Islam doesn't justify 'honor murders,' experts insist

By Richard Allen Greene, CNN

(CNN) - Zainab Shafia's crime was to run off to marry a man her parents hated. Middle sister Sahar's crime was to wear revealing clothes and have secret boyfriends. Youngest sister Geeti's crime was to do badly in school and call social workers for help dealing with a family home in turmoil.

The punishment for all three teenage Canadian sisters was the same: death.

Their executioner: their brother, acting on instructions from the father to run their car off the road.

Another family member, their father's first wife in a polygamous marriage, was also killed.

Hamed Shafia, his father, Mohammed, and his mother, Tooba Mohammed Yahya, were sentenced to life in prison for murder, with Judge Robert Maranger excoriating their "twisted notion of honor, a notion of honor that is founded upon the domination and control of women, a sick notion of honor that has absolutely no place in any civilized society."

Leading Muslim thinkers wholeheartedly endorsed the Canadian judge's verdict, insisting that "honor murders" had no place and no support in Islam.

"There is nothing in the Quran that justifies honor killings. There is nothing that says you should kill for the honor of the family," said Taj Hargey, director of the Muslim Educational Centre of Oxford in England.

"This idea that 'somehow a girl has besmirched our honor and therefore the thing to do is kill her' is bizarre, and Muslims should stop using this defense," he said, arguing that the practice is cultural, not religious in origin.

"You cannot say this is what Islam approves of. You can say this is what their culture approves of," he said.

The Shafia family is originally from Afghanistan.

Experts say honor murders take place in many parts of the world.

"It's definitely a problem that happens in many different places: the Middle East, Pakistan, Bangladesh and among immigrant communities in North America," said Nadya Khalife, a researcher on women's rights in the Arab world for Human Rights Watch.

Several Arab countries and territories, including Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Yemen and the Palestinian territories, have laws providing lesser sentences for honor murders than for other murders, Human Rights Watch says.

Egypt and Jordan also have laws that have been interpreted to allow reduced sentences for honor crimes, the group says.

Reliable figures of the number of honor murders are hard to come by, Khalife said, but she pointed to a United Nations Population Fund estimate of 5,000 per year.

Khalife agreed that the practice should not be blamed on Islam.

"It's not linked to religion; it's more cultural," she said. "There have been several Islamic scholars who have issued fatwas against honor killing."

Mohammed Shafia, who denied murder, said himself in court that Islam did not justify honor murders.

"In our religion, a person who kills his wife or daughter, there is nothing more dishonorable," he testified.

But Shafia was heard condemning his dead children in wiretapped conversations played in court.

"May the devil defecate on their graves! This is what a daughter should be? Would a daughter be such a whore?" he said.

Hargey, the director of the Muslim Educational Centre, said violence was sometimes the result of painful transition.

"Muslims are in a state of flux," he said.

"They are between two worlds: the ancient world and the new technological age," he said. "Women are getting rights and the ability to choose their own spouses. The family in Canada didn't know how to respond to this: the conflict between the discipline of children and the new reality."

Irshad Manji, the author of "Allah, Liberty and Love: Courage to Reconcile Faith and Freedom," said there was another conflict at work in honor murders, a term CNN uses in preference to "honor killings" because the latter phrase does not properly describe the crime.

It is "a tribal tradition that emphasizes the family or the tribe or the community over the individual," she said.

Although the practice may not be Islamic, she said, not all Muslims understand the distinction.

"It is a problem within Islam because of how Muslims often confuse culture and religion," she said. "It's Muslims who have to learn to separate culture and religion. If we don't, Islam will continue to get the bad name that it gets."

But one vocal British campaigner against honor violence points out that not all the crimes are perpetrated by Muslims.

Jasvinder Sanghera, who was the victim of a forced marriage, is not Muslim; she is Sikh.

"Significant cases are happening within South Asian communities, be it Pakistani, Indian, Sikh, Muslim, Kurdish, Iranian, Middle Eastern communities," she said.

"And we have to recognize that because the statistics don't lie. I am not standing here trying to embarrass those communities. But equally, those communities should be ashamed because this is happening in their community and they are not taking a stand," she said.

On the other hand, honor murders are not a problem in Indonesia, which has the world's largest Muslim population.

"No such a practice can be found among Indonesian Muslims," said Azyumardi Azra, the director of the graduate school at the State Islamic University in Jakarta, Indonesia.

" 'Honor killing' is, I believe, a cultural problem among Arab and South Asian Muslims. I don't think that kind of practice has an Islamic basis," he said.

Although women and girls make up the overwhelming number of victims, there have been at least some male victims, including Ahmet Yildiz, a gay Turkish man whose fugitive father is the main suspect in his 2008 shooting death.

Britain has had about a dozen honor murders per year for the past several years, said Ghayasuddin Siddiqui of the Muslim Parliament of Great Britain.

He, too, said the crimes were not justified by Islam.

"This comes from tribal customs where the father - not both parents - see children as their property. A girl decides to marry somebody of whom their parents do not approve, and they conspire and find some way to kill and dispose of this body," he said. "This is a kind of misplaced shame that parents feel that their daughter has decided to marry somebody of her choosing, not theirs."

Britain's Crown Prosecution Service has an expert devoted to prosecuting honor-based violence, Nazir Afzal.

Convicting perpetrators can be difficult, he said.

"There is a wall of silence around this, and people are not prepared to talk," he said.

But Afzal insisted that it was "absolutely important that you bring every single person to justice because you want to deter other people from doing it."

And along with the Islamic scholars and human rights advocates, he rejected out of hand the idea that religion justified it.

"At the end of the day, murder is murder. There is no faith on Earth, no community on Earth that justifies this," he said.

"Abrahamic faiths say 'Thou shalt not kill,' " he pointed out. "At the end of the day, nobody should die for this."

CNN's Paula Newton, Atika Shubert, Bharati Naik, Ashley Hayes, Ivan Watson and Becky Anderson contributed to this report.

The Ten Commandments say people shouldn't murder, by the way. And G-d gave the Seven Laws of Noah to mankind, which are: To believe in One G-d, not to blaspheme Him, not to steal and kidnap, not to murder, not to do adultery, etc., not to eat the limb of a living animal (animal cruelty) and to set up effective courts of justice. It used to be done in Roman times, but remains done nowadays by Arabs, where you will find violated girls whipped to death or otherwise murdered, as if what happened were their fault, and where men kill their daughters and sisters for being violated, and for anything else they don't like regarding this aspect of their life.

      STEP Proved you wrong...

Dr. Herbert Benson of Harvard Medical School and other scientists tested the effect of having three Christian groups pray for particular patients, starting the night before surgery and continuing for two weeks. The volunteers prayed for "a successful surgery with a quick, healthy recovery and no complications" for specific patients, for whom they were given the first name and first initial of the last name.

The patients, meanwhile, were split into three groups of about 600 apiece: those who knew they were being prayed for, those who were prayed for but only knew it was a possibility, and those who weren't prayed for but were told it was a possibility.

The researchers didn't ask patients or their families and friends to alter any plans they had for prayer, saying such a step would have been unethical and impractical. The study looked for any complications within 30 days of the surgery. Results showed no effect of prayer on complication-free recovery. But 59 percent of the patients who knew they were being prayed for developed a complication, versus 52 percent of those who were told it was just a possibility.

Ummm, No! Not even close. If you a referring to a family member killing other family members, it usually some form of manic-depressive psychosis. Apparently in parts of the ME, Africa and Asia, it is a part of their culture to murder women who disobey they father or husband. It is not even considered murder! So mideeval. Hopefully these cultures will join the rest of the civilized world in the 21st century. I'm afraid though they may exterminate themselves. They do breed like rabbits though... hope is not lost! Israel treats the Arabs that live within its borders with more freedoms and better than any Arab is treated in the Arab countries. News stations do not say truth. They say what sells. They will not say anything good about Israel and people get very skewed information about something which they know very little history. Part of the reason they don't say the truth is that they are afraid of what the Arabs will say and do if they did say the truth about the Arabs.

      January 31, 2012 at 10:07 pm |
    • md2205

How dare you say Israel treats the Arabs unjustly. The Arabs are the ones attacking Israel. They continue to wage war against Israel, a war of physical violence and a war of words, through the media, which goes along with all the propaganda the Arabs feed them. Regarding the refugees: What about the hundreds of thousands of Jewish refugees that were kicked out of Arab countries in the last century alone, after the Arabs appropriated all their property and belongings? Those Jews never allowed themselves to become a refugee problem because they worked together to better their lot while rebuilding their land. Why haven't the Arab countries, drowning in their oil dollars, seen fit to assist their brothers from their plight? Why? Because it would be politically unwise. Refugee camps are exploited to make bad guys out of the Jews. Israel did not drive out the Arabs who lived there in 1948 when the Arabs started war against them. The Arab residents left themselves when the Arab countries told them to leave and promised they could return after they drove the Jews into the sea and then they could have all of the Jews' possessions. The Arabs turned their own people into refugees. The Arabs who remained in Israel became full Israeli citizens and are represented in a democratic parliament. These are the facts and those who say otherwise are spewing the same hatred every other anti-semite has spewed.

Islam sure teaches a twisted kind of peace: If you do what I want, I will leave you in peace. And if you do not do what I want, I will not leave you in peace. But I want peace, so do what I want, and if you do what I want, there will be peace.

Funny how it is the people who attack others are the very ones who say they want peace.

Thousands of rockets from Gaza have been shot to Israel in the past few years, and the fact that millions of Israeli's haven't been killed is testament to G-d watching over the Jews there. But you don't read about this – you only read about Israel doing this to the Arabs, Israel doing that to the Arabs – it is more than outrageous. It is an out and out war against Israel. The fact is that it is the Arabs who are the ones killing little Jewish boys, and babies, and girls, and women, and men, and they have throughout history, and I never heard one of their leaders even hinting at them to stop.

      January 31, 2012 at 10:15 pm |
    • md2205

The children Israel shoots at are used as human shields and are in front of terrorists, by design of those terrorists so the terrorists can "show the world" that Israel shoots at children. They are manipulations designed for media exposure. The children Israel shoots at have shot first at Israeli people or soldiers, or are in front of those who did. I remember when the Jewish soldiers risked their lives as they got out of their tanks to move away Arab babies their own Arab fathers had put in front of the Israeli tanks during the war. No other army would ever have acted that way! Your people promote lies and nothing but lies.

      January 31, 2012 at 10:16 pm |
    • md2205

And think about this, too: It is interesting that non-Jews wish to have Jerusalem called an international city, and not the capitol of Israel. For the first time in centuries, now that Israel has control over Jerusalem, all peoples may freely worship in the places holy to them (and that is not completely true as the Arabs do not let the Jews into all areas of the Cave of Machpela, where Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are buried.) Under Jordanian rule, no one pressed for international status. The Christians were content. They could worship where they wanted. So could the Moslems. Only the Jews weren't allowed to worship where they wanted. They weren't even allowed to touch the stones of the Western Wall, which still stands from the days of the ancient Jerusalem Temple. Under Jordanian rule, synagogues hundreds of years old, filled with Torah scrolls and relics, were destroyed, and the headstones of Jewish graves were torn up from cemeteries to make military latrines. It is only now, when the Holy Land is under the flag displaying the Star of David, when all religions can pray in freedom, that countries demand international status for Jerusalem.

I ask you: Why are Arabs so bent on getting land away from tiny Israel, which belongs to the Jews ever since G-d gave it to them, and to where the Jews have miraculously returned so recently, just after one of the most horrific periods in Jewish history, where Jews were so viciously murdered, starved, tortured, burned alive, gassed, beaten, electrocuted, etc. etc. For many hundreds of years, Jews were kicked out of most of the European countries without even their possessions allowed to be taken along (meaning: appropriated by the non-Jews), and they had nowhere to go. Jews were just as equally kicked out of Arab countries for hundreds of years, or thrown into jail, and their possessions taken from them as well, and they had nowhere to go. By the way, many banks in Europe froze the assets of the Jews, and those Jews who could have saved themselves during the Holocaust with money to survive, couldn't take their money for its assistance. Now that Israel exists as a Jewish land, Jews do have a place to go when it gets tough in the country in which they live. Why do the Arabs find it so compelling that they must have this land? They were the ones who told the Arabs living there to leave in 1948. They are the rich oil countries: Let them figure out what to do with the mess they deliberately made. They could have absorbed the refugees into their lands in 1948. They chose not to in order to corner Israel and continue the war with the Jews.

Here is an example of a Christian honor killing. The Christian bride tried to marry a Muslim, so her older brother (Christian) murdered them both when the groom refused to convert to Christianity. The article is on a secular website, though it links to the original Turkish news story....funny how no mainstream American news sources picked this story up when it happened.

"Several Arab countries and territories, including Iraq, Kuwait, Syria, Yemen and the Palestinian territories, have laws providing lesser sentences for honor murders than for other murders. Egypt and Jordan also have laws that have been interpreted to allow reduced sentences for honor crimes."

So we can link honor killings to the laws of these countries. And we can link the laws of these countries to to a foundation based on Islamic law. So the link maybe not direct, but there is a link.

If Islam is so against honor killings and honor killings are happening in Muslim countries (yes not only muslim countries) then why is there not more vocal opposition to these reduced sentences?

ISLAM IS THE FASTEST GROWING RELIGION IN THE WESTERN WORLD. AMERICA AND WESTERN EUROPE ARE INCLUDED. I MYSELF AM A CONVERT TO ISLAM. THERE IS NOTHING IN ISLAM THAT JUSTIFY HONOR KILLINGS AND THERE IS NOTHING IN ISLAM THAT SUPPORT HONOR KILLINGS. WITH THAT SAID, CNN CAN TRY ALL IT WANT TO PAINT A BAD PICTURE OF ISLAM. PEOPLE THREW OUT THE WORLD WILL CONTINUE TO EMBRACE ISLAM, AND PEOPLE THREW OUT THE WORLD WILL CONTINUE TO SEE THE RELIGION OF ISLAM AS A JUST AND PEACEFUL RELIGION.

I HAVE A BETTER QUESTION FOR CNN

WHAT IS THE TIE BETWEEN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 'PEDOPHILIA'?

TIME TO PULL OUT THE ARCHIVE

IT IS A UNDENIABLE FACT THAT THERE ARE MORE FAMILY MASSACRES HERE IN THE UNITED STATES, THEN ANY PART OF THE MUSLIM WORLD.

WHY ARE SO MANY CHRISTIAN MEN MASSACRING THERE FAMILIES HERE IN THE UNITED STATES?

WHY ARE SO MANY CHRISTIAN YOUNG BOYS AND TEENAGERS SLAUGHTERING THERE PARENTS HERE IN THE UNITED STATES?

WHY ARE SO MANY CHRISTIAN TEENAGERS AND YOUNG ADULTS KILLING PEOPLE THAT THEY GO TO SCHOOL WITH?

CNN, CAN YOU PLEASE WRITE ARTICLES ON WHY ISREALIS KILL LITTLE PALESTINAN BOYS AND GIRLS. AND CAN YOU PLEASE WRITE ABOUT HOW THE ISREALIS ARE DENYING THE PALESTINAN PEOPLE RUNNING WATER AND FORCING THEM TO LIVE IN GETTOS.

    THE RELIGION ISLAM TEACHES PEACE

The topic is honor killings. I understand your desire to divert the topic, so I will endulge you.

You said "IT IS A UNDENIABLE FACT THAT THERE ARE MORE FAMILY MASSACRES HERE IN THE UNITED STATES, THEN ANY PART OF THE MUSLIM WORLD."

Please provide us with the evidence you gase this claim on and we can discuss.

I agree Andrew, and for those who commented negativly are the ignorant fools who believe what they hear on the media and take that as a history lesson instead of getting a real education.Obviously they have spare time to bravely runt their sick thoughts from behind a computer screen.

the reason CNN doesnt publish the crap that you have asked for is that it's crap. when the palestinians sop sending suicide/homicide bombers and rockets into Israel and then run and hide behind the skirts of their women and in the playgrounds of their children, maybe innocents wont have to get hurt. when you and your brethren acknowledge that you are the cause of your own misery, maybe you will no longer find a need to whine

repeat after me andrew : If i'm going to represent that I live in the US, I need to learn how to spell English words. Also, repeat the Muslim/Palestinian anthem 5 times a day: "woe is me, woe is me, everyone but us is the cause of our misery. woe is me, woe is me, we are our own worst enemy"

Eleven townspeople were killed in Sherwood Crescent, where the plane's wings and fuel tanks plummeted in a fiery explosion, destroying several houses and leaving a huge crater, with debris causing damage to a number of buildings nearby. Her fellow villagers in Bangladesh's Shariatpur district had already passed harsh judgment on her. Guilty, they said, of having an affair with a married man. The imam from the local mosque ordered the fatwa, or religious ruling, and the punishment: 101 lashes delivered swiftly, deliberately in public. Hena dropped after 70 and died a week later.

    23) "October 4, 2011, 100 die as a truck loaded with drums of fuel exploded Tuesday at the gate of compound housing several government ministries on a busy Mogadishu street. It was the deadliest single bombing carried out by the al Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group in Somalia since their insurgency began. "

how about the christian-driven terror and horro? Let's start with the Crusades, Colombus, Cortez, slavery (in the Americas), the majority of crimes done in the US (the majority of people in the US are Christian but why is religion never mentioned when they commit a crime?); the list goes on and on.

Yea, just because Christianity out grew it's bloodlust two hundred years ago doesn't make it any better. While ssluvsn's list was not meant to be comprehensive, it does leave out some good ones like the Spanish Inquisition, the 100 years war, the 30 years war, Salem witch trials, the Massacre of the Innocents, and the continuing sectarian violence in Ireland. Violence is a religious thing, and your religion is not likely free of guilt.

The Twenty (or so) Worst Things People Have Done to Each Other:

      M. White, http://necrometrics.com/warstatz.htm#u (required reading)

      The Muslim Conquest of India

"The likely death toll is somewhere between 2 million and 80 million. The geometric mean of those two limits is 12.7 million. "

Rank …..Death Toll ..Cause …..Century……..(Religions/Groups involved)*

      1. 63 million Second World War 20C (Christians et al and Communists/atheists vs. Christians et al, Nazi-Pagan and "Shintoists")

      2. 40 million Mao Zedong (mostly famine) 20C (Communism)

      3. 40 million Genghis Khan 13C (Shamanism or Tengriism)

      4. 27 million British India (mostly famine) 19C (Anglican)

      5. 25 million Fall of the Ming Dynasty 17C (Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Chinese folk religion)

      6. 20 million Taiping Rebellion 19C ( Confucianism, Buddhism and Chinese folk religion vs. a form of Christianity)

      7. 20 million Joseph Stalin 20C (Communism)

      8. 19 million Mideast Slave Trade 7C-19C (Islam)

      9. 17 million Timur Lenk 14C-15C

      10. 16 million Atlantic Slave Trade 15C-19C (Christianity)

      11. 15 million First World War 20C (Christians vs. Christians)

      12. 15 million Conquest of the Americas 15C-19C (Christians vs. Pagans)

      13. 13 million Muslim Conquest of India 11C-18C

      14. 10 million An Lushan Revolt 8C

      15. 10 million Xin Dynasty 1C

      16. 9 million Russian Civil War 20C (Christians vs Communists)

      17. 8 million Fall of Rome 5C (Pagans vs. Pagans)

      18. 8 million Congo Free State 19C-20C (Christians)

      19. 7Β½ million Thirty Years War 17C (Christians vs Christians)

      20. 7Β½ million Fall of the Yuan Dynasty 14C

*:" Is religion responsible for more violent deaths than any other cause?

A: No, of course not – unless you define religion so broadly as to be meaningless. Just take the four deadliest events of the 20th Century – Two World Wars, Red China and the Soviet Union – no religious motivation there, unless you consider every belief system to be a religion."

Q: So, what you're saying is that religion has never killed anyone.

A: Arrgh... You all-or-nothing people drive me crazy. There are many doc-umented examples where members of one religion try to exterminate the members of another religion. Causation is always complex, but if the only difference between two warring groups is religion, then that certainly sounds like a religious conflict to me. Is it the number one cause of mass homicide in human history? No. Of the 22 worst episodes of mass killing, maybe four were primarily religious. Is that a lot? Well, it's more than the number of wars fought over soccer, or s-ex (The Trojan and Sabine Wars don't even make the list.), but less than the number fought over land, money, glory or prestige.

In my Index, I list 41 religious conflicts compared with 27 oppressions under "Communism", 24 under Colonialism, 2 under "Railroads" and 2 under "Scapegoats". Make of that what you will."
