What happens when candidates called by God drop out?

By Stephen Walsh, CNN

On Wednesday, blogger and sitcom writer Kelly Oxford sent a tweet about the Republican race for the presidency that got a lot of folks asking: Is this God’s idea of a joke?

Oxford, whose Twitter feed was named by TIME magazine one of the 140 best of 2011, wrote, “Cain, Perry, Bachmann all claimed God told them to run for President, and all are out of the race. God is hilarious.”

It’s been reported that Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum have all suggested that God called on them to enter the presidential race.

But here we are: Cain’s out. Bachmann’s out.

After returning to Texas to “reassess” his campaign, Perry announced he’s not throwing in the towel. Judging by his poor showing in the Iowa caucuses and the debates so far, however, many political experts think it’s just a matter of time.

The only one with supposed divine guidance who’s still in the race is Santorum.

So what gives? Did the candidates misread God’s supposed message? Does the defeat of a divinely-inspired candidate necessarily contradict a message from God?

We want to hear form you. What do you think?

As Jon Stewart said, since God told three people to run for the Republican nomination, you have conclude he was ****ing with them.

I try to live a christian life and used to be a catholic. We are trying to get through an election of a Government for the next two to four years. All this God stuff is a wast of time. If there is a god, it gave us a brain to use to determine who should be our Government. Lets all just use that brain, listen to the candidates stated plans (not all the BS), determine who we can best trust and pull the lever without gods help. It has enough to worry about and doesn't want us to use or abuse him, her or it.

I guess it just goes to show that either they were lieing about their god calling them or they really don't believe in their god. Poor Republicans sure have a lot of problems don't they?

atheists don't clutter their heads with made up nonsense. we can find moral priniciples without needing them written in a bible. it is truly ridiculous how religion infilitrates politics in America.

"it is truly ridiculous how religion infilitrates politics in America."

Guess you feel our whole system is flawed then. You know...with all these freedoms we have to believe as we see fit. Heck..as you see fit even.

Plainly put...the atheists have failed to get their point across...they have failed to win the argument. But they are more than welcome to believe (or not believe) as they see fit.

If you hold to the viewpoint that God is limited in power or ability it is reasonable to think that he does not or could not care about individual people. I didn't read that any of the candidates said that God told them that they would win. What if running the race was preparation for another season or another challenge in the future, a kind of unpleasant method of being refined by the fire of lifes trials?

Yeah, joco, not many people can keep up with all that regular animal sacrificing that god commands them to do because he loves the stench of burning flesh. And you don't even get to eat the meat; it's a total waste of innocent animals. And your Jesus said those OT laws stll apply, so don't try to wriggle out with that old excuse. 12. Steve

Well, first off, isn't it funny that people can pray to god and he'll let them win football games. People including small innocent children can pray to god as their airliner heads for the ground and nothing happens...except a terrible death. Oh, and there's the Pope. He tells people to reproduce like rabbits so that children can starve to death. The Pope is more of a mass murderer than Adolf ever thought about being.

    January 5, 2012 at 3:16 pm |
    • John Paul II

hi Steve, this is the former pope, I told nobody to reproduce like a rabbit you prat.

Interesting how incredibly tolerant the liberals/athiests/nonbelievers are isn't it?

      January 5, 2012 at 3:25 pm |
    • Fookin' Prawn

Well, 'John Paul' – can I call you John? – there was a lot of encouragement to go forth and multiply to make sure Catholics became as numerous as possible. It's ok if your memory is a little rusty, since you've been gone a while.
p.s. I don't think the Pope ever used Brit slang like 'prat'.

hey @Jesuslives. You do realize that a lot more people lived and died on Earth before Christ than since? So in your Heaven, Christians will be a tiny minority amongst masses of believers in other gods. I hope you are looking forward to that and of course it's communistic equality nature.

I'm not sure your numbers are correct about more being alive prior to the year 1 AD than have lived since then. For most of human history we were small bands of hunter gatherers. Within the last 2 hundred years we went from under a billion to close to 7 billion today. Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population_estimates

Seeing as there is almost certainly no afterlife, minority representation is not something I spend a lot of time worrying about.

Actually, according to my Bible, carefully kept and read often since 1953, we are all god's children. It's you JL, being judgmental above your station, who has most to lose by the blasphemy of self-righteousness. I'm just using my god-given brain to ask awkward questions, that people like you manage to instantly to forget were even asked. And deduce a few clearly problematic answers that only seem to make you angry (demon-like).

      January 5, 2012 at 3:23 pm |

"blasphemy of self-righteousness" I just actually read the word, I'm not defending me, I'm defending God truth. He said to love the truth and be either hot or cold. Seems you're lukewarm.

      January 5, 2012 at 3:11 pm |
    • OhPlz

"thinking you can be like god is what got satan ejected!"

No, your god created satan knowing he would be ejected so then your god could use that as a way to control you through fear of burning in your gods hell. Remember your god created everything including the hell he burns innocent people that don't love him. That's a tyrant and a monster, not a god.

      January 5, 2012 at 3:13 pm |
    • JesusLives

no having the arrogance to think you can rise above your creator and belittle Him verbally. Keep it up and you'll meet Satan face to face and you can boast to him of your brilliance.

      January 5, 2012 at 3:15 pm |
    • James - St Petersburg FL

The Christian God is far from "all loving". Doesn't he send all the non-believers into a pit of fire to burn for eternity? I didn't know that warm-fuzzy feeling came from the flames of hell!

Your god claims both omnipotence and omniscience. Thus your god new – before he even created the universe – that he would create Lucifer, and that Lucifer would become evil. Yet, your god, knowing this, went ahead and created him anyway.

In retrospect, this is seen as a bad idea.

      January 5, 2012 at 3:33 pm |
    • OhPlz

"it up and you'll meet Satan face to face and you can boast to him of your brilliance."

You have no proof satan exists or your hell. Now be a good boy and realize your god created satan and hell to control you in fear, that is a monster not a loving god. 😉

If you are a man of God, your position would be to encourage and not take sides. I see you made a statement about the President being an illegal.

  16. o.k.

I don't know if God called them to run or not...doesn't concern me much on way or the other. If He did call them to run, however, could it not be possible that His purpose was not that they would win, but rather that they would influence the debate, or for some other reason. If you believe God exists, and that he calls people to do certain things, we shouldn't assume that we know the reason why.

An example of a real prophet is Joseph Smith. He gave us the word of wisdom on February 27, 1833 and said that tobacco, alcohol, coffee and tea are not for man. This was about 150 years before modern science even had a clue.
