Christian publisher pulls 'Cancer Awareness Bible' over abortion concerns

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story erroneously stated that Lifeway Christian Bookstores carried the “Cancer Awareness Bible.” The chain never carried that Bible.

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) - A Christian publisher is withdrawing copies of the "Breast Cancer Awareness Bible," from stores because the Bible helped raised money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which contributes to Planned Parenthood.

Many conservative Christian groups oppose Planned Parenthood because of its role as an abortion provider, though many of the group's services are not abortion-related.

The "Breast Cancer Awareness Bible" is described "as a way to place God's Word into the hands of those suffering through breast cancer." It was published by B&H Publishing Group - a division of LifeWay Christian Resources, which is owned by the Southern Baptist Convention - and was sold with the stipulation that $1 from the sale of each book would go to the Komen Foundation to support breast health education, screening and treatment programs.

LifeWay Christian Resources also owns LifeWay Christian Bookstores, but the stores never carried the "Cancer Awareness Bible." The book had been distributed to Walmart, K-Mart and other retailers, according to LifeWay Christian Resources.

The Komen Foundation says on its website it gives money to Planned Parenthood, stating that funds from the foundation go to "Planned Parenthood-sponsored breast cancer health programs."

When LifeWay realized it had partnered with an organization that donates to Planned Parenthood, the publisher released a statement saying that it had "made a mistake."

"When our leadership discovered the overwhelming concern that some of Komen's affiliates were giving funds to Planned Parenthood, we began the arduous process of withdrawing this Bible from the market," said Thom S. Rainer, president and CEO of LifeWay, in a release.

"Though we have assurances that Komen's funds are used only for breast-cancer screening and awareness, it is not in keeping with LifeWay's core values to have even an indirect relationship with Planned Parenthood," he said.

This is not the first time the Komen Foundation has been questioned about its connection with Planned Parenthood.

The foundation issued a June 2011 statement that further clarified its association with "19 Planned Parenthood programs."

"In all cases, Komen funding is used exclusively to provide breast cancer programs, including clinical breast exams conducted by trained medical personnel," stated the release. "It's important to note that Komen will only make grants to non-profit organizations. As many mammography providers are for-profit entities, we are only to fund mammography services through grants made to local non-profit service providers."

As long as there are vulnerable communities in need, said the release, "Komen will fund the facilities that can best meet those needs."

The Komen Foundation issued a statement Thursday afternoon contending that there were "no dollars going to Planned Parenthood programs" from sales of the Bibles.

"LifeWay is a first-year partner that pledged $25,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure from sales of the pink-covered 'Here's Hope Breast Cancer Awareness Bible.' LifeWay and Komen for the Cure entered the partnership with the mutual hope that this Bible would have special meaning for women and their families during breast cancer treatment and recovery," the foundation said in its statement.

"We are sorry to hear that LifeWay has decided to end sales of the Bible, especially since proceeds from partnership were to support national breast cancer programs."

I don't wish religious people to be 'aborted'. I just want them to have a coke and a smile and STFU and get along for once in an age...but abortion would probably be more practical/feasible.

Well, if a doctor is going to check your prostate, he has to put a finger in your devil hole. That is how satan makes you gay. No cancer screening for men, so Planned Parenthood can't make you gay!!!!

Yeah. It's REALLY evil to provide low-cost contraception, pap smears, and information to women. Goodness knows, God wouldn't want women to be healthy.

And they also provide teaching for pedophilia. They had some people who video recorded this recently. They also push women into getting abortions. Do your research before you start proving you have no argument by calling names.

      Hey @Nebula

I left the "Church of Christ" where I lived because they were pushing the idea that people who were black were descended from Cain and that is why they were black. I lost touch with my Mother and my Father over that.

Here is the dealio: It is far easier to hate, discriminate, harm, or belittle than to lift someone up, try to understand them, be tolerant, or help in the face of difficulty or adversity. I don't believe in God...but from what I hear about him/her, or w/e...which path do you think is the right one? You decide for yourself. As I said I am an unbeliever so I choose my OWN path.

Suck it, Nebula. PP provides much-needed health services to women who can't afford them otherwise. You are so full of sh8te your eyes are brown. There's no pedophilia being peddled by PP, you dumb azz.

@Prometheus ugh "Church of Christ". "The Boston Church of Christ" by any chance? Sounds it from what you said happened. Even believers choose their own path. Whether they choose to follow another man / "religion" / teaching or to follow Jesus. With a living language it is extremely easy to mislabel things as something a person thinks it should be without understanding the definitions of words. Its called manipulation. It is harder to manipulate a dead language as the definitions are set. I am someone that has studied to some degree or another most all religions of the modern day and even some of the older ones.

@Tom Tom – you still have nothing.

    • TruthPrevails

Nebula is all about promoting bringing unwanted children in to this world. Not to mention the fact that without PP and their liberal way of thinking about abortion, far more women are put at risk...I don't think Nebula has ever heard of backyard abortions-things that potentially kill the woman but then again in Nebula's pet.ite brain that doesn't matter, as long as zygotes get the chance to come in to this world to starve to death anyways. Nebula has probably never taken the time to research all the good PP does...the word abortion scares it off. Maybe if Nebula read Greg Paul's article Holocaust of the Children, it would understand how it own god has caused numerous abortions.

For shame. You are NOT a Christian company when you make it more difficult for women to get cancer information and mammograms. Your reasons for pulling your "Bible" has nothing to do with Christianity and more to do with politics. This IS AMERICA, not a middle Eastern country afraid of religious extremists. You are catering to a very loud minority, but a minority nonetheless. Please rescind your decision. "Whatsoever you do for the least of these, you do also for me". Selling your book will ultimately save lives. How can this be wrong?

The "least of these" you mention are the millions of innocent victims of Planned Parenthood, to which the Komen Foundation contributes. The Bible sellers made absolutely the right decision, and the holy decision, in refusing to support PP's and Komen's ongoing atrocities against sinless babies. If you can't see that, then you are reading your Bible through a frighteningly distorted lens.

The everlasting gospel is salvation from sin. God has no program which provides forgiveness of sin without power over sin. Gods salvation program or gospet provides both. They are 100% linked. The first is imputed rightousness (takes care of "sins that are past" through the blood of the sacrifice of Christ, i.e. through the merits of Christ); the second is imparted rightousness (Christ within via the Holy Spirit). You may think of "rightousness" as "divine love". Both are provided at justification, that is, when one opens their hearts fully to God.

There was never a person, before, now, or in the future that is righteous. Jesus explained this. He said not even one. So, what you seek, you will not find. Not in one man or in a group. You see man is made in the image of God, but he is not God. Slowly, one realizes that the only one you can trust is God. All of us, are returned to whom we are created. Our lives are short. The answer in this life is to realize that your perception of the world is how you perceive the three feet around you. Not one of us will go through life without stress, disappointment, fear, anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, love, hope, excitement, and the list goes on and on. It is the journey of life that we all share. If we love each other, the best we can; if we lessen our expectations of others, and forgive them and ourselves for our faults, then the journey is easier. I laugh at myself and my situations. Then I thank God, that I don't take everything so seriously. Learn to love thyself with all your faults and all your goodness. Then do the same for the others. Why not try to be like God, his grace, his forgiveness, his love, are the best gifts. It is the season. Smile when you meet someone. It is amazing, you may find, as I have, almost all of them smile back. You see, life can be wonder. It is left up to you. We all need to find our way.

VaBlueRidge: "You see man is made in the image of God, but he is not God. Slowly, one realizes that the only one you can trust is God."

The Bible was written by man. This has always puzzled me. Here comes the 'Son of God' and he did not write anything for us. The written word WAS available to him. Yet he declined to leave anything from his own perspective except hearsay. None of his 'gospel' would be allowed today in a court of modern law as his own words.

      This saddens me.

Maybe breast cancer awareness should instead be committed to memory like the five requirements of Islam, so even an illiterate will get it.

This attempt to deprive women of information in order to prevent a penny going ultimately to an abortion somewhere might promote ignorance, but I promise you, it will never stop abortions. You can shut down all the research facilities in the world because somebody somewhere might also fund abortions with the money. But considering that cavewomen knew how to abort using herbs and stones, this will only succeed in keeping breast cancer as an unsolved puzzle.

They are jaw dropping stupid. They are going to force the poorest women in America to have unwanted children who won't get adopted; then refuse to sanction welfare programs to help them. But if these same "children" end up criminals and perhaps get the death penalty the righters will support killing them. There will just be 25-40 years of misery in between.

What did Jesus show to his followers? Love. What did Jesus state was the number one thing that all of should follow? Love. What is this holiday season about? Love. I say to all of you, I who has faced breast cancer, and almost died several times in these last two years, that the most important thing that all of you need to do is to be patient, loving, and understanding. A person has the right to run their business anyway they want to as long as it does not hurt anyone. $1 is not enough to be throwing slurs around at each other. Life is too short. If you feel strongly about donating to Cancer research, then walk/run at their fund raisers or just send money to the organization itself. Most importantly volunteer your time to talk to those who are going through any type of cancer trial. Don't be afraid. You job is to listen, console, and most importantly to provide hope through your love and faith in the future. I tell you yesterday, I spent 2 hours listening and talking to a friend about her heart disease. She asked me where I get my strength. I tell you as I tell her. I pointed straight up and said God. He is my strength. He is my hope. I tell you that love is the answer and brings peace of mind. I don't fear death for I know that God's love for me will carry me home to him. Happy holidays and may this New Year bring you all the love, peace and happiness that each of you seek. Love is the key. Love is the answer.

Shame on Lifeway. How can you cll yourself Pro Life when now you are directly making it more difficult to continue programs and research designed to SAVE MORE LIVES AND END SUFFERING!!!!?
Lifeway's reps. even admit to knowing that their contributions are not going to Pro Choice activities.

THIS IS NOT WHAT JESUS WOULD DO!!!!!
