Jewish newspaper’s editor resigns over Obama assassination column

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - A Jewish newspaper owner who attracted U.S. Secret Service attention for a column suggesting that Israel consider assassinating an American president has resigned as the paper’s editor, employees there said Monday.

The resignation comes after a firestorm over the column and after a tearful apology from the editor-in-chief of Georgia’s Atlanta Jewish Times, Andrew Adler.

The JTA reported Monday that Adler is selling the newspaper, but the office manager, Jerry Farkas, said that was incorrect and that Adler hadn’t announced plans to sell.

The paper’s newly named interim editor-in-chief, John McCurdy, said in an e-mail that he had not talked with Adler about whether he planned to sell the paper.

Adler wrote a January 13 column about the threat of Iran to Israel, posing three options for the Jewish state. One was a "hit on a president in order to preserve Israel's existence."

The column attracted interest from the U.S. Secret Service, with spokesman George Ogilvie saying Saturday, "We are aware of it. We are taking the appropriate investigative steps."

In an interview with an Atlanta TV station on Saturday, Adler broke down as he apologized for the column.

“All I could do now is let President Obama, the State of Israel, everybody affected in Atlanta’s Jewish community … (know) that I’m sincerely sorry for what has transpired,” Adler told Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters Inc., straining to choke back tears.

“It’s storming outside as we speak, and I’ve always felt that when a storm happens that God’s angry with me,” Adler said.

Farkas said the paper is working with the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta to find a permanent managing editor.

The federation had said that it was suspending its relationship with the Atlanta Jewish Times until Adler apologized, agreed to stop writing and gave up editorial control.

Ok, thank you, that apology was so special, Now when will the FBI press charges as they do for anyone who threatens the life of the POTUS? Or will this too be swept under the carpet for our friends?

I too have to agree that this man should be charged; there was a credible threat made to the president of the united states using sources originating within the united states and a plan of action. Im sorry that this man is going through alot, but the united states already GIVES the state of isreal hundreds of millions of dollars annually and give our sons and daughters to fight thier wars. So when a president of the united states doesnt want to play anymore, they want to kill him??? Give me a break, america has suffered enough for isreal a country in which we owe nothing and take food from our own children to feed thiers. Im done with this crap!!!

Let's see, conservative Christians don't like Obama because he's not "Christian" enough and they think he might be a gun-stealing closet muslim. Right wing Jews don't like Obama because they don't think he bows down to Israel enough. And radical muslims don't like Obama because he keeps knocking off their leaders. If Obama has so many "religious" types mad at him, he must be doing something right.

Agreed GaryB. To be honest I don't think Obama is religious at all. Someone with that level of intelligence would apply reasonable logic and understand that religion is a farce. Now don't get spiritualism confused with religion. Spiritualism is a state of being, religion is a state of following and converting.

@ hamsta, saying President Obama is unAmerican is just as bad as what this editor said. You repubs think you can say whatever you want about a sitting president and still get by with it. I didn't vote for Obama, but I still respect him. I didn't like Dubya, but all I did was laugh at his ignorance for 8 years. And Obama is a he!!uva lot smarter than Dubya will ever be. Get a life.

    January 23, 2012 at 6:56 pm |
    • Robert

actually, no, saying Obama is Un-American is not NEARLY as bad as what this guy did. Look at the filth that you people called Bush for 8 years. Obama is Unamerican. He is an awful president. Of course, what this guy wrote was WAY over the line.

      January 23, 2012 at 7:07 pm |
    • Amen Amen Amen

Actually Thatguy371, anyone can say anything they want in this country. Forget about freedom of speech? You're unAmerican if you think you have the right to tell someone what they can and can't say.

Obama is WAAAAAAAAY smarter than Bush!!!! Bush could have been the poster child for stupidity. I didnt even know stupidity was a diseas until Bush came into the presidency! But he did do one thing right, they are now treating stupid people all over the country and one day we may be able to wipe it out all together! Thanks George. BTW George the air reserve that you went awol from is looking for you, they need you to sign you dishonorable discharge papers as the ones you presented to the country where fraudulent!!

      January 23, 2012 at 7:24 pm |
    • csam18

Robert, you seriously think Bush has anywhere near the intelligence of Obama? LOL! Bush couldn't speak intelligently in a debate against a cricket let alone Obama. The guy can't even eat correctly without choking on food. I'm surprised he remembers to breathe.

Too many people on both sides equate antisemitism with anyone who disagree wit h Israel or American policy toward Israel. its not. Some Americans would sell out the US for Israel – that's been going on for years. Israel does not put US interests first. And now it seems the hard core of both countries advocate violent action against those who don't follow that desire.

And the proof is that he's had the CIA and the military kill all kinds of Jewish leaders while even allowing a major Islamic leader to come to the White House and to adress a joint session of Congress. I got that right, didn't I? Bin Laden and Awahiri were Jewsih, right? Netanyahu is a radical Muslim, right?

As a Jew I find Mr. Adler's remarks deplorable. His words were detrimental to Israel and the United States alike. Equally, upsetting, however, is the anti-Semitism that is appearing in this comment thread. As a Jewish liberal married into a Republican family, I can anticipate hearing a lot more about the anti-Semitism of the left because of this nonsense. So please, crazy Zionists and anti-Semites, be quiet and let the adults talk.

    • Whatwouldhappentoanarabormuslimthatdidthesamething?

People are tired of the anti-semitism charge, Eric. If you complain about Israel's role pushing the American military to invade Iraq, you must somehow like hitler. The only thing debatable about Israel's complicity in lobbying for an American attack on Iraq is how much pull they really had. Some people say it was a lot. Some people say it was insignificant. If you make the claim that it was very influential in the bush administration's deliberations, than you must automatically have been in favor of the holocaust. If you say for example that chertoff's pushing cancer causing body scanners (which the warmongering, militaristic eu has abandoned) on airport security budget in fact has a connection to his religious beliefs and dual citizenship, you must therefore hate all Jews. People are tired of all this war in the Middle east and favoritism towards Israel, Eric. they see their own children going off to fight, while the loudest voices for war either sat out the Vietnam War or don't encourage their own sons and daughters to sign up or both. Now they see many of the same voices using the same tactics for another war in the middle east that will probably be worse than the last one. It's enough to make an anti-Semite out of a peaceful gardener that went to the Ivy League. If Germany were pushing America to make a suicidal attack on Russia, and in the meantime, the German army planned to sit out the fighting, ditto for most young German American men, wouldn't you begin to resent and maybe even hate Germany and things German? I rest my case.
