Obama delivers very Christian message at Christmas tree lighting

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - President Barack Obama delivered an unusually stark Christian message at the White House Christmas tree lighting Thursday night, saying Christ's message "lies at the heart of my Christian faith and that of millions of Americans."

"More than 2,000 years ago, a child was born to two faithful travelers who could find rest only in a stable, among the cattle and the sheep," Obama said at the tree lighting ceremony, a longstanding White House tradition.

"But this was not just any child," Obama continued. "Christ’s birth made the angels rejoice and attracted shepherds and kings from afar. He was a manifestation of God’s love for us."

Obama has been more public and specific about his religious beliefs since polls last year showed that only a minority of Americans know he is Christian. Last Easter, Obama got unusually specific about his beliefs on Christ's resurrection at a White House prayer breakfast.

Some conservative Christian leaders have questioned Obama's Christian faith, even though Obama got his start in politics through church-based political organizing and has written about accepting Jesus in his 20s.

Last month, South Carolina Christian conservative leader Bob Jones III told a reporter “I’ve no reason to think (Obama is) Christian."

“Some people will say whatever they think the politically helpful thing would be,” Jones said. “I say, ‘Where is the evidence that he is a Christian?’ ”

In his remarks at Thursday's tree lighting, Obama said that Jesus "grew up to become a leader with a servant’s heart who taught us a message as simple as it is powerful: that we should love God, and love our neighbor as ourselves."

"So long as the gifts and the parties are happening, it’s important for us to keep in mind the central message of this season," he said, "and keep Christ’s words not only in our thoughts, but also in our deeds."

    The nitty-gritty:

“John Hick, a noted British philosopher of religion, estimates that 95 percent of the people of the world owe their religious affiliation to an accident (the randomness) of birth. The faith of the vast majority of believers depends upon where they were born and when. Those born in Saudi Arabia will almost certainly be Moslems, and those born and raised in India will for the most part be Hindus. Nevertheless, the religion of millions of people can sometimes change abruptly in the face of major political and social upheavals. In the middle of the sixth century ce, virtually all the people of the Near East and Northern Africa, including Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Egypt were Christian. By the end of the following century, the people in these lands were largely Moslem, as a result of the militant spread of Islam.

    The Situation Today

Barring military conquest, conversion to a faith other than that of one’s birth is rare. Some Jews, Moslems, and Hindus do convert to Christianity, but not often. Similarly, it is not common for Christians to become Moslems or Jews. Most people are satisfied that their own faith is the true one or at least good enough to satisfy their religious and emotional needs. Had St. Augustine or St. Thomas Aquinas been born in Mecca at the start of the present century, the chances are that they would not have been Christians but loyal followers of the prophet Mohammed. “ J. Somerville

It is very disturbing that religious narrow- mindedness, intolerance, violence and hatred continues unabated due to randomness of birth. Maybe, just maybe if this fact would be published on the first page of every newspaper every day, that we would finally realize the significant stupidity of all religions.

Let us remember this Christmas season that God gave us the best Gift when he gave us his only begotten Son who suffered and died but rose to redeem all who believe in him so that they need not suffer the pains of hell. Merry Christmas everyone!

Let us remember during "greedy gift getting" season that the probability that any god exists or that the jesus myth is true is virtually zero. If any benevolent god exists and jesus is real, they are certainly doing a crappy job of looking after the meek.

Remember to walk Christ like. As a Christian you should let your vocabulary be a representation of love without bitterness or hate. Don't condemn anyone, for it was Paul who stated that we should become like all men in order to save some. Remember to not be like the Pharisees, for the end time is at hand. Go (2/3rds of God) out into the world and preach the gospel so that all men will have the opportunity to acknowledge the Lord and be saved by His Grace and Mercy. Blessings, Peace and Abundance to all!

I find it facinating to watch people try to discredit and attack a book which they believe to be fiction. If I thought that "Gulliver's Travels" was fiction, I would spend zero time and effort attacking it and trying "prove" it to be fiction. Zero. Some on this blog seem to be obsessed with doing so, however. If I was a neutral observer, I would want to know why they devote soooooo much time to attacking the Bible. If it is so much a fallacy, why can't they just leave it at that and move on? Unless they know that if the Bible is true, then they will have to give an account to a Power much higher than themselves? They just want to justify their sinful lives. Still, if it is false-why waste time attacking it?

You said "Couldn't god just have forgiven us all without having his son brutally murdered? Doesn't make much sense to even the least educated of us"...

You see, friend, that's just something that God can show you, but so long you lean on your own understanding you will never understand. No education could ever open your eyes to it., but in fact can blind you, which is the case with all who lean on it to undrstand the purposes of God. There is much more to us humans , then meets the eye, and OG d has designed it that way the only by the revelation of Himself to us, we will understand and know Him. But there is a condition to receive that understanding from Him.....

So the answer to your question is :Yes, it had to be that the penalty for our sin is bloody, because that's what sin brings forth, DEATH. But HE came in the form of a man, to become like one of us, yet without sin, to pay the penalty instead of us.

Prissy, like Keith, you assume that those who disagree with you hate the Bible, hate God, and are atheists. The fact is that many of us just despise you and your ilk for being narrow-minded twits who think their interpretation of the Bible is correct and that all others are not.

Prism1234, The message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing. I can't tell whether Mccccc is serious or just trying to pick a fight. It's hard to explain why God requires a blood sacrifice for sin and that it took the sinless Son of God to pay that penalty. Most people don't even understand that they stand guilty in the eyes of God. Most people don't realize that they are condemned already. Most don't understand why they need a Savior to begin with. They think they're being offered a cure for a disease that they don't have. I would say to Mccccc, if he/she is serious, that they first have to realize they are a sinful being in God's sight and because of it, cannot be in God's presence. But also realize that God provided His Son to pay your penalty. Repent(turn from your sin) and believe that Jesus did die for your sin, but was raised from the dead on the third day, thus defeating death.

It simply proves the point I've made–that you aren't qualified to interpret scripture with any sort of authority. Scholars who've studied religion for decades disagree over the meaning of many Biblical passages, yet you arrogant dweebs think you know EXACTLY what they all mean. Yet you can't write a coherent sentence that wouldn't embarrass a senior in high school.

So, George, your omnipotent skyfairy needed to put his son up on sticks to save us from his definition of "sin" for what reason again? Couldn't do the job without more blood and gore? It's not just hard to explain; it's truly impossible, because there is no valid reason.

Your idiotic jeebus scapegoat story is just stolen from earlier supersti-tions. Get over it already. Done your Sunday goat sacrifice yet? Remember, Jeebus said the OT rules of your sicko supersti-tion still apply, so get that blood burning or Christian god will be angry with you.

You don't have any interest in anything but making yourself look like a good Christian while castigating anyone who doesn't believe every piece of nonsense you post.

The only reason Prissy, George, and Keith are posting on this story is because they're conservative voters who hate Obama. They claim to love people but they don't. "The message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing"

Yes, Keith, the truth of these words is evident even here and now , among the people of this forum.

But our Lord Jesus Christ exposed the real reason WHY is there such blindness in those who reject Him.
      He said:
"And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
For every one that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are done in God"(John ch. 3)

In these words lies THE REAL ANSWER!.

God bless and keep you, my brother!
Those who love the truth will be sustained by it, because God, who is the author of Truth, will hold them up and preserve them by His power.

Prissy, why is it you don't explain why so many scholars have different interpretations of Biblical passages and not only one? Why is it that you think yours is the "true" one and all others are false? Why is it you ignore my statement that many do not have any hatred for the Bible or God but only for intolerance and narrow-mindedness of so many so-called Christians like yourself?

Why is it you can't address this, instead of continuing to regurgitate plati tudes?

tally 13 nailed it when she said you love to spout off nonsense you can't back up with facts, Keith. I have never had nor sought an abortion. A "kid" is slang for child, dufus. Get your panties in a twist about it if you want; it's no skin off my nose. Furthermore, you might want to look at the statistics on abortion. Most of them are performed on self-professed Christian females. Explain that, why don't you?

      December 4, 2011 at 11:55 am |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

George, please explain why 70+% of abortions in the USA are had by believers? If the christian god was all powerful, shouldn't the number of abortions by believers be closer to zero? Are all those that have abortions not true christians?
George couldn't answer, Keith. Why don't you?

After all, you assume that "people like me" are having abortions-as if you know anything about me except that I trounce you soundly in every round.

What part of "neutral background" do you dipwads not grasp? Why would the president of a secular country make a speech with a religious symbol for the name of Christ above his head? What REALLY makes me guffaw is that you can bet your last dollar that had the symbol been left uncovered, the very same nitwits would be having conniptions about it. They'd be criticizing Obama for standing under a symbol of Christ's name and pretending to be a savior. Or they'd complain that he was pandering to the Christian voters.

      You're a bunch of hypocrites.

Here, Keith, I'll post the queries again so you can at least admit you have no answers for them, as that would be the honorable thing to do, instead of pompously huffing and puffing and pretending you are just too busy to do so:

Why are most abortions performed on Christian women and girls, yet you claim it's people like me who are having them?
Why are you opposed to the White House covering a religious symbols during a speech when you'd object just as strenuously if it were visible or if they symbol of any religion other than Christianity were allowed to remain?
Why do you imagine your interpretation of the Bible is the only correct one?
Why do you think you are better than I?

      December 4, 2011 at 12:12 pm |

Tom, perhaps it is you who has a problem with the English language? I stand 100% by my statement to PRISM1234. There is no "lie" there. Re-read it. Your questions are a waste of time. You may now proceed with your typical action of throwing sucker punches after I walk away. Later Tommy.

What part of this is hard for anyone to grasp, Keith? Here's what you said:We were no better than Tom when Christ saved us.

Those are your words. The only way to interpret that statement is that you "were no better" and now you are.

Deny it all you want. That's exactly what you said, and probably what you and Pris believe.

      December 4, 2011 at 12:33 pm |

And now you're going to whine that I'm throwing "sucker punches" after you "walk away." Who's forcing you to leave? Stay and answer the questions I asked you. They aren't sucker punches, you coward. You are the one who gave up and left. Not my problem, dude.

      December 4, 2011 at 12:35 pm |
    • Keith

Tommyboy, Question #1-From where did you derive your statistics and what makes you think they're accurate?
Question #2-I AM opposed to the covering up of the cross. Move the location of the speech.
Question #3- Only one interpretation can be correct, yes? And if the book is fiction, what do you care anyway?
Question #4-My statement speaks for itself. No hidden meanings there. Read the words, Tommy. It's a simple statement, but for whatever reason, you can't understand it. At the point of my salvation, I was no better than you. And I'm still not. But I am better off.

Bottom Line: Abortion in the USA is largely a believer problem. The majority of abortions would be eliminated if believer cult members merely followed their cult's rules. No changes in any laws required!

@the hypocrite Keith: here is what you posted, you lying sack: At the point of my salvation, I was no better than you. And I'm still not. But I am better off.

That is not what you stated earlier, and anyone can go back and look at your statement. You stated that you were no better than I until you were "saved". There was no mention of being better off. You are such a coward that you can't even own up to the words you yourself wrote.

      December 4, 2011 at 7:59 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

The hypocrite brays: "I AM opposed to covering up the cross". First of all, you moron, it wasn't a cross that was covered. It was the symbol for Christ's name. And you have yet to address my assertion that you'd have been having a hissy fit if it hadn't been covered because you and the rest of the holy rollers would have been accusing Obama of attempting to pretend to be Christ or some other such nonsense, as you always do.

When you are courageous enough to own up to your words and your prejudice, go right ahead. As it is, you are looking more and more like the coward you are.

      Definition of HYPOCRITE

: a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue or religion
: a person who acts in contradiction to his or her stated beliefs or feelings

Yeah, way to go, Einstein. That was really persuasive.

Do point out a post wherein I said the Bible was fiction. Thanks in advance. Also, do show any proof that any work is not subject to interpretation. Thanks in advance.

Oh, and Keith? While you're at it, do prove you're not as stupid as you appear.

      December 4, 2011 at 8:09 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

I wonder how Keith can look at himself in the mirror when he can't acknowledge that he is lying about his own words. He stated that until he was saved, he was no better than I. The implication is quite clear and there is no other possible interpretation of those words. If Keith wrote them in error, then he, as a Christian, should own up to that fact, and acknowledge his error. He instead has chosen to deny that he even made the statement, and pretends that it is I who is "lying".

If anything were illustrative of the hypocrisy of some of those who proclaim themselves Christians, it's Keith's posts and his denials.

So much hate and anger by Tom. It just drips off the monitor. And in this blessed season no less. Felix is right about you Tom. You do have a soul problem. You claim not to be an atheist, but your soul is darker than any atheist on here.

    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Oh, boo hoo, Georgie. Why is it you haven't been able to answer the questions posed to you, honey?

Here's what your pal Keith wrote: "We were no better than Tom when Christ saved us."

I'm sure you'll find some way to defend you hypocrite friend on this one, won't you? Sure you will, George, even if you are unable to honestly address what's been asked of you.

      December 4, 2011 at 8:52 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Ooooooh, I have a dark soul. Boooooooo! Boooogaboogabooga, Georgie.

      Are ya scared yet?

Really, sweetcheeks, you are so silly you make your own point look ridiculous.

If you intend to persuade others, you'd better bone up on style and wit.

The fact is that my soul is no darker than yours. It's no darker than anyone else's. I simply don't believe in your God of vengeance and hate. I don't believe in a merciless, omnipotent being who punishes his creation for being exactly as he created it.

You have nothing to prove otherwise. The Bible wasn't written by God but by fallible men. Just like you. Only literate.

      Hi, Keith...
I left the blog earlier, so I just want to say " thanks " for your encouraging words. No, I haven't been to John McTerman's blog, but will check it out. There is one that I visit, and it is by people who really know the Lord at :

I agree what you said, about praying for those who are blinded by the spirit of this world, and it's true, we all at one time were where they are now.
We all are born with this leprosy called sin, but our Lord came to heal the lepers....He healed them then, He heals them still now..... But only those are healed who receive Him....

My English is a little rusty, but it'll do. I'm little to old to tackle "deep grammar" lessons....LOL! This country is my second adapted country, and my second language other then my native... They say, after you learn first one, the second one is not as hard.... But I find English being much harder and find it to be an "unruly" language, with many odds and "unpredictables", so I just have to guess sometimes.
German is much easier, since it has practical rules to apply, so one can figure out to use them. But it's been long time since I've used it, so it's a little rusty now...

Anyway, thanks for your posts, the kind that are rare to see here, and it is refreshing to see on blogs such as this one.
God bless you and yours, my brother!

ding, ding. And Tommy comes out of his corner. Swinging those haymakers and connecting with nothing but the wind. He sure must be getting tired by now. He appears to be punch-drunk because he's so obviously dense that he cannot comprehend the simple sentence, "We were no better than Tom when Christ saved us." We were no better then, and we're no better now. But we are better off because the wrath of God does not abide on us anymore. Sheeesh Tom, what part of this don't you get? "Cut me, Mick. Cut me."

Keith said: "We were no better than Tom before."

What part of this is unclear. You are clearly stating that you are better than I am now.

Deny it all you will, Keith, but it's quite obvious what you meant.

PRISM1234, When I first came to this blog, I was shocked to see so many posters who are violenty anti-God. It makes sense when you read in Revelation about them hiding in caves and shaking their fists at God during the Great Tribulation. Some of these bloggers will become God's footstool someday. Their hatred for the Lord and His people is in-human. Demonic. It is good to see others contending for the faith as Jude speaks of. We can't back down from those who so blatantly attack our Lord. Good to make your aquaintence. My mom's side of the family is German while my dad is Romanian. Well, I've got to go for now. See you later on the blog or see you at the rapture.

      December 3, 2011 at 10:34 pm |
    • PRISM 1234

Hey, why should I back off of anything? It is my kind that occupied the world before your kind showed up! As for God..... friend, all HE has to do is lift His hand of protection from this Earth and it's inhabitants, and the most horrifying apocalyptic pictures you've ever seen would come to life before your very eyes, only looking like a childs play! You don't know how much you depend on God's mercy, you really don't!...

But do you know that majority of qualms that you have with us who speak on behalf of God, has to do with defending / promoting / justifying of se'x'ual gratifications? .... that in itself speaks of your inward motives more then you know....So it is the same with others who can not depart from harping about "g-ay" rights...

If you, and people like you, would put as much energy as you put it defending your lewd inclinations, to speak against corruption and injustice that's going on in this country, and against the opression of the people who are trying to survive in this greed infested system we've got, maybe then the fat cats who are running the show would have been taken off of their positions by now, and we would have a society where people are not being treated as trash because they get sick and have not Mafia's protection " Medical Insurance" But all you do is whine and whine, and everyone is sick of hearing you!
But no matter how hard you try, we ain't going anywhere, no not yet, no not till God sees it fit. Do you understand that?!

And finally, since you were so froward with your post directed at me, here is another one of mine from another blog, which fits you and others like you to the Tee!

"The problem with atheists and those who get on the bandwagon with them , seeing the opportunity to push their agendas by joining them, is that they want to alter and change the most basic laws by which every civilized society has existed throughout the ages, and which also sustained them.
You can not pluck out God and disconnect Him and His principles out of human affairs, because whether they are acknowledged by us or not, they have been put there by our Creator, and it is them that sustain any human society, and civilizations. When any of them depart from those laws and principles, they face ruin and spell their own doom. That's just the way it is.
This country is spiraling downwards, but all one needs to do is look at it's moral and spiritual decay, and it's no brainer why it is spiraling downward with gravity speed.
But all this comes through a thing called pride and arrogance, which this county has become intoxicated with.
I know that the truth hurts, but lies bring more pain and devastation.... It's no need to pretend to ourselves!.....
And you, people who fight against God and His principles, and want to destroy anything that's connected to honoring Him, are much more then just the loud mouths that make noise... You are the enemies to all what is good and what is decent, and what has proven to sustain human kind through the ages.
Because when you want God out of the Land because you chose to reject Him, you are setting the stage for ruin of the very thing what you claim you hold dear...Go figure!
And the way it is going, you'll see it comming to pass!"

I think the the Faithful will do such when we can all find some special interest group or cause that each American will find non offensive. No one who brings any part of their selves to public service. If a person is or were in the military then they should leave out any governance based on their experience of service so we do not offend those who refused to serve.

It you are an environmentalist the same goes for them. Heck,'remember judge Sodomayor and her a "wise Latina would bring something to the courts" comment?

The thing is that just as deep in your non faith that you believe us to be delusional we of Faith are thinking the same about you. In the end your statements of keeping part of ourselves out of government is no different then the hate filled folks that want gays and lesbians to keep that part of themselves at home in the closet.

There are two main reasons to doubt his Christianity:

    1. Support for abortion.
    2. Coddling ho.mo.s.e.x.uals instead of fighting against this filthy sin.

I do not believe, as others have said, that he is a Muslim because Islam is against those two abominations. I rather think he is an atheist because we only hear him talk about God when an election is near.

What is filthy is the way religious morons think.

Always trying to attach a label to anything they can not accept. Spreading the dogma of intolerance and hate. Bunch of flaming control freaks who think they hold the moral high ground just because they think their holy book is the defacto truth.
The silly farce that is religion will be wiped clean off our societies in time and we'll be free of this perpetual stupidity.

It's high time for religious s-c-u-m to just off themselves and go with their masochist divine being.

Ho.mo.s.e.x.uals and atheists reject any code of morality except the ones that they themselves think up. Also, they love to label conservative Christians as intolerant and haters. Typical.

It used to be that believers had a special power to detect anger in posts by non-believers. Now they, or perhaps only Felix (as an aside, is Felix actually Herbie having a bad day?), seems to be able to smell the contents of a post or the poster! Were do I get an olfactory enhanced device? Do I have to pray to a god? Or is this capability just another symptom of delusional thinking?

Anyone who says this man has been faking his religion for 30 years needs to have their head examined – they insult every Christian by calling into question this man's obvious faith, as if it's such an easy thing to "pretend" to be a Christian. How are you to know *anyone* is a Christian if you pretend to know who's true and who's not? God is the only judge you need to worry about... keep the rest of the judgements to YOURSELF.

Thank you, John. I suspected that it was an attempt to make a mountain out of a molehill, but I wanted to give Keith a chance to show that he was making a valid point.

Again, what's with christians and honesty? Do they think that misleading exaggeration is an okay kind of lie? For members of a religion that expressly forbids lying, they certainly play fast and loose with the truth.

t13, If it was the cresent of islam, you can bet it would not have been covered up. It was intentionally covered by request of the White House. As far as playing fast and loose with the truth, you have no idea what Truth is. Pilate didn't, and neither do you.

The muslims do however believe in Jesus-it's just not the Jesus of the Bible. It's Rick Warren's "Isa", I believe. Sorry. Not the same "Jesus" at all.

    • Keith

      D. Tree, t13, have you seen the election results from Egypt? 40% for the Muslim Brotherhood and 20% for some hard-line extremists that are worse than the Brotherhood. Obama must be very pleased. But don't look now as an American carrier battle group is off the coast of Syria and pay no attention to that Soviet aircraft carrier nearby. Syria's next. Then Jordan. Very soon the Psalm 83 War-then you may start believing the Truth. Maybe. When Damascus ceases from being a city overnight? Just like the Bible predicts. Maybe then? Then again, maybe not.

      December 3, 2011 at 9:20 pm |

Keith, I say you play very fast and loose with truth because you make a habit of claiming things for which you have no proof.

"If it was the cresent of islam, you can bet it would not have been covered up."

Please provide the truth that substantiates your comment. Had you bothered to look at the link John provided, you would see what a non-story that was.

" have you seen the election results from Egypt? 40% for the Muslim Brotherhood and 20% for some hard-line extremists that are worse than the Brotherhood. Obama must be very pleased."

Please provide proof that substantiates your comment. Besides, what does it matter? Egypt is a sovereign nation and it's citizens have every right to vote how they please. They fought for that right. You didn't.

We get it. For whatever reason, you hate President Obama. That is your right. But lying about him and his motives does you no credit. It just makes you look like a foolish liar.

t13, Obama fomented the Arab Spring in Egypt and Libya. The peace treaty between Egypt and Israel is all but gone. War will be next. Probably nuclear war. And you will have your superman in the White House to thank for it. Can you not see beyond the the first 6" in front of your face. Qualify the election results? Seriously? I don't have to dig up my back yard and remove the septic tank cover to tell you what's inside. But I'm sure you can go to some foreign news media outlets to obtain those results. Do you need someone to hold your hand throught the entire process? The results are no secret. Quit your whining.

      You're a bunch of hypocrites.

t13, This is a valid story. Maybe not to you, but to me it is. Did Georgetown cover the cross at the request of the White House or didn't they? They did. Is that insulting to Christians? Yes. Maybe they should have had a change in venue? No. Let's just insult the Christians, after all they're supposed to turn the other cheek, right? There's no way in hell Obama would have done this had it have been a muslim symbol and you know it. So quit accusing me of lying.

      December 4, 2011 at 7:18 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Georgetown U could have declined the request. It didn't. What part of that is a mystery to you, Keith? Georgetown is a private university. It could have declined to have Obama speak there. If you have a beef, you moron, it's with the university. Take it up with them.

Do you deny that had the president appeared under a Christian symbol that you'd have had a sh *t fit about it? After all, you're the same one b* tching about his remarks regarding the Christmas holiday as bogus.

Go ahead and explain yourself, you moronic hypocrite.

Prove your assertion, Keith. Prove that had it been a Muslim symbol, Obama would have allowed it to remain visible. Go ahead. Cite your evidence. Where has Obama ever made an appearance in this country under a Muslim symbol? I can wait you out, you liar.

What anti-Christ doesn't know what all religions call the Christmas story??? While campaigning, President Obama stated that Jesus Christ is not the only way to God. He stated that Christians should stop telling people He is the only way. Each year President Obama speaks of the Christmas "story." Jesus Christ is God, Himself. He is not a story. President Obama yearly speaks of Christ like He's only a good moral person, with good moral beliefs, not the Son of God and Savior of the World. Those who have truly made Christ their LORD and Savior are able to discern this.

    December 3, 2011 at 11:19 am |

You are right, but I give him a pass because he is everyone's president, not just Christians. He has to choose his words diplomatically so as not to deny Christ while not at the same time excluding others.

      December 3, 2011 at 1:20 pm |
    • George

But I do think that we need to elect conservative Christians that govern from the Christian (majority) perspective while choosing their words so as not to offend the others.

Let me translate: "But I do think that we need to elect conservative Christians that govern from the Christian (majority) perspective while choosing their words so as not to offend the others." = "We want to turn the USA into a theocracy but will need lie to the American public to get what we want."

      December 4, 2011 at 10:03 am |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

You hit the nail on the head, Hot. George thinks that all Christians are all just like him, and all hold the same values. They don't.
There are far more Christians who don't believe that abortion should be illegal than there are conservative ones who think otherwise. There are far more Christians who believe h o mo se xuality is not a choice and who support gay rights than there are idiots like George. There are far more Christians who believe that religion should be separate from politics and who support the rights of all people-not just Christian conservatives.

If there ever was a phony and liar in the White House - it's Obama. So he didn't mention God at Thanksgiving and people complained, so now he's the preacher-man at Christmas. Hilarious to watch this guy - absolutely NO integrity of any kind - just a cheesy politician!!

    December 3, 2011 at 9:27 am |
    • MN

Why would he be expected to mention god at Thanksgiving???? It's not even a religious holiday. And secondly, people don't have to conduct their faith the same way you might and it might play a smaller role in his life but that doesn't mean he doesn't believe. People need to get a life and mind their own business.

      December 3, 2011 at 11:34 am |
  15. Faith-Isn't-A-Preacher

Just another example of how to shame the Christians into turning the other cheek to their being shafted.
At every turn, Obama has undermined the Religious Freedom of Christians in the public space. (Even in Foreign Policy) He has even promoted other faiths and factions in public schools and the courts of public opinion; under the guise of promoting tolerance and yielding to cultural displacement.
It has been his policy to scorn any Christian as not being Christian when one objects to being taken advantage of or being pushed aside.
Turning the other cheek is to remove all doubt about the offender. All bets are off on yielding to more offense unless the offender repents; then forgiveness kicks in.

My comment is somewhat tangential to the debate over whether Obama is a Christian (I frankly find that conversation rather tired). Instead, I want to point to the disconnect between Gilgoff's teaser that Obama delivered a "very Christian message" and his citation from Obama's speech that he offers at proof. He writes,

In his remarks at Thursday's tree lighting, Obama said that Jesus "grew up to become a leader with a servant’s heart who taught us a message as simple as it is powerful: that we should love God, and love our neighbor as ourselves."

The problem with calling this undeniably Christian is that this is not a summary of Jesus' essential message. Jesus indeed pointed to the high demands of the law–e.g., loving God and neighbor–and the responsibility of all people to keep it. But this is not distinctively Christian. Indeed most all religions teach something similar. One could just as well quote Mohammed in the same vain a hundred times and it wouldn't necessarily make a person a Muslim.

Rather, what becomes manifestly clear throughout the gospels and the New Testament is that human beings are incapable of keeping that law and need God to intervene in our world in order to rescue us from sin and condemnation and put the world back to rights. That is Jesus' true message (and the message of the other NT writers)–the Gospel of the Kingdom of God–and that's what the Incarnation and Christmas are really about. BTW, saying so is not sectarian in the slightest. It is the minimum that Christians across the Great Tradition (Catholics, Orthodox, Evangelicals, and otherwise) have held to and anything that stops short of that is certainly not worthy of the description "very Christian" and possibly not even worthy of the label "Christian."

Perhaps this is one cause of much of the confusion in this discussion.

    December 3, 2011 at 4:28 am |
    • johnfrichardson

And Christianity has had two thousand years to "put the world back right" and has utterly failed. It's a false doctrine that MUST be discarded.

  17. Reality

Why "Christian?" Obama will win and why the Christian Right no longer matters in presidential elections:

Once again, all the conservative votes in the country "ain't" going to help a "pro-life" presidential candidate, i.e Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman, Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain, Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum, in 2012 as the "Immoral Majority" rules the country and will be doing so for awhile. The "Immoral Majority" you ask?

The fastest growing USA voting bloc: In 2008, the 70+ million "Roe vs. Wade mothers and fathers" of aborted womb-babies" whose ranks grow by two million per year i.e. 78+ million "IM" voters in 2012.

    2008 Presidential popular vote results:

    69,456,897 for pro-abortion/choice BO, 59,934,814 for "pro-life" JM.

And all because many women fail to take the Pill once a day or men fail to use a condom even though in most cases these men have them in their pockets. (maybe they should be called the "Stupid Majority"?)

(The failures of the widely used birth "control" methods i.e. the Pill and male condom have led to the large rate of abortions ( one million/yr) and S-TDs (19 million/yr) in the USA. Men and women must either recognize their responsibilities by using the Pill or condoms properly and/or use other safer birth control methods in order to reduce the epidemics of abortion and S-TDs.)

    December 3, 2011 at 12:29 am |
    • Lorraine

This has nothing to do with who wins the election. It has everything to do with someone sayings he's a Christian but, at the same time, deceiving others as he denies Christ to be the only way to heaven. Just like Satan, he deceives.

      December 3, 2011 at 11:25 am |
  18. Reality

Obama says abortions should be "safe, legal and rare" but says nothing about the basic tenet of proper human conduct i.e. Thou Shalt Not Kill/Murder. And where is BO's sense of indignation that abortions are not rare and that these acts of horror demean the Golden Rule considering that he says he is a Christian. And where is his sense of indignation that women who use the Pill do not use it properly resulting in an failure rate of 8.7% as per the Gu-ttmacher Inst-itute statistics. Using these and other Gu-ttmacher Insti-tute data, this failure of women to use the Pill properly results in ~1,000,000 unplanned pregnancies every year. And the annual abortion rate in the USA is?? ~1,000,000 as per the CDC.

And do males use co-ndoms properly? No, as said failure rate for this birth "control" method is 17.4%!! Again using Gu-ttmacher data, said failure rate results in another ~1,000,000 unplanned pregnancies every year.

    And from the CDC-2006

"Se-xually transmitted diseases (S-TDs) remain a major public health challenge in the United States. While substantial progress has been made in preventing, diagnosing, and treating certain S-TDs in recent years, CDC estimates that approximately 19 million new infections occur each year, almost half of them among young people ages 15 to 24.1 In addition to the physical and psychological consequences of S-TDs, these diseases also exact a tremendous economic toll. Direct medical costs as-sociated with S-TDs in the United States are estimated at up to $14.7 billion annually in 2006 dollars."

    More problems:

"Yes, or-al se-x is se-x, and it can boost cancer risk-

Here's a crucial message for teens: Or-al s-ex carries many of the same risks as va-ginal s-ex, including human papilloma virus, or HPV. And HPV may now be overtaking tobacco as the leading cause of o-ral cancers in America in people under age 50.

"Adolescents don’t think or-al s-ex is something to worry about," said Bonnie Halpern-Felsher professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. "They view it as a way to have intimacy without having 's-ex.'"

Bottom line: BO is still not aware of the basics of birth control, STD prevention and still remains the leader of the Immoral Majority and will remain so until he becomes a true Christian and one who respects and PROTECTS HUMAN LIFE IN ALL ITS FORMS and who at least emphasizes the proper use of birth control and STD prevention methods!!!

Christmas is strictly a pagan celebration and Barack Obama is not a Christian and a follower of Christ but rather a follower of a false Christ (Matthew 24:24; 2 Cor. 11:13-15).

He is a natural man, who receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, for they are spiritually discerned (1 Cor. 2:14).

For a better understanding what spirit Barack Obama serves and what spirit he is of (Luke 9:55), we invite you to read the articles ‘Can Christianity or Any Other Religion Save You? and ‘Barack Obama ~ President of the United States of America’, listed on our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca

The following are two excerpts from the article ‘Barack Obama ~ President of the United States of America’.

“The following are some of the words Ezekiel used: "For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through. Then shall they know that I am the Lord, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed. And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come) then shall they know that a prophet has been among them." (Ezekiel 33:28,29,33)”

“Let me explain that your attempts are a futile exercise, and merely a band-aid approach that in due course will severely weaken the world economy even further. Money cannot solve the issues you will be facing during your presidency.
During the election campaign, people had high hopes that you would be able to solve the many issues you face, but people will learn that their hopes will in due course turn into despair.
On the day of your inauguration, you had the highest approval rating of any incoming president, but as the economy is going to worsen, people will soon forget the celebrations and the day of your inauguration.
When people continue to lose jobs and see their assets and investments devalue and diminish, they soon run out of patience.”

Also, to give people a better understanding of the destructive forces (Eph. 6:12) behind CNN, Fox, US Politics and the issues that divide this world, we invite you to read the articles ‘CNN Belief Blog ~ Sign of the Times’ and ‘Influence of the Media’.

All of the other pages and articles listed on our website explain how this whole world has been deceived as confirmed by the Word of God in Revelation 12:9.

Seek, and ye shall find (Matthew 7:7).

    Atheisteve had bragged:

"33% (1/3) people in the world are Christians"

"So that means 2/3 of the people in the world think they're WRONG. So if we're playing majority numbers are winners then all Christians LOSE."

Sorry Fred but our topic here is Obama and America NOT the world. And NOBODY claims that this is a Christian World.

On the other hand the American Religious Identification Survey says and I quote,

"75% of Americans call themselves Christian"

Hence, 3/4 of Americans agree that,......AMERICA is a CHRISTIAN NATION!

One of the central principles that this country was founded on that distinguishes it in a positive way from a lot that went before is that of respecting the rights of the minority. You'll be glad for that as Christianity continues its inexorable slide towards minority status. In the meantime, respect the rights of others. This is not a "Christian nation". It's a nation that upholds the right of religious freedom.

Can we box it up and ship it to you please? (no air holes needed...its god will save it from suffocating or not 🙂 )
It is rather sad when you see your fellow citizens a.ssume that the USA is a christard nation. Quite apprently they do not know much about the country or of its founding fathers. I believe they fear the truth and so to fit in their small worlds they hold on to their belief...personally I think we need to pull the plugs on their power and give them back their caves. They tend to forget that if it wasn't for atheists and deists they would not have the internet or a computer. Then again they think some sky freak-monster guided those hands. What a waste of the only life they are guaranteed of. They fail to see that the stats in regards to the number of believers vs non-believers are changing. Non-believers are coming up in the ranks (thanks social media and the internet). Soon we will match them in numbers (I think we have already but the fear factor of leaving their hole is there).

Yeah, telepathy... there's a REAL science, ranks right up there with astrology, phrenology, and tarot. If this were a X-tard nation, don't you think our Consti'tution would have specified something along those lines in the first place? Even the oath of Presidential office does NOT include the words" so help me 'god'" (Article 3). It is said that Teddy Roosevelt, upon being sworn in, ended the oath with the words "and thus I swear" instead of that common phrase.
