SNL Tim Tebow controversy continues debate over quarterback's faith

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – When “Saturday Night Live” parodied Tim Tebow’s relationship with Jesus last weekend, not everyone was laughing.

Televangelist Pat Robertson called the sketch, in which the Denver Broncos quarterback is met in a locker room by Jason Sudeikis playing Jesus, an example of “anti-Christian bigotry that is just disgusting.”

Speaking on the Christian Broadcast Network on Monday, Robertson wondered aloud about how other religions would have reacted to a similar parody.

“If this had been a Muslim country and they had done that and had Mohammed doing that stuff, you would have found bombs being thrown off and bodies on the street,” Robertson said.

The SNL sketch had Jesus meeting Tebow after the Broncos come-from-behind win against the Chicago Bears the previous Sunday. In it,
Sudeikis jokes that instead of reading the Bible, Tebow might want to read the playbook so that he (Jesus) doesn’t have to intervene in the 4th quarter.

“First of all, you are welcome – yes, I, Jesus Christ, are the reason you have won your past 6 football games,” says Sudeikis.

The skit and the controversy continues a narrative that combines religion, sport, and seemingly miraculous come-from-behind victories and that is turning Heisman-trophy-winning Tebow into a cultural icon.

From Rick Perry comparing himself to Tebow in a recent Republican presidential debate to Sarah Palin describing herself as “pro-Tebow” in an interview on Sunday, Tebow is gaining public admiration far outside of the world of football.

“I am so pro-Tebow,” Palin, the former vice presidential nominee, said on Fox News. “He is so unashamed of his savior, Jesus of Nazareth. He knows that Jesus is going to rock your world when you give it all over to him. He knows that the son of God should be honored a praised and Tebow does that and I respect it.”

Tebow’s on-field calling card has become his habit of getting down on one knee to pray while everyone else on the team celebrates, an act known as “Tebowing.” The gesture had been mocked by Tebow opponents and has led to high school students being suspended but has also spurred a Tebowing website and has been adopted by some other NFLers.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger Tebowed during a Monday night game.

Tebow has remained mostly silent about all the drama around him and his faith. An avid Twitter user with over 700,000 followers, Tebow hasn’t commented on the SNL skit or Roberterson’s or Palin’s recent comments.

The whole media has been slamming the Christian Faith by mocking T.Tebow ....why not SNL! No surprise there! To make it fair I would like to see SNL do a skit of John Belushi snorting mounts of cocain and dropping dead on the set!.....or would that be too desrespectful of one of there own. maybe Jim Belushi his bro can play him. Ha HA! yea it's funny!

      Hmmmm.....

      That seems about right

SNL mocks Tebow becaucse he believes jesus is a football fan

Sadly, Pat Robertson talking about how other countries would be blowing up bombs and people would be dead in the street...makes me wonder if that isn't what he wants to happen and how he expects people to react. Does he promote Christian terrorists? Is this not the type of language that turns rational people away from his religion. Christianity is nothing more than hero worship and leads to multiple groups of people worshipping people and not God. If it's not a billion people worshipping the Pope as though he is Jesus, then it's an entire country worshipping a football player as though he's the voice of God. Society worshipped Tiger Woods and then look what happened when he didn't live up to their moral standards. People worship celebrities etc etc. And then they are all surprised when these people fall short, prove that they are not perfect. Perhaps the world would be a better place if people started to realize that people aren't perfect, but that they are supposed to strive to be. Unfortunately, a lot of Christians think that all you have to do is pop out of the womb and you're divine.

Bibletruth wrote, " God is never wrong."

Your god said he created the earth before any stars. Your god was wrong.

Your god said there was vegetation on earth before the sun. Your god was wrong.

Your god said all humanity was created from one man, and "Eve" – who was actually a genetic clone of Adam, thus also a male. Your god was wrong.

    Do you need more?

    December 22, 2011 at 9:54 am |
    • John Richardson

You know? I never thought of that before, ie the fact that Eve was a genetic clone of Adam. So it WAS Adam and Steve after all! Hey, all humans being descended from two males is no more ridiculous than god-human or angel-human se-xual relations, or people being created from dirt and any of many, many idiotic "miracles" cited in that book.

      December 22, 2011 at 10:03 am |
    • Louise Cypher

the third one actually wrong you can make a genetic clone and revers the gender a clone is not an exact copy of a person you just use the DNA to fertilize an egg. You can easily alter the chromosomes to get you desired se.x, and still have it consider a clone. If we can do it, then there god can, although, it’s just a myth, a metaphor really, no deferent then Izanami and Izanagi, and you forgot about Lilith.
Sorry to burst your bobble there but I did clone, a male moues, and make a female first year stuff really… of course I did not put them in a place to breed, it just felt wrong to me. Ha! This coming from a guy who’s trying to make a lizard mammal hybrid but who wouldn’t want a pet chimera.

While not surprising, SNL's mockery of Christianity is disturbing. And even more disturbing are the comments I have read on various other websites from "Christians" who find nothing wrong with it because, after all, "God has a sense of humor." Indeed He does. But, His sense of humor is a holy sense of humor, and I find it hard to believe He's laughing at the mockery of His Son.

    December 22, 2011 at 8:51 am |
    • John Richardson

A "holy sense of humor"????? I can only imagine how dismal THAT would be!

Anyway, what these other Christians have really been saying is that THEY have grown up and developed and sense of humor. You might try it yourself!

That's the thing; I HAVE a sense of humor. But mocking someone for their faith, as well as mocking Christ, is NOT humorous.

      December 22, 2011 at 2:17 pm |
    • Mike

Not a big fan of 700 Club. Pat Robertson has, unfortunately, said some crazy things.

      December 22, 2011 at 8:15 pm |
    • tallulah13

So Mike, when did god tell you about his sense of humor? You seem to have a special insight. What part of the bible mentions god's "holy sense of humor"?

I suspect Mike, like so many christians on this blog, is making things up. Where I come from, when people make things up it's called "lying."

      December 23, 2011 at 10:00 am |
    • SeanNJ

@Mike: Especially that part about the dead guy coming back to life. Robertson is completely off his rocker.

      December 23, 2011 at 10:02 am |
    • Mike

@tallulah13: As Christians, we believe we were created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). If we, as humans created in the image of God, are able to perceive and express humor, God must share that ability (see 1 Samuel 5:1-5 for an example). However, because God is holy and humans are sinful, what we find humorous and what God finds humorous are not necessarily the same. While SNL's "job" is to make fun of current events, the subject in this case is the very faith that has transformed my life, and many others lives as well. Pat Robertson is not a voice for ALL Christians. The only voice for ALL Christians is that of Jesus, who is full of grace and truth.

      December 23, 2011 at 1:30 pm |
    • Rick

Mike: Pretty certain as to what God would fine humorous, are you?

  6. Reality

Luther, Calvin, Joe Smith, Henry VIII, Wesley, Roger Williams, the Great “Babs” et al, founders of Christian-based religions or combination religions also suffered from the belief in/hallucinations of "pretty wingie thingie" visits and "prophecies" for profits analogous to the myths of Catholicism (resurrections, apparitions, ascensions and immacu-late co-nceptions).

    Current problems:

Adulterous preachers, pedophiliac clerics, "propheteering/ profiteering" evangelicals like Robertson and atonement theology,

That doesn't mean GOD will, but we do. I am starting to understand the virulant hatred for Christianity on this site, but I'd ask that you hate the individuals who are guilty, not all of us.

Jud 1:3 ¶ Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort [you] that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. Contend is an active verb that means to fight for the faith. I won't back down from these arrogant self-righteous individuals. Law to the proud. Grace to the humble. Just like Jesus did.

Ace, Okay, I'll help you with this one: Rom 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. In other words, it prevents EVERYONE from being self-righteous. They are left standing guilty before God. Guilty. The wages of sin is death. Are ya pickin up what I'm layin down so far?

Your(and my) penalty can only be paid by a blood sacrifice. Jesus willingly paid the price for you. All you have to do is accept it, and repent(turn away) from your sin. Do that and God will make you a new creation. I'd like to continue this, but I've got to go now. Goodnight.

      December 21, 2011 at 10:27 pm |
    • HotAirAce

Alf, I don't think that any Canadian is trying to accomplish anything for or as Canadians. We are eerily participating in a public forum as individuals. CA has seized on us being Canadian because he has nothing to counter any of our positions with. He has no substance and is too cowardly to even state his religious beliefs – in a belief blog! So he has firmly wrapped himself in the American flag, but has only succeeded in oh so clearly demonstrating his xenophobia and homophobia.

      December 21, 2011 at 10:33 pm |
    • HotAirAce

Sorry – eerily should have been merely, although I suppose it is not entirely inappropriate. Auto spell checking by Steve Jobs is every bit as bad as that by Billy Gates.

I like him because he doesn't take any crap from you jokers. He's got a spine that doesn't turn to jello the first time one you call those who disagree with you names. i.e. bigot, hateful, christard, imbecile, or by attacking the Christian faith i.e. the babble, sky fairy, jebus, etc. Some Christians choose to turn the other cheek and tuck tail and cower down when attacked. Not me. And captain america doesn't either, Christian or not. And he makes a valid point as to foreigners trying to impersonate Americans and thus infuence American opinion.

What Tebow is doing is very appropriate for a Christian and there is no other way to profess your Christian belief better than to show the world you live (and work & play) for Christ. Only thing is, Christ should be getting all the glory. This would be Tebow's best opportunity (better yet, any Christians' best opportunity) to exhalt Christ and preach to the world on WHY he does what he does, in and out of the playing field.

And for those who suffer the mocking of Tebow (and other Christians in recent times), we don't need to sweat it, as Jesus had it much much worse. There's a reason why the Bible teaches: Luke 9:23 – And He was saying to them all, “ If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

George, you said, "The Bible tells us that no one will enter the Kingdom of God except through Jesus. It is quite clear. That's not me. And it's not hate. I feel sorry for those who are brought to Jesus but reject Him."

@George.. so why take the extreme measures of the const.itutional amendments to ban them?

Besides.. have you read your bible in its entirety? including the books/verses that were banned from KJV by mortal politicians and kings to suit their needs? Those books could hold a lot of truth that contradicts your current belief too.. Ever considered that?

    December 21, 2011 at 5:45 pm |

I NEVER said that I think other faiths should be banned. On the contrary, they should have freedom of worship. I just want to make clear that America is a Christian nation to remove all doubt for those who say otherwise.

There was never any doubt in the first place about what the United Sates is and still is on the position of being religious.
It is a country that is neither in favor or dis-favor of one particular religion – I'm a Canadian and even I see and know that.

The 'god' on the currency of the US dollar bills is the reference of a single unity reference for those who want a symbol but it is not a synonymous name to any personal god (like 'Jesus', 'Thor' etc..)

The only problem a person has with the above facts is that the person wants his personal god in the reference. It is what you yourself desire because you feel you are right.

      December 21, 2011 at 6:27 pm |

@George.. so what is that drivel I keep reading about the forefathers specifically clarifying that America is meant to be a secular nation that allows people of all faiths to be free in it and will allow a separation between church and state.

And I thought that is what made this country so great.. Did you hear something different?

      December 21, 2011 at 6:28 pm |

Suppose a man or woman among you, in one of your towns that the LORD your God is giving you, has done evil in the sight of the LORD your God and has violated the covenant by serving other gods or by worshiping the sun, the moon, or any of the forces of heaven, which I have strictly forbidden. When you hear about it, investigate the matter thoroughly. If it is true that this detestable thing has been done in Israel, then that man or woman must be taken to the gates of the town and stoned to death. (Deuteronomy 17:2-5 NLT)

I watch the sun rise in Israel and fell to my knees in worship
I have done evil by conspiring to burn down a church, legally of course it’s how the town does deconstruction

I have admitted it all and yet no stoning what you guys cannot even follow your god commands.

      December 21, 2011 at 5:09 pm |
    • Clayton

George, when white supremacists have been using the Bible for centuries to justify their positions, one person making comments can not be used to paint all atheists with the same brush.
Atheism is just a lack of belief in any gods. It does not automatically follow that a lack of belief causes any other belief, such as white supremacy, since there is no proof of any supremacy to begin with. Science shows we are all equally human.
But believers such as yourself seem to think foolish things like white supremacy is spelled out in the Bible, at least for some of you anyway.
We all use moral relativism to function as members of human society. How do you explain all the nice atheists, George?
Or do you think all morals come from your Bible and nowhere else?

The Bible tells us that no one will enter the Kingdom of God except through Jesus. It is quite clear. That's not me. And it's not hate. I feel sorry for those who are brought to Jesus but reject Him.

@George.. so why the const.itutional commandments to ban them?

Besides.. have you read your bible in its entirety? including the books/verses that were banned from KJV by mortal politicians and kings? Those books could hold a lot of truth that contradicts your belief too.. Ever considered that?

      >>>>Answer: A perfect example of someone who not only lives and breathes in hate "

Wait is this the same Answer that said a few days ago he lived to destroy religion and the "kind" of folks who are of Religion. Isn't this the same Answer that I do believe said there was no room for tolerance?

Sounds like you have a new playmate Answer. Maybe y'all can meet some where in one of great lakes and settle it.

Marks, remember what the bible says: "judge not lest god cr@p all over you too."

Watch your judgemental step there. The big guy can output some pretty big coilers.

Hi Jane. It is not judging Answer. His statements were filled with pure anger and ended with a call for destruction of that which believes differently. The judging part would be possible if I had power over Answer, such as if I were his boss.

There comes a time when a segment or group of society has to be challenged when it makes such remarks. That goes for the Klan man that wants all blacks destroyed, to the Westburo pastor that wants Gays and Lesbians destroyed , to te Atheist that calls for all of religion and the "kind" that are religious destroyed.

Marks from Middle River, there is a huge difference between wanting to destroy people and wanting to destroy myths. I don't know any atheist that wants to destroy people.

Hi Ace. I agree but I felt there was a point that Answer's comments went to the point of destroying people. The part of the statement where it was the destroy religion and then those in “kind”. It is then when I had to challenge him because he “peeked” out and decided that I had to say something.

Ace, the same guy that “called out George and said :

“A perfect example of someone(George) who not only lives and breathes in hate is you.”

Ace he also said back at the Hitchen's memorial thread:

“Anything related to it I will destroy it. You may not like it – in my approach and that's for you to care.I simply do not care to consider your kind's emotional tie to it. ”

You see this is why I love listening to the extremes of any group because they all... no matter what they points...they begin to sound like each other. Its just hilarious that one person that calls another hateful thinks us to have short memory that he wanted to go around destroying this and not caring. You know, how many folks have faced the fire of a gun, the end of a noose or just the tracks of a tank by folks that make such statements as Answer?

Ace, I also posed a sorta statement towards Answer that he failed to respond to. I checked tonight and he still has not.

'”The thing about it Answer is that I am not going to let what happened to the Jews happen to you and your family because you are Atheist, without taking a stand. In the same way I would hope you would do the same if it were the Faithful getting lined up for the box cars. “

See for me this is the battle, to no matter how much folks disagree that we have folks that take a stand and say that the horrors of the past will not happen again.
