Fox apologizes to Jews for poll on who murdered Jesus

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Fox Latin America has pulled and apologized for an online poll that asked who was responsible for Jesus’ death and included Jews as a possible response.

The poll had been posted on a Facebook page for National Geographic Cable TV in Latin America as part of a promotional effort for a Christmas special on the channel, according to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish group.

The National Geographic Channel in Latin America is a member of Fox International Channels, part of News Corp.

“Christmas Special is coming to Nat Geo… Who do you think responsible for the death of Jesus?” the Spanish-language poll asked, according to the Wiesenthal Center.

The multiple-choice responses were “Pontius Pilate; The Jewish People; the High Priests.”

On Wednesday, the Wiesenthal Center announced that the National Geographic Channel in Latin America had removed the poll and apologized for it.

"We sincerely apologize for the publication of a poll on our website that might have unintentionally given place to interpretations, opinions or expressions of intolerance that might affect the Jewish community," Fox Latin America’s vice president for corporate communications and PR said in a statement.

“This would contradict the mission and spirit of National Geographic worldwide, which focuses on education for diversity through shows questioning our world,” said the vice president, Guadalupe Lucero.

"We have also taken appropriate measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” he said.

Question: Isn't it said often by Christians that Jesus died so that their sins might be forgiven? So if Jews are responsible for Christ's death, and also Christ himself was a Jew, so shouldn't Christians be thanking the Jews? Without the Jews, the Christians would have no savior. Think about it. Not to mention without the Jews, the Christians would have much less of a bible too.

Why is it that the Jews are always offended. Athiests and Jews are contantly offending Christians and we are supposed to turn teh other cheek. But we need to tip toe around them. I am sick of it. People you better wake up.

@Grlgenius I think that could go both ways really, I've seen enough examples of Christians making offensive and disparaging remarks to ppl of other faiths unfortunately.

It is misleading to claim that Christ was a Jew. He was very critical of the way that the Jews were practicing Judaism during his lifetime. They were too caught up in dietary restrictions and washing rituals to comprehend Christ's Spiritual message. Christ emphasizes the Spiritual aspect of the Law and not the superficial practices.

Was God one of the options? Wasn't that all part of the big plan, to have Jesus die as a sacrifice for everyone's sins? From this perspective, the Jews were just doing what was pre-ordained.... if you believe in all that.

Why is anyone surprised at Fox News? They are the right wing assassination squad. They love their country just not most of the people who live in it. That would include" poor, blacks, gays, elderly, students, immigrants and unfortunately the middle class. I will never understand why Fox News watchers vote against their own best interests. The only explanation is ignorance and knowledge of the big picture. These people should watch other channels and read newspapers to find out what is really happening . Any Fox News watcher should be embarrassed by the Farleigh-Dickinson poll showing Fox News watchers know less than people who don't even watch the news. They are not embarrassed because their favorite movie is " Idiocracy" and their favorite news channel is Heehaw.

In some sense, nobody ultimately killed Jesus. He's alive and well, Oh that stone has been rolled away! He overwhelmed the grave such that those who believe in him shall inherit eternal life. He is high and lifted up.

Ask the Pope. He would disagree with you. Strongly. Read Vatican II before you spout ignorant rubbish.

In Numbers 31-1-47, Moses, following God's command to punish the Midianites, ordered his troups to kill all men, women (Including pregnant ones), children, elderly people, new born babies BUT specifically told them to spare the virgin girls/young women for themselves and for the priests' enjoyment. And there are more than 1000 (Yes, thousand) similar instances in the Bible. Please don't let the priests/preachers "interpret" the Bible for you. You are smart enough to read it for yourself. Make a commitment to read the whole Bible cover to cover at least once in your lifetime and set yourself free.

There may be 1000 instances of killings but not the picture you are attemting to present. The verses you mentioned deal with a harsh nomatic tribe that attacked the chosen ones previously. You present your personal wicked soul in suggesting the young girls were kept for the enjoyment of the priests. What you have stated here is wrong and offensive. If these are your thoughts then you are in bondage to serious $exual sin and should seek help.

Pontius Pilate, Jews, Priests, believers or non believers could do nothing if not allowed by God. Just as all people of different walks showed their real heart and soul on that day we do so now and God continues to allow it. Just as the Bible is a story of people created by God and being redeemed by God so too is our life story one of redemption by God or our rejection of God. Interesting the truth is before us each day yet we fail to realize we are in that story of redemption. That is why it is the Living Word of God with Divine power to change lives.

The bible is a fairytale book written by a bunch of old men, revised umpteen times,
A better question would be: who killed little red ridin' hood?

What a sad commentary on a so-called news channel! What they'll do to garner more watchers from the religious-right wing is anybody's guess. Fair and Balanced they say...this bunch of religious zealots is comparable in many ways to the same zealotry found in the Islamists – who they routinely castigate on their programs. The problem isn't religious beliefs per se, it's the zealotry, the fanatics, who can't seperate "faith" from everyday living and manage to interacting with others on a civil level. Why does every story, every issue have to be couched in para-religious terms and parameters. Faux news is more like it!

Is there controversy here? The jews killed jesus. They manipulated the Roman state into doing their dirty work (kinda like the way they manipulate the US to do their dirty work in the Middle East.). As for the "high priests', well obviously those were jews.

If the Christ of the bible appeared today he would be murdered so quickly by any and all Christian churches no one would know he had returned. There is no profit in it for them to have some Jewish socialist hippy healing their sick and feeding their hungry and throwing the money changers out of their new temples. No sir, he would not last a day.

And what rock did you just crawl out from under? If you want to believe in ancient myths and libels, go ahead. The rest of us left that behind. And guess what: Vatican II (and just about every intelligent and thinking Christian theologist) would disagree with you.

But if you are looking for an excuse to hate, just go back to your bookshelf and pull out your copy of Mein Kampf. I'm sure you are very good friends with that book.

jJust to add to the Fox "News" stupidity, and to further show how foolish they are (neither a genius nor Sherlock Holmes will be required) Pontius Pilate didn't kill him; he washed his hands of the matter; the Jews didn't kill him–crucifixion was a Roman execution, and the Jews stoned people; and the High Priests plotted and planned, but the Roman Rule rejected them completely as an authoritative opinion on anything, so it was Roman Law at the time that killed him. A very racist mind created this pole where it has to be a person or people when the killer is really the system of the day. Fox News is a part of that today, so maybe that is why it would blow by them, or they just are really racist south of the border, since the answer is none of the above. And, of course, showing the prejudice in its complete and utter reality; Jesus wasn't murdered, he was executed. Fox News is the ugly one again. Maybe that would be a better question; why is Fox News so iincompetently ugly?

mark o. worrell, your answer was accurate regarding Fox News misunderstanding about the death of Jesus, but you also are guilty of always learning but never coming to a knowledge of the truth. The truth is, mark o. worrell, you killed Jesus. It was your sin, the sin of all mankind for which Jesus willingly went to the cross where God the Father put Him to death to pay the penalty for the sins of His people. Are you yet still in your sins mark o. worrell? Eternity is a long time, perhaps you should consider His claims.
