Columnist Dan Savage stands by comments on 'bulls**t in the Bible'By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor (CNN) - Columnist and gay-rights advocate Dan Savage is standing by his comment that “we can learn to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about gay people” at a recent conference for high school students, a line that prompted some to walk out and spurred intense online debate. In a blog post on Sunday, Savage wrote that his remark at a conference for the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association was "being spun as an attack on Christianity. Which is bullshhh… which is untrue.” “I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised," Savage wrote. "I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against — and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying 'motivated by faith') — because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong.” Some Christian students walked out of the Seattle speech, prompting another controversial line from Savage: “It’s funny to someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansya**ed people react when you push back.” CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories Savage apologized for that specific remark in Sunday’s blog post, writing that his word choice “was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong.” One of the teachers attending the speech with his students told CNN’s Carol Costello on Monday that he was taken aback by the speech and that he supported the decision of some of his students to walk out of it. “It took a real dark, hostile turn, certainly, as I saw it,” said Rick Tuttle, a teacher at Sutter Union High School in Southern California. “It became very hostile toward Christianity, to the point that many students did walk out, including some of my students.” Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter “They felt that they were attacked … a very pointed, direct attack on one particular group of students. It’s amazing that we go to an anti-bullying speech and one group of students is picked on in particular, with harsh, profane language.” Watch CNN Newsroom weekdays 9am to 3pm ET and weekends. arguing with christians is akin to discussing the mating rituals of moray eels with a tree stump
leave the poor eels alone.
Exactly-they speak in absolutes.
pervert priests fondling me in my nightmares
That was your mom.
One would think that a journalist would have a vocabulary of words that contain more than four letters. Also if you are anti-bullying of Gays, then why bully christians. I am not anti gay, even though a am a christian. However, listening to people like you might change my mind.
Pointing out that religion is generally the root cause of most anti-gay bullying is not the same thing as bullying Christians.
If you are a Christian you need to stop arguing about the bible or Christ or God. State why you believe and leave it alone. Jesus didn't argue about who He is, so we shouldn't either. It's pointless....
Well, he would have reasoned with them but . . . . if one could reason with religious people, there would be no need to reason with religious people.
Not to mention it's hard to even TRY to reason with them when they walk away as soon as you start questioning anything they believe.
Bible is a book of faith folks... either you like it or ignore it. No reason to hate it.
You can have a problem with it when people use it to try to force the government to discriminate against certain people, especially when it is done selectively. This is why there is supposed to be a separation of church and state.
He was at a school with kids as the audience, he's suppose to be one of Obama's representatives for antibullying. He started foul filthy language and landblasting the Bible in front of the kids and when some walked out, he started mocking them. So this is Obama's anti bully guy? A bully that mocks children and talks filthy in front of them?
He was " at a conference for the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association."
Read the article.
I can think of a lot more words that would fall into the "foul and filth" category, other than "bullsh**". Seriously.
And, it's "lambasting", not "landblasting".
Good News. The Bible is Good News.
What we are missing in this day and age are great preachers like Billy Graham or D.L. Moody who preached the gospel and nothing but the gospel. Watched a Billy Graham sermon last night; they play them on TBN every weekend.
Wow
Billy Graham was a sophist ...
If the bible told me that GOD created the universe over the course of millions of years and that he didnt really judge humans or think they were superior to other living creatures and that he really just wants us to be caring and not judgemental of ANYONE and to not harm others needlessly, then I might actually take it to heart.
But this 7 day creation, talking snake, salt pillar sodomite, zombie ressurection jibber jabber just makes me laugh out loud.
So, what you are saying is that if God wasn't capable of doing much of anything incredible, that's a God you could buy into? Universe. Life. Mankind. The animal kingdom.
agreed
Check out Ravi Zacharias' website sometime. The guy is brilliant.
If you think it is all such b.s., why do you waste your time commenting on it?
sorry, but creating a god in your own image doesn't work in God's economy
No, I'm pretty sure you were attacking the Bible cupcake..............
And that's just inexcusable, isn't it?
Kudos to him. Religion is a mental illness and the bible is science fiction. Any adult with half a brain knows this.
That's why people with a complete brain don't...
And you've come to this knowledge because you only have half a brain.
"science" ? really? or did you misspeak? If you misspoke, maybe you misthought.
Why stop at just the parts about gay people? The entire Bible is a load of bull. Woman being created from a spare rib, a god that can flood an entire planet but needs an old man to round up pairs of every animal, people turning into pillars of salt, burning bushes, water into wine, rivers into blood ... the entire thing reads like a Stephen King novel.
Mahatma Gandhi – "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

"The things of the Spirit are foolishness to them that are perishing"...dear!
The one question I have about Jesus is why is the only evidence that he lived contained in the first four books of the New testament? the Romans were EXCELLENT record keeps and there is not one mention of him? All of the trouble he caused them? His trial? Anything?
If he really lived, there must be SOME historical record of him when you think of how much impact he had on history.
But in reality? Zip.
When you hear the bible apologists start throwing around named like Josephus, Tacitus & Pliny the Younger just keep in mind that these are not what you are asking for, they all came decades if not centuries after Jesus was supposed to have walked the earth. There is no contemporary evidence that a carpenter named Jesus lived, taught and was exucuted at the hands of the Romans, not even the gospels which were also written several decades later.
Mahatma Gandhi – "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."
Bible or no Bible, the gay act, male or female, is totally disgusting and weird. And gay men always have strange smelling breath. Sashay walk, over-exaggerated mannerisms and way of speaking – born this way? No. Takes a lot of effort to put on such an act just to be different and make a statement. Well, us straight people aren't impressed. Disgusted, yes but not impressed. Fix your mental disorder instead of trying to brainwash the rest of us into thinking the gay way is the right way. Freaks.
I agree, you are crazy
possibly the most ignorant post of the day. Great job!
You're the freak Crazy Tina. I'm so gay men practice on sashaying all the time and what are you doing going around smelling gay men's breaths?
Aside from all her obviosly bigoted views, she makes a fallacious statement that I think many Christians do believe:
"trying to brainwash the rest of us into thinking the gay way is the right way."
There are no gay people out trying to convert your children. No gay people are preaching that living a gay lifestyle is better for you or healthier for you than a straight lifestyle. There are no gay people trying to pass laws to prohibit straight s.ex behavior.
Much in the Bible is a timeless road map for living a good life. One that supports all others, loves unconditionally, reaches out to those less fortunate but the rest is BS. Listen to Jesus, then dump all the rest.
It's timeless since it existed long prior to the bible taking credit for it.
All you FAT PEOPLE!
The bible calls GLUTTONY a sin about SIXTEEN TIMES – with NO EQUIVOCATION or explanation. There is no question BEING GLUTTONOUS (i.e. FAT) is a sin.
The passages bashing gays are NOWHERE NEAR AS CLEAR (if read in the original – the Nicean translation GETS IT WRONG).
So you fat people: GET THIN! You are living a LIFE OF SIN.
AND IF YOU ARE FIVE POUND OVERWEIGHT, DON'T YOU DARE BASH GAY PEOPLE!
P.S. – I am straight.
Any questions?
So many right wing Christians. So few lions.
Christians really need to start acting more like Islamic Fundamentalist if they want respect from Liberals.
You mean go back to their roots?
