My Take: Inside our scary, society-destroying family

Editor’s Note: Marci Weis is the chief operating officer at a healthcare consulting and care management company in Washington.  She is pursuing a Masters in Divinity degree for ordained ministry in the United Church of Christ.  Weis and her lesbian partner have been together more than 20 years and they have two daughters.

Washington's Senate could vote as early as today on a bill that would allow gay marriage in the Evergreen State. A House vote is expected within days. If it passes both chambers, Gov. Christine Gregoire has promised to sign it into law.

By Marci Weis, Special to CNN

"Mama, if it doesn’t pass, will we still be able to be a family?"

Those were the words of my then-7-year-old daughter on the night of the 2009 election. Over the prior months, sides had been chosen, harsh words had been hurled from all fronts, battle lines drawn. Up for vote was a referendum on whether Washington state would allow gay and lesbian couples to have several of the rights and responsibilities of legally married heterosexual couples.

God is responsible for every single abortion in history. It says so in the Bible. He is a sick prik.

Evil one, God creates everything, also free will he gave to men. Therefore, I'd repent if I were you.

      You are incorrect.

    • YeahRight

"God creates everything, also free will he gave to men"

Not only does the existence of God logically, philosophically and theologically deny the possibility of free will, but the Bible also says that there is no free will! Examining the writings of St Paul, the Biblical books of Ephesians, Romans, 2 Timothy, 2 Thessalonians and Revelations, we see that God's plan overrides our free will; those that do good do the specific good that God predestined them to do, and all others are ruled by Satan because God sends "powerful delusions" to them. The Christian Bible frequently states that God creates our future and decides our fates, no matter what our own will is. It constantly denies that we have free will.

"You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed."

Heaven Sent you wouldn't know what that is because if you did you wouldn't have used John 15:1-6. You're clueless to reality babe and your a horrific Christian. Your lack of love and kindness is deplorable.

Everyone knows the story about Jesus and the woman about to be stoned by the mob. This account is only found in John 7:53-8:12. The mob asked Jesus whether they should stone the woman (the punishment required by the Old Testament) or show her mercy. Jesus doesn’t fall for this trap. Jesus allegedly states, let the one who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her. The crowd dissipates out of shame. That story was not originally in the Gospel of John or in any of the Gospels. It was added by later scribes. The story is not found in the oldest and best manuscripts of the Gospel of John. Nor does its writing style comport with the rest of John. Most serious textual critics state that this story should not be considered part of the Bible.

Didn't God create us? Then he is responsible for how we are, how our brains work, our ability to cope in his world. If God is perfect, all powerful and all-knowing, perhaps he might have thought to step in give and them a little pep talk before the y offed themself and ruined the lives of their families? He can create the universe but he can't help a person who is depressed or ill from comitting suicide? What, too busy to save his children?

@God is the Evil One- "Didn't God create us? Then he is responsible for how we are, how our brains work, our ability to cope in his world."

~No...he is not responsible. Is the man that created the first true gun responsible for all the deaths due to his creation? Of course not.

"If God is perfect, all powerful and all-knowing, perhaps he might have thought to step in give and them a little pep talk before the y offed themself and ruined the lives of their families?"

~I am not sure what you mean by "perfect". Define a perfect God. Then I'll have to slap a No True Scotsman falalcy on you but that's the way it works. You are under the impression that God is suppose to step in at every moment when we screw up. I doubt you will find much texts to back that notion up.

"He can create the universe but he can't help a person who is depressed or ill from comitting suicide? What, too busy to save his children?"

~I submit that you don't know how God helps. I also say there is free will tht we humans have. It's not God's fault if one decides to express that free will through suicide.

      @yak

First, you are comparing an omnipotent and omniscient deity to a man. Not sure that makes sense. Second, how can you be sure, in the eyes of the Lord, that the Chinese, the creator of gunpowder (I think that is what you mean) is not responsible for all the deaths due to this invention? I am not willing to make that leap. However I don’t think that is the case. If God created people, and some of those people created gunpowder, and gun powder led to guns and guns to slaughter, I blame God. He obviously enjoys it or he would disallow it. He is Supreme.

“Perfect” meaning a God that can do no wrong. The creator of all things. Unless you disagree that he can do wrong as I have posited. I fail to see how the No True Scotsman fallacy would apply. I am under the impression that if God exists, he could do more that sit around and watch the world suffer. He just doesn’t want to. God is more like an Evil Scientist than the Prince of Peace.

I submit that there is no free will in accordance with God and the Bible. If so, God is responsible for all things good and bad.

@God is the Evil One- "First, you are comparing an omnipotent and omniscient deity to a man. Not sure that makes sense."

Of course it doesn't make sense because I'm not doing that. I am discussing cause, effect and the responsibility. You want to pin responsibility on God for the actions we commit.

"Second, how can you be sure, in the eyes of the Lord, that the Chinese, the creator of gunpowder (I think that is what you mean) is not responsible for all the deaths due to this invention? I am not willing to make that leap."

You might not and you are welcome to not make that leap. However, I have seen nothing to make me think that God would hold anyone in the past accountable for the specific sins done today.

"If God created people, and some of those people created gunpowder, and gun powder led to guns and guns to slaughter, I blame God. He obviously enjoys it or he would disallow it. He is Supreme."

You are reaching here. You accuse me of comparing God to man...yet you have no problem dictating what you (a mild manner imperfect being) think God feels or what he would do. I am sorry but you are being a hypocrite here.

"“Perfect” meaning a God that can do no wrong."

What is "wrong" to God? Or are you judging God on what you think is wrong?

"Unless you disagree that he can do wrong as I have posited."

I believe he can do things that ppl may think of as wrong.

"I fail to see how the No True Scotsman fallacy would apply. I am under the impression that if God exists, he could do more that sit around and watch the world suffer. He just doesn’t want to. God is more like an Evil Scientist than the Prince of Peace."

You are trying to state how a True God would behave. Yes, you are falling into a version of the No True Scotsman Fallacy.

"I submit that there is no free will in accordance with God and the Bible. If so, God is responsible for all things good and bad."

I disagree. Otherwise what is the point of a book that wants you to accept the Lord as your savior. If you have no free will at any level...what would be the point?

Even more desperation, you have love you're proving the study correct. The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs.

So why don't you pray for the miracle that all the starving people in Africa get fed today....oh that's right prayer doesn't work.

@God is Scary and Mean- "There is no purpose under heaven except God's punishment. He is an evil tyrant who enjoys the smell of burning flesh."

You have no evidence with this statement.
God created good and evil according to the Tanakh...he is beyond those limited concepts right? How can one be a tyrant when the entire universe is theirs to begin with? If you call God a tyrant..that means at some level you must feel equal to him. That would be a silly argument based on other comments you have made.

Yak, evidence? The Bible insists that we bow down in terrified worship of the Almighty or roast for eternity in Hell. This tells us two things, one, God is a Tyrant and 2 is also the Devil or at least they have a civil relationship. Which would make God a tyrant too. I don’t even understand your last statement.

A no. The text says to "fear" the Lord. That means a reverence, honour, respect and awe inspired fear. Check your hebrew.

"This tells us two things, one, God is a Tyrant and 2 is also the Devil or at least they have a civil relationship. Which would make God a tyrant too. I don’t even understand your last statement."

You are making judgements on an omnipotent being...I think that is above your paygrade. Also a tyrant is a human condition. Again..God does not fill the definition.
I am not surprised that you didn't understand.

Prayer changes things, it seems to me that you have not thought this Prayer thing through, consider the following and please correct me if I am wrong:

If there is a God, and all things are the will of God and God can not CHANGE his mind (because he is perfect) than what is the use of Prayer? If it is Gods will it will be done (or not done) your praying cannot make a difference if you cannot Change Gods mind about what you are praying for. If you can change Gods mind then God had to have made a mistake and thereby is changing his mind to make a correction. If the being you call God can make a mistake then what ever you call him it can not me God, not in the sense that God is perfect.

I am not a scholar I'm sure a few of you on this blog can reword my ranting into something more coherent for the believers.

No there isn't God already made those choices you have no say in it.

"Abrahamics" believe that their god created all of us and of course that includes the g-ay members of the human race. Also, those who have studied ho-mo-se-xuality have determined that there is no choice involved therefore ga-ys are ga-y because god made them that way.

    To wit:

o The Royal College of Psy-chiatrists stated in 2007:

“ Despite almost a century of psy-choanalytic and psy-chological speculation, there is no substantive evidence to support the suggestion that the nature of parenting or early childhood experiences play any role in the formation of a person’s fundamental heteros-exual or hom-ose-xual orientation. It would appear that s-exual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of ge-netic factors and the early ut-erine environment. Se-xual orientation is therefore not a choice.[60] "
"Garcia-Falgueras and Swaab state in the abstract of their 2010 study, "The fe-tal brain develops during the intraut-erine period in the male direction through a direct action of tes-tosterone on the developing nerve cells, or in the female direction through the absence of this hor-mone surge. In this way, our gender identi-ty (the conviction of belonging to the male or female gender) and s-exual orientation are programmed or organized into our brain structures when we are still in the womb. There is no indication that social environment after birth has an effect on gender ident–ity or s-exual orientation."[8

See also the Philadelphia Inquirer review “Gay Gene, Deconstructed”, 12/12/2011. Said review addresses the following “How do genes associated with ho-mose-xuality avoid being weeded out by Darwinian evolution?”

Of course, those gays who belong to Abrahamic religions abide by the rules of no adu-ltery or for-nication allowed.

And because of basic biology differences said monogamous ventures should always be called same-se-x unions not same-se-x marriages.
