Loudly Catholic Santorum loses Ohio Catholics

By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor

(CNN) - Rick Santorum, a conservative Catholic who is outspoken about faith-based issues, lost Catholic voters by a wide margin in Ohio on Tuesday, potentially a key factor that allowed Mitt Romney to squeak out the narrowest of victories overall in the state.

According to CNN’s exit polls, Romney took 43% of Ohio Catholics on Super Tuesday, compared to 31% for Rick Santorum, and Romney beat Santorum overall by 38% to 37%.

Catholic voters accounted for a third of Ohio’s Republican electorate, the largest share of Catholics in any Super Tuesday state.

“The margin of Romney's win among Ohio Catholics is surprising, given Santorum's traditional Catholicism,” says John Green, a political science professor at the University of Ohio. “Romney's margin among Ohio Catholics - especially in the three largest metropolitan areas - may account for his close win in Ohio.”

Green notes that Romney, a Mormon, has consistently won the Catholic vote in this year’s Republican primaries. That pattern runs counter to speculation that Catholics would focus more on hot-button issues at a time when Catholic bishops are battling the Obama White House over government-mandated contraception coverage.

Get the latest news on Santorum's campaign

Romney has denounced the Obama administration’s contraception rule but Santorum has gone further, making social issues a cornerstone of his campaign. Last week, the former Pennsylvania senator said that John F. Kennedy’s 1960 speech in which the then-presidential candidate advocated an absolute separation of church and state nearly made him throw up.

The Catholic vote is one of the largest swing blocs in the country, voting for the winning presidential candidates from both parties in recent elections. But the bloc is so diverse, including many Catholics who differ with church leaders on social issues and many who have drifted from the church, that many religious and political experts dismiss any notion of a “Catholic vote.”

In Ohio, the most contested of the 10 states to cast ballots on Tuesday, Catholics represented one of GOP primary’s main constituencies. Another major bloc, white evangelicals, comprised almost half of the Ohio vote, and broke for Santorum over Romney by 47% to 30%.

One progressive Catholic group made political hay out of Santorum’s weak showing among Ohio Catholics, emailing reporters a statement titled “Santorum campaigns on divisive wedge issues, promptly loses Catholic vote.”

Five things we learned from Super Tuesday

“Catholic voters care more about economic issues that affect their families than they do about socially divisive wedge issues like contraception,” said James Salt, executive director of Catholics United, in the statement.

“Mainstream Catholics want leaders who can address the moral challenges of our day like income inequality, underwater mortgages and poverty,” Salt continued, “not leaders who perpetuate a never-ending culture war that divides our community.”

I think most Catholics recognize that Santorum isn't even Christian.

MOST Catholics are neither sheep nor "born-again" Catholics. They can tell a hack from a handsaw.

Most Catholics in Ohio are anything but Catholics. They are Novus Ordo lunitics who praise man and take communion in their filty hands.

It's sad when a candidate is so pro-Vatican theology and extreme that other Catholics vote for a Mormon instead.

  7. Reality

Catholicism is all about the Three B Syndrome i.e. Bred, Born, and Brainwashed in orthodox mumbo jumbo i.e bloody wine, hairy bread, "pretty/ugly wingie, talking/singing, flying, fictional thingies, limbo, ascensions, assumptions, immaculate conceptions, virgin impregnations by theoretical ghostly gods, guilt trips of atonement/mythical sinning-original parents, food/wine replicators, raising bodies only to die again, imminent second comings that never come, imaginary wise men, slaughtering innocent children and filicide.

  8. For Women

Women's rights, reproductive health, contraception & abortion are more than big news. We are not talking subtle abuse of power over women's bodies:
Women understand that given the chance, Governor Ultra McDonnell (R-VA) would enforce 'transvaginal ultrasounds" on them AND without their doctors' permission.

Such extreme GOP agendas are so retrograde for women, that New York Republican lawmaker Teresa Sayward (R) says she does not support any of the GOP Presidential candidates.
Ms. Sayward says if she had to vote today:
"I'd vote for Obama. Absolutely...Because I really, truly think that the candidates that are out there today for the Republican side would take women back decades."
"It's disheartening for me to see our party move away from what it was always about and that is to stay out of people's lives, let them live their lives, don't impose their religion on anybody else. Don't impose their feelings, let them live, and uphold the Constitution."

**The Futuristic Nightmare for American Families**
GOP's demonstrated narrow, narrow vision on behalf of the affluent and transnationals:
Cutting women's health, reproductive & family planning rights; getting rid of safety nets; cutting state budgets on the backs of women, new mothers, Headstart, low-income, the middle class and seniors and shifting those monies to corporations; getting rid of the minimum wage, worker protections, child labor laws; getting rid of voting rights; Anti-education at all levels (e.g. cutting teachers: GOP Governors already cut 700.000 public sector jobs - over 200,000 teachers), anti-R&D investments, anti-job-creation (voting against the American Jobs Act, GOP governors refusing highspeed rail monies and FEMA), anti-worker rights, anti-health reform, anti–financial reform, anti-taxes for the wealthy, anti-infrastructure for the 21st century = anti-'nation building' at home.

  9. Prayer is not healthy for children and other living things

Prayer takes people away from actually working on real solutions to their problems.
Prayer has been shown to have no discernible effect towards what was prayed for.
Prayer prevents you from getting badly needed exercise.
    Prayer makes you fat.
Prayer wears out your clothes prematurely.
Prayer contributes to global warming through excess CO2 emissions.
Prayer fucks up your knees and your neck and your back.
Prayer can cause heart attacks, especially among the elderly.
Prayer reveals how stupid you are to the world.
Prayer exposes your backside to pervert priests.
Prayer makes you think doilies are exciting.
Prayer makes you secretively flatulent and embarrassed about it.
Prayer makes your kids avoid spending time with you.
    Prayer gives you knobbly knees.
Prayer makes you frothy like Rick Santorum. Just google him to find out.
    Prayer dulls your senses.
Prayer makes you post really stupid shit.
    Prayer makes you hoard cats.
Prayer makes you smell like shitty kitty litter and leads you on to harder drugs.
    Prayer wastes time.

Rick is not a Catholics whith whom I agree. I believe what I read in the bible and unlike catholic politicians I have not removed any of the pages. Too many in politics preach the teachings of some of the bibles teachings an dthen chose to ignore others. Rock is one of those individuals. Keep religion out of politics. It's a choice, one I proudly make.

This is really hilarious. If anyone really did the math, and looked at this from a conservative vs. moderate votes perspective, they would clearly see that the combined conservative votes for Santorum and Gingrich WAY out weigh the votes for moderate Romney. If Newt was not in the race, Santorum would have swept the boards.

And yes – Rick Santorum does speak for a very large group of Catholics. Those who are actually true Catholics, practice their faith 100%, and are not afraid to stand up for it.

Yep, Newt is the Republican Party's Ralph Nader. Hope he decide's to run on a third party ticket. (Naw, all l he really wants is to be vice president so he can harangue us all on the 6 o'clock news and on the Sunday morning shows a la Agnew and Cheney.)

And, you're wrong. Like I said before: Most Catholics are neither sheep nor "born again." They're not Opus Dei extremists, either. MOST Catholics can tell a hack from a handsaw.

As a Catholic I know our folks won't go to Romney as your graphic suggests. We believe in God. Romney is a Mormon, so it is anybody's guess what he believes in. They are crazier than Scientologists.

Even Catholics can't stand Santorum. It doesn't matter, even if he got the nomination, which he won't, he would never win a general election and anyone that puts him on their ticket would be killing their chances as well. His chances at a cabinet position are about the same.

  16. REALLY ?!?

Little Ricky lost the catholic vote for several reasons. He does not represent the catholic mainstream in America, in fact when you take into account everything he says he has a hard time even qualifying as a Christian. What he preaches is certainly not the teachings of Jesus. Not only is he not mainstream, he's on the outer fringe of the fringe. tell me, how many people would take their dead baby home overnight to play with him? That's exactly what little Ricky did. The other obvious problem is that he's a hypocrite. He outright complained about the President trying to inspire kids to go to college while he has three college degrees, his wife has a college degree and yes HIS kids are going to college, why is that Ricky? He is also a first class chicken hawk, he wants to go to war (again not Christian) yet he did not serve nor has His kids decided to serve in uniform, but he more than willing to send Your kids into harms way. Then there are All of the outright lies he tells, far, far too many list here. Bottom line is little Ricky does not represent mainstream Catholics or mainstream America.

There is being a Catholic or Christian and then there is radical Catholicism. That is forcing other to live by your beliefs. This is a philosophy that Santorum has consistently pursued throughout his career. This clearly show that as Americans no matter your faith we still hold true to the believe that freedom of religion means not forcing your believes on others.
