Franklin Graham apologizes for questioning Obama's faith commitment

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - The Rev. Franklin Graham on Tuesday apologized for publicly raising questions about President Barack Obama’s Christian faith, saying “I regret any comments I have ever made which may have cast any doubt on the personal faith of our president, Mr. Obama.”

The statement from Graham came in response to a letter from faith leaders associated with the NAACP that said Graham’s statements “have enormous negative effects for America and are especially harmful to the Christian witness.”

In a television interview last week that provoked huge media attention, Graham appeared to question the sincerity of Obama’s Christian commitment.

"You have to ask him,” Graham said, pondering whether Obama is Christian. “I cannot ask that question for anybody."

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

In the  February 21 interview on MSNBC, Graham repeated earlier statements about Obama’s ties to Islam, while denying that the president is a Muslim.

"Under Islamic law – Sharia law – Islam sees him as a son of Islam," Graham said. “Because his father was a Muslim, his grandfather was a Muslim. ... That's just the way it works."

In their Tuesday letter to Graham, the NAACP faith leaders, which included the presidents of the National Baptist Convention USA and the National Baptist Convention of America, took aim at the MSNBC interview.

“We were disturbed and disappointed by statements … that questioned whether President Obama is a Christian,” the letter said. “Rev. Graham also seemed to imply that the president may be a Muslim, despite the fact that the president has repeatedly expressed his faith and belief in Jesus Christ.”

In his statement on Tuesday, Graham said, “The president has said he is a Christian and I accept that (and have said so publicly on many occasions).”

“I apologize to him and to any I have offended for not better articulating my reason for not supporting him in this election—for his faith has nothing to do with my consideration of him as a candidate,” Graham’s statement continued.

Graham, an evangelical Christian who is the son of evangelist Billy Graham, also rejected the idea of voting for a candidate on the basis of a shared religious faith.

“I would support a Mormon or a Jew who supported the defense of marriage defined as being between a man and a woman over a Southern Baptist or Presbyterian who did not,” he said.

In the MSNBC interview, Graham said most Christians would "not recognize Mormonism" as part of Christianity in response to a question about whether Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, a Mormon, is a Christian.

Franklin Graham is a disgrace to his fathers legacy and to true Christianity. If it weren't for his fathers coattails, he'd be rotting away in some bar or coke den somewhere. He proved himself to be more un-Christianlike than he suggested Obama was. He's nothing but a two-bit huckster.

It is unfortunate that Reverend Graham apologized, In my bible is says"by their fruits you shall know them". I cannot question Mr. Obama so I must rely on what I read, and what I read shows me a fence sitter. A politician that does not want to alienate the voters, whichever side of the fence they may be found. I pray for our country daily and recognize that Jehovah has placed Barack Huesein Obama as president over us for his own good and valid reasons.

i just can't fathom how any politician whether religious or not can say "i'm sorry" and mean it when all they do is lie, lie about the lies, and then lie to get out of being caught in those lies!
      so fuc.k em!

and then being religious while being a politician is an oxy-moron...live by the tenets of thou shall not ______(insert bs here) ...then do anything you can to maintain the power of being in the public life as a politician! please!!! nothing more hypocritical then that! very humble in deed! and theres your pun! 🙂

Just because i share his image doesn't mean i share his character. No he won't send you to hell, that's why Jesus died for you, so you don't have to go to hell. You just have to believe on him and repent. He did the rest. God can clean you and your foul language up. You're a very angry person. He can give you peace and joy.

If you're talking about moses tablets, 10. God is not a racist. He loves all races of people. He created them. He is not biased. He is only biased against sin.

      February 29, 2012 at 9:38 am |
    • hippypoet

wrong – there is 611 commandments... god is biased towards women....and god has a CHOSEN people, which means you are going completely on the hope that god will let you in when you die (@ssuming god is real) and it also means that god is biased towards all races of people since he chose only one to be "HIS" chosen people.

and YES god is petty or why else did he kick adam and eve out of the garden?
god being a god would have no concern over his creation having knowledge of things...right? i mean why would god take issue with us knowing things? thats right, the more we know the less we need god and thats a bad thing! petty!

To exist in eternity with God there are vital character traits that are required. Those values, like faith can only be acquired in this life. There is every opportunity afforded mankind to receive from God through Jesus Christ all that a person needs to live the next life eternally with God. If a person chooses to ignore what is so freely available to them, and is unprepared for eternity, it is not Gods fault. There are only two eternal destinations for mankind, every individual freely chooses where to end up.

There were 10 on the tablets given to Moses. God loves women just as much as he does men. God operates in a hierarchy, where men answer to him and wives answer to their husband and are submissive to their husbands. That is for the good of the family unit. Yes he has a chosen people, chosen to bring forth his Son, chosen to be a blessing to ALL mankind and so that ALL mankind can be grafted into the bride of Christ. Not chosen because they are "better" than you. Remember the holocaust? Would you like to have been the "chosen" then? They suffer and are hated more than any other race because they are "chosen." I go on the truth of his Word and the promise that I can have eternal life with Him John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son (to suffer for me in my place for my sins) that whosoever believes on him shall not perish but have everlasting life. Would you give your son for a people who despise and profane your name like he did. He did that for YOU. He let his son be tortured beyond anything you can imagine, and nailed to a cross left to suffer and die so you could be in Heaven with him one day. That is how much he loves you. Oh he's very real and you know it. That is what draws you to this site year after year. Everytime I come here which is few and far between, I find you here. Your soul is searching for it's Father and Creator, "the ultimate lover of your soul." Stop fighting it and let him in.

and YES god is petty or why else did he kick adam and eve out of the garden?

Hippy.... and to answer the ones I missed. God is not petty. If he was petty we would all be dead today. He kicked Adam and Eve out of the garden for their sin, their choice. Jesus told his disciples to forgive 70 x 7. Does that sound petty to you? They did it to themselves when they allowed Satan to trick them, just like the many that won't make it to heaven because they have willfully listened to the lies of satan and chose his way over God's way when he has repeatedly tried to warn us. If God was petty do you really think that he would not be back for his children right now? Look at the evil and sin in this world. If he was looking for an excuse to just burn us for fun don't you think that we have given him all he needs at this very second. He is waiting for us, giving us a chance to come to him. He is full of grace and mercy. He wishes that none should perish. He has given us great knowledge. Look at today's technology. All knowledge from God. The more we know they more God has allowed us to know. Without God you couldn't take you next breath much less find a cure for a disease. It's all God breathed.

well first, the Lucifer story is only as old as the middle ages...second Lucifer was gods right hand man, angel if you wish, whose job was to temp man from gods path – that was his job, to test us low creatures....that is petty!

god destoryed the world with water because HE failed to create a creation that would follow rules...what kind of god fails at creating something that won't follow its rules to the point of global destruction/cleansing? again, petty.

and no one can say with full honesty that Moses had tablets at all never mind how many commandments were on them – the answer of how many commandments are there is 611 maybe 613 i get confused...no worries. – there is so many things that you believers don't adhere to in the bible why should you concern yourself with the other 600 right?!?!?!

heres a question, why do christians even have commandments in the first place – its in he jewish part of the bible, before jesus ie not christian!

Lucifer was the Anointed Cherub bestowed with Gods divine favor and appointed to a special place. God had given him a certain amount of power and authority which he perverted and wanted to exalt himself above God... rather than "just" being the Angel of God. He was perfect in beauty and the chief musician of God. "Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee." He made a free will choice to rebel. He wasn't created to rebel.
"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north"
God destroyed the world by flood because the bloodline that was to bring forth the savior of the world was being defiled by Satan. Only Noah was pure in all his generations. Satan attempted to taint the pure bloodline so that YOUR savior couldn't be born.
And you can't say for sure that Moses didn't have tablets! Us believers can't adhere to everything in the Bible, ALL HAVE SINNED. That is what Jesus died for. Quoting the bible and being a trivia god won't get you to heaven. I'm sure there will be people there that never read the Bible, just heard and believed.
There are commandments because God has standards. He is holy and he commands us to be holy and when we mess us his son's sacrifice is there for the remission of our sins.

you are becoming preachy instead of having a back and forth conversation... you didn't answer any of my questions nor did you provide anything to be used as an argument for my @ssertion that satan is a creation of the middle ages and its need for a reason why such horrors have befallen them and they didn't want it to be god that did these things so...

i am good at trivia sure, but i know things for a reason not just to spew and see the water turn. knowledge is what makes me a non believer vs believer who takes much on faith and dies with hope of an afterlife in there eyes as they turn grey and lifeless! its a sad pathic wish game that is for children, accecpting truth which is that all that lives dies and thats the way of the world is an adult game...go back three spaces and lose your next turn! place wishes in the discard pile – do not reshuffle!

hippypoet...what was your question? Is God petty. No, you're still alive and profaning him so NO. That better? I don't go on your assertions, I go on facts and fact is the Bible prophecy so far has been 100% accurate and I have no reason to believe that the remaining prophecy won't be also. You live evil you reap evil. Simple enough? Again I say, your earthly knowledge don't amount to a hill of beans unless God gives you breath. What hope do you die with? That you can stop habitually visiting the religion blog when you're grey? Your destiny sounds a log more sad and pathetic than mine. God did say that it takes the faith of a little child to enter the kingdom of heaven, so you're right on that one. I'll follow the children there thank you. You go HOPE you just turn grey if you chose to believe that lie. What's really waiting for you is definately not child's play. As a matter of fact the adult you think you are will wish he had listened to the little children like me.

      deflection and redirection...good stuff!

my questions are still posted above for you to answer to the best of your abilities.

i think i may have put you off, for that i am sorry. i find that being honest carries with it less positive response then lies do... no worries. 🙂

the only answer so far is "is god petty" and your answer seems to be dependent upon me being alive and therefore god is not petty...not sure that makes sense to anyone but you- i need some clearification on this one. god would first have to exist for me to fear him taking my life away, and that in itself would not make god petty...god concerning itself with creatures he created and getting angered due to them is petty...its equal to ants in a ant farm making the owner mad due to how they wish to live compared to how you wish they would! sad really, but i await your answers with a clearification on god and its pettiness! 🙂

I have answered all your questions. God is not petty. I answered about the flood thing, all of it. He was not petty he was saving your neck from hell! What other questions do you have that you REALLY want answers to. One minute you don't want an answer cause there is not God then you ask about someone else life that God took. Make up your mind is he real of not? That's your choice. Why do you believe there was a flood that he caused if you don't believe there is a God? Show your education and quit playing.

    • hippypoet

lol, again with deflection but this time you lack the redirection – too bad.

one can't have a proper argument with a delusional person unless one uses the delusion as a basis for the argument – stem questions from it, stem conclusions from it...very straight forward thought pattern.

god is not real, the GLOBAL flood never happened, and jesus was just a delusional schizophrenic in a long line of delusional schizophrenics who left him a legacy of delusions to base his off of... The legacy is known today as jewish mysticism, jesus was after all a jew and he grew up like every other jew did – by learning his culture and history of his people – they keep records, RELIGIOUSLY! lol

oh and i quit playing when i was 7, that was my age of reasoning...have you hit yours yet or do you still live in a world of fantasy with angels flying over head and satan whispering in your ear!?!?!?!

Hippy...you're so clever....You have made all your conclusions and they are all wrong. Why are you obsessed with a religion blog if God is not real. Why don't you hang out on an atheist blog or a satanist blog and argue with them that Satan is not real? Why do you care what is posted here year after year you keep coming back for more because He is the missing link in your life. You think you are so smart but you have proven nothing EVER. It proves that deep down you do believe God is real and you are still a rebellious child playing games? I come here from time to time to see if you are still up to it. keep searching, he promises if we seek we shall find. Every knee shall bow.....even the famous hippeypoet.

hippey... it's not about denomination, it's about a saving relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I am Christian but many call themselves Christian and don't share my biblical beliefs, like Obama. I am a sinner, far from perfect, never claimed to be, never will be. Only by his blood can my sins be forgiven. You're passionate about your non-belief and I am about my belief. My flesh sins, but I know the savior and seek forgiveness. I don't need your sin list. I've got the Holy Spirit for that and believe me he convicts me daily when I sin, thanks anyway.

      February 29, 2012 at 1:47 pm |
    • hippypoet

It is the job and purpose of every christian to bring the message of jesus and to proselytize all peoples...you failed to convert me. That means you are a failure. And yes, you do need my list of sins unless of course you are claiming that the holy spirit talks to you – how else would you be able to know which sins you committed and understand how, that is the only way one can be truly repented...you can no better then me say sorry for actions you had no knowledge of nor understanding of. Some of the worst horrors in history have been committed with the best of intentions – think about it.

And for your information, if i was to believe in THIS god, i would be a follower of the jewish system of belief – more reverence and meaning to things. If not then i;d be a muslim for the same reasons...but i would never be a christian, its like god-lite but still as extreme in your devotion as the most devout jew or muslim....confusing really!

"Forgive me from all my sins" is sufficient. If there is one specific one that he wants me to confess he will bring it to my mind. Yes he does talk to me. Only to believers when you accept Jesus that's why you can't hear him. He only talks to non-believers to call them to repentance and after a while if you don't accept Jesus he is a gentleman and he leaves you alone. You keep the list, the holy spirit is with me always. I may lose your list.

Having reviewed the "Morning Joe" piece that he was in, the interviewers really grilled him on Obama and Obama's faith, when the purpose of Franklin Graham being there should have been about the political activity between America and countries where his team is working.

Instead, because elections are hot right now, the interviewers grilled him on Barack Obama's, Rick Santorum's, and Franklin Graham's faith. The topic of Samaritan's Purse working in Sudan barely made the radar in this piece.

And we had a saying, it it looks like a serpent, crawls like a serpent and strikes like a serpent, it is a serpent! Take your Bible and take Obama's life, political and religious, and compare the two and the serpent will be revealed.

Wouldn't it be better to concentrate on your on life and personal failings rather than spending time judging others? Let your Christianity shine through your actions, rather than your judgmental words.

dave....no what is important is the truth. to defend the truth and stand for the truth instead of hide in my closet scared to stand for what it good and true cause it may offend someone. I hope it offends them to the point of researching it and finding truth! I can't witness in a closet only worried about myself.

I'm not running around waving the Christian flag pushing for the killing of innocent babies, elderly, encouraging sodomy, etc. etc. etc...... It's time some of us speak out against the lies and evil being committed in the name of Jesus. Jesus does not stand for anything Obama stands for period and I don't care who don't like it. It's not judging, it's called seeing the lies that are destroying our nation and families and children and not being afraid to stand for the TRUE GOD AND JESUS CHRIST and not turning my head like all the others while people suffer and die and the name of my Lord and Savior is profaned! Don't like it? Don't read it!

Dave....and by the way, it is my life, it is my county, it is my tax dollars, it is my children, and most importantly JESUS IS MY GOD, so it is my business. When he decided to run our country his way and expects our votes to do it, he made his life and religion our business. When my sins are affecting you and your family and children and your money etc. etc. etc. like his is mine then get back with me.

C'mon truth, play the same comparison game but with at least some objectivity here. Pres. Obama, prior to his career in politics was a community organizer (much like your Jesus) working with the poor and disenfranchised to make their world and futures better. Look at Mr. Graham – a deadbeat drug addict that fell into his fathers business, conning people for their money. I see a serpent, but it's Mr. Graham. Mr. Graham exposed his lack of Christianity and deserved to be called on it.

Get your eyes off of the Grahams and get it on Jesus. Does Obama's life line up with the word of God. NOT!

"Does Obama's life line up with the word of God. NOT!"

Actually it does. I guess we're just reading from a different book if you can honestly say that a con man like Graham is more representative of Christianity.

Please, enlighten us all because you seem to have the inside line – what specifically has Pres. Obama done that is not in line with Christs teachings?

  11. Reality

    Only for the newbies:

Graham and his father should first apologize for ripping off their "non-profits" with their combined salaries of $1.2 million/yr.

And they have the audacity to call themselves Christians !!!!!

    February 29, 2012 at 8:15 am |
    • Truth=Jesus

Whether they did or didn't doesn't make Obama a Christian. They are people, put your faith in Jesus.

Truth, if you and Franklin Graham are representative of your Jesus, I think I'll stand by Obama's side. He's more of a reflection of the Jesus I learned about.

The Reverend Graham is an embarrassment to his father and to himself. He knows what he said and why. no one should have any respect for such a person, in his capacity, to spew such garbage about our President, or anyone else.

This druggie dose'nt get it. He claims to be a christian, he needs to stay out of this. He has lost all credibility amongst those of us to whom his father preached abd means so much to us.

  14. Brad

This piece of human indignity uses news-media will mouth unchristian hate that slash the political and moral fabric of our society only to get some media attention and keep his creepy-preach business profitable.
He has done it several times before, will do so again. Him taking a week to apologize for hateful bigotry makes it clear that he will use his 'apology' for gaining a spot on the next news-cycle, too.
Fraud son of a fraud Graham, this freeze-dried liar has never been touched by the purity called Christ.

–The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs.

I would be proud to be called a non-christian by this piece of garbage wrapped in skin. Who needs his hateful christianity?

    February 29, 2012 at 5:44 am |
  19. Gus

Graham apologizes again for doing the same thing over and over. He articulated his false witness exactly the way he wanted, then lied in the cover up. No amount of pious BS can hide his purely political speech.

    February 29, 2012 at 5:21 am |
  20. Anti-Jesus

You mean to say that one of the over 38 THOUSAND christian sects can't call one of the over 37 THOUSAND, 9 hundred and 99 other christian denominations non-christian?

What a novel idea. Let's repaint christian divide as unity an sing kumbaya and make it all better in the name of making christian divide not look so effin'g ridiculously absurd.

    Waaaay to ggggooooooo!
