Should nuns be on the pill?

By Elizabeth Landau, CNN

(CNN) – Catholic nuns take a vow of chastity, so you might not think that any sister would need to be on birth control.

But oral contraceptive pills have other uses besides preventing pregnancy; in fact, Catholic bioethicists say there is no inherent conflict in nuns (or any other Catholic) taking these very same substances for prescribed, therapeutic reasons, such as for treating heavy menstrual bleeding or endometriosis.

A new article in the journal The Lancet goes one step further. It argues that nuns "should be free to use the contraceptive pill to protect against the hazards of nulliparity” – that is, heightened cancer risk among women who do not bear children.

According to the authors, Australian researchers Kara Britt and Roger Short, there are about 95,000 nuns in the world, and they are paying "a terrible price for their chastity": increased risks of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer.

Apr. 24, 2013 — Scientists have long believed that lava erupted from certain oceanic volcanoes contains materials from the early Earth's crust. New research from a team including Carnegie's Erik Hauri demonstrates that oceanic volcanic rocks contain samples of recycled crust dating back to the Archean era 2.5 billion years ago. Their work is published in Nature.

Einstein letter, set for auction, shows scientist challenging idea of God, being 'chosen'

    By Jessica Ravitz, CNN

Decades before atheist scientist and author Richard Dawkins called God a "delusion," one world-renowned physicist – Albert Einstein – was weighing in on faith matters with his own strong words.

“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still primitive legends,” Einstein wrote in German in a 1954 letter that will be auctioned on eBay later this month. "No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

So long as it's for a medical reason, there's no legitimate theological reason to block nuns from taking the pill. They (like all unmarrieds) aren't supposed to be making whoopee anyway.

Did you say disrespect ? I have every respect to those angels and consider bringing such subject up as disrespect for what those do to our world with their kindness... Those nuns and popes were once my teachers in the kindergarden in Aden Colony of Southern Arabia although I was considered as Muslim from Muslim parents...so you can say I hold for them great respect although we are from different religions beliefs...!

I'm not sure why you don't understand the article. The point was that for Catholics, there is nothing wrong with taking birth control if it is for medical reasons. It has nothing to do with nuns having intercourse. It stems from the misconception that Catholics are forbidden across the board from taking or using any sort of contraception. The only prohibition for Catholics concerns using contraceptives to purposely prevent pregnancy. Using birth control for other medical reasons is completely permissible.

So it is something unchaste for a woman to have a husband and bear children? What a level of insanity and madness...

Celebacy is NOT anti-marriage, it is to give up self and offer your life in the willing service of God and other people. Thattakes the form of prayer; teaching; nursing etc. Stop twisting facts for your own ends and look it up.
I thought most civilized countries allowed people to make their own decisions?????? Apparently not! Hypocrites.
