My Take: Inside our scary, society-destroying family

Editor’s Note: Marci Weis is the chief operating officer at a healthcare consulting and care management company in Washington.  She is pursuing a Masters in Divinity degree for ordained ministry in the United Church of Christ.  Weis and her lesbian partner have been together more than 20 years and they have two daughters.

Washington's Senate could vote as early as today on a bill that would allow gay marriage in the Evergreen State. A House vote is expected within days. If it passes both chambers, Gov. Christine Gregoire has promised to sign it into law.

By Marci Weis, Special to CNN

"Mama, if it doesn’t pass, will we still be able to be a family?"

Those were the words of my then-7-year-old daughter on the night of the 2009 election. Over the prior months, sides had been chosen, harsh words had been hurled from all fronts, battle lines drawn. Up for vote was a referendum on whether Washington state would allow gay and lesbian couples to have several of the rights and responsibilities of legally married heterosexual couples.

      Most aren't angry.
Some merely feel the need to be on the defensive all the time due to some religious peoples repeated attempt to legislate based on their bible.
Some get a kick out of making the religious folks angry.
Some are also angry because their thoughts don't get nearly as much consideration from people as some others.

Per George R......"No Christian is happy to see somebody burn in hell. However, when people are so angry and blasphemous as the atheists on this belief blog, we don't feel sorry for you either."

Angry? I spent two days on another CNN article forum regarding a former bishop and his interpretation of the bible. I was called stupid, a moron, and ignorant....by Christians. And while we're at it, please define "blasphemous". Also, if you would like to see some anger, hate, and stupidity, and many other things that are not GOOD, Google the Westboro Baptist Church.

WR Stefon Diggs may be the most versatile player in the nation. He racked up 1,443 all-purpose yards, 13 touchdowns, 32 tackles and four interceptions as a senior, and should provide immediate depth at return man and receiver. He's set to declare on Feb. 10, and his top five consists of Auburn, Cal, Florida, Maryland and Ohio State. I hope Cal gets him. Good for the PAC 12, they have struggled with USC on the shelf. UCLA has a good recruiting class coming in so that will help.

    • God Isn't Evil, He just Isn't...

Jesus had to come live as a human and not sin until he payed the ransom price of his perfect life in place of Adam who sinned for us all. So what would have happened if Jesus had sinned? Or is it impossible for God to sin and if so, whats the point of having him live a sinless life as if that was such a great feat for someone who cannot sin...

      February 1, 2012 at 7:59 pm |
    • Jadugara

Wait,...how was Jesus' death "self sacrifice"? It's not like he nailed himself to the cross, or paid the Romans to do it... He kinda got hated on by the Jews of that time, betrayed by Judas, then nabbed by the Romans, publicly tortured and crucified, then stabbed with a spear for good measure...

Sounds like murder to me...and pre-meditated too, from the sound of it... Unless you're saying Jesus planned his own death on purpose, and made sure it was carried out, which I've heard defined as suicide, which according to Christianity is a sin punishable by damnation,...in which case Jesus would have been sent straight to hell...

      Is that what you're saying?

You're so full of crap HS.
Everyone knows the story about Jesus and the woman about to be stoned by the mob. This account is only found in John 7:53-8:12. The mob asked Jesus whether they should stone the woman (the punishment required by the Old Testament) or show her mercy. Jesus doesn’t fall for this trap. Jesus allegedly states, let the one who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone at her. The crowd dissipates out of shame. That story was not originally in the Gospel of John or in any of the Gospels. It was added by later scribes. The story is not found in the oldest and best manuscripts of the Gospel of John. Nor does its writing style comport with the rest of John. Most serious textual critics state that this story should not be considered part of the Bible.
