Priest in gay porn probe leaves parish

An Irish priest at the center of a gay porn controversy has asked to leave his parish and take sabbatical leave from the priesthood, he said Sunday.

The Catholic Church in Ireland had launched an investigation after reports Father Martin McVeigh accidentally showed pictures of naked men to parents of children preparing for their First Holy Communion.

The incident happened at the start of a PowerPoint presentation at a grade school in Pomeroy, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland in March, said the leader of the Catholic Church in Ireland, Cardinal Sean Brady.

Parents said in a statement they were "horrified" by what they saw and called for action to be taken against the priest.

Prayer doesn’t not; you are such a LIAR. You have NO proof it changes anything! A great example of prayer proven not to work is the Christians in jail because prayer didn't work and their children died. For example: Susan Grady, who relied on prayer to heal her son. Nine-year-old Aaron Grady died and Susan Grady was arrested.

An article in the Journal of Pediatrics examined the deaths of 172 children from families who relied upon faith healing from 1975 to 1995. They concluded that four out of five ill children, who died under the care of faith healers or being left to prayer only, would most likely have survived if they had received medical care.

The statistical studies from the nineteenth century and the three CCU studies on prayer are quite consistent with the fact that humanity is wasting a huge amount of time on a procedure that simply doesn’t work. Nonetheless, faith in prayer is so pervasive and deeply rooted, you can be sure believers will continue to devise future studies in a desperate effort to confirm their beliefs!*!.~

Your post is moronic and obviously without thought. Read up on what the bible states about slavery. In short, it gives permission to own slaves. Clear enough for you?

      Now shut your piehole.

      April 29, 2012 at 11:29 pm |
    • VanHagar

I have read the Bible–more times that I can remember. I don't dispute that it acknowledges slavery and does not admonish the slavery that existed AT THAT TIME–which was an entirely different animal that we saw later–why don't you read some history. And I will not shut up–I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

      April 29, 2012 at 11:56 pm |
    • A Chair To Your Face

You've read the bible? I call bullshit. The bible gives direction on owning slaves. It doesn't just turn a blind eye to it. It flat out says it's ok to own slaves. Now shut the fuck up.

      April 30, 2012 at 12:03 am |
    • A Chair To Your Face

I bet if it was legal, you'd own slaves. You racist pile of garbage.

      April 30, 2012 at 12:04 am |
    • *sigh

The bible says that you can beat your slaves to death, provided they don't die of their injuries the same day. In what context would you consider that moral? The whole 'slavery was different back then' only takes into account the parts in the bible that talk about Hebrew slaves. It completely ignores slaves that were not Hebrew. These people could be sex slaves, were slaves for their entire lives, and could even be inherited? You've read the bible many times? I call total BS. Try actually reading the WHOLE THING next time. Fool.

    • Jeanine

As much as I despise the RCC and it's mmm people, the intemperate media frenzy has all but ensured that the public will convict him without any examination of the evidence.
Yes, it is quite possible he was "framed" as regards those pictures that came up during the presentation, in fact, considering how many people discuss doing such things online, it is almost certain that someone planted those pictures there.

The problem, if this turned out to be the case, would then be, absent a mistake on his part:
Were they his pictures from a different folder and were then put into his presentation?
Or did someone gather them independently to stick into his presentation?
And did they, assuming it wasn't the priest making an embarrassing mistake, do this to him because he molested them or someone they knew or were they just attacking him in this way just because he was a priest of a criminal organization and guilty by association or whatever it was that motivated them to do this?
But perhaps he just made a mistake. Being gay is not a crime. If there were no child-pron pics in the bunch, then maybe he isn't one of the priests that molest children, or maybe he used to do that but moved on, or he has the desire but has never acted on it, or uses pictures of gay men as a mental proxy of some sort. Yet he is a member of a criminal organization and as such has access and is likely to be in contact with proof or information on their criminal activities. But we have to follow the law, even if they refuse to, and so we should not be stampeding like a bunch of stupid cows on the basis of bad information.

There are too many unanswered questions, and with computers being the way they are and the limitations of forensics, we may never find out the truth whether it satisfies us or not or conforms with our expectations.
There are rules to evidence that we have to follow or risk being shown as blindly following a fairy tale the same as any Catholic.

    • Catch A Clue

Hey genius, did you not read the article? The priest accidentally shows gay porn to parents, destroys the evidence, says "I didn't do it", and what does the cardinal immediately say? "I believe him." Priest is moved, to eventually show up in the same capacity in a different parish.

Same old scam that perpetuated the abuse scandal, and it is still the standard operating procedure.

Remember: it is Catholic children who suffer the abuse!

Catch a clue indeed. I still don't get how he accidentally added the pictures to his presentation. That sounds kind of unbelievable. So when he said that he didn't know where the pictures came from I could see why the cardinal wouldn't necessarily assume he is lying. I do think destroying the evidence was incriminating, but it's hard to explain what will do under duress.

Hilarious! Then it gets very not hilarious: "He insisted he "was not responsible for the presence of the offending images." "Cardinal Brady said he accepted McVeigh had no advance knowledge of the pornography."

Evidence is destroyed, the offender offers denial, the Catholic official automatically accepts the denial. Classic.

Maybe, but there was more than one picture. I think it's mor likely someone set it up, or CNN messed up the reporting, and he actually just accidentally opened the pictures from his desktop or something. All I'm saying is given what it says in the article I can see how his story is feasible.

He probably had the computer set up on the projector and when he inserted the thumb drive, it opened the folder, showing thumbnails on the screen. Thumbnails of course, on a projected screen would show up with enough girth for all to see what was in the folder.

      "
FEAR, SHAME and GUILT and COVER IT ALL UP!!!

Obviously ordination in any religion is not assurance of good behavior !!!!!

Neither is coronation!!! e.g. Henry VIII, King David.

Neither is marriage as 50% of those men convicted of pedophilia are married.

Neither is being elected president of the USA!! e.g. Billy "I did not have se-x with that girl" Clinton, John "Marilyn Monroe" Kennedy".

Neither is possessing super athletic skill!!! e.g. Tiger "I am so sorry for getting caught" Woods.

Neither is being an atheist or pagan since pedophilia is present in all walks of life.

If someone is guilty of a crime in this litany of "neithers" they should or should have been penalized as the law dictates to include jail terms for pedophiliacs (priests, rabbis, evangelicals, boy scout leaders, married men/women), divorce for adultery (Clinton, Kennedy, Woods), jail terms for obstruction of justice (Clinton, Cardinal Law) and the death penalty or life in prison for murder ("Kings David and Henry VIII).

Recognizing the flaws, follies and frauds in the foundations of Islam, Judaism and Christianity, the "bowers", kneelers" and "pew peasants" are converging these religions into some simple rules of life. No koran, bible, clerics, nuns, monks, imams, evangelicals, ayatollahs, rabbis, professors of religion or priests needed or desired.
