Jewish newspaper’s editor resigns over Obama assassination column

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - A Jewish newspaper owner who attracted U.S. Secret Service attention for a column suggesting that Israel consider assassinating an American president has resigned as the paper’s editor, employees there said Monday.

The resignation comes after a firestorm over the column and after a tearful apology from the editor-in-chief of Georgia’s Atlanta Jewish Times, Andrew Adler.

The JTA reported Monday that Adler is selling the newspaper, but the office manager, Jerry Farkas, said that was incorrect and that Adler hadn’t announced plans to sell.

The paper’s newly named interim editor-in-chief, John McCurdy, said in an e-mail that he had not talked with Adler about whether he planned to sell the paper.

Adler wrote a January 13 column about the threat of Iran to Israel, posing three options for the Jewish state. One was a "hit on a president in order to preserve Israel's existence."

The column attracted interest from the U.S. Secret Service, with spokesman George Ogilvie saying Saturday, "We are aware of it. We are taking the appropriate investigative steps."

In an interview with an Atlanta TV station on Saturday, Adler broke down as he apologized for the column.

“All I could do now is let President Obama, the State of Israel, everybody affected in Atlanta’s Jewish community … (know) that I’m sincerely sorry for what has transpired,” Adler told Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasters Inc., straining to choke back tears.

“It’s storming outside as we speak, and I’ve always felt that when a storm happens that God’s angry with me,” Adler said.

Farkas said the paper is working with the Jewish Federation of Greater Atlanta to find a permanent managing editor.

The federation had said that it was suspending its relationship with the Atlanta Jewish Times until Adler apologized, agreed to stop writing and gave up editorial control.

I said it before and I'll say it again! First of alll just look at the paterm or modus operandi and you can draw the conclusion that this printing was the work of the Tea Party solely to manipulate the Jewish vote that was very much instrumental in getting President Obama elected. Don't buy it? Well, let's review...Israel is calling for the assassination of President Obama because our President imposes the toughest sanctions of any nation in history on Iran so that the existence of Israel could be preserve. Does that make any sense at all? So which Middle Eastern country are these sanctions imposed upon for it to relinquish its nuclear program? Israel or Iran? So why would Israel or the American Jewish community call for the assassination of our President who is pro Israel? Let's face it, it just doesn't add up at all.

So why would I say its the work of the Tea Party? Well, if you look at the nature of all the domestic terrorism that have taken place in across our country ever since President Obama has taken office, you would discover that they all hand the wrightings of the Tea Party. First of all, these are the same domestic terrorists and white supremacists who went to Sen. John McCain Presidential rallies in 2008 and made comments such as "shoot him and kill him" in referring to candidate Obama. Then when the historic healthcare legislation was passed in 2010, these domestic trailor trash went to district offices belonging to Democratic members of congress and fired gun shots. Then one year later and almost to the date of passage of the healthcare legislation, the oil rig in the Gulf explodes. And within just a few months after Sarah Palin's infamous "don't retreat, reload" BS, Congresswoman Gabriella Giffords and others were gunned down in Arizona including a little 10 year old American girl while she waved the American flag.

A few months ago, a disturbed Hispanic gunman fired a rifle at the White House and his actions clearly had the writings of the Tea Party that appeared to have hired him to carry out this outrageous crime also to manipulate the Hispanic vote that was also instrumental in helping President Obama get elected. And if you don't buy this theory, then why would this troubled Hispanic gunman leave a rifle just used to commit this crime at the scene of the crime so it could be traced and lead to his arrest? Sort of like OJ leaving the knife at the scene of the crime to get caught, don't you think?

Now you have this assassination conspiracy by this Jewish publisher. But I guarantee you the Tea Party held Mr. Adler at gunpoint and forced him to right this column. And perhaps they even told him his family had been kidnapped and unless he wrote this disturbing column, his family would be harmed. Don't buy it? Well, just try to connect the dots and when you do, I guarantee it spells out the words Tea Party.

Its a very dangerous game the Tea Party continues to play in this country but perhaps when the Tea Party don't realize is when you keep playing with fire, eventually you're going to get burnt. And unless the CIA and the FBI start monitoring and investigating these domestic terrorists, I guarentee America ends up with another civil war on its hands. And by the way, I believe the last time we fought a civil war, the Union won.

And the irony here is that the Tea Party is the one generally associated with moronic, stupid conspiracy theories.

This is satire, right? Please tell me you're not THAT crazy. Of all the conspiracy theories to believe, you pick this?

adler is a jew writing for a jewish newspaper about a jewish issue which has nothing to do with "The Tea Party" you are really out to lunch with this conspiracy theory stuff. the only clear statement that comes out of adler's commentary is that he so filled with zionist lunacy that he doesn't even have the ability to filter his comments in a way that masks what an idiot he is. you two must have been separated at birth because the faulty logic that you exhibit here is astounding. although adler was stupid enough to express it, the fact remains there are a lot of jews who believe that obama is anti-semitic and support adler's sentiment. which shows you what a bunch of lunatics the zionist movement has produced. obama is not the enemy and it is in fact hawk whackjobs like netanyahu and his party that are the enenmy. they irresponsibly make comments to their base that serve as red meat to incite lunatics like adler to make such egregious. see if you connect these dots because at the core of all of these types of commentaries you will find zionist lunatics

    • Claiming fiction as fact is detrimental to all reasonable beings

WOW...and WOW!!!!! Dude, you have completely missed your calling as espionage fiction writer! This is effin fabulous, you should write an entire book about this and sell it as an ebook, and since a whole lot of stupid people believe everything they read online, it would be an internet best seller. Sweet lil baby jesus, you could effectively take down the Tea Party with this, this is wonderful, where have you been all my life!!

So where was all this outrage when the movie about Bush's assassination was made? Oh that's right assassination of a conservative is free speech and should be revered, but when it's a liberal we're talking about...

    • leo

when was a movie about Bush's assassination made? I don't recall ever seeing one.

However, I agree. Threatening to assassinate anyone, much less a politician is wrong no matter if that person is conservative or liberal, democrat or republican.

You idiot. You can make a fictional representation of any event. But when you make an editorial statement advising a course of action then you are advocating that specific act. You cannot advocate a violent or in this case a traitorous act and not expect repercussions.

Umm, the movie, Death of a President was a 2006 "BRITISH: high concept motion picture distributed by Optimum Releasing United Kingdom(UK) and NOT by an American movie producer. So take that up with them. Right now we're discussing an AMERICAN citizen make death threats against The President of The United States of America which is treasonist.

the difference in outrage between obama and bush is that bush hustled the country into a war under false pretenses to fill the pockets of groups like the carlye group, haliburton, the rand corporation etc.etc. it has got nothing to do with liberall/conservative positions. it has to do with bush/chenehy being a men so devoid of character they don't even rate at the bottom of the food chain category. bush/cheney are responsible for outing valery plame as a cia agent which was in fact treasonous, the collapse of the financial system vis a vis the deregulation policies and getting us into two wars all of which will take years to recover from the net results of their collective actions. but mindless automatons like yourself don't get it, well i guess we'll have to give another few thousand years of evolution for you to catch up.

Not only that but President Obama's father later re-married an American Jewish woman Ruth Nidesand in 1964 and had 2 sons with her.

Therefore I just don't get where the President is supposed to hate Jews or a disregard for Israel because his bio father whom he did not know and met 1 time for the first and only time at the age of 10 was a non-practicing Muslim married to a Jewish woman?

Yeah, I wonder what would have happened if he were other than that particular religion and the president was someone other than Barack Obama. I'm not sure how or why Adler's statements could be permitted under the First Amendment. Then again, I've seen public events where people said the most terrible, racist, treasonous things imaginable, and some of those speakers are political commentators on TV today. By common decency Adler should resign as editor and sell his newspaper. If Adler isn't loyal to the USA he should leave this country. I can't believe most of his reader sagree with him. So many others, here at this CNN board, also need to leave America. Catch a Time Machine to Nazi Germany or some Caliphate from the Middle Ages, which is where your mental illness will seem normal. Those times have passed, and your time should too.

Its not the first time some jews/Israelis would demean the USA and promote their perceived 51st state. Its an open secret that their primary allegiance is to the the state of israel; to them living in and using the US of A is a means to an end. Blinding supporting the jewish state has created this sort of foolish and intractable situiation for the US.

As most Jewish-Americans are secular or only moderately religious, they are not likely to be of Mr. Adler's obsessed type. In fact, they have a fairly-high rate of marrying-out of their self-identification as Jewish. I don't see Gabby Giffords, for example, as America's greatest cause for concern. Anyone of any ethnic background who can't say they are first an American, and then advocate for international alliances based on America's best interests and values, shouldn't even be here.

According to the article, Mr. Adler said "It's storming outside as we speak, and I've always felt that when a storm happens, that's God angry with me." What an astonishingly inflated opinion this man has of himself. That the creator of the universe chooses the weather in Atlanta to express His feelings about Mr. Adler's columns?

    January 23, 2012 at 7:26 pm |
    • Peikoviany

I think Mr. Adler has already figured out that he doesn't speak for God, and if God isn't reminding him via the weather, the FBI will remind him via an office visit.

the problem with the israelis is that if anyone most especially the president of the united states disagrees with thier policy interest they immediately label that person as anti-semetic and it is nothing but BS. Should the world community allow the israelis to continue their genocide toward the palestinians? the answer is no! if you disagree with this position. you are an anti-semite. You should the israelis be allowed to continue with the escalation of settlements? the answer is no. if you disagree with this position you are an anti-semite. Should the israelis be allowed to continually ignore international law and un resolutions. The answer is no is you disagree with this position you are an anti-semite. Get it? if you disagree with anything that the Israelis want you are an anti-semite. I am an American Citizen and I do not and will not support Israel for any reason until they stop the apartheid that they have directed towards the Palestinians. I am not anti-semitic I am a humanist. All of the BS that the Israelis come up with the defend their core position regarding their treatment of the Palestinians will be what it has always been "WRONG!!!"
