After Anne Frank baptism, Mormons vow to discipline members

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Reacting to a report that well-known Holocaust victim Anne Frank had been baptized by proxy in a Mormon temple, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints says it is committed to disciplining members of its church who conducted such baptisms, which violate church policy.

Word of the Frank baptism came a week after the issue of Mormon posthumous proxy baptism of Jews attracted national attention. This controversy surfaced after it was reported that the dead parents of Jewish Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal had been baptized in a Mormon temple.

The church apologized for that baptism, blaming it on a technical glitch in its system for submitting names for posthumous proxy baptism.

“It takes a good deal of deception and manipulation to get an improper submission through the safeguards we have put in place,” LDS Church spokesman Michael Purdy said in a statement Tuesday, responding to the report about the Anne Frank baptism.

Explainer: How and why do Mormons baptize the dead?

Though the church regularly conducts proxy baptisms for dead, in what it calls an attempt to give everyone a chance to accept salvation through Jesus, it has a 1990s-era policy against conducting such baptisms for Holocaust victims.

The policy was adopted after complaints from Jewish groups, which said it was offensive to conduct Mormon baptisms for Holocaust victims who were killed because of their Jewish faith.

“The Church keeps its word and is absolutely firm in its commitment to not accept the names of Holocaust victims for proxy baptism,” said Purdy in his Tuesday statement.

The church said it is “committed to taking action against individual abusers by suspending the submitter’s access privileges,” the statement continued. “We will also consider whether other Church disciplinary action should be taken.”

According to Helen Radkey, a former Mormon who tracks Mormon posthumous proxy baptisms, the one for Anne Frank was conducted on Saturday in the Dominican Republic.

If heaven and salvation are one's objective, why bother existing?
The fact that we take LDS seriously is not completely absurd, but it is silly. I'm of a people who the "mormons" believe are jewish,... I am Mohawk and I assure you our history, which extends thousands of years beyond the jewish religion, does not include jesus.
I do not take offense because I believe only the Stupid take offense when confronted with ignorance.

    Only for the newbies:---------->

Putting the final kibosh on religion to include Mormonism in less than 1500 words.

    • There was probably no Abraham i.e. the foundations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam are non-existent.

    • There was probably no Moses i.e the pillars of Judaism, Christianity and Islam have no strength of purpose.

    • There was no Gabriel i.e. Islam fails as a religion. Christianity partially fails.

    • There was no Easter i.e. Christianity completely fails as a religion.

    • There was no Moroni i.e. Mormonism is nothing more than a business cult.

    • Sacred/revered cows, monkey gods, castes, reincarnations and therefore Hinduism fails as a religion.

    • Fat Buddhas here, skinny Buddhas there, reincarnated Buddhas everywhere makes for a no on Buddhism.

A quick Google, Bing or Yahoo search will put the kibosh on any other groups calling themselves a religion.

    e.g. Taoism

"The origins of Taoism are unclear. Traditionally, Lao-tzu who lived in the sixth century is regarded as its founder. Its early philosophic foundations and its later beliefs and rituals are two completely different ways of life. Today (1982) Taoism claims 31,286,000 followers.

Legend says that Lao-tzu was immaculately conceived by a shooting star; carried in his mother's womb for eighty-two years; and born a full grown wise old man. "

Crazy Mormons trying to spread their nonsense again! Thankfully, Anne Frank is already dead and doesn't have to bear this disgrace on top of the horrible death she endured. I wonder if Mormons have yet figured out the real use for magnets...

Discontinuing proxy baptisms doesn't change what Mormons think of the rest of the world.

"Well, we were just trying to save your worthless heathen soul from eternal damnation, and this is the thanks we get? If you want to burn in hell for all eternity, fine, we won't save you anymore. You're still a worthless heathen though."

The Holocaust was/is real and the Mormons need to stop "baptising" people outside of their religion. Of course what goes around comes around and they'll have lots of explaining to do.

I wish all religions would leave me alone. Muslims want to blow me up, but Christians want to infest goverment with religion and control my life. Hmmmm, which is worse? An unlikely explosion, or daily attacks by christians?

Who cares? Baptise away. To me as an atheist, a religious person "threatening" to baptise me is the same as a hippe threatening to punch me in my aura.

Agreed, I am an athiest as well as you can only end up in hell if you believe in hell, since I don't believe and will just turn to dust with the rest of mankind, a pit of eternal burning pain isnt much a threat to me.

    • Craig

      Gary,
Even if I believed in hell, which I don't, going there wouldn't bother me. The modern invention of hell as a place of hellfire and suffering is just that, a modern invention. The only thing the bible says about hell is that it is a state of being without god's grace. I already live my life without god's grace, so it wouldn't be a change for me. And besides, the "light bringer" is down there, and who wouldn't want to party in the afterlife with someone who rebelled against a petty, jealous pyschopath like the christian god?

Mormons are the ONLY church that practice baptism of the dead. The dead DO NOT need to be baptized!!!! It's a cult practice! They don't think, because they have been brainwashed by Joseph Smith. Baptism during life is the ONLY baptism that is ever needed!

    February 23, 2012 at 10:00 am |
    • Skeptical

This practice makes more sense to me than the popular belief that all the Chinese, Indians, and others who have not heard of Christ will burn in hell. Their only fault, being born in the wrong place...that whole belief is nonsense and is very un-Christ like.

Sprinkling water and spouting mumbo jumbo blah blah blah nonsense is not needed by anyone. Just silly ritual bee ess to ancient mythology.

      February 23, 2012 at 10:05 am |
    • notbobslc

      No baptism is ever needed

necro-baptismal is even less needed, the church uses it to increase its membership count which they claim to be 13 million but is really more like 5 million

I'm always astounded by the numbers of people who believe in magic...say these words, dip into this water, pray in this position, etc, all of them are magic. This sprinkling of water does not, and never has had, any implication on life. These people are obviously trying to do what they think is right, but they've been led far, far astray from reality.

The problem with the Mormon Church is that they're running out of new followers among the living. So where does that leave you?

    February 23, 2012 at 9:57 am |
    • Bhoss

last i checked they were one of the fastest growing religions.

      February 23, 2012 at 10:00 am |
    • Get the Facts

The LDS church is the fastest growing religion in the United States. There are approximately 250,000 convert baptisms every year (this excludes baptisms for children baptized in the church because their parents are members). There are 55,000 full-time missionaries currently serving. Also, the church does not count baptisms for the dead on its member rolls.

I would imagine the growth of the church threatens other Christian churches, which is the cause of so much contempt against the faith by Evangelicals.

      February 23, 2012 at 10:03 am |
    • Patrick

Bhoss is correct, but that is easy when you start claiming all the dead people who can’t saw no.

Your white sheet is showing. I suppose you're ready to ship the African Americans back to Africa, too, right? No problem. And after you've sent everyone back from whence they came, you can get on the last boat. Because the Native Americans are ready for your white @ss to be gone. Stupid racist. Oh, and by the way, you DO realize that Jesus was a Jew, right? Because I can smell your radical Christianity from here. A TRUE Christian is not anti ANY religion. So crawl back into whatever white-trash whole you live in with your in-bred family, drink some more cheap whiskey, watch some Jerry Springer and leave the rest of us alone.

    Question for Mormons......

How would you like it if people from the Church of Satan started baptizing dead Mormons? What you are doing is no different. If these people wanted to join your cult they would have done it while they were alive. What a presumptuous bunch of twits these Mormons are.

Jennifer, obviously you're late for your medication. I hate to tell you but the holocaust decimated the Jewish population in Europe and the US was complicit in it by turning refugee ships away. Don't you have a a KKK shroud to knit and sell? Lol

You make such a perfect racist.

Jennifer: Every single day in public places? Really? because I walked through town today and not a single person tried to shove the Holocaust down my throat! yesterday either!

Oh wait, I get it, you were lying in an attempt to give your disgusting, sub-human hatemongering anti-semetism some whif of justification.

Jennifer, so we should remove all history classes?

The Holocaust was a big part of history. Should we not talk about the Crusades? Should we not talk about World War I and World War II? History is an important subject. You can't only cover the good. You need to cover the bad too.

When your brother/husband comes back from filling up the trailer, make sure he shows Jr. how to properly reload the shotgun when you go out hunting for supper again.

      February 23, 2012 at 10:01 am |
    • Deej59

Jennifer, their "cr*p holocaust" was a gruesome, systematic murder of six million human beings. They continue to be persecuted for their faith today, and there's a lot of hateful, dangerous rhetoric thrown at them in this and any other countries every day. Your comment dismisses an unthinkable amount of suffering. I suspect you'd feel very differently if your own religion or race were threatened every day. The way you worded that makes you sound like a hateful Klan member. Pretty gross, Jennifer.

      February 23, 2012 at 10:01 am |
    • Jennifer

Joe T: If you are going to discuss any type of holocaust, talk about ALL holocausts occured (Esp. in 20th century) and not only focus on the Jewish one.... Jews are our enemies and should not be treated any different from others!

Jennifer, im quite sure that being a product of an incestuous relationship may have clouded your judgement, but you really should think this through. You certainly cant blame those Jews for your decision to marry your sibling. If you werent illiterate i would tell you to read up on the subject when your laying in bed with your husband/brother.

What religion was Jesus again? Can you say it through your hood Jennifer? It is most unfortunate that the chromosomes meant for your brain were ingested by your mother.

      February 23, 2012 at 10:13 am |
    • why2

@Jennifer, what did a Jew do to you personally? How can we be your enemy? I do not hurt people, I do not teach others to hate, and I do discuss the Holocaust in my literature classes as it is part of the curriculum as is other historical information. I also point out all the other modern holocausts of today. The Holocaust was not just about Jewish people being murdered but it was also about others being murdered. When bigotry rules, people die. The article was about a Christian faith baptizing a young Jewish girl who died in the Holocaust and how wrong it was to do that. No one was shoving the Holocaust down your throat; however, if half of your family was killed by a group of people, you would most likely talk about it for a long time. I hope that never happens to your family, so please do not wish it on my family again.

      @jennifer
17 million people were slaughtered in the Nazi Holocaust – other twentieth century atrocities pale in comparison.
Hitler slew gypsies, hom.ose.xuals, soviet and polish civilians, the handicapped, Jehovah's witnesses and pretty much anyone who disagreed with him.
The Jewish victims get more attention becuase the Third Reich was very nearly successful in its attempted Genocide of the semitic race. Fully 2/3rds of European Jews were tortured and killed.
Everybody knew he was intent on killing them ALL – he announced it again and again, after all – but few people spoke against it.
Imagine if a government made it policy that they were going to kill every member of your race, started rounding you all up and herding you into abbatoirs – and nobody in the world bothered to try and stop it until it was almost too late.
Do you think you might carry a bit of a grudge after watching your entire family murdered in the brutal way possible?
