Columnist Dan Savage stands by comments on 'bulls**t in the Bible'By Dan Gilgoff, CNN.com Religion Editor (CNN) - Columnist and gay-rights advocate Dan Savage is standing by his comment that “we can learn to ignore the bulls**t in the Bible about gay people” at a recent conference for high school students, a line that prompted some to walk out and spurred intense online debate. In a blog post on Sunday, Savage wrote that his remark at a conference for the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association was "being spun as an attack on Christianity. Which is bullshhh… which is untrue.” “I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised," Savage wrote. "I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against — and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying 'motivated by faith') — because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong.” Some Christian students walked out of the Seattle speech, prompting another controversial line from Savage: “It’s funny to someone who is on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible how pansya**ed people react when you push back.” CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories Savage apologized for that specific remark in Sunday’s blog post, writing that his word choice “was insulting, it was name-calling, and it was wrong.” One of the teachers attending the speech with his students told CNN’s Carol Costello on Monday that he was taken aback by the speech and that he supported the decision of some of his students to walk out of it. “It took a real dark, hostile turn, certainly, as I saw it,” said Rick Tuttle, a teacher at Sutter Union High School in Southern California. “It became very hostile toward Christianity, to the point that many students did walk out, including some of my students.” Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter “They felt that they were attacked … a very pointed, direct attack on one particular group of students. It’s amazing that we go to an anti-bullying speech and one group of students is picked on in particular, with harsh, profane language.” Watch CNN Newsroom weekdays 9am to 3pm ET and weekends. The entire bible is bu___. Talking snakes, Adam and Eve, not to mention the psychopath that is the god of the OT.
"Love thy neighbor as thyself. "
"Faith, Hope, and Love, but the greatest of these is Love."
Yep....sounds like awful stuff.....
Yup.. Christians are all about the Old Testament and Leviticus. Do they ever step back and take a look at their nonsense they spew – I'm talking about the enlightened lefties of course =P
This is a ginned up controversy. The christians playing the poor put upon minority when, in fact, they have a fully putrefying hold on the civilization already.
Christians are exactly why gay kids all over the country are killing themselves.
I've been gay a very long time and I've never met a gay hater that wasn't either closeted himself or a christian.
They hate gay people and discriminate against us; all the while screaming how much they love everybody.
I say if you can't stand the fire then stay the heck out of the kitchen i.e. politics
This wasn't a political speech they were attending, it was an ANTI-BULLYING speech. Turns out it was just a Christian-bashing conference.
You haven't met a real Christian yet then.
I am Christian. I have no hate for you. Just because I disagree with your choices doesn't mean I hate you. To me, it sounds like you are the one full of hate. So if you are saying the Christians make the world a worse place because they "hate" gays then you can count your self as part of the problem with the world in general by manifesting your hate as well.
Stacey, whom do you believe is behind most of the bullying of LGBT people?
aren't these future journalists? wow, ...if they walk away from something so benign in threat, where will they be in a warzone? i am sure many of them will find a place at FixedNews if they can talk the talk.
Poor little bible
Of course this guy, whom I'll refer to as Willy Wonka, rejects the bible! If he accepted it's validity, he could no longer live coming in through the back door! He'd have to use the front door. I think life as a dog would be much more honorable. Did you know that dogs eat their vomit?
Sounds like you just ate yours
You – personally – are reprehensible.
Ha Ha....like I said, it's more honorable! So I'll take that as a compliment! G of E!
so christians can dish it but you can't take it?
gays have been taking crap from christians for ages, so i can't complain seeing it go the other way around, and seeing what spineless crybabies they really are.
Your lesson: Two wrongs make a right.
so i'm guessing then, stacey, you're all over pro-gay pages defending them?
or do you only say stuff like that when it's you who's being attacked?
Wrong as usual!!
YES..."taking crap"...Ha, that's a good one!
You obviously don't know the history of Christianity. From the crucifixion of Christ himself to the martydom of 11 of the 12 apostles (Saint John died in exile) to the Chrsitians being thrown to the lions by Nero on up to the present day, Christians have "taken it" for centuries. If Christians started REALLY acting like you claim, there would be blood in the streets to this present day that you would not fathom.......
@ stacy No, the message is that we are sick of being slimed by so-called Christians and we're not going to take their bulls**t anymore. Nor are we going to take yours, stacy.
@ aidisgood When you get aids playing around with the "front door" as you say, we'll see how good you think aids is.
Send in the lions.
HA....@ Pencolapet...Being slimmed", you boy's are pretty familiar with being that by now aren't you?
Christianity may bully you for being gay but Islam will stone you in the street for it. I bet this guy is too scared to mention any of that in public.
less wrong is still wrong, mate..
But Muslims have little influence in the US, do they? So your remark is pretty irrelevant. It's the Christies that want to marginalize our gay brothers and sisters, not the Muslims!
So...?
more precisely: Christians are against it, but NOT bullying; moose-limes cut their heads off – alive.
DOES IT MAKE A DIFFERENCE??? I THINK SO.
You're right Jeff, because stoning is so much worse than being pistol-whipped, tortured, and hung up to die like a scarecrow. You think those good Christians that did that to Matt Shepherd used the "Islam is worse" idea to comfort themselves too? Or did they just join that a hole Fred Phelps in spitting on the kid's grave?
If you so-called Christians marginalize me, I will attack you from the margins.
A heaping helping of Stupid for Jeff with his fatwa-envy.
Excellent job, Jeff.
Your bucket of stupid awaits at the exit...
The interviewer in the vid, Carole Costello, had a very condescending look on her face and mocking tone in her questions.
CNN, if you are going to have someone interview another, perhaps a reporter with more professionalism should be in order.
I see people here writing that Dan Sa√age was himself bullying people. Who, exactly? Did he call anyone out by name? By description? Did he say that any particular PERSON was somehow inferior or unworthy of respect? Did he taunt or vilify someone? Let alone push anyone around or beat them up?
No. He did none of those things. He called out a BOOK. And not even the entire book, just one hateful portion of it. How, exactly, does this const¡tute bullying?
Yes, he called them 'pansy-a#$' as they were walking out. If that isn't bullying I don't know what is.
THANK YOU for making sense
Bullying is not defined by hateful actions against one individual, and it certainly is not limited to physical actions. While I agree that he was speaking about the book, his aggressive nature and overall message that Christians who defend gay bigotry are pansies is absolutely bullying. Just the fact that you think it's not unless it's for one person or it's physical is what's wrong with a lot of people.
Pansy a$$ for walking out of his tantrum? Really? I wonder who had the microphone and the voice? Him or a "Christian"?
If there is a god, he's mean and cold, and uncaring!@
right on!!!!!
What do they want him to do, defend a book which says quite literally that gay people should die?
Is it Christians or Muslims that are k!lling gays? I can't keep it straight.
I think he wants to be Obama’s new gay Safety School czar like his old one Jennings. He was teaching kids all about fisting , the heck with reading and writing. Kal Penn Obama’s boy toy would get jealous though.
Please Check out song called teapartiers I can’t hear you at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJfboOindCo
Here’s a verse
The real teabaggers are Barnie and the safe school czar
Your kids aren’t safe in a bus or car
Jennings might not report it if their molested at a bus station
lets hope he don’t have Nambla take them on vacation
Shows where the intolerance REALLY comes from. Great that this is OUT in public, pun intended.
I'm ready for the new crusades where we all get together and put a piece of metal into everyone's brain that has a religious book.
yup you're just like the over religious idiots... good job advocating ma and pa must be proud
You are scary. You need help.
no guy. I'm just tired of always playing defense.
Keep spreading the hate.
What a hater you are!
Don't hold back. Tell us what you really think: Not only should there be no religious freedom in this country, but religious people should be painfully and violently killed.
Now who's the bully? Heck, who's the violent, hate-filled barbarian?
I"m not violent. But i am hate-filled I guess. The same way each of you religious nuts would be hate filled over a pedo or a murderer.
So what your all saying is that going off to a land to kill people over their religion is ok. Unless its you. nice.
Rico ... or whatever his real name is ... is a good reminder whenever someone goes to a Holocaust museum and mutters "Gee, how could people have been so hateful toward a religion...?"
what a moron
True. Seriously, we can actually do this we just have to:
1.) Keep pushing for legislation that we have already passed that outlaws Christian speech in public as "hate speech."
2.) After enough of America has those laws and the Supreme Court has let the Federal ones stay we push for greater penalties on violations and start pushing for churches to be labeled as "conspirators."
3.) Solidify such penalties as capital punishment and we will have cleared out the Christians.
Seriously, everyone on the left, we have made huge progress and now it is time for us to finish the job. KEEP PUSHING TO OUTLAW CHRISTIANITY!!! Rico, your post is no less short of a Hitler speech but that is totally okay because we are on the left-side of politics so we cannot possibly be persecutors, victimizers, or bullies! It is our destiny to produce genocides again and again and again through history and then blame the "guilty." Go us, go "peaceful resistance" genocide, and go Obama!!! Hahaha.
Glad to see you admit you're hate-filled.
But you also need to admit you're violent, because you just advocated violence against Christians.
If Rico's post had used the word "GAY BOOK" rather than "RELIGIOUS BOOK" ... Holder's FBI goons would probably already've been hauling him off in chains for his terrorist threat – hate crime trial.
Just Curious Rico,,, going off to a foreign land to kill people over their religion... sound familiar???? I am sure that only Christians have done that..... No wait... NYC 2001, Isreal.... then there was the coptic masacres.,,,, oh yeah ... so are you mad at them???? Check out the punishment in I_sl-am for being gay.... which is worse?
The Left has tought us a lesson here, it's ok to bully if the ends justify the means. We need a new handbook on when it's ok to bully, it can be very confusing.
clearly you're too stupid to learn the real lesson.
The Left seems obsessively compelled to demonstrate .. again and again .. that it is HATEFUL, INTOLERANT, UN-INCLUSIVE and CONTEMPTUOUS OF DIVERSITY.
whoever hired this a hole should be burned at the stake.
Jesus loves the smell of burning flesh and the screams of those who are burning.
people like you misinterpret the bible and bring shame on religion you're no better than the taliban. on that note I'm glad the US gives me the right to bear arms just incase you and you're cronies ever get too serious about you're linching and burning at the steak agendas
Typical fundamentalist idea. His ideas disagree with you so you must kill him painfully instead. The best way to corrupt a youth is to make them believe that those who think differently are bad and those who think similarly are better. You must be one of those youth.
God is an imaginary friend for grownups. You have a choice and a brain. Use it.
Nice! When will they get it?!
Hm, I guess you still think the world is flat also? And, I srael doesn't exist against all impossible odds again after 2000 years? And the E.U. isn't formed, and the U.S. isn't becoming insignificant with every atheistic, selfish decision our fearless leader is making by the day, and every single nation surround I srael doesn't want her 'wiped off the map,' and C hina can't field a 200-million man army *today* (there weren't 200-million people on the planet when this B iblical prophecy about the last generation was written), that we are definitely headed towards a one-world economy thanks to global greed and financial collapse, which isn't a far stretch to see us heading towards a one-world government right after that? I could go on and on and on – if I were you, I'd look into the FACTS of the B ible / G od's word a little more carefully before scoffing at the truth. ALL of the above facts PLUS (increase in number and intensity of earthquakes, natural disasters, famine, etc) were foretold to happen in the last generation and with increasing frequency and intensity – similar to child birth.) It takes an *AMAZING* amount of faith to be an atheist in light of the facts.
cdrDave. you nonsense dribble would be great bible passage. that's how rhetorical and worthless every word you said was.
@Rico, so, you ADMIT that you do not believe a single fact that I've presented you. Amazing. Keep believing the world is flat. Before you discount anything I believe, you have to prove ANYTHING (everything) I said is false (which you can't.) The hate towards the J ews is supernatural and has been since May 14, 1948. Look around you. It doesn't take much to see the truth if one actually *wants* to. Ignorance is bliss – and I mean that in a literal sense, not to be offensive.
It's instructive how vile, violence-advocating, haters tend to hate the idea of God.
It just goes to show that those who bully can't take it themselves and must walk out when facing criticism. How would they handle the bullying that gays must tolerate?
What's ironic is how these pretend "victims of bullying" turn out to be the true bullies.
Maggie, It gets real tiresome when we as Christians are all put in the same box. My church is open to anyone, regardless of how you think, act, look, were a con or whatever. Being a Christian means loving and treating others as you would have them treat you. Especially the bullied, the poor, the sick and the downtrodden. There are many more good people out there, liberal and conservative, then the atheists and agnostics such as yourself realize.
Bob – you don't get it do you? You think that by trying to appease the atheist haters by saying "oh wait, don't hate me I'm not like the other Christians", then that'll leave you off their target list? Think again. They hate you because you are Christian, not because of some particular openness to gays or others.
Who is this guy? Never heard of him. He might want to grow up some day – Peter Pan
