Vatican blasts American nuns, calls for reforms

By Eric Marrapodi, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor

(CNN) - The Vatican is turning up the heat on a group of nuns it says are operating outside of the Roman Catholic Church's doctrines.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, the church’s doctrinal watchdog, on Wednesday announced the conclusion of a years-long “doctrinal assessment” investigation of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, which represents 80% of the Catholic nuns in the United States.

The “assessment reveals serious doctrinal problems,” said the report, which called for major reforms.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith appointed Archbishop Peter Sartain of Seattle to institute those reforms.

The report singled out a Washington, DC social justice group called Network, which is run by nuns and the Resource Center for Religious Institutes, which assists members with financial and legal resources.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

The Vatican report, made public by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the doctrinal assessment began in part because of the group’s dissent on the Holy See’s teaching on the ordination of women and human sexuality.  The Catholic Church ordains only men to be priests and says sex is to be reserved for between a man and woman who are married in the eyes of the church.

The assessment said that a Leadership Conference of Women Religious conference yielded “manifest problematic statements and serious theological, even doctrinal errors,” that went unchallenged.   It also said the event promoted “radical feminism”and decried the “prevalence of certain radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith in some programs and presentations sponsored by the LCWR...”

While the assessment praised the social justice work of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, Network and the Resources Center for Religious Life, it said the groups were “silent on the right to life from conception to natural death” and on the Church’s view on “family life and human sexuality.”

The report also took note of public statements from the nuns that opposed the Catholic Bishops. The Leadership Conference of Women Religious and Network vocally disagreed with the Bishops' conference's position on the Affordable Care Act, which they supported and the Bishops did not.

The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith called the current doctrinal and pastoral positions of the groups “grave and a matter of serious concern,” because of the global influence of the groups.

Pope Benedict XVI approved the request from the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith to intervene and the implementation of their recommended changes, the doctrinal office said in its assessment.

Some of the changes to come include a revision of the LCWR statutes, a review of programs including their annual general assembly, and a review of their ties with Network and Resource Center for Religious Institutes.

Cardinal William Levada, a former Archbishop in the United States and now the Prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, said in a statement that the the Vatican process is aimed at “fostering a patient and collaborative renewal of this conference of major superiors in order to provide a stronger doctrinal foundation for its many laudable initiatives and activities.”

The sisters, for their part, expressed surprised at the findings. “Because the leadership of LCWR has the custom of meeting annually with the staff of CDF in Rome and because the conference follows canonically-approved statutes, we were taken by surprise," the Leadership Conference of Women Religious said in a statement.

"This is a moment of great import for religious life and the wider church," the statement continued. "We ask your prayers as we meet with the LCWR National Board within the coming month to review the mandate and prepare a response.”

The rush to the door continues:

Recognizing the flaws, follies and frauds in the foundations of Islam, Judaism and Christianity, the "bowers", kneelers" and "pew peasants" are converging these religions into some simple rules of life. No koran, bible, clerics, nuns, monks, imams, evangelicals, ayatollahs, rabbis, professors of religion or priests needed or desired.

Ditto for houses of "worthless worship" aka mosques, churches, basilicas, cathedrals, temples and synagogues.

Can't forget baseball stadiums and football stadiums can we now? EWTN like all Tv affiliations of the religious orders are merely raking in the dough from weak minds and/or heartfelt sinful souls! What a racket they have! Some of them are so good at racketeering their Faith(s), they get away with it legally because the politcal arenas are head over heels caught up in it!

It's about time ! These nuns have been abusing the tenets and laws of the Church for many years and it is sickening. Stop with the feminism stuff and get real. The Catholic Church is about getting people to heaven and all its teachings are all for good reason. The Truth, which is Jesus Christ, sets us free and following the magesterium sets us free.

JC's family and friends had it right 2000 years ago ( Mark 3: 21 "And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.")

Said passage is one of the few judged to be authentic by most contemporary NT scholars. e.g. See Professor Ludemann's conclusion in his book, Jesus After 2000 Years, p. 24 and p. 694.

Actually, Jesus was a bit "touched". After all he thought he spoke to Satan, thought he changed water into wine, thought he raised Lazarus from the dead etc. In today's world, said Jesus would be declared legally insane.

Or did P, M, M, L and J simply make him into a first century magic-man via their epistles and gospels of semi-fiction? Many contemporary NT experts after thorough analyses of all the scriptures go with the latter magic-man conclusion with J's gospel being mostly fiction.

Obviously, today's followers of Paul et al's "magic-man" are also a bit on the odd side believing in all the Christian mumbo jumbo about bodies resurrecting, and exorcisms, and miracles, and "magic-man atonement, and infallible, old, European/Utah white men, and 24/7 body/blood sacrifices followed by consumption of said sacrifices. Yummy!!!!

So why do we really care what a first century CE, illiterate, long-dead, preacher/magic man would do or say?

I feel a compelling want to tell you about some verses in Gospel scripture. Is it not written to above all things to seek firstly the "Kingdom of God". This said, have you ascribed to doing so? Where does one look to or towards in order to find that which we are told to seek as scripture does declare one to do?

Mathew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

The Gospels have within its' writings their precepts as to just where the Kingdom of God is located! Do you Leo know of the whereabouts and exact location of God's Kingdom Domains? I've searched the Gospel writings and have found a single verse telling all who have found it as to the true and literal location of God's Kingdomly Domains!

Luk 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is inside you.

I take Luke 17:21 quite literally and so should all who believe in One God and His One Son of perhaps oodles upon oodles of otherly Sons and Daughters too numerous to really expound upon! Christ is special because he was born to take upon his being the sins of those who were and then were also and of times yet to come! God's Kingdoms being inside us and within our ownliness bodies can also be associated with another verse of scripture ,,,,
1Corinthians 3:9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, [ye are] God's building.

The just above verse does tell much more than just glimpsing over it could proclude! Our being labourers with God may well seem to give us all an equal footing with God and his aspirations for our betterment's sakes! His being our husbandry may well regard God as having a firm footing in our conceptions of childbirthing beyond mere genetic understandings! But in the aboveness verse, the very understanding that we or our bodies are God's buildings may well inspire one to disavow such a claim due one's foresightedness sakes and lacking of rationalisms' of credible resources. Yet, as I see things, we, our bodies are not only God established and God created buildings for the benefits of the Godly who reside inside of us, but are for our benefits for learning and understanding the precepts of "Fractal Cosmologies"!

We have seen that which our bodies are made up of and they are of cellularized structures not "unlike" stellarized structures in outer space places! These stellarized structures are yet a work-in-progress and our body-like buildings are a progress in the works!

These words are revelations of my Faith as to my Godly understandings regarding the Kingdom Domains of God, his Sons and his Daughters and all forms and mannerisms of Life-ever-lasting principles and principalities of progressives!

"May God's mercies be ever in abundant measures and may God grace all His buildings in due Time!

"It also said the event promoted “radical feminism”and decried the “prevalence of certain radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith in some programs and presentations sponsored by the LCWR...”"

LOL. these misogynistic idiots call women wanting equal anything feminism. keep going. keep pushing women out. keep living in the 10th century. this is why church attendance is at an all time low. and on the side, why would women join a club where they aren't treated as equals. of course the bible backs up catholic beliefs on women:

1Cor.14:34-35 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.

35 And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

pretty straight forward. you have nothing to teach a man and should listen to what your husband tells you. LOL. and yet women still join the cult of christianity. unbelievable.

not to mention stuff like you should kill non-v.irgin brides,

Deuteronomy 22:13-21 – "If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid: Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's v.irginity unto the elders of the city in the gate…. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. And the elders of that city shall take that man and chastise him; and they shall amerse him in an hundred shekels of silver, and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he has brought up an evil name upon a v.irgin of Israel; and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days. But if this thing be true, and the tokens of v.irginity be not found for the damsel: Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she has wrought folly in Israel, to play the w.hore in her father's house…."

I am an ugliness beyond the ugly of uglier! I am a vomit bag looking for a waste basket! May God find mercies upon my ugliness ways and meanings! Is this Life all there is? No After-death Life?

Pretty odd for a church which worships Mary more than Jesus. You know Mother of God and all that. This church was founded on the belief that Mary was Holy, not a second class citizen. You would think they would have a little more respect for the women of today.Oh,yes I forgot.......it is still run by earthly men who think they should rule the entire earth from Rome. With so much attention on the pedophilia of some of the men,I am a little surprised they have not tried to implicate nuns in some sort of sordid affairs. But they are required to be celibate and chaste aren't they?

    • gerald

Mikstov, Your display of ignorance is breathtaking. We worship Mary more than Jesus? Apparently you have no clue what the Mass, the highest form of worship in the Church is about. We do honor Mary. We do not worship her. As for her being the Mother of God, well I will take Elizabeth's words over your's any time. After all she was filled with the Holy Spirit when she said "how is it that the MOTHER OF MY LORD should come to me". Now tell me, was Jesus Lord because he was man or God? It's pretty clear. Now I do understand your confusion since you think that because he is his mother Mary would have to have preceded Jesus. But all it means is that God was in her womb and she gave birth to Jesus as God. Now surely you can grasp that.

The real news story, that has not been explored, is what has changed in the Vatican? Why has the Vatican become more aggressive lately? Dissenting priests and nuns are nothing new. Most people have ignored the loyal opposition for decades. By cracking down on them, the Vatican has drawn attention to serious doctrinal issues. Is the church stupid, scared or just arrogant?

How about a 4th choice? Standing up for what is right and providing the guidance that has been sorely missing. The bishops are the teaching heads of the church and are supposed to stand up and provide guidance when needed. The church has been such a target the last few years, mostly of their own making because of the failures of the bishops to handle the s3x abuse scandals properly. They had to be dragged kicking and screams to get it fixed. And not so much from ignoring the problem as not knowing how to handle it. They relied for years on experts who also didn't know what to do themselves. They still have a long way to go, but have done much to correct the problems. And now they need to get back to the work they are there to do, which is to lead the church.

      April 19, 2012 at 10:18 pm |

Ok KeninTexas, the Church chose to provide guidance to those who speak their conscience. Whose moral judgment has failed the most, those who speak of reform or those who silently sin? So the beatings will continue until morals improve.

The pope and his horde of arrogant self-righteous bishops, cardinals and child molesting priests need to get over themselves. They have NO more power to harm us. Women are the primary gender yet these vain religious male leaders feel they have the right to lord over them as if they know better because they're men and therefore would assume social superiority over them. Their abuse of secular power ended in 1870 and they need to recognize that most of the world believe they espouse a false masculine belief system that has damaged humanity for 1545 years. We are still recoverig from it. The sooner this Catholic faith dies the better off we'll all be. The Vatican with it's robed skeletons, icons and fancy trappings is no longer relevant to our lives.

That's a great idea. They can join the protestants who disagreed with the Catholic Church and started their own church. And again, and again and again. Seems like whenever someone doesn't like what they hear, they just start another church. Which explans why there are over 40,000 differrent protestant churchs these days. Thinking on it, maybe starting your own church when you disagree with something isn't such a good idea.

"By their fruits ye shall know them". I cannot respect and obey a dogma that condones systematic torture, abuse and repression of women, children and those of diverse cultures who believe differently – throughout history – not just the present day. Never has Christ been depicted sitting on a throne clad in red silks embroidered with gold, hands covered in jewels. I firmly believe that those who purport to serve Him should also behave according to His teachings. Remember, it was women who stayed true to Christ while all the disciples went into hiding, defying real danger to search the tomb and discover He is risen. Looks like a lot of men are still hiding behind cloth of gold instead of "manning up" to true Christianity.

The Catholic Church is the Church Christ founded and continues (otherwise improbably) in an unbroken line of authority to this day. Christ left himself with us in the Sacraments and these are what the Catholic Church observes. It has nothing to hide and there is no ambiguity in its position, which is outlined by Christ and in Acts and Paul's letters in the New Testament. I can understand denying Christ is God as people do it every day. But there can be no question that the Catholic Church worships the Trinity as set forth in the New Testament. The New Testament is "strange" to the natural, unregenerated man or woman, and full of "strange" directives (i.e., the Eucharist, etc.), and full of the word "no" and as such it is (and has been) rejected by many over the past 2000 years. Your position is common.

John, you are not answering the wonderful comment being made about women. Obviously you have a problem with women. You spout generalities which are nonsense. No, John, Jesus never said that sacraments would be practiced or that you would be saved through any sacraments. That is the teaching of your crazy church which wants power over people's minds. John, your church allowed marriage of priests up until about 700 years ago. What happened? God changed her mind, John? You have a new mandate about the infallibility of the pope which is less than 200 years. A new revelation John? Should we discuss virgin birth John and how that came about and the fact that it has nothing to do with spirituality but rather it has to do with dark ages and their lack of knowledge of human reproduction? Should we speak about the millions killed by the church in North America when Columbus came over? Yes, millions, John. Church was culpable and wanted a piece of the action. Should I keep going John or are you that blind?

If you leave this Church, after being fully informed of why the Church stands strong on marriage, birth-control, male priests - what other Church are you going to? Make one up? People don't get it. They want what they want, when they want it. No one likes to be told that what they are doing is actually 'bad' for them. Is there another Church that has the Truth to tell this? There is NO other Church in this world that Christ founded. Better to err on The Shepherd's side than be part of a wondering flock being ripped apart by wolves.

If one does not believe in what the church is doing in the world then one can join another type of church or other religion. There are plenty. One does not have any need to 'make one up'. That is illogical. YOU may think the Catholic church is the same as what Jesus was doing but Jesus was JEWISH. If you went back in time and met Jesus, if he even existed, he would certainly tell you he was Jewish, not Christian and certainly not Catholic. Catholicism came after early Christians. Early Christians considered themselves just another Jewish sect and it wasn't for quite some time that they saw themselves as a separate religion. maybe you should study some history from an actual historian and not a biased church source.

If your faith is only as strong as Pascal's Wager, well...

Andy care to back that one up? Which of the 30,000 protestant denominations were around when the Apostles walked the earth? The Catholic Church is the only one that can be traced back in time to Christ and the Apostles. Just look up a list of Popes in the encyclopedia. All the way back to Pete bro.

Beth, the early "Christians" called themselves "Catholic" - as in "one holy, catholic and apostolic church" from the Apostle's Creed written in 390 based on similar language from the "Great Commission" possibly written in 180. It were the opponents of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church that tended to call Christ's followers "Christians" which was thought to be a pejorative term. Christ established his "Church" as set forth in Matthew 6:18. That Church observed the Eucharist (from John 6) and engaged in many of the other Sacramental practices still observed by the one holy Catholic and apostolic Church. The Catholic Church IS the true Church and you should come to a Latin Mass and love it! "It's the most beautiful thing this side of heaven." Don't fancy yourself a free-thinker because you have believed the lies about the Church spoken by the enemy (within and without the Church) for the past 40 painful years in Church history. Join the Catholic revival!

Why doesn't the Church clean up its act in regard to those priests who are pedophiles? They have done far more grave damage than any women religious who are "feminists". They have hurt and taken advantage of so many people –especially young people–and still they stonewall to keep their perverts hidden. The nuns try to serve people, they live a modest lifestyle. They are willing to work with people whom society often looks upon as garbage. Until the Church becomes more transparent and admits its past transgressions it has lost credibility. Remember what they teach–something that they themselves have forgotten–better a man should have a millstone tied around his neck and be drowned than cause the little children to turn away from God.
So many Catholics have turned away from the Church and in a great part this is due to the scandalous behavior caused by some of the priests. Let them take the beam out of their own eyes before they go after the women religious.

It is cleaning up, you're just not reading about it in secular media. Try googling about it.

Sorry AME–the Church is too slow and still thinking itself above the law. It has a long long way to go.

Dear TC, there are millions of so-called baby boomers of many ages and backgrounds in this world. You can't blame or condemn an entire generation of people in one sentence and then tell Gardengirl to 'stop complaining' in the next, when in fact she is just part of a discussion that a number of us are having here – and which you seem to feel the need to interrupt with obstructionist comments. Really, join the actual conversation – or maybe just go elsewhere to blow off your hostility? Please.

Good Christ, now I recall why I am so irritated with the Catholic church all the time. With many of us "cafeteria catholics" leaving the church in droves and with the declining number of religious in the church, you would think those in power would spend a bit more of their time, looking at issues important to their members, rather than chastise a large group on nuns for doing the right thing.
The church is just so disappointing on so many levels !

Having worked under nuns, and lay Catholic women, for more than 30 years let me say this:
there is a lot of lust for power, infallible self-righteousness, and egalitarian envy of men among these women.
      They love to Rule!

Many bear a deep envy or animosity to males. Some are lesbian.

Most thin like this:women are equal to men in all important human ways, and better than men in many other important human ways. Women are the greater gender:they are all good things men can be, and so much more than that!

That's pure self-righteous self-adoration. As a highly educated man, I did not appreciate it!

They left because of Vatican II and that very attempt to "modernize" that you refer to. That "modernization" has failed as it is the work of the evil one and evidence of that should be everywhere for you to see. All these attacks on the Catholic Church are like so many rats gnawing at the central cedar pole of a tent not realizing that when they've chewed through it (as if they could) the tent will come crashing down on them. You are living on Catholic capital (as G.K. Chesterton put it) and don't even realize it. Go to a Latin Mass if you have never done so. It will change your life.

Right on Karen. And for John- he has not idea what he is talking about. In fact, he is not even a Catholic since he wishes to belong to a form of Catholic religion that went dead at Vatican ll. As for his precious Vatican mass, I have news for him: this is America and we speak English! People do not understand Latin so do read Apostle Paul and especially Corinthians where the Apostle talks about speaking in foreign tongues. He tells the people not to speak in foreign tongues if others do not understand for there should be order. Nobody understands the dead language. If you truly wanted to speak the language of the true church, John, then you would be speaking Aramaic, or Greek or even Hebrew. You would not be speaking the language of the people who crucified your savior. This is America and not the territory of a state (Vatican) created by Mussolini, John.
