The Obamas walk to church, reverend preaches understanding expectations

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – On a cold, brisk day in Washington, DC, the president and his family walked across Lafayette Park to attended services at St. John’s Episcopal Church.

According to a pool report, Reverend Luis Leon’s sermon was about John the Baptist heralding Jesus as the real god. Leon went on to discuss how John the Baptist’s heralding did not first go as expected but that it was a good thing because it taught people to accept reality.

Rev. Leon also mentioned the president in his sermon. Playing off John the Baptist, the reverend discussed the expectations people had of Obama at first. Many people, he said, unfairly expected a messiah to cure all America’s problems, but that now it is becoming apparent it’s not that easy.

"This is not a political diatribe by the way,” Rev. Leon said. “It's simply stating the obvious.”

Just after noon, the first family took communion with other worshipers and then walked back to the White House.

Presidents have become regulars at St. John’s Episcopal Church. Founded in 1815, every president since James Madison has attended a service there.

  1. MAJORITY always WINS

Whether Obama is a Christian or just pretending to be one just to win, either way or both only proves one thing, MY NAME.

    1 Timothy 2
    I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
    For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
    For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives r@ped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children. (Isaiah 13:15-18 NLT)

Well look at this turd in the punch bowl. Completely incapable of understanding what exaggeration means. I know you've taken deep offense to my exaggeration of the physical health of your best friends, the white house occupiers, but I'm not going to apologize for it. By the way, your Microcephaly insult was a stupid stretch that didn't make any sense. You might as well have said that anyone who reads my posts is familiar with someone who suffers from cancer. In order to properly insult me, you should have been more direct in stating your belief that I suffer from Microcephaly. This would have been a proper insult in that it would actually have something to do with me. However, based on the moronic assumption earlier that I live in Alabama we can safely say that I am in no danger of living up to your medical diagnosis. Please tell me you don't actually think you're going somewhere with your weak internet attacks.

You suck harder than a collapsed star.

  6. Christian Too....

I'm a staunch Republican, but I'm a Christian first. I don't see how anyone can be partisan about a man leading his family to church. I might disagree with the President's policies, but I applaud him on being a good father and husband and don't doubt that he is a Christian. The bible tell us that we are to pray for our leaders. At my church we prayed for President Bush and we now pray for President Obama. God Bless him

After decades of negative black male stereotypes the image displayed in this article is mostly the only reason that I am glad he was elected. I could not vote for him but I did not vote for McCain.

Goodness, I have dropped a few pounds recently but I look at that picture .... in almost every family there is at least one fat member. Maybe one of the parents or even one of the kids that enjoys an occasional hamburger or four.

They look to be of normal weight. Maybe where you come from, obesity is the norm.

      December 12, 2011 at 6:35 pm |
    • Mark from Middle River

Wow no swearing ... medication is bringing you back down to a stable level. I am proud of yah dude. It is not the thing of Obesity but that they just do not look healthy. I am not of healthy weight because i am a bit overweight, where as these folks look drastically underweight.

Also the close hair cut of Barach just doesn't help as he is graying fast, crazy fast. I would dare to say that he reminds me of some of the ones around my place of employment but that would be going too far. Its like G.W. and Bill. Its like they age fast these days in that house.

Maybe you'll lose weight "tomorrow", Porky.

      December 12, 2011 at 10:07 pm |
    • Marks from Middle River

Well since I did say I was a bit overweight then you can go ahead with the 60's Porky insult. It's all good, compared to ten years ago I have struggled and went from 250+ to 203.

See I have lost the weight and feel like a more healthy person. Unfortunately for you it's probably going to require shock treatment and a entire host of anti psychotic medication to bring you into normal. I see you are doing better tonight though. Maybe increase your dosage to two pill by mouth four times a day. That will get you through dinner until bed time with your negative mood swings. 🙂

      December 12, 2011 at 11:42 pm |

Shock treatment doesn't work on canadians. Therapy requires a brain in order to work.

You think there is a proper way to drink and eat? Yet even your religion does not show you how to do these things.

    • So what is going on here?

Sounding a bit cynical, are we?
What about all the Republican candidates who are strutting their religions in front of the right-wingers?
So the Prez want's to do a photo op. It's probably nothing more than a fashion show to show off the ladies dresses while also showing he can strut his own religion whenever needed.
I think this is just showing the "conservatives" that he goes to church too and it shouldn't be an issue anyway despite all the posturing and pandering.

    Only for the "newbies":

Hmmm, the infidelity, cheating, lying and theological flaws of Newtown Leroy Gingrich vs. the theological flaws, wishy-wash -on- life of Romney vs. the theological flaws, "vote-mongering", pro-choice/abortion of Obama??

    STOP AND READ CAREFULLY !!!

Romney believes that the horn-blowing angel Moroni appeared to the con artist Joe Smith. Not good for someone who wants to be president of any group !!! Obama "mouths" that he is Christian i.e. believes in gay Gabriel and warmongering Michael the Archangel and Satan (Ditto for N. Leroy Gingrich). BO's support of abortion however vitiates has Christianity as he is the leader of the Immoral Majority who are now the largest voting block in the country. Immoral Majority you ask??

The 78 million voting "mothers and fathers" of aborted womb babies !!! (2012 -1973 Rowe vs. Wade = 39........ 39 x 2 million/yr = 78 million. Abortion rate in the USA as per the CDC is one million/yr.

And the presidential popular vote in 2008? 69,456,897 for pro-abortion/choice BO, 59,934,814 for "pro-life" JM. The population of the Immoral Majority in 2008? ~ 70 million !!!!!!

      Muneef, Muneef, Muneef, Muneef,

You need to be updated on the upcoming holy/holidays so that you might be able to converse wisely with your Christian, Jewish and Afro-American friends.

      To wit:

Christmas, the embellished story of the birth of a simple, preacher man named Jesus.

As per most contemporary NT exegetes, his parents were Mary and Joseph although some say Jesus was a mamzer, the result of a pre-marital relationship between Mary and a Roman soldier.

      http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/

Jesus was not born in Bethlehem at least the one we are familiar with and there were no pretty wingie thingies singing from on high, no slaughter of the innocents by Herod, no visiting wise men and no escape to Egypt.

Conclusion: the holyday of Christmas is historically a non-event. Ditto for the Feast of the Magi and the solemnity of Mary aka New Years day.

      Kwanza
"Kwanzaa, which will be celebrated for the 44th time in 2009, was established by Dr. Maulana Karenga. The seven-day festival (December 26 – January 1) is secular, not religious, and aims to strengthen African cultural ident-ity and community values while providing a spiritual alternative to the commercialism of Christmas."

      Chanukah (Hanukkah)

"Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is one of the most joyous times of the Jewish year. The reason for the celebration is twofold (both dating back to c. 165 BCE): the miraculous military victory of the small, ill-equipped Jewish army over the ruling Greek Syrians, who had banned the Jewish religion and desecrated the Temple; and the miracle of the small cruse of consecrated oil, which burned for eight days in the Temple's menorah instead of just one."

"Originally a minor holiday, it has become more lavishly celebrated as a result of its proximity to Christmas."
Some candles burn for weeks so the menorah "miracle" is hardly miraculous.
Rabbi Wolpe can probably give us his take on the historical validity of Hanukkah.

So after thorough analyses of the NT Christmas passages, what are a few of the conclusions of some of the top contemporary NT scholars?

Matt 1:18-25: From Professor Gerd Ludemann in his book, Jesus After 2000 Years, pp. 123-124, "The fathering of Jesus from the Holy Spirit and his birth from the virgin Mary are unhistorical". Ludemann gives a very detailed analysis to support his conclusions. One part being the lack of attestations to these events and the late time strata of said story.

"Lüdemann [Jesus], (pp. 261-63) discounts Luke's account as a legend deriving from Jewish Hellenistic circles that were concerned to hold together the procreation of the Spirit, the authentic sonship of the Messiah and the virginal conception. "

Then there are these additional conclusions:

      Bruce Chilton

"In [Rabbi Jesus: An Intimate Biography] (2000), Chilton develops the idea of Jesus as a mamzer; someone whose irregular birth circu-mstances result in their exclusion from full participation in the life of the community. He argues for the natural pa-ternity of Joseph and finds no need for a miraculous conception. In his subsequent reconstruction of Jesus' life, Chilton suggests that this sustained personal experience of exclusion played a major role in Jesus' self-ident-ity, his concept of God and his spiritual quest.

      John Dominic Crossan

"In [Historical Jesus] (p. 371) Crossan treats this cluster, like 007 Of Davids Lineage, as an example of the interplay of prophecy and history in the development of the Jesus traditions.

"In [Birth of Christianity] (pp. 26-29) Crossan uses Luke's account of Jesus' conception and birth to explore ethical issues concerning the public interpretation of the past. He notes the tendency of Christian scholars to disregard "pagan" birth legends while investing great effort in the defence of biblical birth narratives. He concludes:

I do not accept the divine conception of either Jesus or Augustus as factual history, but I believe that God is incarnate in the Jewish peasant poverty of Jesus and not in the Roman imperial power of Augustus. "

"The following ancient parallels to Jesus' miraculous conception should be noted:
      Birth of Moses (Exod 2:1-10)
Birth of Plato (Diogenes Laertius, Lives of Eminent Philosophers, 3.45) [see Acts of Jesus, p. 507]
Birth of Alexander the Great (Plutarch, Parallel Lives, 2.1-3.5) [see Acts of Jesus, p. 502f]
Birth of Apollonius (Philostratus, Life of Apollonius, I.4) [see Acts of Jesus, p. 505]"

And some final words from Thomas Jefferson, not a contemporary NT scholar, but indeed a very learned man:

      "And the day will come,
when the mystical generation of Jesus,
by the Supreme Being as His Father,
in the womb of a virgin,
will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva
      in the brain of Jupiter.

      - Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)
Letter to John Adams, from Monticello, April 11, 1823.

      Dear Reality.

People with out those things which you believe not in will become like machines,(robots) nothing to look for or celebrate or believe in...you will deprive them from the sp-ice of life...life will become as a dish of food with out any salt,sp-ice,seasonings...! Such thought will only be beneficial to those who want to enslave people depriving them from their holidays and celebrations where live will be work and work only...and GOD knows if they will still allow us the weekends..!..

@CA: I just keep hitting the 'report abuse' link here....that's how it has been reported to loser...we can hope they delete your hate filled posts. See, you haven't won...I'm still here and I'm not going away from this blog any time soon...there are rational minded people like Mirosal; Tom-Tom; Colin and Reality that I converse with...you're type of ignorance is not required.

@CA .. I'm still here as well. Unlike you, I actually had the balls to put on a uniform and serve my country. I actually earned my rank. So go play on your GameBoy unless mommy took it away from you for failng 5th grade ... again, or just go play with yourself (that would be a very quick game) and leave the intelligent political topics to the grown-ups, ok?

I suggest that you do *not* report CA for abuse as getting into an "abuse war" would not be to anyone's benefit.

I think it is much better that CA's posts remain, with polite opposition and correction, so that all can see what sort of person he is. Who knows, perhaps his fellow Americans and believers will set him straight.

The most disappointing thing about CA is that once he has blustered on about how great the USA is and displayed his hatred of Canadians, he really has nothing to offer to a discussion. I keep hoping to read something of substance by CA, but he just never delivers.

    • Answer

That captain america is nothing to us Canadians. His hate isn't even worthwhile in whoever he tells it to.

We Canadians consider where our country came from and we fully appreciate our differences to the US. Canadians readily acknowledge that our break away to independence from the British was a negotiated independence. We saw no need for war where peace can be obtained even though it took a few more years than the US who fought. We Canadians do not need American's to defend ourselves. Even if Canada fully disarms our whole nation the US will still not be able to over-run our beautiful nation because we are the highlight of peace. Other nations who see our light will gather in condemnation to all who invade us.

Canada is fully aware that our past ties with the monarchy is like a tie to a parent. We learn from the parent to reject stupid religious beliefs. We reject oppression and are always for the side of the weak – we always help those in need.

The few trash haters who belong to those supremacist groups can yell til they turn blue in the face and the only effect on Canadians is to make our light shine brighter. That is what Canada is. I love being a Canadian.

I believe that the president and his wife and beautiful family have been handed down and carried on some of their original Irish Roman Catholic values. They are very spiritual and caring. There has not been anyone this caring in the white house since John F Kennedy. Problem with the narcissistic blowhard republicans is that they have no heart and don't care that people are dying from hunger here in the US as well as everywhere else. Lets pray that the Obamas will be blessed with the spirit of God this Christmas season and for the heavy road ahead. The Clintons are also good loving people who work so hard the republican lazy baaas would never keep up because they do not care. So, as a newcommer to American, be kind and loving to each other, that is the Christmas way, dont let politics get in the way of Jesus and Joseph and Mary, that perfect little family with nothing. God bless you Mr Obama, Michelle and your two lovely little girls. I am proud to be an american in your time. Anyone else really puts fear in my heart. Thank you and love each other to bits. Unfortunately too many people will read this and say the president is not a true christian, totally forgetting that 'judge not, lest ye be judged' exists in their book.
They will also forget that it was him who avoided a second Great Depression, bailing out the auto industry and passing a signature health care law even while acknowledging that the public is hardly satisfied with the direction of the country. They will forget that he walked in to a country that was already in a mess; had a hand in ensuring that one of the countries biggest threats was dealt with accordingly; helped ensured that an American citizen paid accordingly for his act of treason. They don't care about the good he has done, they only care that he has a muslim father and that he is not Caucasian. Sadly enough all the people who call themselves good christians will condemn this man forever while forgetting that they too need to look in a mirror. He will not catch a break from the haters and bigots and racists of the country until he caves. I just hope they clue in before it is too late...as it stands now he is ahead in the poles and much for the benefit of the country-not one other person running for the position is as capable.

Steve: no gutter involved-unless you're not planning on working this morning 🙂 The reality is that it is far too early to be up but you're worth getting up for. 🙂

Mirosal: Good morning our dear friend...shhhhhh, don't mention Trump, you'll have all the christards jumping for joy. All they care about is having someone in there who will follow the buybull to the letter and make sure oppression returns once and for all to the country-they'll vote to ban gays/lesbians from the country or at least ensure they go to jail for the crime they are not committing; they'll do their best (says very little for them) to ensure women no longer vote and are stuck home barefoot and preggers; they'll have actual science removed from the schools and will insist creation theories be taught...they won't have the foresight enough to see that using their book of delusions is damaging to their country. They'll continue to blame all the bad on the non-believers and attempt to pass blasphemy laws. They'll set the country back 100 years-better locate their horse & buggy now and disconnect their power.
This is where I'm thankful I don't reside within your country.

You never really heard much about Obama even going to church while in office until that little salamander.. I mean Newt, was being courted by the 'evangelicals'. Now Obama is out and about saying "Looky here I'm a Christian too." I think it was all for show.

    December 12, 2011 at 3:25 am |
    • AtheistSteve

Of course it's all for show. Obama has to look like he is one of them(Christian right) and is on higher moral ground due to strong family values.
But this line in the article just kills me. "Leon went on to discuss how John the Baptist’s heralding did not first go as expected but that it was a good thing because it taught people to accept reality."
Reality??? So i guess delusion is how we should view the world. How can these people say this garbage with a straight face?

      December 12, 2011 at 4:19 am |
    • Mirosal

And good morning to you Mr. Steve, and to your better half!! If we are to view the world with delusion, then billions of people have better than 20/20 vision!! Obama is just playing the game like any other politico. He was a better pick than McCain 3 years ago, but I'm still not impressed.

      December 12, 2011 at 4:27 am |
    • AtheistSteve

Obama wasted his first 2 years when he had the power to act definitively. After the mid terms he has been stonewalled at every turn. He tried to play fair and the Republicans wont have any of it...before, now or in the future. Only if he can again have a majority will he have a chance rise above the partisan fog and fix things.

      December 12, 2011 at 4:36 am |
    • Mirosal

You might have a valid point there. I think a LOT of people are sick and tired of the Republican ranting and raving. I also think that people are starting to see that Obama's legislative ideas are being blocked simply due to party lines. Nothing more nothing less. Juat an "in your face" way for them to say "just because". No rhyme or reason. The exact same way a thumper will tell you to believe "just because".

      December 12, 2011 at 4:48 am |
    • RuleOfLawOrAnarchy

I am still waiting for President Obama to do the difficult but correct thing: -to put an end to corruption in Congress and in every level of government. Especially in law enforcement. We don't need thugs enforcing our laws. We need professionals who know how to act ethically. That goes for everybody, including the President. We still have a religious lobbying office in the White House put there some time ago in direct violation of the C o n s t i t u t i o n who everybody took an oath to defend and protect.

Answer: Reflect back and remember when the President was running for office and the press ripped his preacher apart. I suppose this didn't happen either in the non-believer's life? Anyway, the first family knows that it's a life time to learn, comprehend and abide in Jesus' truth. I'm sure you'll remind us again why you prefer to stay spiritually dead.

      @heavensent

Well first of all this Leon guy isn't the same preacher as the one Obama took counsel from before he was elected. Thus I fail to see the relevance of your comment. Preachers of all flavors and religions deserve to have their views ripped apart. They are nothing more than con men spreading lies. Just as you do every time you post. As for being spiritually dead, I have no idea what that means. Spirituality is just another one of those buzz words of ignorance. Spirits don't exist. Neither does God, Satan, sin or anything else in your completely man-made theistic concept of the world. It's all a big BoogeyMan story to instill fear into the minds of gullible fools. Even Jesus if he existed at all was little more than an ancient version of Pat Robertson and thus a charlatan and a liar. There is no "truth" to the words attributed to him. Quite the opposite in fact. The easiest of proofs of what I say is this: Christians say that God sacrificed his one and only son to pay for the sins of mankind. Yet every Christian I know says that Jesus still lives. So what exactly did God sacrifice? He certainly did not lose his son. Jesus is at Gods side as we speak if what you say is true. God lost nothing. Jesus had a bad weekend...big deal. People throughout history have suffered far worse and still do. But I am wasting my time explaining any of this to you. Your indoctrination is complete and you will continue to dedicate your life to the pursuit of a fiction despite all evidence to the contrary. You value nothing in this life that doesn't fulfill your desire escape death and become immortal...just like a god. Your arrogance has no limits. I pity your wasted experience of the one and only life that you will ever have. How sad that you placed so much of your trust in the belief that an afterlife awaits. You poor deluded fool. And if I'm wrong(which is extremely unlikely) then at least I'll be comforted to know I'll be surrounded by like minded people and forever separated from sanctimonious, pompous, self-righteous, bigoted idiots like you. I'll give your God a dual middle finger for being such a total a.sshole. The Heaven you so fervently wish to end up in is apparently completely populated by ignoram.uses and thus is the picture of Hell to me. You can have it.(Of course it's still all in your imagination)

Enjoy your oblivion. Too bad you won't be aware of anything when you die. I'd love to see the shocked expression of your face when you realized your entire life was for naught.

Beware! For you have wasted your life and dragged the burden of baseless guilt with you for no good reason!"

Answer: Sinless, you are clueless to His truth. Time to open the Bible and read, comprehend, and apply His spiritual truth to your life or you forever will be a walking, talking, spiritually dead zombie as you post exposes.

P.S. I have no guilt because I live a righteous life utilizing the wisdom He teaches. You however, can stay your miserable self if you don't care to come into His light. Free will and you aren't batting a 1000.
