Passing significant test, Gingrich wins more S.C. evangelicals than rivals

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com

(CNN) - If there were any doubts that Newt Gingrich, a thrice-married convert to Catholicism, could connect with the evangelical voters who make up the Republican Party base, Saturday’s South Carolina primary put them to rest, with the former House Speaker winning twice as many evangelical votes as anyone else in the race.

Evangelical Christians made up two-thirds of the South Carolina electorate on Saturday, and Gingrich took 44% of their votes, according to CNN’s exit poll.

Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum, who rode evangelical support to victory in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses earlier this month, each got 21% of the evangelical vote in South Carolina.

Gingrich got roughly the same share of the South Carolina evangelical vote as Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist preacher, did four years ago.

The former House speaker campaigned vigorously among evangelicals in the Palmetto State, talking about “values” issues and speaking to and holding conference calls with hundreds of evangelical pastors.

“Whatever his personal values may be, he certainly talked effectively and cogently to the kinds of issues that evangelicals care about,” said John Green, an expert in religion and politics at the University of Akron.

“Gingrich had a very intensive campaign mentioning social issues, less as policy matter than as test of the broader ideology of candidates,” Green said.

An accusation last week from Gingrich’s second wife that he asked for an “open marriage” raised questions about how much so-called “values voters” would support him.

“To a degree, it will give [evangelical voters] pause, but there’s a much more insatiable appetite to defeat President Obama,” said David Brody, chief political correspondent at CBN News at the Christian Broadcasting Network.

“Gingrich has never claimed to be a patron saint,” Brody said. “People have known for years about Gingrich’s marriage issues. In a way, his well-known history of troubled marriage works for him here.”

Last weekend, a group of conservative Christian leaders – evangelicals, mostly – reached consensus around supporting Santorum, but many experts said the development came to late to seriously influence the race.

Evangelical does not equal Christian. Read your Bible. These people are far removed from anything the Bible teaches. In fact if Jesus were on earth today they would have him killed just like the religious leaders from Bible times had him killed. These people are evil.

Unblinking Horse with Tongue Sticking Out, you posted "Hi Albert, Since God created everything I guess it is ok for them to be evil so no worries."

Answer: God gave all free will. It is man (meaning women too) that causes evil. God allows it to play out because God is long suffering and wants all His children to turn their backs on the evil ways (man made) of this world.

      Amen.

You can not separate a man from his character. What a man is doing in his private life, and whether he is adhering to standards of what is right and just, oar allowing himself to indulge to please his carnal nature , it does define his character. se/x and greed for money and power are to major driving forces that define degenerate human nature. This man has already defined himself, by both of them!
There is a mystery which is a great puzzle to those of us who are "outsiders"(although living here for a long time), and have not been steeped in American society to the point that we lack "air to breathe" on our own.... Why is it that the people or this country adhere to the two dead beat parties, that have been so corrupted to the point of no redemption...?a Don't the people of this county know that once corruption takes over so much , it's impossible to restore, and it must start anew? The bottom line is, if people of this country will bounce back and forth between the two existing parties, there is no hope for recovery of it. American people are, and I'm sorry to say it, dumb sheep being fed crap from every side, and not knowing that they are being lead by the nose by slick tongued politicians who don't give a rip about the people, but only for their place of power and securing their own comforts of life! That goes for the members of both parties! Why can't people of this country organize and refuse to support either one of them, but form another party, PEOPLE's party, which will demand fundamental changes in how this country is run, and what benefits the PEOPLE, not the fat cats of corporate mafia world, that are bedded in with present politicians? ! But it just shows how far the deterioration has set in and how people have become numb to it!!!

The one thing you have to keep in mind about southern evangelicals is that most of them have the same opinion of marriage as Gingrich. They see no wrong in the constant procession of marriage...divorce...marriage. They would like for the rest of the nation to believe otherwise but I grew up there and left years ago. Southern evangelicals are big on worshiping at the "alter of hypocrisy" however. It is so "over practiced there that it has lead to the tolerance of the type of deceit and destructive behavior seen in the Gingrich's of the world. So no big surprise he won in SC and no doubt he will in Florida.

Matthew 7:17 "Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit." and 21 ""Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven." Enough said.

As for "enough said", the less said from that horrid book known as the bible, the bettter. But to be fair to the contents, you should get into the crazy stuff in Leviticus too. So get on to your daily god sacfifice, as god commands you to. It says in Matthew that all the OT laws still apply, so don't try that slimy dodge either. Note that the bible is very explicit on this sacrifice. You should sacrifice and burn an animal because the smell makes sicko Christian god happy. No, you don't get to use the parts for food. You burn them, a complete waste of the poor animal.

Yes, the bible really says that, everyone. Yes, it's in Leviticus, look it up. Yes, Jesus purportedly said that the OT commands still apply. No exceptions. But even if you think the OT was god's mistaken first go around, you have to ask why a perfect, loving enti-ty would ever put such horrid instructions in there. If you think rationally at all, that is.

So get out your sacrificial knife or your nasty sky creature will torture you eternally. Or just take a closer look at your foolish supersti-tions, understand that they are just silly, and toss them into the dustbin with all the rest of the gods that man has created.

Hmm..where was all the discretion and and off limits topics, when he was spilling Clinton's infidelity all over the news..WHILE HE WAS CHEATING ON HIS WIFE.......LOL. This is why we need separation of church and state. They'll never think with both sides of their brains and we'll get stuck with someone else like Bush II who'll leave us with another financial disaster and blame someone else for it.

As a Christian I think churches that politicize need to have their tax-exempt status revoked immediately if not sooner and people who confuse the two should sit down and shut up.

There are plenty of Biblical references for this but they all ignore them because they're unpopular, along with the ones that tell us to take care of the poor and the hungry. Those are being ignored by the GOP and the Tea Party, too.

      Here's the best one:

      Matthew 7:5
'You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brothers.'

They none of them ever quote that passage because it tells us to mind our own business before we pay any attention to anyone else's business.

What that means is that *God* forgives them. It doesn't mean that *we* shouldn't look at a man's behaviour and realise he has a pattern that he repeats over and over again and that he will likely do it again, especially when it comes to politics.

Are you putting yourself above God? YOU have nothing to forgive him for, Fathom1. He never wronged you. Newt has a pattern: he wronged Congress, he wronged 2 wives, he wronged his children. You Right-Wingers who claim to be a party of Family Values, you can forgive and forget (when it comes to the GOP, that is, what does that tell you about your own forgiveness? that it's conditional and hypocritical according to the Bible and God), true, but this man is like the snake in the fable. Don't know the story?

Once upon a time a Lady was walking by a river on a winter day. She heard a cry and she looked down to see a poor half-frozen Coral snake.

'Help me, please! I'm dying of cold and starvation,' cried the snake.

She looked upon the beautiful snake with pity. His colours were bright and he was the most beautiful Coral snake she had ever seen, but she knew his bite was death to all.

'I can see you are in trouble,' she said kindly, 'But if I help you, you could hurt me. I fear your bite could kill me. Do you promise not to hurt me?'

The snake was desperate. 'Of course I won't hurt you, pick me up, warm me, feed me and I promise not to harm you. I will be as the gentle lamb or the gamboling kitten,' he promised.

The Lady was soothed by the promise of the snake. Tender hearted toward all living things, she picked up the poor half-dead thing and wrapped him in her shawl. She carried him to her home and placed him near the fire. She brought him warm milk and fresh meat. Soon warmed, lapping at the milk (shut up, it's a fable) and eating of the meat, the snake was restored to health.

His colours grew brighter and he drew himself up displaying his great beauty. Unable to resist him the Lady began to stroke him and the Coral snake bit her finger.

'You have poisoned me! Why, when I did you no harm and restored you to life? I only loved you for your beauty, and now I shall die!'

The snake looked at her coldly as life ebbed from her lovely form.

'Lady, you knew I was a snake when you picked me up.'

Past behaviour informs future behaviour. Forgive, but *remember* when it comes to politicians. Anything else and one is someone who doesn't learn from their mistakes.

Oh, by the way, HS, I showed my husband your post. He has a great laugh–it's sort of a guffaw combined with a cackle. I love it when he reads your posts.

Bizarre, don't apologize. The voices HS hears might not be from God, but it's for sure HS is hearing some sort of 'voices' in that lame brain.

      HS is a nut-job.
