Fox apologizes to Jews for poll on who murdered Jesus

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Fox Latin America has pulled and apologized for an online poll that asked who was responsible for Jesus’ death and included Jews as a possible response.

The poll had been posted on a Facebook page for National Geographic Cable TV in Latin America as part of a promotional effort for a Christmas special on the channel, according to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish group.

The National Geographic Channel in Latin America is a member of Fox International Channels, part of News Corp.

“Christmas Special is coming to Nat Geo… Who do you think responsible for the death of Jesus?” the Spanish-language poll asked, according to the Wiesenthal Center.

The multiple-choice responses were “Pontius Pilate; The Jewish People; the High Priests.”

On Wednesday, the Wiesenthal Center announced that the National Geographic Channel in Latin America had removed the poll and apologized for it.

"We sincerely apologize for the publication of a poll on our website that might have unintentionally given place to interpretations, opinions or expressions of intolerance that might affect the Jewish community," Fox Latin America’s vice president for corporate communications and PR said in a statement.

“This would contradict the mission and spirit of National Geographic worldwide, which focuses on education for diversity through shows questioning our world,” said the vice president, Guadalupe Lucero.

"We have also taken appropriate measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” he said.

Neither Jews or Romans killed Christ – politics and power did the dirty deed. Get in their way and you're a target.

You are right. He was a threat to Roman authority and the Jewish religious leaders were jealous of Him. Throw in a crowd, that like all crowds are easily stirred up, and walla: an innocent man dies. But his death exemplifies many of His teachings, such as turning the other cheek. And for the Jewish people, His death served the symbolic function of the sacrificial lamb.
Many think His power was in death and resurrection, but He showed His greatest love by teaching us the true nature of His Father and by teaching (and showing) us how to live.

No matter who was literally responsible for His death, the great thing is that all a person needs to do is to seek Him, as He said, "Seek, and you shall find". It is a promise. If you truly wish to find Him you will, and a whole new world will open up to you, It may not be an easy world, but a world expanding exponentially, dimensionally, in a way that is comparable to the difference between animal and human existence.

What about all of those people living on continents far away from the so-called holy land for the last 2000 years who never even heard of jesus? According to the rules of the bible, they all went to hell simply because of where they were born. That seems a little rude and arbitrary.

No thanks, the whole thing is morally repulsive to the extreme.

@ James PDX Where did you get that. Christ never condemned anyone. If fact, he said "He who is without sin cast the first stone."

If the Jews as a race killed Jesus...then Jesus techniquely comitted suicide I suppose.

There is too much hatredt in this world caused by Christianity for us to still be having this argument 2000 years after the event.

Jews DID get Jesus killed..... EVERYBODY knows that!!!! But let's make believe they had nothing to do with it and ignore history and keep funneling billions of dollars to Israel...?!?

    December 30, 2011 at 7:53 pm |
    • TruthandBeauty

But who is to blame? Christians believe that it was necessary and part of a devine plan and was going to happen no matter what. Whoever killed him really didn't have any choice apparently.

Jesus wasn't the only messiah at the time crucified. Jesus knew all his closest disciples were going to betray him, and Judas was his closest one. In reality, Judas was his enabler. Yeshua would never have become Jesus, without the help of Judas. Since he was supposedly all knowing and omnipotent, he knew exactly what everyone's role was to become! Besides, Christians have killed millions of Jews since then, over a 1600 year period!

      December 30, 2011 at 8:02 pm |
    • AngryAtGov1

So they killed one of their own.

    • Floyd

Yeah... let's just assume for a moment that you believe that there was such a person. Then let's assume that you believe the he "died for your sins." Wouldn't that make his death sort of imperative? So you should thank the Jews (or whatever) for making your god a martyr. Otherwise you'd have nothing to worship.

the ones who found him guilty, the ones who told them to arrest him, the ones who didnt ask for him to be released, the ones whose actions led to the need to crusify people to settle the populous down....any amount of people to blame....whats the point..he died, he started a religion, wether he existed or not is a question in itself.

Dont ask who killed him, but ask are we ever likely to become the people who would do that again?.

If we are then we learnt nothing from the fact or the parable...and we havnt moved a minute step forward in our so called civilisation or advanced culture or society

Boy, Mel Gibson should join FOX! Regarding all the remarks pointing to the Jews killing Jesus. This non sense served the church well for almost 2000 years. Jesus wasn't the only messiah at the time crucified. It was said, there was hardly a tree standing in Jerusalem because so many were cut down for Crucifixions! But, Jesus was a Jew as were his disciples! Because they all had Jewish mothers, bloodline! The rest were not!

Apparently, Fox Latin America has never read John 10:18; Jesus covered this already. "No man takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of My Father."

Jesus willingly lay His life down, no man took it from Him.

I've never seen a worse poll. Ever. And FOX really showed its lack of biblical knowledge iwth the multiple choice responses
