Hindus ask Russian court to drop case against holy book

By Moni Basu, CNN

(CNN) – For Hindus it's the Song of God, but prosecutors in the Russian city of Tomsk want the Bhagavad Gita banned, calling it an extremist book that sows social discord.

A court was supposed to have rendered a decision Monday on the proposed ban, but adjourned until December 28 to hear more academic opinion on the matter.

Hindus around the world have expressed outrage at the treatment of one of the most important texts of Hinduism. The 700-verse scripture, written as a message from God taught by Lord Krishna, is a part of the Hindu epic Mahabharata.

The Indian ambassador to Russia, which guarantees religious freedom, objected to the Tomsk prosecutor's charges. And the Indian parliament erupted in harsh words for Russia. Angry lawmakers in the lower house demanded to know what action the Indian government planned to take.

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness, or ISKCON, said it was first notified of a complaint filed by the public prosecutor's office that objected to the third Russian edition of the Gita with commentary by ISCKON founder Swami Prabhupada. The complaint called portions of the book "objectionable" and "extremist."

After initial court proceedings in August, the district court appointed a three-member academic panel to submit a report within three months, according to ISKCON. The final hearing is now rescheduled for next week.

The Hindu American Foundation in the United States said prosecutors have taken words from the Gita out of context.

"We urge the Russian judiciary and government to uphold the basic rights of their Hindu citizens," said Jay Kansara, the foundation's associate director. "Any court ruling or law that would prohibit the Bhagavad Gita or any other Hindu religious literature would be considered a direct attack on the civil liberties of Russia's Hindu community and an affront to Hindus throughout the world."

The foundation raised its concerns in a letter to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in Washington. It said more than 1 billion Hindus around the world consider the Gita sacred.

The text, the foundation said, "is in no way a threat to Russian national security or to the degeneration of Christian values. On the contrary, the Bhagavad Gita is a millennia-old classical spiritual text that has inspired countless people of all faiths, and been studied and imbibed by some of the greatest scholars in the world, including Leo Tolstoy.

The Russian ambassador to India, Alexander Kadakin, blamed "madmen" in Tomsk for the latest row and said the Russian government has nothing to apologize for.

"Nothing has been committed by the Russian government," Kadakin told CNN's sister network CNN-IBN. "It is not the Russian government that started the case. These are some petty people in the far away though very beautiful city of Tomsk who did it. The government has nothing to apologize for, the government can only testify and reiterate the love and affection and highest esteem our nation has for Bhagavad Gita."

Kadakin said, however, India's reaction has been proper.

"Like Russia, India is also a democratic, secular and multi-confessional country and our two governments should not allow such things to happen," he said. "The Bhagavad Gita is a source of wisdom and inspiration not only for the people of India but for Russia as well and the world."

But the potential ban on the Hindu text is part of a disturbing trend in Russia, according to religious leaders in the United States who penned a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to raise the issue of escalating threats to religious freedom during meetings with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev at the White House last June.

"Russian authorities are using the 2002 Extremism Law to combat 'religious extremism' and, coming against an established pattern of local government obstruction of non-Russian Orthodox religious communities, this has led to a crackdown on religions that has been termed ... as the new 'Inquisition,'" said the letter signed by more than a dozen religious and human rights leaders.

The crackdown, it said, has affected a host of religious believers from Baptists to Jews to Hindus.

ISCKON has had a presence in Russia for decades. It said it has "faced periodic problems with respect to its properties and functioning in Moscow and elsewhere."

You were doing so well Russia building all these bridges connecting freely with your neighbors. Pushing for more sovereignty in other lands…I hope you work out this problem you’re having Russia…I believe you can be a good person if you try,….. if not I’ll have to play the hero all over your face

    Yours truly America

Seriously though there is nothing wrong with a religion that puts women on such a high pedestal, we besides being slightly pasogynistic at heart, but you don’t really see that in Hinduism it has to be like the one of the most peaceful religions

I am a Hindu Woman from India. You are mistaken about hinduism and the role of woman in Indian.
    Women In Ancient India

Women enjoyed a position of respect and stature in ancient Vedic India. Women of the Vedic period (circa 5000-1200 BCE) were epitomes of intellectual and spiritual attainment. The Vedas have lots to say about these women, who both complemented and supplemented their male partners. When it comes to talking about significant female figures of the Vedic period, four names – Ghosha, Lopamudra, Sulabha Maitreyi, and Gargi – come to mind. The ideals of Indian women hood are also embodied in the tales of the ancient Puranas such as the Srimad Bhagavatam.
Further, many of the sages are named in a matrilineal manner, emphasizing the role of the Mother and refuting the oft held belief that the vedic period was a patriarchal society.
Yes it is true that various that various degenerate practices like sati was prevalent in India. But where have you seen or heard or read about its practice being prevalent?? please substantiate your allegations.there are ills in every society.I am aware of the ills in my society as well as in yours, both past and present.
The Idea of Reincarnation is basic to Hinduism. You want the science of it..I will give it to you.
The belief behind reincarnation is simply that just as in the physical world the entire energy of the material universe remains constant and only changes in form so also the spiritual energy of the entire cosmos remains constant but only takes this or that form. Thus some are born in this world and some are born in other worlds, while some remain unborn in their spirit form. The sum total of all the physical and spiritual existence -the sum total of all that is,is within the Supreme called in Vedic scriptures as the Brahman.

In India, millions of girls are strangled, slowly starved or simply tossed in the trash. Moreover, in India, at least 1,370 girls are aborted every day. As a comparison, some 250 Indians die every day in road accidents. Terrorists killed about six people, on an average, every day in 2009. In the last two decades of economic progress, 10 million girls have died as such in India.
SHAME ON INDIA AND ITS BARBARIC AND MEDIEVAL CULTURE !!!
Indians have killed more human beings (girls particularly) than Al Qaeda and Talibans put together.

KRM1007 (or whatever)..................I am assuming that you are American and Christian to boot (could be wrong on the first count but not the second). Lets not forget the 10 million (and more) abortions in the USA since the 1970's. Lets not forget the massacre of the Amerindians in the Americas when the Europens came, or, the massacre of the Africans when the visited there, or, the slavery of millions of Africans, or, what has happened in Iraq, or Afghanistan, or further back the Inquisition (I am talking about the enlightened Europeans), or the crusades, and...and ...and....and.....................
You may say what you want about India (or Barata) but they never attacked anyone.............................or invaded any other country....or coveted what any other culture had.....................put that down to what they had learned from the Mahabharata (including the Gita). Can you say the same for your esteemed bible...what has it taught you?
      Throughout their entire history

I don't care what another country has, if it belongs to another country and a niehboring country is in possession of it, then they should return it... and yes, before any asks, i would say the same if it was a bible...fact is these books are not just religious in nature but historical as well. The idea of destorying a book for whatever reason you can think of is thousands of years old and a time honored tradition, but with that said, we have a huge black hole in the historic timeline for these exact reasons. This sadly could be the precurser to another holy war... i hope not! Hindu's are the oldest religious people on the planet and will fight as anyother would in the face of intolerence. Lets not allow the weight of this situation to fall like everyelse in gravity's wake, but instead lets rise above and find new friends we never knew we always had. Return the book to its homeland and let there be peace...or war, its all relative! This makes me sad, all thru-out history you can study people stealing relics for sale, personal glory, whatever reason – it always causes a backlash that could have been, provided any forethought given before the act was committed, avoided! The only disasters we can't stop only deal with are natural ones, we shouldn't strive to compound natural disasters with man made ones but rather learn to live in harmony with one another and nature as we once did. Untill then, lets just try to understand one another yes?

Bhagawad Gita As it is …as I have studied it
The book is an extract from the great epic The Mahabharata. The Mahabharata written in Sanskrit by the ancient sage Veda Vyasa is 10 times the size of Illiad and Odessey and 4 times the size of yet another great Indian epic the Ramayana. The Bhagawad Gita is cosidered by noted scholars and intellectulals, like Albert Einstein,Leo Tolstoy and others,to consist of some of the most beautiful verses of sanskrit literature and as more of a philosophical, spiritual text rather than a dogmatic religious doctrine. It opens with prince Arjuna, the great warrior/archer,in a moral dilemma.Arjuna wants to give up his arms as he observes the opponents who were his own cousins, uncles,Gurus (teachers) who had imparted great knowledge to him and he considers forsaking the battle field.Lord Krishna who has very graciously taken up the role of Arjuna’s charioteer, though he is the Supreme himself, advises Arjuna to fight because it is his royal duty as the great warrior prince to defeat his enemies. The text then elevates to a moral level explaining the importance of performing ones socio-moral duties and responsibilities which one is born to do on this earth. Thus Arjuna should fight because Arjuna is the bravest warrior and also because Arjuna is fighting for justice,as the Kauravas have wrongfully taken over the throne of the great kingdom of Hastinapur of which the 5 Pandava brothers are the rightful descendents. Thus the fight is symbolic of the struggle between good and evil forces and of the ultimate triumph of Good over Evil..The text then elevates to a spiritual level.Arjuna is a great soul situated in the mode of goodness and thus Lord Krishna ,though himself being the Supreme,is Arjuna’s friend,Charioteer,Guide and Teacher.Krishna thus advises Arjuna to carry out justice for the opponents, the Kauravas; who are misguided souls entrapped in this material existence by the web of ignorance, lust and greed. Thus in defeating the Kauravas ,Arjuna will be liberating them from their state of tamas (ignorance) and rajas (passions).Arjuna by liberating his opponenets will himself attain liberation from the material existence and be united with the Supreme at the highest spiritual realm. The text here elevates to a metaphysical level exploring the nature of existence, the nature of the soul, the nature of ultimate knowledge and the yogic discipline to attain that ultimate knowledge. The ultimate knowledge is that any individual can attain the Lord by complete devotion and servitude toHim or through intellectual persuit by studying the devine scriptures.Lord Krishna also explicitely states that do not try to convince others about me but simply offer your complete devotion to me.Lord Krishna advises Arjuna to do his duties as a warrior prince but without expectations of results. Here he teaches one to perform one’s duties without attachment to its rewards, in servitude to Lord ,knowing that each individual being is but an instrument of the Lord. Thus the Supreme (Brahman/Hari/Maha Vishnu) resides within all individual beings (jeevatma) bar none as the Super soul (Paramatma), but is at the same time above and beyond all of existence and thus remains unaffected by the physical, material universe. In the Vishnu Purana it is mentioned that the entire universe accommodates in an infinitesimal point of His being. In one stanza Lord Krishna says that when ever and where ever there is a rise in irreligious feelings ,immorality and injustice ,to restore order and justice and to annihilate evil,I will descend on this earth time and time again in myriad forms (avatars).
P.S.- For the sake of the Supreme I refrain from any remark against any other religion. OM HARI,HARI OM.

    Hare Rama,Hare Rama,Rama Rama,Hare Hare.

A Holy ghost, two wooden posts used to torture people – a symbol of divinity and worship, a man swallowed by a whale, a garden where eating an apple is a sin, a boat that contains animals in existence, a woman who gave birth as a virgin..........

And all this makes sense ?? But you find the idea of considering holy an animal that is central to the life in an agrarian society-a cow to be bizarre ?!

      “New Torah For Modern Minds

Abraham, the Jewish patriarch, probably never existed. Nor did Moses. The entire Exodus story as recounted in the Bible probably never occurred. The same is true of the tumbling of the walls of Jericho. And David, far from being the fearless king who built Jerusalem into a mighty capital, was more likely a provincial leader whose reputation was later magnified to provide a rallying point for a fledgling nation.

Such startling propositions – the product of findings by archaeologists digging in Israel and its environs over the last 25 years – have gained wide acceptance among non-Orthodox rabbis. But there has been no attempt to disseminate these ideas or to discuss them with the laity – until now.

The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, which represents the 1.5 million Conservative Jews in the United States, has just issued a new Torah and commentary, the first for Conservatives in more than 60 years. Called "Etz Hayim" ("Tree of Life" in Hebrew), it offers an interpretation that incorporates the latest findings from archaeology, philology, anthropology and the study of ancient cultures. To the editors who worked on the book, it represents one of the boldest efforts ever to introduce into the religious mainstream a view of the Bible as a human rather than divine docu-ment. “

      2. Jesus was an illiterate Jewish peasant/carpenter/simple preacher man who suffered from hallucinations (or “mythicizing” from P, M, M, L and J) and who has been characterized anywhere from the Messiah from Nazareth to a mythical character from mythical Nazareth to a ma-mzer from Nazareth (Professor Bruce Chilton, in his book Rabbi Jesus). An-alyses of Jesus’ life by many contemporary NT scholars (e.g. Professors Ludemann, Crossan, Borg and Fredriksen, ) via the NT and related doc-uments have concluded that only about 30% of Jesus' sayings and ways noted in the NT were authentic. The rest being embellishments (e.g. miracles)/hallucinations made/had by the NT authors to impress various Christian, Jewish and Pagan sects.

The 30% of the NT that is "authentic Jesus" like everything in life was borrowed/plagiarized and/or improved from those who came before. In Jesus' case, it was the ways and sayings of the Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Hitt-ites, Canaanites, OT, John the Baptizer and possibly the ways and sayings of traveling Greek Cynics.

For added "pizzazz", Catholic theologians divided god the singularity into three persons and invented atonement as an added guilt trip for the "pew people" to go along with this trinity of overseers. By doing so, they made god the padre into god the "filicider".

      Current RCC problems:

Pedophiliac priests, an all-male, mostly white hierarchy, atonement theology and original sin!!!!

2 b., Luther, Calvin, Joe Smith, Henry VIII, Wesley, Roger Williams, the Great “Babs” et al, founders of Christian-based religions or combination religions also suffered from the belief in/hallucinations of "pretty wingie thingie" visits and "prophecies" for profits analogous to the myths of Catholicism (resurrections, apparitions, ascensions and immacu-late co-nceptions).

      Current problems:
Adulterous preachers, pedophiliac clerics, "propheteering/ profiteering" evangelicals and atonement theology,

      3. Mohammed was an illiterate, womanizing, lust and greed-driven, warmongering, hallucinating Arab, who also had embellishing/hallucinating/plagiarizing scribal biographers who not only added "angels" and flying chariots to the koran but also a militaristic agenda to support the plundering and looting of the lands of non-believers.

This agenda continues as shown by the ma-ssacre in Mumbai, the as-sas-sinations of Bhutto and Theo Van Gogh, the conduct of the seven Muslim doctors in the UK, the 9/11 terrorists, the 24/7 Sunni suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the 24/7 Shiite suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the Islamic bombers of the trains in the UK and Spain, the Bali crazies, the Kenya crazies, the Pakistani “koranics”, the Palestine suicide bombers/rocketeers, the Lebanese nutcases, the Taliban nut jobs, the Ft. Hood follower of the koran, and the Filipino “koranics”.

And who funds this muck and stench of terror? The warmongering, Islamic, Shiite terror and torture theocracy of Iran aka the Third Axis of Evil and also the Sunni "Wannabees" of Saudi Arabia.

      Current crises:

The Sunni-Shiite blood feud and the warmongering, womanizing (11 wives), hallucinating founder.

      5. Hinduism (from an online Hindu site) – "Hinduism cannot be described as an organized religion. It is not founded by any individual. Hinduism is God centered and therefore one can call Hinduism as founded by God, because the answer to the question ‘Who is behind the eternal principles and who makes them work?’ will have to be ‘Cosmic power, Divine power, God’."

The caste/laborer system, reincarnation and cow worship/reverence are problems when saying a fair and rational God founded Hinduism."

      Current problems:

The caste system, reincarnation and cow worship/reverence.

      6. Buddhism- "Buddhism began in India about 500 years before the birth of Christ. The people living at that time had become disillusioned with certain beliefs of Hinduism including the caste system, which had grown extremely complex. The number of outcasts (those who did not belong to any particular caste) was continuing to grow."

"However, in Buddhism, like so many other religions, fanciful stories arose concerning events in the life of the founder, Siddhartha Gautama (fifth century B.C.):"

Archaeological discoveries have proved, beyond a doubt, his historical character, but apart from the legends we know very little about the circu-mstances of his life. e.g. Buddha by one legend was supposedly talking when he came out of his mother's womb.

Bottom line: There are many good ways of living but be aware of the hallucinations, embellishments, lies, and myths surrounding the founders and foundations of said rules of life.

Then, apply the Five F rule: "First Find the Flaws, then Fix the Foundations". And finally there will be religious peace and religious awareness in the world!!!!!

Hinduism teaches people that women are the property of men,and that the birth of a girl is bad luck.

In many parts of India, girls aren't allowed to go to school or to work, many girls as young as 8 are forced to get married to older men in rural parts of India.

Widows are burnt alive with the corpse of their husbands in many parts of India.

We can't allow a misogynistic faith to exist in the west.

The Tamil tigers terrorist organisation is a Hindu fanatic group, that has killed tens of thousands of innocent people in Sri Lanka.

The Tamil tigers were the first group to introduce and practice suicide bomb attacks.

The Tamil tigers even killed former Indian Prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, because he wanted to end Hindu extremism in the region.

The Shiv Sena are another Hindu extremist organisation which is anti-west and believes non-Hindus should be forcefully converted to Hinduism.

In India female infants are buried alive or aborted before birth, because of this there are far more male than females in India,

Let's not forget about the scores of honor killings in India.

I completely support Russia's decision and I think other western countries should follow suit.

"Tamil tigers is a Hindu organization" – Go check your facts and find out the source of their funding and instigation. Is it any surprise that it is the damned Church that funded and supported them?

The Shiv Sena, RSS, etc. are fed up with pseudo-secularism in India. That's all. India, in all its history, has never interfered in another country and people of no religion have ever been persecuted. Can you say the same thing about the Christists and the Mohameddans?

Female infanticide, honor killings, etc. are a blot on India, but they have nothing to do with religion. What has the Bhagavad Gita got to do with any of this?

"Hinduism teaches people that women are the property of men,and that the birth of a girl is bad luck" – where did you learn this? Church propaganda, perhaps.

Yes it is true that various that various degerate practices like sati was prevalent in India. But where have you seen or heard or read about its practice being prevalent?? please substantiate your allegations.there are ills in every society.I am aware of the ills in my society as well as in yours.
The Idea of Reincarnation is basic to Hinduism. You want the science of it..I will give it to you.
The belief behind reincarnation is simply that just as in the physical world the entire energy of the material universe remains constant and but only changes in form so also the spiritual energy of the entire cosmos remains constant but only takes this or that form. Thus some are born in this world and someare born in other worlds while some remain unborn in their spirit form. The sum total of all the physical and spiritual existence -the sum total of all that is,is within the Supreme called in Vedic scriptures as the Brahman.

Clearly, your ignorance is not something you are aware of! Hinduism never claims that women are property. In fact in Hindu society, women hold a revered place and numerous parables and religious texts on Hinduism describe the role of women in society as a noble and honored. Your primitive understanding not withstanding, the present Indian fixation for the "male child" is a popular convention born out of financial considerations – not religious!

Tamil Tigers never fought for Hinduism because many Sri Lankan Sinhalas are Hindus also. The fight was about ethnicity. At least have the decency to learn about the examples you quote.

Shiv Sena doesn't want to convert non-Hindus. Conversion into Hinduism is frowned upon and not really recognized by most Hindus. Shiv Sena wants to prevent poor illiterate Hindus from converting to monotheistic dogmas like Islam and Christianity merely for financial gain. Their position is mostly rhetoric and the support they enjoy is very limited. Even in their home state, they don't have a majority politically.

It is amusing how monotheists preach about "misogyny" and Hinduism when the only women allowed as a religious order are women who deny their own existence and cloister themselves from society. Women are forced to continually lay guilt upon themselves as being the bearers of "sin" and yet Hinduism is considered misogynistic because Indian families now prefer male children or that women were once upon a time forcibly asked to commit suicide at their husband's funeral.

Even today, women in the Western world don't enjoy the kind of political power Women in Asian cultures get. Even in India, the most powerful political leader is a woman – a Christian woman at that!. And Hindus are apparently intolerant and misogynistic ??

That's rich coming from a Western Christian. Tell us how does your religion treat women ? Are there any female symbols of divinity ?? For a religion that has systematiclly perpetuated the myth that women are source of sin, to now pass sanctimonious judgement over a religion that is far superior to your monotheistic barbarism is rich.

The West is a primitive, shallow and uncultured distopia using technological progress and material wealth as a facade to mask its moral, cultral and philosophical banckrupcy. Go back to your slovenly comforts and your denegerate materialistic mundane existence for your kind has no place in passing judgement about a culture as old as civilization itself.

Bhagawad Gita As it is …as I have studied it
The book is an extract from the great epic The Mahabharata. Thus Arjuna should fight because Arjuna is the bravest warrior and also because Arjuna in fighting for justice,as the Kauravas have wrongfully taken over the throne of the great kingdom oh Hastinapur of which the 5 Pandava brothers are the rightful descendents. Thus the fight is symbolic of the struggle between good and evil forces and of the ultimate triumph of Good over Evil..The text then elevates to a spiritual level.Arjuna is a great soul situated in the mode of goodness and thus Lord Krishna ,though himself being the Supreme,is Arjuna’s friend,Charioteer,Guide and Teacher.Krishna thus advises Arjuna to carry out justice for the opponents, the Kauravas who are misguided souls entrapped in this material existence by the web of ignorance, lust and greed. The ultimate knowledge is that any individual can attain the Lord by complete devotion and servitude to him or through intellectual persuit by studying the devine texts.Lord Krishna also explicitely states that don’t try to convince others about me but simply offer your complete devotion to me.Lord Krishna advises Arjuna to do his duties af a warrior prince but without expectations of results. Here he teaches one to perform ones duties without attachment to its rewards in servitude to Lord knowing that each individual being is but an instrument of the lord. Thus the Supreme (Brahman/Hari/Maha Vishnu) resides within all individual beings (jeevatma) bar none as the Super soul (Paramatma) but is at the same time above and beyond all of existence and thus remains unaffected by the physical material universe. In the Vishnu Purana it is mentioned that the entire universe accommodates in an infinitesimal point of his being. In one stanza Lord Krishna says that when ever and where ever there is a rise rise in irreligious feelings ,immorality and injustice ,to restore order and justice and to annihilate evil,I will ascend on this earth time and time again in myriad forms (avatars).

Not every country has religious freedom. If they do not want that religion in their country they should peacefully expell all people of that religion and not violate their human rights but help them to live elsewhere. Why keep people you don't want? I've never understood that with governments. If you don't like people of a certain way, then remove them and relocate them in a country more willing to have them. Why is this so difficult?

    • There was no Gabriel i.e. Islam fails as a religion. Christianity partially fails.

    • There was no Moroni i.e. Mormonism is nothing more than a business cult.

    • Sacred/revered cows, monkey gods, castes, reincarnations and therefore Hinduism fails as a religion.

From Professors JD Crossan and Watts' book, Who is Jesus.

"That Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate, as the Creed states, is as certain as anything historical can ever be.

“ The Jewish historian, Josephus and the pagan historian Tacitus both agree that Jesus was executed by order of the Roman governor of Judea. And is very hard to imagine that Jesus' followers would have invented such a story unless it indeed happened.

“While the brute fact that of Jesus' death by crucifixion is historically certain, however, those detailed narratives in our present gospels are much more problematic. "

“My best historical reconstruction would be something like this. Jesus was arrested during the Passover festival, most likely in response to his action in the Temple. Those who were closest to him ran away for their own safety.

I do not presume that there were any high-level confrontations between Caiaphas and Pilate and Herod Antipas either about Jesus or with Jesus. No doubt they would have agreed before the festival that fast action was to be taken against any disturbance and that a few examples by crucifixion might be especially useful at the outset. And I doubt very much if Jewish police or Roman soldiers needed to go too far up the chain of command in handling a Galilean peasant like Jesus. It is hard for us to imagine the casual brutality with which Jesus was probably taken and executed. All those "last week" details in our gospels, as distinct from the brute facts just mentioned, are prophecy turned into history, rather than history remembered."

See also Professor Crossan's reviews of the existence of Jesus in his other books especially, The Historical Jesus and also Excavating Jesus (with Professor Jonathan Reed doing the archeology discussion) .

Other NT exegetes to include members of the Jesus Seminar have published similar books with appropriate supporting references.

Part of Crossan's The Historical Jesus has been published online at books.google.com/books.

There is also a search engine for this book on the left hand side of the opening page. e.g. Search Josephus

See also Wikipedia's review on the historical Jesus to include the Tacitus' reference to the crucifixion of Jesus.

      From ask.com,

"One of the greatest historians of ancient Rome, Cornelius Tacitus is a primary source for much of what is known about life the first and second centuries after the life of Jesus. His most famous works, Histories and Annals, exist in fragmentary form, though many of his earlier writings were lost to time. Tacitus is known for being generally reliable (if somewhat biased toward what he saw as Roman immorality) and for having a uniquely direct (if not blunt) writing style.

Then there are these scriptural references:

      Crucifixion of Jesus:(1) 1 Cor 15:3b; (2a) Gos. Pet. 4:10-5:16,18-20; 6:22; (2b) Mark 15:22-38 = Matt 27:33-51a = Luke 23:32-46; (2c) John 19:17b-25a,28-36; (3) Barn. 7:3-5; (4a) 1 Clem. 16:3-4 (=Isaiah 53:1-12); (4b) 1 Clem. 16.15-16 (=Psalm 22:6-8); (5a) Ign. Reality Check

"That Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate, as the Creed states, is AS CERTAIN as anything historical can ever be".
So you see............your sentence is only certain in its uncertainness"

Like I had stated earlier the Pope stuck the history of a Jesus into Josephus's Antiquities...................that is beyond a doubt.

As to Publius Cornelius Tacitus.....well he was born 25 years after Jesus died...................meaning that 50 years would have passed (after christ) before he would be any good as a historian. Now what the hell would he know about a backwater world called Judea when he was a senator in Rome except from what he heard from a delusional people called christians who were then increasingly crowding in Rome? Note that Tacitus did not reveal the source of his information...so what good is it....or of what value. And as I firmly believe that he was quoting what the worthless were themselves saying about the massiah....then this info is well them....just worthless. Note that when he was referring to Pontius he referred to him as a PREFECT (when in fact Pontius was a procurator). Also note that he thought that the christians ate the body of and drank the blood of their god...therefore performing cannabilism...........................so definitely he was just hearsaying....................
