Eddie Long to take time off after divorce filing

By the CNN Wire Staff

Atlanta (CNN) - Bishop Eddie Long, head of one of the nation's largest mega churches, announced Sunday he will take "time off" from the pulpit to work on his family.

The announcement came three days after his wife Vanessa filed for divorce.

Although her husband's church issued a statement Friday, attributed to Vanessa Long, saying she was withdrawing the divorce petition, her attorney said she was proceeding with it.

Well, none of us are w/o sin, including old Jesus, as he himself implicitly admitted by not casting the first stone himself. But how about a compromise: Those who have never se-xually abused underaged kids can start casting stones? Sound reasonable?

The only motivation Mormon missionaries can have is love. Why else would they get up at 6:00 in the morning to talk to people who are unkind and insensitive? They receive no compensation and I am sure you can appreciate the difference here between them and paid ministers like Eddie Long. In fact, many of them sell their cars or use their college funds to go on a mission. They give up girl friends, family, promising sports and entertainment careers, all to preach the gospel of love to people they don't even know. In fact, there are no paid clergy at all in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Full time general authorities can receive a small stipend if they have no other means of support, but most are self-made and don't need it. Bishops do not even charge to do weddings or anything. Christ's teachings and priesthood service was never intended by the Savior to be sold for money. Our motivation should be to save souls and nothing more. These are the hall marks of the true church. "By their fruits, ye shall know them."

"Why else would they get up at 6:00 in the morning to talk to people who are unkind and insensitive?"

Perhaps to curry favor with what they perceive to be god

    • rick

Isn't the whole basis behind evangelism that the evangelist knows about god better than the person to whom they are preaching? If that is not the height of arrogance, it has to be close

Right again, Rick, and how very perceptive. I know there is a God because I took James' challenge, "5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed."

If you do not know there is a God, you are either too lazy to find out, or you love your sins more than you do God – one of the two.

What master? I don't see anyone. When's the last time you actually had a conversation with your "god"? NEVER!

"If you do not know there is a God, you are either too lazy to find out, or you love your sins more than you do God – one of the two."

You seem to have an issue of confusing faith and knowledge. Perhaps you are too lazy to investigate.

We had Mormons in the other night. What a nice couple of young men...very open minded. If that is the way most of the members of your organization are, kudos. They admitted that they were not going to change my mind in my disbelief but they were still willing to take time and be rational...setting aside the differences.

      December 5, 2011 at 4:55 am |
    • Mirosal

@ Truth ... I'm glad you had a rational talk with them. When they came to MY door, I told them I was an Atheist. They then proceeded the practically throw a Book of Mormon at me, along with Pearl of Great Price, told me I HAD TO visit their website to see the errors of my ways. I was all but condemned in their eyes, as they really did tell me that 'god' was going to punish me for not believing. I'm glad you had a couple of rational polite young men at your door.

Sorry you had a bad experience, Mirosol, but IF we really do have the truth and IF your soul really is in danger, I am sure you can appreciate the urgency of the situation. If we reject the truth here, our spirit will still be the same in the next world. Yes, there will still be Baptists, and Catholics, etc there and we will believe the same and we will keep on rejecting the truth. People who reject the truth have a blindness and even though the truth is in front of them, they will reject it out of pride – they refuse to admit they are wrong, and this will go on for all eternity. The time to repent is now. No unclean thing can enter the kingdom of God, because everything is spotless and beautiful and perfect there. But, God will force no person to heaven. We have our free agency. We urge you to use it wisely.

Yes, Rick. I am glad you appreciate the gravity of it. This is the most important question you will ever consider. This life is about making choices and this choice will bring you everlasting happiness or sadness.

"WE ARE LIVING IN THE LAST AND EVIL DAYS."

No we are not, 2010 was one of the safest years! Plus maybe 15% of people can be classified as being bad that leaves 85% that are decent hard working people. You are watching too much negative news, get off your lazy ass a nd get out in your community to find out the truth. Wow what a moron.

I'm not judging this preacher, but how much can a wife take, no man is perfect but he is suppose to be setting an example to the highest degree, I pray for his poor wife that's had to endure all the ugliness, I feel her pain, been there before! Well I just hope that he realizes he has damaged his family and his congregation is looking at him and wondering, Who are you? Sometimes we don't know what we have until it's gone. Pray for them, this will not be easy to go through.
