My Take: Pulling 'All-American Muslim' ads is bad business

Editor's note: Zahid H. Bukhari is president of the Islamic Circle of North America.

By Zahid H. Bukhari, Special to CNN

Lowe’s Home Improvement recently caved to bigoted demands from the right-wing Florida Family Association and pulled advertising from TLC’s “All-American Muslim,” a reality show about five Muslim families in Dearborn, Michigan.

It shocks and saddens me that a Fortune 100 company such as Lowe’s, one of the most powerful brands in the United States and across the globe, would condone and side with outright bigotry. It’s not that we haven’t witnessed this behavior before, but Lowe’s decision to pull advertising from the show validates overt religious prejudice and gives credibility to an attack on our community.

What may come as a surprise to Lowe’s CEO Robert Niblock is that by taking a stand against our community, he is losing the business of a massive force in the American economy. American Muslims are more than 7 million strong and growing and have the buying power of between $170 billion and $200 billion annually.

Studies show that two-thirds of Muslim families make more than $50,000 a year, and a quarter make more than $100,000 a year. On average, we spend a lot of our money on home improvement - about $33 billion annually, according to an American Muslim market consumer study released by Dinar Standard, a research, advisory and business media firm that analyzes emerging Muslim markets.

The marketing firm JWT reported in 2007 that Muslim American consumers represented “a neglected market with huge potential for brands that are willing to connect with them.”

TLC’s “All-American Muslim” is the only television show about Muslim Americans. Niblock lacks insight and business savvy if he believes those who hate Muslims have greater purchasing power than Muslim Americans.

Just like the general consumer, Muslims like to shop where they feel welcome, whether that warm atmosphere is created by catering to our dietary requirements or by promoting our holidays.

When Best Buy wished shoppers a “Happy Eid Al-Adha” in its Thanksgiving 2009 circular, it faced similar backlash to what Lowe’s experienced from right-wing groups.

Thankfully, Best Buy stood firmly by its message. The American Muslim community was ecstatic and flooded the company with thanks, support and loyalty.

A 2010 study by the advertising firm Ogilvy & Mather found that 86% of American Muslim consumers believe American companies “need to make more of an effort to understand Muslim values” and 98% of Muslim consumers feel American brands “don’t actively reach out to Muslim consumers.”

Of those surveyed, 80% said they would "prefer to buy brands that support Muslim identity through promotion and celebration of religious festivals, for example." Most relevant to Lowe's is that 99% of Muslim consumers said they would stop supporting brands that offend them.

"To make matters even more alarming, a full 83% feel it is their responsibility to inform all their friends and family of what they know of the brand’s behavior," according to the study.

In 2006, Tom’s of Maine received halal certification, which means they are manufactured according to Islamic law, for almost 100% of its products. The Ogilvy & Mather study concluded that Tom's of Maine is now "one of the leaders in recognizing the needs of the American Muslim community.
“What they cannot certify as halal,” the study said, “they make clearly known to Muslim consumers, ensuring that they do not unwittingly compromise anyone."

The American Muslim Community has seen a tremendous outpouring of support from communities of all faiths in the past few days. The Islamic Circle of North America sent an e-mail blast to 50,000 people and urged them to act against the Lowe’s decision by boycotting their stores.

We have not, in 40 years as an organization, received a more positive and proactive response from the public. We are incredibly heartened and grateful for this show of support, and we know that we can make a statement through our boycott.

Lowe’s and other advertisers that are pulling ads from “All-American Muslim” may have pacified the completely baseless concerns of hate groups, but they’ve alienated American Muslims and their friends, neighbors and supporters.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Zahid H. Bukhari.

How long would this debate go on.... I believe this debate needs a 'much needed break' and get back to understand each other in a better way. I am sure we can grow over this by learning more about each other... Remember Quran refers to Christians and Jews as people of the book.... visit http://www.whyislam.org for more information and free distribution of islamic literature or a lively talk with Muslims... This is the best time my friends to know each others...

This is really a sad day in the evolution of this "democratic nation." Each time, it appears to be going forward, it returns to its violent and discriminatory birth. Nevertheless, it's good to carry hope in one's breast that because of the aspirations expressed by the founding fathers that somehow, some day intent and actions will merge. It begs the question whether this nation contains within its soul the capacity to realize its potential or will the dreams of its forefathers forever remain a mirage in the sand heap of history.

What instigated the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon? And what drives today's 24/7 mosque/imam-planned acts of terror and horror? The koran, Mohammed's book of death for all infidels and Muslim domination of the world by any means. Muslims must clean up this book removing said passages admitting that they are based on the Gabriel myth and therefore obviously the hallucinations and/or lies of Mohammed.

Until then, no Muslim can be trusted anytime or anywhere..................................

Your name is reality but you live in the stone ages. You obviously havent read the Quran and are relying on the media engineered "truth" of Islam. Why not be educated and give the Quran a try? call this toll free number to get your copy today free: 1-877-WhyIslam. There are 1.5 billion muslims all over the world today and they would take exception to your view on a faith they hold dear. About 9 million of them are here in the USA alone. So be kind to yourself. Get educated.

Lowe's knows Am. Muslim is propaganda, as do all Americans who are capable of connecting two or more neurons.

I just placed a $1,500 order with Lowe's for vinyl-clad and glass block windows. I also talked to the store manager to give Lowe's my support. He thanked me.

    Then we both laughed.

Yes laughter was also carried out by KKK, get a book and read-too bad you folks are rushing towards a permanent minority in a few years when you loose Texas in each Election cycle – I will post my laughter then with a Home Depot Manager.

  7. Jane

I am a practicing American Muslim. Traced my geneology back to 1800's when we entered the U.S. via N.C., from England. I am a multi-ethnic product of the Southern states. Have been Muslim for almost 18 years. Was a practicing Protestant for 35 years before I "converted" to Islam.

I don't hate my country (America). Have a brother, 2 nephews, and a neice who served/retired from military service. I spend my days caring for my family of 6 and work full time for an Islamic faith-based agency providing social services to anyone (Muslim and non-Muslim) in need. I attend my congregational worship services and socialize with family and friends.

I dress differently than you do (maybe). Although, my (Muslim and non-Muslim) professional peers share complements of my clothing often. I won't get drunk with you or with your husband. In fact, I won't be found alone with your husband, ever, even in my office.

I have a Master's degree in Computer Science with a major in Information Systems. I have over 20 years of Administrative experience. Both of my parents ran family owned businesses. They were from the Depression Era and WWII.

I don't want to blow up buildings or people either. It breaks my heart to see the violence and corruption creaping across the Earth. It defames my religion when misguided/tyrranical/angry people hurt others and try to justify their actions by using God's name. How familiar through the ages is "In the name of God" used by men who are "dead-set" to accompliish their own personal and political goals. (God help us all.)

I do grow weary at the villianization of my religion by those who truely don't know what they are talking about. But, unfortunately, they are convinced that they do. My suggestion ito them is to forego the rhetoric and truely explore the religion. Read the Quran from beginning to end – we do it a couple of times a year. Spend quality time with a moderate Muslim and exchange ideas and information with him/her And – be careful to believe everything you hear/read (i.e. consider your sources). Maybe you will come out with less hate in your heart and be more informed. Maybe you will learn something new.

Advertisement shouldn't be pulled from this show because of the pressure of hate mongers. It should be pulled because the reality show is such a poor and limited view of Muslims in America. Practicing Muslims recognize that Islam prohibits the buying and/or selling of alchohal (yeah, really) and also of tatooing. So if you are attempting to portray a good example of a Muslim, why give a non-practicing Muslim the 5 minutes of fame? Why not choose a local Imam (worship leader), a well known American scholar, a masjid Board member, a Director of an Islamic faith-based agency (there are quite a few), or a student or Principal of an Islamic school?

    December 16, 2011 at 4:45 pm |

      @ Jane

      " I "converted" to Islam. "
      Here's a credibility issue...

"... the villianization [sic] of my religion by those who truely don't know..."
Who might this be, Jane? Ignorant 'bigoted' westerners? Or Islamic zealots? Who exactly are the antagonists?

" Why not choose a local Imam (worship leader), a well known American scholar, a masjid Board member, a Director of an Islamic faith-based agency (there are quite a few), or a student or Principal of an Islamic school?"
Have you been watching the show, Jane? I have. Many of your recommended interviews have already taken place.

That's why the show is (excuse the expression..) bombing.

I think people are missing the point in why all the fuss.
It comes down to the line "Lowe’s decision to pull advertising from the show validates overt religious prejudice and gives credibility to an attack on our community."
It's not about Lowe's taking down there ads, it's about why they took them down, who they took them down for.
Lowe's took the ads down due to the pressure of the same extremists who inspired Anders Breivik.

    Islam 101

Mohammed was an illiterate, womanizing, lust and greed-driven, warmongering, hallucinating Arab, who also had embellishing/hallucinating/plagiarizing scribal biographers who not only added "angels" and flying chariots to the koran but also a militaristic agenda to support the plundering and looting of the lands of non-believers.

This agenda continues as shown by the massacre in Mumbai, the assassinations of Bhutto and Theo Van Gogh, the conduct of the seven Muslim doctors in the UK, the 9/11 terrorists, the 24/7 Sunni suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the 24/7 Shiite suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the Islamic bombers of the trains in the UK and Spain, the Bali crazies, the Kenya crazies, the Pakistani “koranics”, the Palestine suicide bombers/rocketeers, the Lebanese nutcases, the Taliban nut jobs, and the Filipino “koranics”.

And who funds this muck and stench of terror? The warmongering, Islamic, Shiite terror and torture theocracy of Iran aka the Third Axis of Evil and also the Sunni "Wannabees" of Saudi Arabia.

    Current problems:

The global Sunni-Shiite blood feud and the warmongering, womanizing (11 wives), hallucinating founder.

Mohammad (saw) was the most influential human being in history. In all positive aspects. He brought light to the darkness in the world. Freedom and rights to women never seen before. Equality to the believers and non believers. Muslim countries were the only ones allowing Jews to live amoungst them in peace when others were persecuting them. Christians and jews have lived in Muslim countries with full religious rights and freedom for over 1400 hundred years. There are about 2 billion Muslims in the world , you can't hold all responsible for the actions of a few that went astray and did not follow the correct teachings of the Prophet (saw).

Are you sure these violences happened due to Islamic teachings? Why then you don't see religious scholars taking part in these or teaching this? Why are you spreading bigoted lies against the Prophet of Islam? If the Prophet's character was something to attack, why then no knowledgeable Orientalist tried that? Why it has to be you who needs to do such a thing?

CA is not here to debate anything useful. It is only here to condemn those who don't meld with its hate...namely us Canadian's. I'd like to know exactly what Canadian's did to make it so bitter and hateful to us...did some Canadian woman/man turn it down (I say that whether it is male or female)? Maybe someday CA will realize that we are not going anywhere...we're happy to stay and p*ss it off...the more we see its posts, the funnier our days get. We know we are far better people than CA could ever wish to be...we love our neighbor's to the South and have great respect for them. Troll's like CA need to go back to their bridge and grow up!

We didn't ask you to Invade Iraq on a faulty intelligence, we didn't ask you to be the cause of several hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths ( but it doesn't matter how many Muslims you kill ). Are you fighting against the Soviet union, the Chinese or a super power country NO, you hand picked a very weak countries who you know for sure can't defend themselves from the mighty of US Military I don't know about you guys but I call this a coward terrorist, if this is not good enough you always have portrait us like someone who have the capacity of doing nothing but bad. Time is up you became your own enemy and your own destructive tools.

    • TruthPrevails

How is that a fair statement? 3000 plus people lost their lives as a direct result of order's from a dictator with close ties to this war. It is unfortunate that men and women have lost their lives in this war on both sides but such is the case with any war and these people fighting know what they are getting in to...they willing go forth and defend their country.

      December 16, 2011 at 7:26 am |

It doesn't matter how many in either country lost their lives...one death is too many!! It doesn't take away from the fact that when it came down to standing by your countries side and supporting it, we were right there without question!!! So yes it is our business!! We were affected greatly as your countries closest neighbor's...we cried along side your country on the day and weeks after and years after those horrible attacks. We lost people in those attacks. Whether you accept it or not, we will always matter to the USA...your tiny opinion on the matter doesn't count in the grand scheme of it.

Let's be honest with ourselves. Distrust of Muslims is not completely baseless. We have been involved in two wars fought largely by those who hate the West because of religious differences. Muslim extremists have conducted numerous acts of international terrorism. I think that the majority of us believe that it's a minority of Muslims committing these acts. However, it's time that we finally admit a sizable minority has turned to extremism. When a country is involved in two (well, now one) conflicts in which their adversaries evoke Allah's name and praise him for dead Americans, I feel that it's ridiculous to expect our population to keep placating this group.

    December 16, 2011 at 6:20 am |
    • TruthPrevails

Muslims definitely have a bad name within reason. While I don't support any religious belief system, especially where women are oppressed, I also don't support any particular religious group having all of its congregants put in to one pile...not every Muslim supports what happened, just like not every christard supports the inquisition or the crusades. It would be a pleasant change to see people treated for the way they treat others and not on the basis of their mythical belief's or lack of belief.

He still hasn't learned what a proper noun is. Hey, CA, you should realize that in the context you are using that word, "Canadian" is capitalized. I thought it was stuck in 5th grade. I might have overestimated "it". I think he's stuck in 3rd grade, and still has to raise his hand, even to mommy, when "it" has to use the bathroom.

Middle East does not hate the west because of religion differences. Please read the facts. Its mainly due to foreign policies of the United States and the fact that the U.S. is arming Isreal to occupy Palistine, degrade its people, and take away their rights and land. Its like china coming to the U.S and setting up military bases, settlements, buliding seperate highways and other public facilities only for the chinese. Check points everywhere. Feeling like a second class citizen in your own country. Would u be happy?
