North Carolina pastor retracts sermon remarks about punching gay kids

By Stephen Walsh, CNN

(CNN) - A Fayetteville, North Carolina, pastor has retracted controversial language used during a weekend sermon in which he instructed parents to hit children who exhibited behavior associated with homosexuality.

“I apologize to anyone I have unintentionally offended,” Sean Harris, pastor of Berean Baptist Church wrote in a statement on his church’s website. “I did not say anything to intentionally offend anyone in the LGBT community.

“My intent was to communicate the truth of the Word of God concerning marriage,” the statement continued. “My words were not scripted. It is unfortunate I was not more careful and deliberate.”

Harris’s remarks at his church came a week before the state’s voters consider an amendment to North Carolina’s constitution limiting legal unions to marriage between a man and a woman.

"The second you see your son dropping that limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist," Harris said in the Sunday sermon. "Man up. Give him a good punch."

"You’re not going to act like that," the pastor advised parents to tell their children. "You were made by God to be a male and you are going to be a male.”

In an interview with the Fayetteville Observer, Harris said his comments were meant as a joke. In a video of the sermon posted online, laughter can be heard from some members of the congregation, as well as cries, of “Amen!” as the pastor spoke about responding to seemingly gay kids.

Berean Baptist explains its stance on discipline of children on its website:

“Remembering the love and forgiveness that God has shown them, parents in turn should train their children with the purpose of reflecting the Heavenly Father to their children. Parents should consider their responsibility to be the instrument of discipline in their child’s life (Prov. 19:18). At times this may include appropriate and reasonable physical means (Prov. 10:13) employed upon the fleshy portion of the child’s buttocks (Prov. 22:15; 23:13); that this method is to be viewed as correction rather than punishment (Prov. 23:13); and that this correction will result in the child’s physical and spiritual betterment.”

Harris told the Observer that from within his church, "the response was, 'Pastor, we know you didn't mean that.'"

Even Obama apparently just reversed his position on gay marriage.

Today Biden said he was "absolutely comfortable" with allowing same-sex couples to marry. Obama's spokesman Axelrod later confirmed that the president agrees with the vice president and that he thinks committed and loving same-sex couples deserve the same rights and protections enjoyed by all Americans.

It's never acceptable to punch your child or break his wrists, rather true Christians know parents are supposed to stone their disobedient children to death as in Deuteronomy 21:18-21.

Pastor Harris and every member of that congregation with children under the age of 18 should be investigated for possible child abuse. I know-without solid evidence, you can't just go around assuming ... but it's very likely that many in that church think that guy is speaking for God and will do whatever he tells them to do. There might even be one or two (the ones you can hear cheering) who even think the pastor is God's human form-and yes, will go home and beat their kids. Now, when they are charged with child abuse, I hope they tell the police, "PastorHarris told me to." Then call him to pay for their defense.

How do you know that they won't discover a gene which causes criminal tendencies? I knew a guy that told me he had to steal. He said "it's in my blood". He meant it. He hadn't been caught, so this wasn't an excuse given to a judge.

They've only scratched the surface in the science of genetics and are finding that genes control a lot more than was previously thought.

I believe they may also find one or more 'gay genes' in the future as well.

Hitchens: "Better to cut the limp wrist off at the elbow than keep it and enter hell with it."

This is one of the best comments i've read today because it is *exactly* what Jesus would say. Jesus is the great physician and unfortunately sometimes they have to amputate in order to save the life.

This means that the h o m o does a spiritual amputation, meaning that if he can't be se x ually normal, then he must *abstain from all se x* in order to keep from falling away.

Miracles are happening today and they do not make the paper. Too many atheists would ridicule the news org for 'going off the deep end' even if there was photo proof (anything can be faked, they'd say, photos, medical records, etc).

But the truth is that i was supernaturally healed and i also know a missionary who, while preaching the gospel in Romania, witnessed a miracle. A man whose eyes were totally filmed over with cataracts was instantly healed at the sermon event. The film just faded away in a matter of seconds and his sight was completely restored.

Bullsh!t!! Objective scientists would love to investigate miracles. The reason miracles are not reported as such is because they cannot stand the light of real scientific investigations. And as has been said many times, just because something cannot be explained, it does not mean that a god was responsible. To successfully claim that a god did it, you would have to prove the existence of the god first, otherwise your are making up bullsh!t supest!tions just as the goat herders 2,000+ years ago did.

People have to stop and remember something. Gays have been around since time began. If God didn't want that type of lifestyle, then God would not have made men and women gay forever. This is not something new, gays have been here always, look back at history. It's time we gave them what God gave them, acknowledgement.

      May 5, 2012 at 1:24 pm |
    • Primewonk

@ marusha – why would you compare being born gay (a natural normal variant of human sèxual orientation) with illegal activities? That does't make any sense.

Instead, you should compare being born gay to being born left-handed, geen-eyed, or blond.

Perhaps you should spend less time listening to the "Pastor Dave's" of the world and more time cracking open a science journal or two. The problem is that "Pastor Dave" is an îdiot.

Actuall Hitchens, the research shows that in patients undergoing CABG surgery, if they know they are being prayed for, the rates of complications are higher.

If prayer changes things, and Jesus said anything you ask for in god's name will be given you, and that if you have faith as small as a mustard seed you can literally move mountains, then WHY has god NEVER regenerated a severed limb? Does he hate amputees?

How is it Steve that you have first hand knowledge of every amputee from creation until now that you can tell us that none have ever regenerated ?

      @primewonk
      Ignorance of prayer noted.

Hitchens/herbie/jack ass: Don't you think that an amputee who had such an event occur would have been newsworthy? Don't you think you'd be able to find some report about such a "miracle"?

      Idiot.

      Tom,Tom
You got a lot of newsprint from 2500 B.C. ? On anything?

Dumbazz, you're the one who thinks the Bible is factual. Anything in there about an amputee growing a replacement limb?

You're beyond idiotic, dear. God didn't even give you a functioning cerebrum. How would he grow a new limb for anyone?

And even if some nut-job claimed that "godgrewmeanewarm" 2500 years ago, moron, why would that have been the most recent miraculous regeneration?

Don't you think that most people who lived 2500 years ago survived after losing a limb? These days, many people do-why isn't your phony-baloney sky fairy doing anything for them?

Come on, Hitchy Bit@hy, where's your response? You've had plenty of time to fabricate your formulaic "noted" post.

What, did you fall asleep, little boy?

I left this page as i didn't think anybody would be dumb enough to try to claim that prayer really works, but there you are! Slavery is justified in scripture, in fact the only time it's mentioned is as instruction to the slave to obey their masters or to the owners to not beat them too much, so how you can claim that Christianity or prayer would have anything to do in getting rid of it takes some major mental gymnastics. Then again that pretty much speaks for the entirety of Christianity. Sorry but it's just too much of a stretch for me to believe something just because as a child i was told it's so. Religion has to do better than that but it can't, so i guess i'll manage without it....ah well never mind!
