Muslim voters could swing election, report findsBy Richard Allen Greene, CNN (CNN) - The number of Muslims in the United States is tiny - less than one in 100 Americans - but their votes could sway the results of the presidential election in November, a new study says. That's because they are concentrated in a number of key swing states, says Farid Senzai, the author of the report. Take Florida, for example, the state that famously swung the 2000 presidential election for George W. Bush over Al Gore. Bush won by 537 votes - while a get-out-the-vote phone bank contacted 23,000 Muslims in one day during elections in 2008 and 2010, the report says. Nauman Abbasi - the head of Emerge USA, which ran the phone bank - says efforts like his will increase Muslim voter turnout. There are about 1.2 million registered Muslim voters in the United States, according to the study, "Engaging American Muslims." More religious Muslims and those more involved in their mosques are more likely to vote, it found. The biggest Muslim populations are in New York and California, which are unlikely to be battleground states in November. But the next largest numbers of Muslim voters are found in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Virginia, all of which could be key battlegrounds between President Barack Obama and his Republican opponent. Florida and Ohio, two states that have been decided by razor-thin margins in recent years, also have enough Muslim voters to make a difference to the final result, the report says. Of course, many other, larger constituencies, from Hispanics to women to the unemployed to political independents, could also claim to be the key ingredient in a winning coalition. And Muslim voters have much the same concerns as the population at large, with domestic issues and the economy dominating, the study says. Most Muslims voted for Bush in 2000, Democratic Sen. John Kerry in 2004 and Obama in 2008. They are more likely than the population as a whole to approve of Obama's performance now, the study found. The report comes from the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, a Washington think tank focusing on Muslim issues. It is based largely on earlier data from sources including Gallup, Zogby International and the Pew Research Center.

Your comment makes no sense since the article says the majority of American Muslims have supported the Democratic candidate in the last two Presidential elections, and seem to be even more supportive of Obama this time around.
Muslims are actually FOR WOMEN. not against! They believe Women should be women! Republicans, Democrats and Dum bass Atheists believe that women should be like Men. They should work like men, pay their own bills like men AND ON TOP OF THAT, they should get pregnant and bear children. But men don't have to!!! I can't think of a more ANTI-WOMAN stance than that!!!

vs101, you are on to something. It appears that CNN has been chasing the FAUX business model for some time now. They have been bending over backwards to be "Fair and Balanced" and engaging in a thinly veiled attempt to attract some of FAUX's Joe SixPack followers.
Note to CNN, you can not outfox FAUX, nor should you want to! That just leads to journalism with very low performance standards. You need to find your own unique way to attract followers that embodies high integrity. Going the way of the FAUX business model will not be good for CNN.

Fox news and GOP politicians have turned off Muslim voters almost certainly. They can't be surprised.
The Muslims I know from my office are no different from non-Muslims politically. Some Democratic, some Republican.
I agree that Muslims I know are like any other Americans but I would guess that after the GOP's and FOX news very hateful spewing about Muslims these past years and their criticism of Obama by calling him (gasp) a Muslim that many are leaning away from GOP candidates.

Looks like you guys didnt read the article. George Bush won in 2000 by about 600 votes in Florida. So yes, the 1 million or so muslims in key swing states can make a difference. Go study civics and basic math.

Well, let's see, let's compare the two.
The Islamic "crusades" were general expansions of power in the same way as the expansion of the Roman Empire. They brought their culture, knowledge and in many cases conquered without blood.
The Crusades on other hand was the target extermination of opposing religious and political groups. So... yeah..
Charles, it isn't a contest. Muslims conquered other countries violently and killed throughout history and Christians are responsible for the Crusades, the Holocaust (the Nazis were self-proclaimed Christians killing non-Christians), the inquisition, etc. When one side paints the other all evil and ignores their own wrongs it rubs me as very ignorant of history.

You can argue that the crusades were in the name of God, but find where it says that doing such was biblical. It wasnt and still isnt. So technically, they are defying Jesus by the crusades. It was in the name of Christianity, yes, but if Jesus were there he would have condemned it.

In the context of the question absolutely not. 86% of people in America claim to be Christian. How is this possible with immorality running rampant through the streets? So when Jesus tells us that not everyone who claims to be a Christian is truly Christian, you will know them by their "fruits", I will take Jesus at his Word every time. Not everyone who says they are Christian is truly Christian. Yes, that goes for the pope as well, even though I dont believe that Catholicism is true Christianity but that is besides the point.

Stoning women, rules for women, preparing to kill your child because the voice of God commanded it. We have had church burnings here by "Christians" to protest civil rights. I agree with Common Sense. I tried to become religious in high school and read my bible everyday. It is full of contradictions just like the bible. You have to take it as a whole and understand the overall message. If you start cherry picking verses then you can twist its meaning....
I am not real sure to make of your post CommonSense to be honest. There is more than one covenant and I think you are referring to the Old Testament, real wrath of God type stuff, but from Jesus on we are covered under a new covenant. The preparing to kill the child thing, I think you are referring to Abraham but God always knew that He was going to stop that dagger and it would never touch his son and it didnt. Stoning was under law, NOT GODs' law. The jews at the time kept making more and more laws so that they controlled every aspect of your life, which was not the intent of the ten commandments. So when Jesus came, He came to establish the law, not destroy it. He put everything on a higher plane of thinking that condemned everyone, so people realized that they had absolutely no merit. This is why the Jews hated Jesus so much that it escalated to the crucifixion.

Athiests like to pull out 3,000 year old quotes from the time of Abraham and claim this is what Christian think. The quotes regarding Islam and the quran may also be pulled out of context from a verse that no one applies today. If we are doing the same thing to the Quran then that is wrong.

You sound really filled with fear. I"m sorry you feel so afraid. Whatever source you are using about the Quaran isn't a very good one. The Quaran does not say that about Jews. Jews have lived in many p arts of the middle east for hundreds of years peacefully (Iran, etc). It is only in recent history that there is so much animosity by Muslims against Israel and in a lot of cases, unfortunately, against all Jews as well.
