the Invisible Man In The Sky?

Perhaps he is praying for the strength and focus to be the best he can be at his chosen profession. I'm not religious but I am a firm believer in the right of anyone to express their religious belief without fear of reprisal. What ever the motivation of the Tebowers, Mr. Tebow choses to take the high road and think the best of his fellow humans. Good on him.

Bob, you ranted "HS, actually, you seem to be the down-and-out miserable one here. And don't try calling me a communist again. I've created more business wealth in the past year than you will in your lifetime."

Answer: Bob, if you don't love and follow Jesus you love and follow Satan. All communist follow Satan. Plus, money is the root of all evil. We are not our money. Haven't you read that scripture? Guess, not.

P.S. another phony handle named Bob, writing to the phony heavensent. You atheists are so pathetic and sad.

He knows the outcome of football games and bets on them. God always needs money, and the church just ain't raking that in like it used to, so now he has to gamble.

....Because god cares about your sport. If god existed, I believe he'd scoff at people who play sports for a living while others struggle all of their lives to support their families. And then these tights-wearing fancy lads have the audacity to pray?

"Oh dear lord, please give me the badassedness to score a winning touchdown so that I might get that $100M contract next year. I deserve it, I work so hard."

  12. Andrew

I don't think it matters what I think. I think it matters what Tebow thinks, and what the intent behind "Tebowing" is in each case. I personally believe that the intent behind an event determines whether it is good or bad...not the result.

    November 9, 2011 at 5:23 pm |
    • John

Religion is a belief system. I think its a personal decision and one that should be respected as long as it does not disrespect another religion or faith. I do not believe myself God influences sports. I think God gives you the abilities and you as a person make the most of them. I do not think God plays favorites.

  14. Reality

"Tebowing" the right way with a prayer:

The Apostles' Creed 2011: (updated by yours truly and based on the studies of historians and theologians of the past 200 years- references available upon request)

Should I believe in a god whose existence cannot be proven
and said god if he/she/it exists resides in an unproven,
human-created, spirit state of bliss called heaven??

I believe there was a 1st century CE, Jewish, simple,
preacher-man who was conceived by a Jewish carpenter
named Joseph living in Nazareth and born of a young Jewish
girl named Mary. (Some say he was a mamzer.)

Jesus was summarily crucified for being a temple rabble-rouser by
the Roman troops in Jerusalem serving under Pontius Pilate,

He was buried in an unmarked grave and still lies
a-mouldering in the ground somewhere outside of
    Jerusalem.

Said Jesus' story was embellished and "mythicized" by
many semi-fiction writers. A descent into Hell, a bodily resurrection
and ascension stories were promulgated to compete with the
Caesar myths. Said stories were so popular that they
grew into a religion known today as Catholicism/Christianity
and featuring dark-age, daily wine to blood and bread to body rituals
called the eucharistic sacrifice of the non-atoning Jesus.

I say good for Tebow. Here we have someone who calmly talks about his Christian faith, does numerous good works for charities and helping out those elss fortunate. What is his return? Being mocked and ridiculed both on and off the field. If this world was full of people with the heart and compassion of Tebow then it'd be a much better place.

The Bible really is accurate when it says this world loves what is wicked and those who do good will be mocked.

Alfonzo, as far as being the word of god, the bible sure gets a lot of stuff wrong, and it says contradictory things too. Surely you are aware of that, aren't you?

God Bless Tim Tebow for living his faith. Tim will tell you, his relationship with his Lord is the number 1 thing in his life. For all of you doubters, you dont deserve scorn, you deserve pity, compassion and some tebowing (prayer). God loves you so much he sacrificed His Son for you. Im so thankful someone like Tim finally came along and has become a public inspiration. Thank you God for Tim Tebow.

@ Chucles, God loves you Chuckles, but eventually, you'll face him, and he'll remind you of the times you had a chance to understand who He is, and you laughed and ignored it (you even made fun of those that did believe in Him). I fully agree. Tim is an inspiration in a depraved world. There are some outspoken people who overshadow the many of us who find a proclamation of faith a refreshing event today. Those who do not respect his right to express his religious beliefs do not appreciate the heritage upon which this nation was founded, the right to religious freedom. He is not imposing his beliefs on others but if others choose to join him, THEY are the winners.

      November 9, 2011 at 6:41 pm |
