I believe people have a natural longing to seek God but fear judgement so they do not seek Him. God on the other hand is seeking for all people to know him in faith through his son Jesus. The CNN writer of the question " Why is religion so big in American politics asks a foggy question. Christ believers are actually opposed to religion, as was Jesus because it is of man. Jesus said you must be born again. That means born of the Spirit of God through belief in Christ "the anointed one". About 35% of Americans say they are Christians but only a fraction have true faith in birth death and reserection of Christ. So, many are considered religious but are not, they only believe in the Word of God, the Bible, and have the Holy Spirit in them which pulls them away from religion. To further complicate things many are religious but do not believe in Christ in their heart, they are usually religious and they go to church a lot. Only God actually knows who is born again and they actually cant be considered religious. The writer of the question does not understand the difference between being religions and having faith in God through Jesus. It makes a big difference in Gods world which is some the question writer obviously can not comprehend because it is spiritually discerned.

Are we here talking about the past or the present? At the past that was natural but now it is some thing else say nearly like gathering for the crusaders all over again?

    January 21, 2012 at 6:45 pm |
    • Da King

The crusaders were fighting a war of man by man in the natural world. God is fighting a war of faith in the spirit world.

  9. Kebos

Religion is big in the USA because so many people would rather not think for themselves on topics more sophisticated than the latest episode of "Jersey Shore" or the babble that Fox News serves up.

And politicians, recognizing that America has so many mindless zombies willing to believe that a higher power guides everything from who they marry to what they eat for breakfast, use this game of mind control to sway these gullible voters over to their cause. It really is quite pathetic but effective.

Until America grows up and stops believing in the big man in the sky, politicians will use this as their most effective means to win votes. "God has chosen me......I pray 20 times a day......vote for me"

Whack jobs, the whole lot of them.

    January 21, 2012 at 2:57 pm |
    • freddy

Kebos, for someone who thinks there is no higher power to believe in, you spend an lot of time on the belief blog.

I never said he or shouldn't. I was mere making an observation to the fact that they spend a lot of time reading about belief when they themselves claim not to believe in a higher power. Ironic would be a good word.

    • What IF

      freddy,

These beliefs and the believers have a large social and political effect on all of our lives. We don't spend time on the "Belief in Alien Abduction" or the "Belief in Invisible Pink Unicorns" blogs.

      January 21, 2012 at 5:36 pm |
    • freddy

Good point about beliefs having major effects on our lives. Yet Kebos refers to religion as a belief in a " big man in the sky", which in my opinion is on the same level as invisible pink unicorns or Santa Clause. But I don't think Kebos would spend time trying to ridicule the people that do believe in Santa Clause....maybe he would.

  10. Carlito Swagger

I'm a Christian, so would I vote for an atheist president? Well, I wouldn't bluntly say no because he doesn't believe there's a God, but I would investigate his character and arrogance. I mean if he/she doesn't believe a higher power blessed them with the position of presidency, and believe they did it all on their own then that has to produce some great pride.

    January 21, 2012 at 2:21 pm |
    • Kebos

No higher blessed anyone running for President of the US. To think otherwise demeans the vastness of such a higher power.

      January 21, 2012 at 2:50 pm |
    • Jake

This is a ridiculous statement. What could be more arrogant than thinking God wants you to be President. Talk about foolish pride...

      January 21, 2012 at 2:55 pm |
    • Bizarre

      Kebo,

Yes, they might as well say, "Jesus endorses Birkenstocks or Rapala fishing lures"... and everyone knows that "In and Out" burgers and "Chick-fil-A" are better for you because of the Christian Bible quotes!

      January 21, 2012 at 2:58 pm |
    • One one

All of the GOP candidates claim they were called upon by god to run. Four have dropped out. Are they disobeying god? Or, did god tap them on the shoulder and say its time to quit? Newt has had 3 religions. Each one served a political purpose.

      January 21, 2012 at 4:38 pm |
    • Da King

Carlito, it seems to me that if you were a Christian you would want the President to know and practice the will of God. An atheist would have no discernment of the will of God. Would you want a blind cab driver?

      January 21, 2012 at 10:51 pm |
    • wjs7442

I take exception to your implication that atheists are arrogant. It seems far more arrogant to judge others who don't hold your unjustified (rationally) belief in the Christian god. Or any other, for that matter.

How about voting for an agnostic president, though? That seems to be the least arrogant position, for one to honestly state that one does not know if a deity exists. Really, no one truly _knows_, although many believe one way or the other.

      January 22, 2012 at 4:17 am |

  14. ALBERT

Albert Einstein: God is a Product of Human Weakness
The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.

if this being is omnipotent, then every occurrence, including every human action, every human thought, and every human feeling and aspiration is also His work; how is it possible to think of holding men responsible for their deeds and thoughts before such an almighty Being? In giving out punishment and rewards He would to a certain extent be passing judgment on Himself. How can this be combined with the goodness and righteousness ascribed to Him?

Why religion will not be so big in ten to twenty years:

    (only for the "newbies")

Recognizing the flaws, follies and frauds in the foundations of Islam, Judaism and Christianity, the "bowers", kneelers" and "pew peasants" are converging these religions into some simple rules of life. No koran, bible, clerics, nuns, monks, imams, evangelicals, ayatollahs, rabbis, professors of religion or priests needed or desired.

Ditto for houses of "worthless worship" aka mosques, churches, basilicas, cathedrals, temples and synagogues.

      (only for the "newbies)

Free Will and Future are inherent to all the thinking beings in the Universe. This being the case, it is not possible to alter life with prayers. Statistically, your request might come true but it is simply the result of the variability/randomness of Nature..

So put down your rosaries and prayer beads and stop worshiping/revering cows or bowing to Mecca five times a day. Instead work hard at your job, take care of aging parents, volunteer at a soup kitchen, donate to charities and the poor and continue to follow the proper rules of your religion or any good rules of living as gracious and good human beings.

That was and is the purpose of religion... a tool to control the masses....notice each year the Religious party gets more and more Christian religious.. it is a formula that Bush used to get elected and they all just on the band wagon and use the same method.. it is not about being righteous, its about being elected... to get the job, money and power the job gives the winner.
The mythic-ly gullible are being used and are so sheep-headed they don't even realize it. All the candidates have to do is speak the god talk and they get followed... like the pied piper...
