What happens when candidates called by God drop out?

By Stephen Walsh, CNN

On Wednesday, blogger and sitcom writer Kelly Oxford sent a tweet about the Republican race for the presidency that got a lot of folks asking: Is this God’s idea of a joke?

Oxford, whose Twitter feed was named by TIME magazine one of the 140 best of 2011, wrote, “Cain, Perry, Bachmann all claimed God told them to run for President, and all are out of the race. God is hilarious.”

It’s been reported that Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum have all suggested that God called on them to enter the presidential race.

But here we are: Cain’s out. Bachmann’s out.

After returning to Texas to “reassess” his campaign, Perry announced he’s not throwing in the towel. Judging by his poor showing in the Iowa caucuses and the debates so far, however, many political experts think it’s just a matter of time.

The only one with supposed divine guidance who’s still in the race is Santorum.

So what gives? Did the candidates misread God’s supposed message? Does the defeat of a divinely-inspired candidate necessarily contradict a message from God?

We want to hear form you. What do you think?

I say let Tim Tebow be president. He's not ashamed of God or afraid of criticism for praying to Him.

Hopefully he'll be a better Prez than he is a QB. Last in the NF l in passing.

Your article is pure blasphemy and nonsense. It is obvious that you know nothing about the things of God and how God works. I am not even going to entertain the idea that God "called" any of those men to be president because that too is questionable, but to poke fun at this is tasteless. I sense that you would never speak about the Muslim deity the way you talked about God in your little article. Be a real journalist: interview the candidates and ask them why the came to the conclusion that God called them to run for president. Perhaps you should also ask them about how they know when God speaks to them. Well, you're the journalist, do your job instead reporting on unfounded things of which you may not be well versed in.

Perhaps God did want them to enter the presidential race and they fulfilled that part of what they felt God wanted them to do. None of them to my knowledge said "God told me I will be elected the next president". That would be different. It is sad how angry some of the comments are here – why the angry tone?

I guess now that god speaks so often, it is more likely mistakes are made. Heck I understand that he even tells single Christians to signup for a dating service that they have to pay for. But than Christianity has been commercialized and politicized for ages.

When God call some one to do something , it doesn't mean that everything is going to be smooth . God Called Moses to deliver the people from Egypt and still theyhad to face the red sea and many obstacles. God send John the Baptist to prepare the way for HIS son Jesus, but he was beheaded ! God called apostel paul at the gate of the city of damascus but the mission was full of trials and struggles ! Some times , God calls some one to jump into something to make an awareness and and I believe , all these peole ( Cain, Bachman etc) has done their part . Created the awareness , and ignited the enthusiasm that will eventually help the Republican Nominee !! God Calls not only to win but also to make his name known !

Moses had a rebellion on his hand, I am sure he went up the mountain with a hammer and chisel. For how long? depends on if he found sandstone or granite.

If God did indeed call them to throw their names into the ring, then God did it as a hilarious joke, or as an example of exactly what we should _not_ be voting for.

Without regard to whether or not there is a "God", if there is, he clearly isn't speaking to them. They're either delusional, or flat out liars.

Oh wait, they're politicians, so they must be both.

If there was a god (or just one), do you think he or they would care about politics or humans? And exactly what kind of god is so pretentious that they would reward people who praise him? Leave the first century science in the past. Get god and religion out of politics and get with the 21st century. Evolve...

People who say they talk to god are religious. People who say god talks to them are delusional. And the truly scary ones in this case are not the ones who are just using it to sway rabidly religious voters, but rather those who are dead serious.

I think the really difficult conclusion for anyone to draw is that there is no God. That we are all alone on this ball of dirt. I think those that believe in a God unconditionally are the ones who are actually taking the easy way out. It's a lot easier to believe that when our lives end we accend to heaven and hang out with all our loved ones again. It is a nice thought though, isn't it?
