Jewish newspaper’s editor resigns over Obama assassination column

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - A Jewish newspaper owner who attracted U.S. Secret Service attention for a column suggesting that Israel consider assassinating an American president has resigned as the paper’s editor, employees there said Monday.

The resignation comes after a firestorm over the column and after a tearful apology from the editor-in-chief of Georgia’s Atlanta Jewish Times, Andrew Adler.

The JTA reported Monday that Adler is selling the newspaper, but the office manager, Jerry Farkas, said that was incorrect and that Adler hadn’t announced plans to sell.

The paper’s newly named interim editor-in-chief, John McCurdy, said in an e-mail that he had not talked with Adler about whether he planned to sell the paper.

Adler wrote a January 13 column about the threat of Iran to Israel, posing three options for the Jewish state. One was a "hit on a president in order to preserve Israel's existence."

The column attracted interest from the U.S. Secret Service, with spokesman George Ogilvie saying Saturday, "We are aware of it. We are taking the appropriate investigative steps."

In an interview with an Atlanta TV station on Saturday, Adler broke down as he apologized for the column.

“All I could do now is let President Obama, the State of Israel, everybody affected in Atlanta’s Jewish community … (know) that I’m sincerely sorry for what has transpired,” Adler told Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters Inc., straining to choke back tears.

“It’s storming outside as we speak, and I’ve always felt that when a storm happens that God’s angry with me,” Adler said.

Farkas said the paper is working with the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta to find a permanent managing editor.

The federation had said that it was suspending its relationship with the Atlanta Jewish Times until Adler apologized, agreed to stop writing and gave up editorial control.

Well he's he freaking psycho. But for example the guy who called to kill the South Park creators because of their depicting of Muhammad didn't apologize for anything. And wasn't condemned by Muslim organizations.

Adler is from NY, last time I checked, not a poverty stricken third world shelled out country. I guess when Netanyahu decides to openly commit genocide you can just point to hitler and say, well at least he apologized, hitler didn't.

      @Godoflunaticscreation:
What the hell are you talking about? The guy who explicitly called to kill South Park creators and published their addresses on the Internet is American and he got jailed for this.

Also, while I'm not a fan of Netaniyahu, he didn't commit any "genocide". Funny that you don't mention Hamas – the biggest oppressor of Palestinian people (that is if you care about them).

He was paranoid, and whether or not he stepped over the limits of the First Amendment - I personally believe no such editorial should ever be written, or taken as sane advice - there are responses on this CNN board that are equally paranoid. Adler is not much different from many of you, and that difference is not in kind, but by degree. He speculates about attacks on the President, and some of you speculate about attacks on thousands if not millions of your neighbors. Find out the name of Andrew Adler's tailor, and see if there's a straightjacket in your own size.

Stop making excuses for this creepy man. There are too many Jews in our country with extremist views. In fact, if not for Israel, we would not be having so much trouble in the Middle East. We need real negotiations, not more threats and land stealing. Jews, wake up and do the right thing. Threatening a Good Guy President is about a low as one can get.

  4. Mrs. M

CNN prints and televises unpopular opinions every single day. Nobody seems to care, because the owner of CNN is a supporter of the Obama administration. Here you have a man who owns his own tiny little newspaper, who printed his own unpopular opinion. Sure, it was more than a little bit stupid to publish his opinion, BECAUSE doing so put him squarely in the cross-hairs of the Secret Service. But, I believe it's important for the American public to take note that while HE THOUGHT HE HAD FREEDOM OF SPEECH, the greater issue is that most people fail to understand that freedom of speech does not apply to any perceived threat against a President of the USA, present or former.

    January 24, 2012 at 2:54 am |
    • SummerRain

Actually, threats against ANYONE is NOT protected under freedom of speech. If someone verbally threatens you, much less on a public forum calling for others to take actions upon you, you can take that to the police. You know that rule about how you are not allowed to yell "Fire" in a crowded theater? You can't do that because that can cause harm to someone, and so freedom of speech isn't applicable.

      January 24, 2012 at 4:23 am |
    • Thinker23

Mrs. M... Did Adler actually THREATENED to assassinate the President, in your opinion? I don't think so. He wrote about a POSSIBLE result of such assassination. Are Generals developing war plans in the Pentagon THREATENING the US with a nuclear war? Are we here threatening anyone by talking about possible war with Iran, for example? I don't think so.

    • sarai

What is unbelievable is the audacity of some who try and spin or justify this man's actions. What he has done is inexcusable and an attempt to wave it away as not being a big deal proves just how morally bankcrupt some individuals are.

      January 24, 2012 at 6:48 am |
    • Thinker23

Calling for murder is NOT free speech. Furthermore he was NPT prosecuted.

He showed himself as a Jewish extremist, no better than the Muslim variety.

Deport him and bulldoze his families houses.

His people do that to others, perhaps a little payback is appropriate.

This article underlines my fear that Israel wants a US president who is openly Zionist Jewish sympathizer. What worries me the most is if Newt, an openly Zionist Israel sympathizer, will become president of the United States the Zionist conspiracy will be complete. They run our economy, our congress, and if Newt is elected, our presidency. Our country, the United States of America will become a colony of Israel. What is a colony you might ask? By definition a country or area under the full or partial political control of another country, typically a distant one, and occupied by settlers from.

    January 24, 2012 at 2:32 am |
    • miriam

Of course Israel would want a US president who was Zionist and open about it. There is nothing morally wrong with supporting the right of the Jewish people to have a state on their religious, historical and cultural homeland and nothing wrong with admitting it openly. It is morally wrong that today there are those who are unable to express their support for the Jewish state or it's right to exist because of the fear of attack from those who refuse that right and spread ancient conspiracy dressed up in new clothes.

      January 24, 2012 at 4:43 am |
    • Frank

I have become an anti-Zionist after witnessing the Jews steal Palestinian land for seven decades and conduct fake negotiations. And I have talked with many Americans who feel the same; I suspect there are tens of millions of Americans who wish Israel would just go away. I resent sending billions to affluent Jews when there are so many poor people in our own country.

      January 24, 2012 at 5:24 am |
    • miriam

Frank, you either bare false witness or have your eyes blindfolded. More likely, your ears have been wide open to disinformation and false accusations.

Seven decades ago, 80% of the territory legally allocated for the re-establishment of the Jewish state had been given to the Arabian Hashemites and the remaining land was again up for division between more Arabs and the Jews. The Jews accepted the division, the Arabs did not and proceeded to claim and fight for the possession of the whole territory. They loss their fight and also lost their subsequent attempts to gain land by force.
The fact that Israel won territory in defensive battle is not stealing. It is fully acceptable under International Law.

      January 24, 2012 at 6:28 am |
    • Thinker23

Frank... NO ONE was able to show the legal deeds proving that the "stolen Palestinian lands" belong EXCLUSIVELY to the Arabs... and it ALWAYS were the Arabs who refused to negotiate. As it's always the case with racists your claims are based on LIES.

    • Peikoviany

Frank, the Jews of Palestine were attacked by their Muslim neighbors for thirty years prior to the 1948 war. The leaders of the Muslim majority in Palestine went as far as to recruit Muslims into the Nazi Waffen-SS during WW2. No doubt any group would have rebelled against that Palestinian leadership at the first opportunity, which is just what the Jews of Palestine did. The UN agreed, recognizing the new Jewish-majority sectors as Israel, and the Muslim-majority sectors as Palestine, but Palestine was occupied by the Arab League and taken-apart by Egypt and Jordan. In 60-plus years the Israelis have maintained or improved their own defensive borders because they have not be recognized as a state by Muslim supremacists. What Iran, Syria and Hezbollah did to the Christians of Lebanon is another example if you don't like the Jewish one.

      January 24, 2012 at 12:18 pm |
    • Reality

      Israel-

Its formation was approved by the UN in 1948. It should honor the original UN agreement and live within the described borders. Considering the hate generated by passages in the koran and OT, erecting dividing walls between Muslims and Jews should continue. UN forces should control these walls.

And Jerusalem should be made into an international city under the control and protection of the UN.

      January 24, 2012 at 4:52 pm |
    • octopus

      @Reality:
haha. That's what exactly Israel wanted to do – to honor the agreement. It was Arabs who didn't want the 2-state solution and attacked Israel the next day in 1948 with the officially stated goal to create a single Arab state.

This guy was obviously a nutcase and didn't think very well when he wrote such a column. My guess is that he speaks for many, many Israeli Jews though – and likely many of the orthodox Jews in the US. My country, The United States of America needs to stop giving the predominately Jewish country Israel, my tax dollars. They think God gave them that land. Huh! God didn't give the Jews any such land. Get over yourselves and try living in peace for once and quit treating the Palestinians, in what I would call, an equally abhorrant way that you all profess to have been treated throughout the centuries. Grow up! And play nice in your sand box. Jews seem to think that they are the only people throughout history that has been killed en masse. Ever hear of Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Stallin? How about the Catholic Church....and I was raised Catholic unfortunately. Again, get over yourselves and start thinking about the rest of the world as equally as you think of yourselves....thilly wabbits!

Well said! I am by no means anti-Semitic, but I am tired of Israel. And I am tired of the US government giving them millions of dollars simply because the Jewish lobby is so strong and New York and Florida are important electoral college states. We need to wash our hands of Israel and put any American Jews who support Israel before the US on the first available El Al flight to Tel Aviv and they can live there.

we all know that the US is always ruled by Jews. Rothschild family and Morduch are owner of all western countries and they push western nations to their wars one after another. all presidents are supposed to serve Israel not Americans and if some one like Paul comes to the play he will be ignored by Jews' media.

One thing is quite certain about this incident, unfortunate that it came out from the pen of an old fool who probably didn't know anything better, is the surge of anti-jewish, anti-Israel rhetoric . Why do we always have to condemn a whole race be it Jewish, Arab, races of different color just because of the misdemeanor of one single person ? It's being purely racist and ugly in it's worst composure. There are many Jews who are equally appalled by the insane act of this individual and so why judge them all in the same scale. Not all Jews are out there in a mad spree threatening the US President. I'm not a Jew but I will never evaluate a whole segment of the human race because of one single act perpetrated by a man who should have known better but chose to act inappropriately .

I think this guy is an a&& for expounding such a stupid, idiotic statement; he should have been investigated/arrested on the spot. I cannot begin to imagine how and why he thought saying something so $#%%% was going to go unnoticed.

But what has left me (and I'm sure other jews) is the stream of filth that has been unleashed. It's like Hitler and his minions are suddenly reborn. I'm a 4th generation Canadian, my father fought for Canada in WWII but suddenly I'm not a native, or a real resident of my homeland.

German Jews said 'we are German first, then jewish", but the Nazis didn't see it like that and they ALL went to the camps. Never once, ever in my life did I think "that could happen here". But after seeing what some of these morons have said, in a public forum, I think it could. Suddenly I'm not Canadian, I'm just a jew. And there are quite a few people out there who want to finish off what Hitler started.

Call the hajib cultural or religious, there is no requirement in the Koran that women must wear it.
As far as I can tell, the wearing of the hajib is an issue of modesty.
However, having said that, you are the one who is worried that the hajib, cultural or religious, will become part of Toronto's
street scene and appear to be opposed to seeing it as such.
So, as I said, it is here and you had better learn to live with it as it isn't going away.
As for the Khomeni comment, give me a break. I'm not a Muslim though I am more tolerant than you. Perhaps that is because I have Muslim acquaintances.

There will be no use of making any truthful comment or telling the truth, because, the truth has remained the greatest crime since ancient ages. The people of evil souls and wicked hearts had Crucified, even Jesus Christ, the greatest healer of mankind, for speaking the truth. 11 of 12 apostles of Jesus remained persecuted for speaking the truth? Who had crucified Jesus and who had persecuted all the truthful 11 apostles of Jesus? Who had lured and bought Judas Isacriot, the 12th apostle of Jesus and turned him into a traitor of his Master? I do not see any difference in the mental wickedness of the devil-possessed Muslim terrorists and of those who crucified Jesus, beheaded John, persecuted 11 apostles of Jesus and of the one who holding such a responsible position of a News Paper owner/editir , openly publishing such heinouly hateful words against the elected President of the Nation giving him freedom to publish his Newspaper? There is no doubt that the great majority of the truly God-fearing Jews are one of the best people of the earth planet. But such handful of hateful souls in all the religious community, have always caused bad name and embarrassment to their entire community and peace loving humanity at large. . This also shows how the Cane-minded wicked-souled children of Adam & Eve have remained engaged in fratricidal and self-destruction of their own One Human Family, since the time of Adam & Eve?

That you believe in such fairytales is your business and I leave you to it, however, it is that ridiculous indoctrination that is the main source of the hate and bigotry that has lead people like this editor to his retarded spewings and ultimate demise. FYI, there is no difference in the "mental wickedness of the devil-possessed Muslim terrorists and of those who crucified Jesus, beheaded John, persecuted 11 apostles of Jesus... and blah blah BLAH..." because they are all build on the same fictional belief system. The fiction that compels you to call an entire group pf people 'devil-possessed Muslim terrorists" is the very same fiction that that compelled this idiot to conceive of the assassination of a President to further some agenda. As for Jesusislorf, well good luck, you are clearly lost. But seriously and out of curiosity Gandhian, would your moniker 'Gandhian' be a reference the so called 'Mahatma'. Without Christianity Judaism would be just a quaint religion? Really. Just a reminder, YOU are the offshoot from us.

Without Christianity, we would not have been persecuted for 'killing Jesus', the blood libel, pogroms at Easter (my grandparents liked to tell that one particularly), the Inquisition, and endless streams of priests/missionaries and other clergy etc who thought it was their duty to convert us.

Yes, you really made us feel special. Do us a favour, and share that feeling with another culture. You should try the Arabs; after all they really need Jaysus in their lives.

      "Food for thought!!!!
Without Christianity, Judaism would be a marginal quaint religion maybe less important than Zoroastrianism.
There would have been far more worshippers of Sango the god of thunder than there would be Jews but for Christianity....
You would think by now there would be a rethink and love for Jesus the Christ right??"

and without Pagan's, christianity wouldnt exist.

lol. there's no proof anywhere in the video that they "lied". and if they did spy, they didn't spy on US, they spied on religious extremists – something that US intelligence failed to do in spite of obvious signs.

but what all the world did see is Palestinians dancing in the streets to the point that Arafat had to condemn it and symbolically give his blood to the victims of 9/11.

The newspaper owner just reviewed the options that have already been "sandboxed". He was dumb enough to put in print, discussions going on in back rooms. Just because he was forced to resign, in some kind of artificial disgrace, does not keep the plans from existing. Maybe it will make some feel better that he has been hidden behind the curtain (the "some" are the same ones that were surprised that this type of thinking is going on at all).
