Jewish newspaper’s editor resigns over Obama assassination column

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - A Jewish newspaper owner who attracted U.S. Secret Service attention for a column suggesting that Israel consider assassinating an American president has resigned as the paper’s editor, employees there said Monday.

The resignation comes after a firestorm over the column and after a tearful apology from the editor-in-chief of Georgia’s Atlanta Jewish Times, Andrew Adler.

The JTA reported Monday that Adler is selling the newspaper, but the office manager, Jerry Farkas, said that was incorrect and that Adler hadn’t announced plans to sell.

The paper’s newly named interim editor-in-chief, John McCurdy, said in an e-mail that he had not talked with Adler about whether he planned to sell the paper.

Adler wrote a January 13 column about the threat of Iran to Israel, posing three options for the Jewish state. One was a "hit on a president in order to preserve Israel's existence."

The column attracted interest from the U.S. Secret Service, with spokesman George Ogilvie saying Saturday, "We are aware of it. We are taking the appropriate investigative steps."

In an interview with an Atlanta TV station on Saturday, Adler broke down as he apologized for the column.

“All I could do now is let President Obama, the State of Israel, everybody affected in Atlanta’s Jewish community … (know) that I’m sincerely sorry for what has transpired,” Adler told Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters Inc., straining to choke back tears.

“It’s storming outside as we speak, and I’ve always felt that when a storm happens that God’s angry with me,” Adler said.

Farkas said the paper is working with the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta to find a permanent managing editor.

The federation had said that it was suspending its relationship with the Atlanta Jewish Times until Adler apologized, agreed to stop writing and gave up editorial control.

I guess being Jewish automatically makes this a religious story. For those of you who are using the story to attack Jews, shame on you. Any person who suggests assassinating a U.S. president should be investigated and possibly punished, no matter what his religion or his occupation. Being Jewish – or being a newspaper editor – does not cause this type of behavior, and it does not excuse it.

I think it plays into the broader picture of a certain segment of Jews trying to influence American politics. Apparently their is an Israeli-based super-PAC that's funding support for Mitt Romney and taking a very decided anti-Ron Paul stance... and they're pouring hundreds of millions into advertising.

This should be illegal. Foreign nations should not be able to fund advertising, etc. for the eyes of Americans to influence American elections.

And then now this article about the guy wanting to "off" Presidents to keep funding going to Israel.

You see a pattern begin to emerge within some segments of Jews. And, yes, it's Jews. You don't see Baptists saying "Hey, we need to keep pouring billions of our tax dollars into Israel, and to hell with the poor in America".

Actually, his being Jewish is the whole reason he wrote the story in the first place. A lot of Jews in America feel like Israel comes first, even above the needs of the country they are living in. End all financial aid to Israel NOW. They got nukes, they don't need anything else from the US.

More than 44 years ago I was a GI in the US Army. The guy next bunk was Jewish. Once in a while we used to talk. One day the Jewish guy said that, in case of conflict between Israel and USA, he wouldn't hesitate to join the Israeli Defense Force and kill me, to which I replied that he was a traitor. The guy reported me and said that I had abused him because he was Jewish and called me and the the other guys in the squad anti-semite. I have met many Jewish people in the meantime, and they all seem to think the same way the Jewish soldier. I strongly believe that Adler and many other Jewish boneheads mean what they say when they suggest the possibility to assassinate Mr. Obama to advance Israel's interests, no matter what. And they are quite prepared to raise havoc and cry anti-semitism if anyone dares to disagree with Israeli policies.

This article stands in stark contrast to the Populist notion that Jews love Obama and Israel is happy with his Administration.

Ron Paul is the only candidate who will let Israel put on their big-boy pants and deal with the snotty nations around them all by themselves. Israel is more than capable. Americans should not be funding the nation of Israel. I want my tax dollars to stay in our own backyard.

Everyone is missing the point here. If someone takes Obama out, then we are left with Joe Biden as president. God help the country if that ever comes to pass. Joe never uses one word when thirty thousand will do. There aren't enough trees in the world to make enough paper to print out everything that comes out of his mouth. What is missed in all the (rightful) expression of disgust at this editor's call for violence, is his more disgusting call for even greater violence against a whole nation. It's amazing how encapsulated and detached American thinking has become. Is it alright to advocate war and destruction of another people based on flimsy evidence planted by a terrorist organization? Wasn't international aggression and support for it the supreme crime at the Nuremberg tribunal? His call for political assassination and domestic terrorism are only one of his crimes. His warmongering is even a bigger crime!

Joe Biden would turn Israel in to the worlds largest ashtray if he found out the Mossad assassinated Barack Obama. Now if Eric Cantor was the vice president this would be a true option for Netanyahu. Eric Cantor is a threat to our national security.

I believe Your mistaken about the succession of power.
If a POTUS dies or is otherwise incapacitated to the point of inability, the next in line would be The Speaker of The House,The VPOTUS is and will allways be President of the Senate so that there is stability until such a time as a new POTUS may be elected. I think it has just such a senario mind as the one penned in the at question article.

I tell you what, there where three men of my family in WW2, one of them on the beach on D-Day. He never mentioned how bad it was except once during the movie "The Longest Day" when he pointed at some film footage and said "There's my boat". He started talking about the really crazy dangerous stuff in the 1980s. It took him 40 years to talk about it. He was kept alive another 52 years after WW2 because of Jew doctors, all nice gentlemen. He would have gutted any of you sweet bald tattooed Nazis and I'm sure prison treats you like the women you are. This is not your country this was his country.

Per usual, the actions of ONE Jew is causing an outcry by the anti-Semites against ALL Jews. Every major Jewish organization has condemned these remarks almost as soon as they were uttered. Unfortunately, when you're in a minority, those hateful masses are just too happy to lump every every person together. Jews do NOT want what Adler advocated.

Fact of the matter is folks, the Jews have been out to destroy America for a long time. That's why they own American media. That's why they bought and paid for things like the 14th amendment, so that they could weaken and destroy America's ability to stop them. They have their "Samson Option" with nukes pointed at every major European city. Only white territories though, because whites can stop them.

Jews have been out to destroy America, eh? Is that why in such a small minority in population, they've helped contribute overwhelmingly to the Nobel Peace Prize winners in the world? If the Jews were so intent on "destroying America", what's taking them so long? If the Jews are in such power over the media, why did almost EVERY major media outlet (falsely) claim Israel was completely at fault for the Flotilla Incident? you're grasping at straws, conspiracy theorists.

Jews are and have always been punished for being (Gasp) too successful, and collectively too intelligent. It's jealousy that affects the world's reaction to the Jews overwhelmingly. Jews are not trying to "take over the world". They are just going about their business like EVERYONE else. These rest of you should also resign from your own organizations and join the small German colony in Uruguay where members of the Third Reich have lived since the 1940s trying to teach the natives to goosestep. My guess is that Herr Adler will just get a slap on the wrist. After most people blog about favoritism towards people like him at his trial or lack thereof, the people in power will accuse everyone who complains about his treachery as being anti-Semitic, just as they accuse ordinary, rational individuals who decry Israel's role pushing us into the war in Iraq or Tel Aviv's influence in Washington as the same, as the Senate votes 100-0 to collapse iran's economy, largely for the benefit of (the right wing in) Israel. The old 'just because the majority feels that way doesn't make it right' argument will be made, in the meantime, nobody on tv talks about how large majorities of people everywhere detest Hitler and just did what they were told during the Nazi period because the Gestapo and SS made waterboarding and Guantanamo look like torture-lite.

What would happen to an Arab or Muslim that did the same thing? Absolutely nothing. It wouldn't even be news.
Free speech allows stupid, absolutely incorrect, speculation about what someone else might consider doing. That is all Adler did, obviously stupid, obviously incorrect, but also obviously just speculation, not in any way a threat nor an incitement.
How should the government punish him? Just a slap on the wrist? Absolutely not. There is no crime, so even a slap on the wrist is too much. How should his colleagues punish him? That seems to be well under way. When a journalist says something so stupid it makes all his colleagues look bad, they should refuse to continue to work with him. Wouldn't it be nice if that reaction were more common, rather than reserved for Adler.

I would ask you major malfunction, but it's pretty obvious. Hate is corrosive to the holder.

Nice grammar mistakes, too. Makes you sound like a hard-core "researcher" of the Zionist conspiracy. It's good to know that when I see that alcoholic with a few teeth at the liquor store, this is what he has to look forward to when getting to a keyboard. All you are is white trash. It's all you'll ever be.

Mr. Stormfront you are in no position to tell anyone to leave....thats up to the Native Americans and you would be the first to rebuild the Mayflower and sail back to your ancestral land.

@Cammie Thanks, you beat me to the punch. It's funny how these so called 'white nationalists/white supremacists' have selective memory. @Stormfront....At best, you are a self-loathing degenerate. I realize you have nothing to offer the world but hate and that it is pointless to hope for more from your lot.... but.....still...*sign*.....we hope.

An interesting article, but why has a story about an American citizen recommending that a foreign country assassinate a sitting president of the United States been put in a religion blog rather than in an international or national news section?

      Because he's a k-i-k-e, and anything else is "anti-semitism."
