Hebrew atheist billboard gets bumped in New York

By Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor

(CNN)–A controversial billboard from a national atheist group was scheduled to go up in a heavily populated Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn on Tuesday but was bumped when the owner of the building objected to the advertisement.

CNN first reported the billboards were targeting Muslim and Jewish enclaves with, “You know it’s a myth … and you have a choice,” written on billboards in Arabic and Hebrew.

The Brooklyn billboard was in English and Hebrew. To the right of the text on the Hebrew sign is the word for God, Yahweh.

American Atheists president David Silverman said he went to the Brooklyn location when the billboard was scheduled to be put up with reporters and was surprised to see it was not being erected. “We sat there and watched and the billboard didn't go up,” he said. "The Jewish landlord of the building saw the billboard and refused to let it go up," he said.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Silverman said it was a clear case of religious bigotry. "It was very disappointing to me because I was raised Jewish," he said by phone from New York. "They've been the victims of religious bigotry and now they're the purveyors."

When reached by phone, Kenneth Stier the owner of the building that rejected the billboard in the heavily Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, offered a polite “no comment” on the matter.

Silverman said the billboard has been moved out of the residential area and put up in a pricier spot off a major highway at no additional cost. He added that while it was nice to have more visibility, his group was specifically targeting that Brooklyn neighborhood.

Jim Cullinan, vice president for marketing & communications for Clear Channel told CNN in an e-mail, “We found space for both ads and this contract is being fulfilled,” but would not comment on moving the billboard out of the residential area in Brooklyn.

“It is against our policy to comment on any of our advertisers' campaigns,” he wrote.

Silverman said he was disappointed by the development. “We wanted to get into the residential neighborhood because so many Hasidic are closeted atheists,” he said.

He said they received over a dozen e-mails from closeted atheist Hasidim who thought they were alone until news of the ad campaign broke.

"This is why atheists need to come out of the closet," Silverman said.

Silverman again reiterated the signs advertise the American Atheists’ upcoming convention and an atheist rally, called the Reason Rally, in Washington scheduled for April.

Atheists have long pointed to surveys that suggest atheists and agnostics make up between 3% and 4% of the U.S. population. That number increases when Americans unaffiliated with any religion are included. The Pew Center’s U.S. Religious Landscape Survey found that 16% are unaffiliated, though only a fraction of those are avowed atheists and agnostics.

Silverman told CNN last week he knew that the pair of new billboards will cause a stir.

“People are going to be upset,” he said. “That is not our concern.”

“We are not trying to inflame anything,” he continued. “We are trying to advertise our existence to atheist in those communities. The objective is not to inflame but rather to advertise the atheist movement in the Muslim and Jewish community.”

CNN's Dan Merica contributed to this report.

Yes agree that Atheism is just another invented Religion that calls for Worshipping Men rather than GOD...! Look up every Atheist or Communist you will find out they some how worship Idologies that been put by some leading Men...another thing you will find that those Idolized deceased Men are kept mummified for Worshipers to visit them..
Isn't that just like the stolen catholic heart or the late Pope's blood....! Isn't that just a Man's Religion....?
Am sure in the long run Mr.Silverman is longing tobe worshiped for turning the table against the GOD religions...

Wow! Are you really that stupid? Or just a pathological liar?

Let's start with the definition of religion: "the service and worship of God or the supernatural." Nope, that doesn't fit atheism at all. You are lying, liar.

"calls for Worshipping Men" – what the hell are you talking about? I have NEVER heard an atheist insist we worship anything, much less men. And you do not capitalize "worshpping" or "men". You are lying, liar.

You talk about atheists and communists as if they are the same. That is another lie. Liar.

"you will find out they some how worship Idologies that been put by some leading Men...another thing you will find that those Idolized deceased Men are kept mummified for Worshipers to visit them" – what the fuck are you talking about? Atheists keep mummified corpses to worship? Are you fucking kidding me? That's hilarious! You are lying again, trying to pretend that atheists are like Communists or Christians in keeping corpses to worship. Liar.

You are either a compulsive liar or totally crazy. Probably both. Your problem isn't atheists – it's you.

Pat Robertson was somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. He remembered saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around them and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?"

Then it was quiet again. Fred Phelps had taken his shirt off and was pouring beer on his chest, to facilitate the tanning process. "What the hell are you yelling about?" he muttered, staring up at the sun with his eyes closed and covered with wraparound Spanish sunglasses. "Never mind," Pat said. "It's your turn to drive." He hit the brakes and aimed the Great Red Shark toward the shoulder of the highway. No point mentioning those bats, I thought. The poor bastard will see them soon enough.

Oh be fair. He could be either a liar or just stupid. Or possibly both, but not necessarily a liar since intent is hard to prove here. Let's settle on at least this: Muneef is stupid.

In the article, Silverman said "They've (the Jews) been the victims of religious bigotry and now they're the purveyors."
Purveying against another religion? But atheists have been hyper-insistant that atheism is not a religion. How can the landlord show religious bigotry against a non-religion?

    March 8, 2012 at 4:24 pm |

So try to define atheism as a religion then. I'm sure your kind has tried and failed. Try again.

You are only about the twenty-fourth person to try that lame approach . . . or it is the twenty-fourth time you did the same schtick.

If your reading comprehension skills were better, you would easily understand that the bigotry was based on the purveyor's religious beliefs. There is nothing there stating that atheism is a religion, and the concept is really stupid when you consider that the relevant definition for "religion" is "the service and worship of God or the supernatural."

I'm a Catholic living in the Bible belt. I have never seen a billboard that said "Catholics are going to hell." Never seen a billboard that says "Gays are an abomination". Never seen a sign that even acknowledged atheism. I've never seen a sign denouncing evolution. I have seen billboards inviting – only inviting – people to attend a certain church. I've seen pro-life billboards, but never an attack on pro-choice people. I did once see a sign asking "Are you going to heaven or to hell?"

Now, we have the atheists putting up billboards directly and agressively ridiculing people of faith. The gub'ment removes religious objects from public property because they violate separation of church and state. Atheist billboards are taken down because they are tasteless and hypocritical.

Actully the words on the billboards seem more like attacking religions calling it a myth and not at all innocent words that call upon existing Atheists but rather calls upon religious to disbelieve in their religions and to become atheists..!!!
The building owner has every right to refuse the billboard since it says things that are against his belief and accepting it would look as if he supported it...

Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!~~~~~

The reason prayer does not work for Christians is that they are worshiping the false god of a corrupt religion. If they opened their hearts and minds, they would embrace the true God, a god of genuine love and tolerance and humanity – Leppo the Clown!

Leppo loves you. Leppo answers the prayers of those who believe in him.

Leppo will use his divine clown car to send unbelievers into the eternal hot tub of fire! There will be much gnashing of elbows and wailing of pimples! Every tooth shall bow! Every buttock shall praise!

Can you afford to risk spending eternity packing into a clown car in the hot-tub of fire? I think not! It obviously makes sense to kowtow before Leppo and give him you undying obedience . . . and money. Leppo needs almost as much money as Jesus.

We ask you guys over and over – and all we get is links to Heartland, Koch Bros., or some other wingnut group Hell, some of you still link to OISM – even though that was debunked a decade ago.

The funny thing is – from looking at posters on various threads, boards, forums, etc. it that there is a discernable pattern. The same folks who claim climate change is a hoax, and refuse to supply evidence, are the same folks who claim gays choose to be gay but refuse to supply evidence, and the same that claim evolution is false, but refuse to supply evidence.

@-Yes – you again keep making these claims, but you have failed to provide the citations to any pper-reviewed scientific research that supports your claims.

      Why?

      March 8, 2012 at 2:58 pm |
    • Yes

You all need scientific proof. I you intelligent to understand what science is ? As i have stated Science is based on Theory not fact. Example Before big bang theory there was another theory. Fact earth has been going through temp changes for 10's of thousands of yrs. That is a fact you keep asking for. Science is based on infinate search for knowledge & info. Is there a final number is it zillion. pillion, fillion. NO. But the radical mmgw scientist you keep ref. to has determined that this is finale. I wii not refer to bad science

The simplest test to establish the truth of these deniers is to sit and watch their world get hotter. They'll whine to their governments soon enough that they'll need money to buy air conditioners or money to pour into their electrical grids when they overheat. It's nicer to let them just stew in their denials.

@Yes. Go do your homework. You have to be able to write in English to get into that fancy community college in Lower Podunk, honey.

      March 8, 2012 at 3:11 pm |
    • Primewonk

@ Yes – I really (really, really) hope that you are in a foreigh country and English is your 3rd or 4th language.

If not, you have absolutely no business trying to comment on science issues.

Everyone in science knows that the earth is always going through warming or cooling cycles – it's like oscillating about a set point. We know the rates of change for various earlier cycles. We have almost a million years worth of data via ice core data. We know what the current rate of change should be. We know what it actually is. The 2 values are very different.

However, you again, have failed to supply the citations to peer-reviewed scientific research that show this is a fraud or a scam.

      I wonder why?

      March 8, 2012 at 3:15 pm |
    • Yes

primwonk, I can understand why you are critical of my intellect. That is always the libs last resort. Put your radical idealogy on the side briefly. You keep referring to these mmgw scientists writings. Unfortunitly because this has become so radical they are not good referances. Science is not supposed to come to finality. These guys have. Don't you understand it has become bad science.

Finally, Now this debate is starting to make sense. At this time there is no good science. Can we agree on that. That is why the science community needs to reset. And have an open minded debate. Get the radical idealogy out of this. As a christian we value the earth as much as anyone. Let's get to bottom of this. One question lets just say that global warming is ending & we are about to go cooling stage. That is much more dangerous

      March 8, 2012 at 3:41 pm |
    • Primewonk

@ Yes – I seem critical of your intellect because, if English is your primary language, you have a huge problem being able to convey ideas. You lack the ability to coherently string words into phrases, phrases in sentences, and sentences into paragraphs.

You make the proto-typical creationist/denier claim that "big bad science" is not fair to the wingnuts, and therefore "big bad science" is wrong/lying/in it for the money.

But for some bizarre reason, it's only the big bad scientists in the fields of science you disagree with who are wrong, lying, or in it for the money.

You said, "At this time there is no good science."
      Bullshit. Start reading here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_opinion_on_climate_change#References

You said, "That is why the science community needs to reset. And have an open minded debate. Get the radical idealogy out of this."
What you describe fits the religious climate change deniers to a Tee. Close to 100% of scientists agree that the observed climate change is man-made. It tends to be those most closely related to the industries that have something to lose, if we were to change our ways, that disagree.

You said, "As a christian we value the earth as much as anyone. Let's get to bottom of this."
Start by honestly evaluating the scientific data out there.

One of the really ironic things about "Yes's" supposed "good" science that climate chane is a fraud, is that some of the key players (Fred Singer for example) used to work for Big Tobacco and were the ones claiming that there were no health hazards associated with second hand smoke.

@Yes, You have already proven yourself to be lacking in credibility on the subject matter. When shown evidence, you've chosen the intellectually lazy and intellectually convenient position of denying the reality. You have outed yourself as a history denier, but you lack the education to support your own position. This position you have taken means you fall into 1 of 3 categories:

      1) You are ignorant.
      2) You are willfully ignorant
      3) You are being intellectually dishonest, either for malice or to ensure the survival of your own incorrect assertions.

For you, I give this page: http://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/
There's a nice color picture for you so you don't have to read. As NASA has put a man on the moon and regularly sends people into space with precision and elegance, before your personal theories are accepted, you must perform some equally astonishing feat to reclaim your credibility.

@ Mark my piddle river–it's the dark stain running down my left leg

I've told you this before after making it obvious in dozens of posts, and it's as true now as then:

Your dishonest and mocking approach to serious issues of discussion causes me to feel immense disgust that we are both of the same species.. Your mind is an incredibly ugly tumor, and I'm sorrowful that you have to experience its fetid byproducts in such intimate eternity.

    March 8, 2012 at 1:30 pm |
    • Mark from Middle River

Nice that you got your name calling under control. I am truly proud of you. 🙂

It is not mocking and for serious discussion, when you have folks drawing lines and acting stupid on both sides sometimes it is better to just step back. Especially here on the Belief Blog. The chances that someone will change their core beliefs here are very slim. Folks that "blog" are normally not the weak minded in society and normally have heard every argument both for and against their views.

So what is your serious discussion really doing? You have Faithful and Atheist in the same place and we can either continue to scream at each other and not move the other a square inch or we can find ways to co-exist in this society.

The former is a waste of resources and preaching to the choir ... the second takes harder work but the yields are much greater.

I didn't call you any names, and you'll notice that I politely ignored your posts on this thread until you replied to me with your normal stupidity that any person who can turn on a computer should be able to see.. You lie and misrepresent what other people say, and then you act proud of your lying as if you just solved the world's hunger problem.. You commit a form of slander when you purposely misrepresent another poster's position that you clearly understand.. If you did that before a judge he'd find you in contempt of court and sit your azz in prison for a month or so

      March 8, 2012 at 1:45 pm |

Momo, if you are going to freak out every time someone attacks your argument then you are going to have a pretty rough time here on the Belief Blog. 🙂

You know, when you said you were a former minister I said it made sence. Total sence, because many in the clergy normally go nuts and have a "my way is the absolute only way" personality. I have seen the same intolerance to other views between clergy in my own church conference. Remember your great "lie" post that I challenged and left you looking empty and lost?

Preacher, time to get knocked off your pulpit, I gotta head to work but ...like I said, some of you on both sides I will drag you kicking and screaming into the middle and into tolerance.

Remember when Hitchens died and the Faithful came out and gave their respectful condolences and for a brief couple of pages on the Blog, we had peace and tolerance... then the extremist on both sides came in and did everything they could to break those of us back up.

I disagree; he's not an idiot, because he shows that he understands the topic by misrepresenting it, focusing on some other irrelevant issue, and finally lying about what has been already established.. He's a detriment to society because he'd rather lie about things that aren't even germane to the argument than deal with any of the substantive issues.. He prefers to lie about what his own actions rather than follow a reasonable argument.. He prefers to misrepresent an argument, rather than show that he understands it and offer a reasonable rebuttal.. He prefers to prove himself a d.o.u.c.h.e. bag rather than offer any sort of cogent response.. He prefers to claim his opponent lost rather than recognize where his argument is unclear.. He's an instigator and a troll, but he lacks the humility to do anything about it..

He's intelligent, but feigns stupidity rather than admit his reasoning isn't 100% perfect.. He's in for some very troubled relationships, and the more he continues on his current track the worse his relationships will be–so I encourage him to stay on his current track; he'll get what he deserves.

So, at 2:17 pm I said I had to go to work and then at 2:50 pm I posted a comment. I am not going to wonder how or where did you get that hour from. I think you are feeling really despirate, which means I know I am on the right path. Try this,:

I got up from my computer.... took a shower and pressed my clothes. I then made my lunch and saw a message on the screen ...and decided to address it.

Goodness, calling me a liar, not a problem, sounds like that is all you guys got is simple name calling. Like I said I know that I am on the right path with you and a few others.

Graytiger, with much respect I will check that out and thanks for listing the page number, that will save me a lot of time.

      >>>"You and 'history student', "

I am a history student. TomTom, you do not have to discuss anything with me but if your discussion is simple name calling then what real discussions were we actually ever having. The commonalities, espeically with this issue are that I can say that the myth signs are in bad taste and I can say that the signs that the other poster put forth of Christian signs are also in bad taste. Now, I gotta admit I love the "you are only picking on Atheist" feelings and statements because they sound just like the Muslim ones that feel they are the only oppressed group in society.

Either way guys, sorry I am still here, work has WiFI and my PDA has always allowed me to post.

Still there's a part of us that expects honesty when dealing with them. At least you know the innocently ignorant people are telling the truth as far as they know it. I think now, were I copying your smarmy tone, I would need to say some ridiculous conclusion like I'm forcing you into the corral, or I'm dragging you back to your own lies, or I've left you lying in your own pretentious filth, or I've smacked you upside your brain with your own equivocation, or something like that.. Momo, in the past I have always been able to post from work and from school. One of the easiest ways to tell is that "Marks from Middle River" is locked into PDA, not Mark. Now the workstation I think might still have Mark. I check here a few times during a shift and in the past have mentioned it. So a liar here, what is the point other than, like said on another thread,'do not take my lack of an instant response make you think I am not there.

Manipulative. ..... Yeah I am a Sith Lord and Momoya is my Jedi son ... Didn't he tell you 🙂

I do not understand how you figure someone should debate that disagrees with you. Am I to just accept your rules and game? Sorry I can't play as such. I will give you respect but what makes it so easy for me is for me to just cut and paste your own words against you. Sorry if that makes you mad and sorry I am not like HeavenSent and just throwing scriptures at you.

All I want is to diminish those at the extremes of both the Faithful and Atheist. Find commonality and unclench the fist.

Mother Teresa said if we can make the Muslim a better Muslim and make the Hindu a better Hindu then it is for the betterment of all.

Maybe I will keep going until I make certain Atheist better Atheist. If you wish to label me a azz it will not be a label that I will wear cause only I can define me. 🙂

Where you can or can't post from has nothing to do with you using a particular excuse.. You gave an excuse for why you wouldn't be posting.. Then you post.. Either you were lying in your excuse, or you were lying in your actions.. Either way, it's # 20 or 25 or 32 example of you lying.. You're a liar.. You're not just a liar who says things you know are false, you're a liar way down inside the lizard part of your brain.. You misrepresent because it's the only tactic you know.. You've simply forgotten how to be honest with yourself or others in any way, so you've managed to laugh about your illness and trick your brain into thinking your vile behavior is a boost to your ego.. You're a tu rd; you know it; and you roll around in your shame by telling yourself it's a virtue.. It's probably a good thing you don't have a clue how disgusting you are to the world.

And there you go again.. If it wasn't an excuse, you would have said so four or five posts ago, instead of defending why it was an excuse, but due to your regimen of pre-work ablutions you managed to post before leaving for work and then once you got to work.. You see, Mark, when a person lies as much as you do, he loses track of which lies are supposed to be covering for other lies that he can claim aren't lies without backtracking into lying about the origin of the original lies that he thought sounded enough like truth to be taken as something less than lies.. You're a lying instigator, and you've had so much practice, that now you can't turn it off.. I feel very sorry for you and your sad existence..

Or was that lie number 78 or 83 or whatever you're up to, today??.

Once again, all you can do is laugh about how you've won the race when everybody knows you not only didn't participate, but you drove your car to all the water stations and mocked the runners for not cheating or using rocket-powered skates before going to the finish line and rubbing your feces all over the trophies and ri.bbons.. Please, by all means, co.ntinue to mock and laugh as you co.ntinue lying and lying and lying.. Maybe you're able to fool some people, but you're not fooling yourself, are you??. Deep down, you know that you're a lying sack of sh t, and deep down, you know that you're powerless to change who you are; and deep down, you can hardly live with who you've become.. Congrats!!. And keep up the good work.. I'll be looking forward to your next post that co.nfirms the how des.p.icable you've become.

It's not that Mark chose to switch the subject, it's that he can't he can't help himself.. He's a contention junkie with his brain locked into that addiction.

    • Mark from Middle River

I would consider only the first one to be a step above bad taste but the other two I see them as the same.

Also, how am I changing the subject. All I did was take your example, remind you that other Atheist also see them in bad taste and throw it back at you. That is not changing the subject, that is finding enough middle ground between some Atheist and some Faithful to take the wind out of your sails.

      March 8, 2012 at 2:09 pm |
    • The Love of Christians

Yoou changed the subject be not responding to the offensive nature of the examples I provided, but instead tried to equate them, which you are still doing. They are not even remotely equal.

Is "you know it is a myth" equal to calling atheists gun-brandishing psychokillers? Is it equal to calling atheists traitors who are taking America to civil war? Is it equal to saying atheists hate America? Not even close!

You have not even remotely tried to move to a middle ground – your words are hypocrisy.

I have shown clearly the bigoted lies that we atheists are publicly subjected to. If you good Christians are going to lie and falsely accuse us like that as you weasel your way into political power, you would be fools not to expect some firm blowback. Though we have not even come close to the atrocities that Christians have committed in the name of their loving god.

I watched: “The Real God: An Epiphany” this is so much so much self-defense psychological garbage for being an atheist that I have ever read. It is not even a good subliminal attack on the belief in God. I see it more as an atheist trying to convince him/herself that there is no god.

      3. How much self defense psychological garbage for being an atheist material you have read so that I get an idea for the weight behind your statement that "that [so much]I have ever read?"
      4. How the piece qualifies as a "subliminal attack on the belief of god?"
      5. How you measure whether it is "good" or "bad" subliminal attack on the belief in God?

Tom thanks for correcting my spelling & also thanks for making my point. Science is an infinate search for knowledge & info based on math. Is there a final number is it zillion, pillion, fillion. NO. But the problem with these scientist radical dec. is that they have made it final. That is not what science is about. That is dangerous for all of us. We need scientist that are on a never ending search. That's why this is their religion

    March 8, 2012 at 12:52 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

What scientists have "made it final"? Name them. Cite your proof that said scientists have stopped looking for more answers.

      March 8, 2012 at 12:57 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

I notice you keep calling them "scientist". Is there only one, or do you really not know how to indicate more than one?

      March 8, 2012 at 12:58 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

What is meant by "radical dec."?

      March 8, 2012 at 1:00 pm |
    • Joe T.

"made it final"? The Big Bang Theory hasn't been "made final". Scientists came up with a hypothesis, found evidence to suggest that it was highly possible that this hypothesis could be true. It then became a theory. They are working every day, gathering evidence to support the claim. If they had "made it final", they would stop searching and stop trying to find evidence.

Oh wait, that's what religion does. It makes a claim and that's good enough. No evidence needed to back it up. All of your qualms with science are qualms that don't apply to science. They are qualms that apply to religion.

Did you read JoeT's excellent post explaining how you're misrepresenting science, and instead you're complaining about the mechanism of religion?. Read it a few more times.. Nobody's "attacking" you, you just perceive it that way because your error has been so adeptly pointed out..

      March 8, 2012 at 1:09 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Who's 'attacking' you? I asked you a question, several in fact, and you haven't answered any of them. I asked you to cite proof that Al Gore made the statement you said he did, I asked you what scientists you are talking about, among other queries.

If you are going to make statements of fact, you should welcome the chance to prove that they ARE facts.

      March 8, 2012 at 1:12 pm |
    • Yes

I agree with Joe. Science has not made the big bang theory final. That's responsible science. They have not been that responsible in the MAN MADE global warming farce. As far as my Faith. I struggle with it at times. But my search for a better faith never ends. Kinda how responsible science is supposed to act

      March 8, 2012 at 1:13 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Where do you get the idea that 'global warming' is 'final'? There are scientists who debate climate change and its causes all the time. There is no firm conclusion, only a great deal of evidence that our climate is changing in part because of our impact upon it.

The only one here who's being dogmatic is you.

      March 8, 2012 at 1:16 pm |
    • Mark from Middle River

      >>>"They are working every day, gathering evidence to support the claim. "

The wonders of science is that while someone or insti'tution is constantly working on the claim it is mostly held as fact within their halls. The same time another University is asking for funding to debunk the the first claim, so that theirs can be seen as more of a pending fact.

The question is why, if science find its acceptable practice for another party to debunk another party, why then when it comes to Faith and Religion those same do not move to debunk with science? Basically, if you feel that science is the ultimate truth, then why the lack of scientific proof that there is not a God or Gods?

      March 8, 2012 at 1:19 pm |

    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

You've been told this repeatedly. You cannot prove that Santa Claus doesn't exist. The onus of proof is on the part of the person making the claim that something exists or that something is true.

      March 8, 2012 at 1:25 pm |
    • Brad

      Mark-

Anyone is free to "debunk" science if they can use credible evidence to do so – that is, if the evidence holds up to examination by the same standards as is applied to evidence that supports scientific claims.

    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

@Yes: you seem to be confusing faith with fact, and scientific proof or theory with belief. It isn't faith that causes me to think that global warming is occurring, it's seeing that the research shows that it appears to be, and that it's likely the impact of pollution is a partial cause.

I see no reason to believe in a God when there is not sufficient evidence that one exists.

      March 8, 2012 at 1:40 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

Tom , My religion has been debated for over 2000 yrs. What does faith mean ? How does is it affect individuals ? etc. The connection is that faith based people are open to science not vise versa. This global warming thing has never been firly debated. It got political. That is why it has become a RADICAL religion to it's believers. Me personally would like to see the debate reset and start over. The problem is the scientistS have cornered themselves. No way out

    March 8, 2012 at 12:50 pm |

From what I understand he had to have signed a contract that detailed what would be on the billboard.. Either he didn't read before signing, or he changed his mind sometime later after reading.. My guess would be that he was fine with it until the story went "viral" on CNN and other news outlets. Believers are natural hypocrites.

Well, the only thing I can figure is he definitely didn't know what the billboard was going to depict, either because he didn't read it, or he was misinformed. I'm wondering if he found some loophole in the contract that enabled him to get out of it. Otherwise, Mr. Silverman would have a case against him.

      @ Yes

You don't seem to know what "worship" is, Yes..

"Global warming" is one part of a cycle where the earth warms and cools and warms and cools.. That humanity has polluted the earth's air, water, and soil is complete fact, and yes, some of those pollutants cause the earth's temperature to rise, the ocean's acidity to increase, and the soil's vital nutrients to decrease.. Just because each god believer believes how he wants to and justifies it with interpretations of scripture that have no valid method of verification does not mean that science works that way.. There's a difference.

First, please provide a citation, I don't think Al Gore said that.
Second, why would you listen to Al Gore, anyway, he's not a scientist.

      March 8, 2012 at 12:16 pm |
    • Yes

Fact, Earth has been warming & cooling for 10"s of thosands of yrs. Fact science has it's place but science is not based on fact it is based on Theroy WHICH is always changing. Example a few yrs. ago science came up with the big bang theroy before that there was a differant theroy. If you belive in the almighty God our life is in his hands not a bunch of politically driven scientists

      March 8, 2012 at 12:22 pm |
    • Tom, Tom, the Piper's Son

      I don't think "theroy" is a word.

And I don't think you understand the scientific definition of the word THEORY, either.

Of course science changes! That is the nature of scientific research, to continue to understand the processes of nature.

I learned that in high school.

"Fact science has it's place but science is not based on fact it is based on Theroy WHICH is always changing."

I'm confused, why do you think that presenting "facts" would do any good, shouldn't you be arguing from a "faith" position?

      March 8, 2012 at 12:47 pm |
    • momoya

      @ Yes

Science describes what appears to be fact; as new data comes in, the theories are amended or tossed aside in favor of a theory that better explains the facts.. Global temperature shifts are fact; the human contribution to global warming is fact; human contribution to the change in sea and air and soil is fact.

Yes, you are correct that if you believe in a particular god myth over any facts or fact-pictures (theories) science just isn't much use to you.. Perhaps you should be a palm reader?

      March 8, 2012 at 12:54 pm |
    • Joe T.

      @Yes
You should look up the definition of the scientific method and see what it says about theory. Just because something is called a theory doesn't mean it isn't credible.

Funny that you would discredit science because "it's not based on fact". So why are you religious then? Religion has no basis in fact.
