Your Take: Comments on New York city schools banning ‘loaded words’ from tests

By Dan Merica, CNN

Washington (CNN) – Anger boiled over in many of the comments on our recent post about the New York City Department of Education aiming to ban “loaded words,” including “dinosaur” and “birthdays” from standardized school tests, many of them apparently over religious sensitivities:

sarah
Oh-crying-out-loud!!! Stop worrying so much about offending people and get back to teaching!!! This is why every other nation is outranking us in education!!!

snowunbelievable.. lets add new words to the list… starting with "education" and "future"... geez!

Others raised questions about whether eliminating these words on tests would just mean these words would offend people more in their day-to-day lives:

angelis
If the kids won't encounter these words in school (where they are supposed to get basic learning/guidance on society & culture), I wonder how it'll be like for them someday if they hear/read these "banned" words elsewhere?

CalBob
The Stanford prof is right. Education is not supposed to be "warm and fuzzy." It should make us uncomfortable and make us think. Dinosaurs making fundamentalists uncomfortable? Give me a break. Teaching that there were no dinosaurs isn't education, it's ignorance.

Many extrapolated from the story to decry what they said was a larger problem with political correctness and censorship:

patriarchae
On the topic of censorship as a whole, it is an outrageous irony. They censor words because a few in our diverse melting pot of culture may get "offended," but sheltering them from these "offensive" things only serves to further divides between us. So what if Jehovah's Witnesses may get "offended" by the word "birthdays?” They live in a country where the majority of people celebrate birthdays so they HAVE to learn how to deal with it and grow some skin. They have no choice.

Scott
This is one of the most upsetting things I've read in the news today. Schools, teachers, and parents need to stop coddling kids. They are the reason our lower education system is so lacking. Specifically, we need to raise the standards and stop sheltering our children from scary things like the unknown, new ideas, and personal failure. Otherwise, they will be unprepared for the REAL world, and our country will fall further behind than it already has!

Though few and far between, some people did support the measure, with caveats:

Dick Tilton
After writing a serious rant about all this, I reconsidered: This is – hopefully – about improving effectiveness in standardized testing, NOT about limiting pepperoni from school curricula. The goal of standardized testing is to effectively measure performance and/or knowledge. In order to do so effectively, the tests must work accurately and fairly for the population to be tested. This means removing cultural, social and religious references wherever possible. In the classroom, however, this kind of political correctness would be a disaster. All parents need to be vigilant to make sure our kids are shown the world the way it really is, and educated to come to their own conclusions about what's offensive.

And then there was this commenter:

GAW
In the words of that great philosopher Charlie Brown "Good Grief."

Now, now...quiet down. Prayer is a believers way of showing they are concerned, just like you aetheists send get well cards. Prayer may not mean much to an aetheist who only concerns themselves with what they feel and see, but there may be more to life than any of us know and infact when I know the whole earth is nothing compared to the immense size of the universe. Stop jerking around and pretending you dudes have all the answers...cause you don't.

Hmmm, Jesus you say. Let us take a closer look:

      ONLY FOR THE NEWCOMERS:

JC's family and friends had it right 2000 years ago ( Mark 3: 21 "And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.")

Said passage is one of the few judged to be authentic by most contemporary NT scholars. e.g. See Professor Ludemann's conclusion in his book, Jesus After 2000 Years, p. 24 and p. 694.

Actually, Jesus was a bit "touched". After all he thought he spoke to Satan, thought he changed water into wine, thought he raised Lazarus from the dead etc. In today's world, said Jesus would be declared legally insane.

Or did P, M, M, L and J simply make him into a first century magic-man via their epistles and gospels of semi-fiction? Many contemporary NT experts after thorough analyses of all the scriptures go with the latter magic-man conclusion with John's gospel being mostly fiction.

Obviously, today's followers of Paul et al's "magic-man" are also a bit on the odd side believing in all the Christian mumbo jumbo about bodies resurrecting, and exorcisms, and miracles, and "magic-man atonement, and infallible, old, European/Utah white men, and 24/7 body/blood sacrifices followed by consumption of said sacrifices. Yummy!!!!

So why do we really care what a first century CE, illiterate, long-dead, preacher/magic man would do or say?

THEN the rest of the story unfolded and the blogger Reality wished to count himself amongst the unbelieving not knowing that the Jews who killed this Christ couldn't kill enough witnesses to stop the story, nor could they make good the lies they tried to espouse about how the grave was empty and they wanted to badly for it to be otherwise...and then Reality laid down and died one day not knowing that God had given him every chance to see there was more to it all...

No God = Truth = Reality just dies
God Lives = Truth = Reality just lost the gambit and lost the rest of eternity in the mix...oh well, just didn't care to hear that there may be another reason for your miserable life? Well, I guess stubborness is a religion unto itself sometimes.

No it doesn't you are so full of crap and lies. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs.!

Where are the Christian voices condemning the racist vitriol being puked out in the name of Christianity by Godspeople and Urafkntool below? I would think that Christians would be shouting them down and dissociating themselves, but there is nothing but silence. It appears that only ones with the moral integrity to raise their voices against these neo-Nazi scu.mbags are the atheists.

A prayer that does change things:

      ONLY FOR THE NEWCOMERS:

From The Apostles' Creed 2011: (updated by yours truly and based on the studies of historians and theologians of the past 200 years)

Should I believe in a god whose existence cannot be proven
and said god if he/she/it exists resides in an unproven,
human-created, spirit state of bliss called heaven??

I believe there was a 1st century CE, Jewish, simple,
preacher-man who was conceived by a Jewish carpenter
named Joseph living in Nazareth and born of a young Jewish
girl named Mary. (Some say he was a mamzer.)

Jesus was summarily crucified for being a temple rabble-rouser by
the Roman troops in Jerusalem serving under Pontius Pilate,

He was buried in an unmarked grave and still lies
a-mouldering in the ground somewhere outside of
      Jerusalem.

Said Jesus' story was embellished and "mythicized" by
many semi-fiction writers. A descent into Hell, a bodily resurrection
and ascension stories were promulgated to compete with the
Caesar myths. Said stories were so popular that they
grew into a religion known today as Catholicism/Christianity
and featuring dark-age, daily wine to blood and bread to body rituals
called the eucharistic sacrifice of the non-atoning Jesus.

      Amen

Yes oh God we are your husbandries and we abour together with you only thru subverionism's accolades. God, we truly are your buildings as scriptures do impart. I am not so worried about words. I remember the day young Brad, my neighbor, was baptized into the church. His mother was so proud and had such high hopes. He was on his way to becoming a fine young man. Then a couple of years later he and his friends took a chemistry class from Mr. U, a proud, charming, and very enthusiastic and vocal atheist in high school. Pretty soon they all stopped coming to church and started saying they were atheists. After a while the parents began to figure out what was happening and began to complain, but it took several years and dozens upon dozens of,wrecked young lives before he was got rid of. Brad has lived with several girls that he was not married to, has attempted suicide, can't hold down a job, and is a constant source of misery to his mother, who really needs his help. My daughter in law transfered out of his class and my son was smarter than the other kids and ignored him, both becoming successful young parents with a fine future.

I don't know we have to put up with these predators in our schools!

What a total lie, Abinadi! If that neighbor even exists, which I thoroughly doubt, and if you have reported it somewhat accurately, which I thoroughly doubt, then he is like hundreds of thousands of religious kids who do the exact same thing. Attempting to say that his behavior was because of a chemistry teacher . . . total bullshit.

And you were part of a religious mob that had a teacher removed because of his religious beliefs? That is immoral, unAmerican and unConstitutional. And not particularly believable.

Whole lotta perversions of the truth there.

Religious people sure lie a lot. I thought you Mormons prided yourselves on being honest.

I had a similar experience in middle school with a teacher in a gifted-and-talented enrichment program. At the time I was way ahead of him as a non-theist, old fashioned agnostic that he was. But he definitely wanted to bring the class around to his way of thinking. I think the morality of the kids coming out of the program matched that of the other kids fairly well. I will say in our favor that none of us died within the next decade.

Maybe so, Abinadi.. However, I know for a fact that many christian teachers feel that it is their job to 'be a light' to their students and inspire them to accept christianity or to be a better christian.. Being human, some such teachers struggled with human-like faults such as depression, egotism, holding down a job, and etc..

God has given the keys to His Kingdomly Domains, over to His 1st-born Son who was there when God said, "Let there be Light!" Only the spoken word was around for eons upon eons of billions of years, therefore the History trails regarding God's passing moments are lost ages. God may well be what our world's written histories have ladled thru our writings of recorded timeliness. I believe in a God and Godliness and even the Godly. One cannot simply erase God and Godly Histories by simply arguing against God and His History-Trails of the written wordisms. Likewise civilization's wanting to disavow the use of words as being "loaded" are but primative undulations of bigotrous angularisms.

      OF REFLECTIONS' ABYSS
      By Pipe-Dreamer

The mirrored reflections of socialisms will ever hide many individual's oneness. "I am alone" when one looks passed socialisms' reflectives. You will never truly be united with me nor myself. I am myself and nothng more. You are the mirrored reflectiveness that keeps me wanting to learn. I am fearful oh God of my unleavened spirit. You oh God know my innermost thoughts and you oh God do see myself's pain to know you oh God. Without my always trying to know you oh God, I would be without much reason to want living and to be alive. You oh God are my Life's nourishing moments in Time.

Shadows play in the lime of lights' refractioning. The motions of light do mix with the movements of self. Never able to see into the depths of darkness will ever be. Only the mirrored momentums of self may be one's shadowy fields of reflective monumentalisms. Oh God of my everness soul, You are my fields of Glory and personal redemption. Without individualisms being manifestations' consort, Life could not exist let alone become aware of its' Self. Oh God who is Creator of Creation and creations made manifested, you are Time's momentum and Life's essence. People are but refractions of reflectiveness oh God and your Godliness does outshine all celestial Life and its' many formations. God you are and will forever be!

Deeply within the microcosm of inner space our reflectiveness ever does shine thru. Our being within the realm of outer space does ever mirror the deepest parts of inner space. We are your buildings oh God and all Life here is of your Kingdom's Domains. The Abyss reaches ever outward and inwardly. Time does the traveler their sentenced waywardness. Oh God, I do so see your Timeliness and timelessness. My soul does treasure your moments' finiteness with my thoughts. In your Abyss I will die and become of your Holiness Spirit.

It's not proven its just ~More lies. No it doesn't.

Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!

You forgot to mention that God eventually did answer the prayers of all those faithful people from a century ago. He inspired men and women to discover and invent the many fine drugs and medical proceedures that save lives today. The faith healers are as bad as the atheists in denying that those discoveries were answers to prayers!

We have already been shown the results of prayer or do you not pay attention to the news? Children die every day when medical attention is not sought and the care givers turn to prayer instead.

@william: never been to prison. Was in jail one night for a bad check when I was 20, though.

      White: Check.
Underemployed: Thanks to Affirmative Action, Check. I have a crap job making 9.00 an hour which doesn't even pay my bills, and is the first job I've had in the last 2 years. Not for lack of trying, however, but because I'm white.

Troubled family life: Nope. I was actually raised by two very liberal and loving parents. I just don't agree after doing tons and tons of research.

Troubled Marriage: nope. Actually we're quite happy together.

Lapsed Christian: I lapsed once in my life and ended up pagan. I turned from that to Atheism, then to Christianity a few years later.

Germanic Background: Sort of. Half Italian, Quarter German, Quarter English, completely literate, and able to see what's wrong and what's going on, even though certain people don't WANT to believe it.

Angry about a job: Who isn't mad at their job on occasion? Mainly I get angry about undertrained representatives who make MY job harder.

Broken family: Nope. Mom and dad were happily married over 30 years until my dad died from cancer.

Genocide IS a serious thing. My race (and presumably yours) is BEING genocided. Don't believe me? They tried to turn Zimmerman into a white man just to perpetuate hate against whites. CNN, Faux News, ABC, NBC, CBS.. all are owned by ZOG and have one agenda: The complete and utter destruction of the one race on earth who can stop their Israeli supremecy BS. Nobody else can.

Let the government watch me. I don't care. I have nothing to hide. I don't do stupid crap like plan bombings or anything else. Nobody on Stormfront is. We're not the ones inciting violence at all. That's Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

@Gokubi: Zionists always attempt to hide and protect Zionism. It's well known that the mainstream media and the banks are all ran by Zionists. So either you're a zionist or an idiot who has no idea what he's talking about. Take your pick, because those are the only options you get.

I do my research. I research every day, new atrocities being visited on my people by the Zionists pet apes, and while I'm absolutely not going to preach violence, I will preach seperatism. As a supposed Jew, you should value seperatism, since your own religion teaches it.

Gokubi: While you may be Jewish, that doesn't mean you know EVERYTHING that's going on, especially from Israel. I always do my research. I don't know much about your beliefs but I do know that in America, whites are targeted by the media constantly. I believe the ZOG issue because I've researched the owners of the media companies, all of which claim to be Jewish, which is where zionists hide. My wife is Jewish. She and I believe the same about ZOG.

Wife a jew? If it's a jew for jesus then that doesn't count. If she is a legit practicing jew then her believing in ZOG is doubly ridiculous because she should know better. Next, lets look at the top media stories of today. Obama's health care bill, shooting in Oakland, The revolt in Syria, and March Madness.... can you please show me how in anyway that targets white people at all? Take off your blinders and realize that the world, let alone zionist jews, are not out to get you, I promise.

      April 2, 2012 at 6:55 pm |
    • GodsPeople

@Gokubi: Actually, it does count. Considering the Jews were supposed to accept Christ as your savior just like we do, and you are in complete disobedience to God by not doing so, I'd say it heavily counts. We're practicing Orthodox Christians, which is akin to Messianic Judaeism.

I can easily show you an article. Check out this Trayvon Martin garbage. I've been following it closely on almost every news outlet, and they've been trying to convince the black community that Zimmerman is white the entire time. He's not. He's a Mexican/Jewish hybrid. Zimmerman is a common Jewish last name, as you should know. You all want to consider yourself your own race, well, I'm fine with that, too. Thankfully, my wife also has quite a bit of German and Scots-Irish in her bloodstream, too, so she's definitely white. There's also that kid in mississippi state that ran over a black guy. Yep, he did it, he admitted it, and he's gonna do jail time for it, and he should. However, did you read anything about the execution style murder of a white student at mississippi state by 3 black men? Or the breakin of a house by 2 black men and murder of an entire white family? how about the Detroit couple who was burned to death by black men? I'll bet THOSE never made CNN. All of these were ONLY reported by a small, local news agency (usually a paper), but no calls for outrage, no hate crime charges.. nothing. There's the white kid who was set on fire in Kansas City, and the blacks who did it SAID it was because "it's what he deserved because he's white." These are just a few incidents.. there are many thousands every week. I find many, other members of Stormfront find others. They actually DID happen, and the blacks mainly get away with it with slaps on the wrist.

Don't tell me my race isn't targeted for genocide. I know it is, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt it's the Zionists (note I seperate them from real Jews, since Orthodox Jews don't like Zionists either) behind it.

      April 2, 2012 at 7:34 pm |
    • Gokubi

      @Gods

Nope, sorry kid but just because you believe in Jesus does not make it true so considering jews are still around the temple isn't rebuilt and we haven't been delivered yet, it's pretty safe to say that jesus was full of sh.it, If you accept jesus as your savior you've moved away from judaism and you've become a christian, idiots who want to try and maintain they are both jews and believe in jesus are probably just the saddest people I've ever met.

As for Trayvon martin, I have yet to read any article that "tries" to make Zimmerman anything other than what he is, which is a latino man that is most likely pretty racist. He might have a name that sounds jewish and who knows, he might be jewish but my guess is that he's straight up latino. If you really think that the media is trying to "make him white" then you got those blinders on again and clearly have trouble reading.....

Also consider I am of German, Polish origin, are they not white? Or is it because I'm jewish that all of a sudden changed my dna?

Lasltly, the crimes you say are committed and aren't picked up..... I'm sorry to tell you but crimes of this nature happen pretty much everywhere all the time, why the heck would a national news outlet pick up a local story, as gruesome as it may sound? Treyvon martin is different because it was an unarmed kid killed because he was wearing a hoodie and people like you continue to use the stereotype that black kids like him are dangerous because he looked like a hoodlum. And another thing, the crimes you listed, those people have been incarcerated and are facing punishment, what more do you want? Oh yeah, I forgot, you want Hitler to be reincarnated to come back, take out the jews and all other minorities so things could go back to the leave it to beaver days (which I might add, never actually existed).

Also, you and white people are most certainly not targeted for genocide, do you even understand the word? The only way white people are going to really start shrinking in number is through interracial marriage... which let me guess, you believe to be ungodly because a good god would put people on this earth to fall in love with one another but to also make sure they are two different races so it would be an abomination......

You're a pretty sad excuse for a human being but it's ok, since all you can do it bi..tch and moan about the world screwing you over and one day when life hands you an as.swhooping you'll have no one to blame but yourself, or god.....

    • GodsPeople

@gokubi: You're a fairly pathetic individual since you apparently have to resort to ad hominem attacks because you can't actually legitimately prove anything I say wrong. Meanwhile, I have access to all SORTS of provable evidence of the zionists and their plot.

The Temple will be rebuilt in the New Jerusalem when the Messiah RETURNS. Try actually reading Jesus' teachings, since he was one of YOUR people. I guess the people Jesus healed were idiots too, right? Or the Canaanite woman who's daughter He healed, thus extending God's grace to us Gentiles for her humility. Even Jesus Himself said that the Jews would start to turn to Him as the Messiah when the End of Days is approaching. The End of Days aren't here yet. They may not be here for another few hundred, thousand, or even billion years. God only knows, and He will come as a thief in the night, and no man will know when He has returned to rule among His people until He is ready for us to know.

You say you are German/Polish. That's fine. Now which of your parents was Jewish? Was it both? Jewish DNA is known to be different from Caucasoid DNA, which is why they can actually do a blood test to look for Jewish roots, which is how my wife found out about her Jewish ancestry. If one parent was Jewish and one not, then I'd see you as half Jewish, half White. The Jews would see you as a Jew period, because they don't seem to differentiate between full, half, quarter, eighth, etc.

Go read the original articles right here on CNN about the Trayvon Martin case. The first 4 or 5 all mention Zimmerman as a white, then the flip it to white hispanic, all in an effort to make him white, so the blacks will attack more whites in retaliation. Kill more whites to help further lower our numbers. It's not right, it's actually criminal. Yes, I also know what genocide means. It means the elimination of every element of a culture/race from actual existence. Wiped out. Exterminated. Which is what the Zionists are trying to do to us.

The Trayvon Martin story was "picked up" and people were misled about the facts. The fact is the kid attacked Zimmerman, and Zimmerman shot in self defense, which under Florida law, is perfectly legal. That's why he's not arrested, and if there's any justice left in this country, he won't ever be for this. Trayvon confronted him from behind, acting like some idiot thug. He punched Zimmerman in the nose, knocking him down, and commenced to pounding dude's head into the ground. There's a leaked partial police report that talks about Zimmerman having nose and back of the head injuries that coroborate his story.

I believe interracial to be ungodly. I believe that because it is. God Himself said in Ezra, Ch 9 verse 12, "Give not your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters to your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth forever" I don't have the entire quote because I don't have my bible with me and I'm not allowed to use my Android while at work. God Himself says it's wrong, who am I to argue?

As to the Hitler comment... pretty low, considering you don't know me. Another "I'm not smart enough to actually counter anything so I'll just scream anti-semitism and holocaust to shut people up" strategy. Doesn't work with me. My wife taught me better.

      Ha!

It can be sort of fun talking to anti-semites because you're so blinded by hate that you stare truth in the face and can still believe a lie. As for my genetic heritage..... how can jews all have a different type of genetic chemistry when they're spread out throughout the world? Does an ethiopian jew have the same skin color as a russian ashken.azi jew? Um.... no! Jews might all look pretty much the same if we had the same genetic heritage buuuuut.... as it turns out, it isn't the case. It is adorable that you want to insist your wife is jewish because of....blood? Well believe me, I'll talk to the elders on the council to raid her banks accounts and ruin you financially... because thats what us jews do.... we like money and hate wh.itey.... clearly.

As for your whole "jesus healed people" and other bull.shi.t...yeah.... um sorry, that didn't happen, but I'm not shocked someone like you could believe it. Did you know that I healed someone the other day? I mean, if you believe everything you read, then believe me now, I'm telling the truth because I would never lie....

As for being against interracial marriage, love and so on.... well what can I say, of course a loving god would be his chosen people down on earth, surrounded by enemies that they shouldn't intermingle with and then once PAUL (not jesus) deiced to spread jesus's word to the gent.iles, that only included white gentiles right?

As for the hit.ler comment, did I offend you? Boy that evil hit.ler who's goal was to keep the white race pure and hated minorities and jews especially, was against any intermingling of races and also believed that jews were separate from the rest human chemistry.... yeah that doesn't sound like anyone I'm talking to here.....except for you that is. Do you believe Hitler was evil, if so, I guess that just adds to another layer to your id.iocy and hypocrisy, but hey it's your brain you're turning into a clu.ster.fu.ck, not mine.

@Gokubi: I'd love to see what "hate" I've thrown at you. Because I haven't. Sorry. I've actually matched you and beaten you point for point. You want to call that hate, that's fine, but that's entirely up to you. I call the atheists' posts on here hate speech because it's all insults and inflammatory comments. That's my opinion. I'm sure if I were to insult them they'd call it hate speech. Everyone has a differing opinion of hate, after all.

From what I understand from studying genetics, actual Semites (or the descendants thereof, since the original Semite tribe vanished into Babylon until the rise of Abraham) carry certain genetic sequences that no other race on earth has. Anyone that has Semitic ancestry can be traced through blood tests looking for those sequences. This is how my wife's ancestry was discovered, and it was actually verified on the Jewish Geneaology website. Again, also notice I'm seperating out Jews and Zionists, while you make it sound as if they are one and the same. You actually sound more Anti-Semitic than I do. Interesting.

Jesus actually did heal people. It's been heavily recorded in multiple books of the bible. Jesus originally healed a Canaanite woman's daughter because of her humility, and accepted us Gentiles into the love and grace of God through her. Paul spread Jesus' gospel because Jesus instructed him too. Peter did much the same in Antioch. Mary Magdelene did the same in France. This was all God's design.

Hitler, in theory, killed millions of people. I'm not really happy with that idea. I don't particularily believe in killing unless it's in self defense, and even then I'd rather disable than kill. That's just me though.

      @Gods

Well kudos for being able to separate jews and zionists, want a cookie? And hate is hate, whether you think it's hateful or not. You believe interracial marriage is wrong? That's hate my friend. What about calling me a fairly pathetic individual and then in the same breath talking about ad hominem attacks? Precious, really, just adorable stuff you got there.

Also, like I said, I healed a bunch of people, it happened because I said it did and people I know can attest to it? Don't believe them? Well then you're a heretic so... yeah, I know this must be awkward for ya because I guess I'm going to be your new messiah soon, how much is that gonna suck for you?
You know who the biggest zionist ever in history was? Oh yeah.... Jesus.

Also, Jesus only preached to jews, and him like most jews (and zionists) believe that gentiles aren't evil, just not chosen. I know it probably bums you out that no matter how hard you pray or try you'll never be part of gods chosen people and that this jew here is going to be favored by god way more than you because he chose for me to be a jew and you not.

Hitler, in actuality, killed millions of people based on the exact same lies you intend to spread, it's a good thing no one really takes you seriously other than some other neo-nazi's.
