Catholic bishops group denounces contraception compromise

By Alan Silverleib, CNN

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops denounced President Barack Obama's compromise over whether to require religiously affiliated institutions to provide contraception to female employees, saying the proposal raises "serious moral concerns," according to a statement posted on its website late Friday.

"Today's proposal continues to involve needless government intrusion in the internal governance of religious institutions, and to threaten government coercion of religious people and groups to violate their most deeply held convictions," the statement said.

Under the new plan announced by Obama Friday, religiously affiliated universities and hospitals will not be forced to offer contraception coverage to their employees. Insurers will be required, however, to offer complete coverage free of charge to any women who work at such institutions. Women who work at churches, though, will have no guarantee of such contraception coverage - a continuation of current law.

News of the compromise came after days of escalating partisan and ideological rhetoric over the divisive issue. The White House originally wanted to require hospitals and schools with religious ties to offer full contraception coverage. Many Catholic leaders and other religious groups strongly oppose any requirement for contraception coverage on theological grounds.

Thank you for all the great discussion about God and the church. It's incredible that people don't use sense when looking at the church. They don't want people to have birth control because because the church wont grow. Why is your religion almost always a product of your upbringing much like your language? Because God is evil and picks who will be born into the right religion? The church is evil even if you believe in the Bible which was written by men put together by the Roman Empire and supported slavery and women as objects.

One does not need Planned Parenthood to teach our kids about s-ex. Simply read and have your kids read the following:

    WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!! ---–>

The failures of the widely used birth "control" methods i.e. the Pill ( 8.7% failure rate, one million unplanned pregnancies) and male con-doms (17.4% failure rate, another one million unplanned pregnancies ) have led to the large rate of abortions and S-TDs in the USA. Se-xually active teens, young adults and adults must either recognize their responsibilities by using the Pill or co-ndoms properly and/or use safer methods in order to reduce the epidemics of abortion and S-TDs.- Failure rate statistics provided by the Gut-tmacher Inst-itute.

Added information before making your next move:

    from the CDC-2006

"Se-xually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain a major public health challenge in the United States. While substantial progress has been made in preventing, diagnosing, and treating certain S-TDs in recent years, CDC estimates that approximately 19 million new infections occur each year, almost half of them among young people ages 15 to 24.1 In addition to the physical and psy-ch-ological consequences of S-TDs, these diseases also exact a tremendous economic toll. Direct medical costs as-sociated with STDs in the United States are estimated at up to $14.7 billion annually in 2006 dollars."

    And from:

    Consumer Reports, January, 2012

"Yes, or-al se-x is se-x, and it can boost cancer risk-

Here's a crucial message for teens (and all se-xually active "post-teeners": Or-al se-x carries many of the same risks as va-ginal se-x, including human papilloma virus, or HPV. And HPV may now be overtaking tobacco as the leading cause of or-al cancers in America in people under age 50.

"Adolescents don’t think or-al se-x is something to worry about," said Bonnie Halpern-Felsher professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. "They view it as a way to have intimacy without having 's-ex.'" (i.e. the Bill Clinton Syndrome)

Obviously, Planned Parenthood, parents and the educational system has failed on many fronts.

Hey "Reverend", tell that to wounded veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, and hear what THEY tell you.

      February 12, 2012 at 8:25 am |
    • Rev. Parson

Why not? Answered prayer is available and benefits everyone. The vast majority of our wounded veterans are men and women of faith. I believe they would be honored and thankful for our prayers, as we are thankful for their service.

      February 12, 2012 at 8:34 am |
    • Mirosal

Those who were faithful were praying they wouldn't get hurt.... looks like that call went to voicemail. Not a lot of them are thankful for their wounds. So this 'god' wanted them to get hurt, maimed or killed?

      February 12, 2012 at 8:40 am |
    • Rev. Parson

We honor our service men and women for their faith, service and sacrifice, why do you mock them?

      February 12, 2012 at 8:43 am |

I do not mock them, I AM ONE OF THEM. They are my brothers and sisters in arms, regardless of which service uniform they wear.

      February 12, 2012 at 8:47 am |
    • TruthPrevails

@Rev Parson: Mirosal is not mocking them. He is one of them. He served 20 years serving his countries Navy. Try a little respect for your service men.

      R Parsons,
If god knows that he intends to heal someone, why would you think he is waiting to hear "more" prayers, before he does what he knows he intends to do ?

    • just sayin

Jesus said there was no greater love than to lay down your life for a friend. He also modeled the self sacrificing prayer of all who serve when he said to his father (God) if it be possible spare me, never the less not my will but yours be done. Or when he said into your hands (God's) I commend my spirit. I will pray, remember and thank our service people also.

Mirosal is mocking and using the sacrifice of our military people for his own sick purposes. Whether or not he was one is irrelevant to what he is doing. Shame on him and shame on you for continually sticking your nose on where it don't belong. There's your sign

      February 12, 2012 at 8:58 am |
    • Rev. Parson

As Mirosal is clearly lost , I will pray for him, because we are told to pray for those who use us in spite. It is a shame he chooses to use the sacrifices of our military for spite as well.

Until CA and "rev" Parsons grow the balls it takes to put on a military uniform, their opinions are like dirty diapers .. always full of sh!t. Your 'gods' is supposed to be omniscient, right? So 'he' let those men and women get hurt or killed. At best, your 'god' does not exist. At worst, 'it' is the most malevolent THING ever ..... and it's safe to say that your deity is exactly like EVERY other deity throughout time.... just another myth, and in time, will die out. Like EVERY deity thus far.

      February 12, 2012 at 9:40 am |
    • An inconvenient truth

After review there is nothing to suggest that Mirosal using wounded veterans to advance his godless agenda is any different than a sleazy politician using the victims of 9/11 to advance their career.

**The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs.**

"No woman's health should depend on who she is or where she works or how much money she makes." – Barack Obama

Margaret Sanger, Planned Parenthood founder, had a different idea: “... the example of the inferior classes, the fertility of the feeble-minded, the mentally defective, the poverty stricken classes, should not be held up for emulation...”...[They’re] an unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born at all.”

PN must be desperate. Pulling out Margaret Sanger is pretty much the same as resorting to using "Hitler" in an argument about anything.

PN, you are not a woman and supporting children is not the same as carrying one in your own body. Until you realize that, and acknowledge that women have a right to decide when they will have children and how many they want, you have nothing of value to add.

98% of all catholic women use some form of contraception. That should have been the end of the debate but obviously not when the media gets involved. It is an issue that is after the wisdom of man and the spirit of this world and not after God (1 Cor. 2:4-6).

For a better understanding of the history of the Catholic Church and all its deceptions, we invite you to read the articles ‘The Mystery Babylon’ and Popes and the Princes of This World’ listed on our website http://www.aworlddeceived.ca

Since Obama opened Pandora’s Box on this issue, we also invite you to read the article ‘Barack Obama ~ President of the United States of America’.

All of the other pages and articles listed on our website explain the deep hidden mysteries of God and how and by whom this whole world has been deceived as confirmed in Revelation 12:9.

The Word of God is God (John1:1), it is truth and there is no lie in it (Hebrews 6:18).

      ........

You don't know what spirit you are of as you are spiritually blind (Luke 9:55).

For this reason our message remains the same: Ye must repent and turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan (whose spirit you are of) unto God (Acts 26:18).

You judge after the flesh (John 8:15), the believers judge after the spirit of man. Even though we don't know your name, we know you and what spirit you are of (Luke 9:55).

He that is spiritual judgeth (discerneth) all things, yet he himself is judged of no man (1 Cor. 2:15).

It's time to get down to the roots of this problem / debate: it is all about the dominator paradigm – which is all about power and control (especially the domination and control of women). Read Dr. Eisler's book "The Chalice & The Blade". The Catholic Church is one of the primary agents of this paradigm. The American right-wing is part of it. The "other" is always demonized. Power, wealth, the destruction of the Earth, and violence are at the center of this paradigm - they all hide behind the cloak of religion but their smug self-righteousness always gives them away. I wish they had as much concern for the children they've harmed - the "Bishops" have paid out over 2 billion dollars to their victims so far - and they still have the gall to oppress women in every way they can. They have no right to pretend they have any moral authority whatsover.

Either you are simple minded or you are part of the deception. Have you ever know the insurance industry to offer coverage to anyone for anything for FREE? So who pays for it? The cost of this insurance will be added to the premiums that religious organizations have to pay for their insurance and the contraceptive benefits will then be offered to their employees. So it is just a SCAM and a slap in the face to the American liberty of freedom of religion.

      February 11, 2012 at 9:39 am |
    • Flinders, the butler

No Dan, YOU are simple minded. The church chooses to exist in a society where they accept ALL the benefits of the society. There is NO way to remain "pristine" and "above" EVERY possible moral "shade of grey". That is infantile. Of course there are complications. Catholic women WANT to be able to use BC. The bishops are loosing their power, THAT is what this is about. No one cares about what the old men in red dresses do or say. They lost their moral authority in the pedophile scandals. NO ONE CARES, except those desperately hanging on to their Medieval world view.

Prayer fucks up your knees and your neck and your back.
Prayer can cause heart attacks, especially among the elderly.
Prayer reveals how stupid you are to the world.
Prayer exposes your backside to pervert priests.
Prayer makes you think doilies are exciting.
Prayer makes your kids avoid spending time with you.
Prayer prevents you from getting badly needed exercise.
Prayer makes you frothy like Rick Santorum. Just google him to find out.
Prayer dulls your senses and prevents you from thinking.
Prayer makes you even more fat than you already were.
Prayer makes you post really stupid shit.
      Prayer makes you hoard cats.
Prayer makes you smell like shitty kitty litter and leads you on to harder drugs.
      Prayer wastes time.

    • Nope

*The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs."""""`~~~~

just lying, prove that "God gave man science." You have been asked repeatedly to do so and you either can't or won't. Which is it?

tom tom all the proofs and evidences were given to you weeks ago, it is not necessary to repeat myself to you. If you are unable to understand what you were told it is not my fault, your elevator stops well short of the top floor. Sympathy extended to you for your infirmity.

No, nitwit, no "proof" of anything has ever been posted by you or anyone else, because there isn't any. Your stupidity is astounding.

It is amusing, though, to watch just lying twisting in the wind attempting to appear sentient. Especially since it is compelled to answer every post I write to it.

I would agree, except that I find my cat gives more intelligent responses than whatever this thing is that calls itself just sayin.

And my cat is dumber than a bag of hair.

Although he is lovable, which is more than anyone can say about a boob like just sayin.

I don't understand why catholics put up with this nonsense from their leaders. Maybe it's because I'm not a catholic.

I'm not a Catholic either. But those who joined the Catholic church promised to follow Catholic doctrine, including direction from their leaders. Its not intended to be a democracy or grouping of agnostics and do-it-yourself theologians. There's no pick-and-choose option. So for Catholics, choosing contraception or abortion is equivalent to claiming that some sins aren't really sins and needn't be confessed, contrary to the teachings of the church they chose to join.

I don't understand why anyone would chose to be catholic. It has always seemed to me that catholic doctrine tries to put as many humans as possible between a worshiper and their god. Kind of like the bureaucratic tendency to create pointless middle management. Is there anything in the bible to indicate the need of that much human interference?

Most DON'T choose, tallulah13. Indoctrination occurs soon after birth.

What I do know is that the Catholics with whom I am acquainted all got vasectomies after they'd had all the children they wanted and could afford. Guess they're all going straight to hell.

      Except it doesn't exist.
