Pastor fights HIV stigma in Southern town

By Jacque Wilson, CNN

Dorchester, South Carolina (CNN) - The fan by the window pushed humid air uselessly against the church pews.

Diana Martinez made small talk as Tommy Terry shifted uncomfortably in his seat. The man sitting next to Martinez cracked a joke. Nobody laughed.

A clock on the back wall ticked minutes away in a mocking cliché.

Indeed AIDS is heaven-sent to smite the wicked. Very, very, very, few ever got AIDS from blood transfusions. It is gotten from depraved s-e-x and from illicit drug use. We should give thanks and praise for justice!

And the individual who gets it from a transfusion?

      November 29, 2011 at 11:11 am |
    • Wow

So DrDoIT the fact that it originated in Africa between hunters and monkeys makes it a disease for deviants huh? Or what about the spread of the disease through drug use and needles? By the way the APA even states that the HIV/AIDS pandemic is another area in which prejudice and discrimination against lesbian, gay, and bisexual people have had negative effects. Early in the pandemic, the assumption that HIV/AIDS was a “gay disease” contributed to the delay in addressing the massive social upheaval that AIDS would generate. That's right moron it wasn't a "gay disease", only prejudice people like you believe that crap especially when you factor in that roughly 67% of those living with HIV/AIDS are in Africa.

As a Christian, I am appaled by your claims. I'm 15 and have enough sense to know that HIV/AIDS is not punishment. my God would not punish Gays, he loves all equally. I dont know about your "God".

Answer: Fact, CDC doctors and epidemiologists first located the virus among the bath house patrons in California. The warning went out world wide ... focusing on the gay communities warning folks in order that they can be quickly educated to save their lives which consisted of refraining from their lifestyles that spread the virus world wide.

Stop reading everything with hate and malice because you will miss the messages completely as did most folks at the beginning of this health crisis.

      Amen.

You are so full of shit. Even the CDC website states. "The earliest known case of infection with HIV-1 in a human was detected in a blood sample collected in 1959 from a man in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

More for CDC "For many years scientists theorized as to the origins of HIV and how it appeared in the human population, most believing that HIV originated in other primates. Then in 1999, an international team of researchers reported that they had discovered the origins of HIV-1, the predominant strain of HIV in the developed world. A subspecies of chimpanzees native to west equatorial Africa had been identified as the original source of the virus. The researchers believe that HIV-1 was introduced into the human population when hunters became exposed to infected blood."

  4. THE BIBLE IS GARBAGE

RELIGION IS A DISEASE THAT ISN'T GOING TO FIX THE AIDS PROBLEM. IT'S LIKE STIRRING CANCER AND AIDS TOGETHER IN A BUCKET AND THINKING THEY'LL CANCEL EACH OTHER OUT.

I have been a member of the the "Black" Church for more than 25 years, from what I see, AIDS carry a heavy stigma. The "Black" Church doesn't really accept anyone in the "Lifestyle". But that is changing now as more and more people are coming out and demanding the same rights as everyone else.

According to PEW polls, in 1987 some 60% of evangelicals believed AIDS to be God's punishment for being gay.
Thankfully, this number has dropped to 38%.

If I had a Grandpa, who was as perverted as the Christian god, I'd have had him put in a home.

Christian thinking has been a victim of their make believe god.

A god that is more interested in our genitals, than in our welfare.

Oh, my believers! Remove your devotion to this latest crop of gods, and allow them to go where all forgotten gods go.

Any hope your god gives is false. Any help, is imagined. Any "inspired" word a work of men, reflecting the morals and knowledge of ancient people. People obsessed with their genitals. LOL

You allow yourself to believe god helped you find your keys, but ignore that he allowed a child to die of cancer.

A lovely day for a picnic! Thank you Jesus! Oh, an earthquake in Ja_pan you say? How many people died? Umm...Thank you Jesus?

There is no god peering at you, as you sit upon the toilet or holding another person.

When you pray, you are talking to yourself. Your brain generates any warm and fuzzy feelings, not a god or his agent. You can get the same results by praying and worshiping a carton of milk. All it takes is faith.

Listen to your Uncle Dave! I will exorcise the silly from you! I will set you free!

      Cheers!

The Byrths sound like good, caring people. It's a shame that the fear of god and social stigma have created a situation where the very education that might save lives is treated like a dirty secret.
