Delta pulls 'Daily Show' ads over 'vagina manger' skitBy Dan Gilgoff and Dave Alsup, CNN (CNN) - Delta Air Lines has pulled its advertising from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” over a skit in which Stewart featured a picture of a manger in between a naked woman’s legs, the company said Tuesday. In the April skit, Stewart jokingly encouraged women to use “vagina mangers” to “protect their reproductive organs from unwanted medical intrusions.” In a statement Tuesday, Delta Air Lines spokesperson Leslie Parker said that “We're always re-evaluating our advertising opportunities and updating our strategy in an effort to reach our desired audience.” “Delta doesn't discriminate nor do we condone discrimination in regard to age, race, nationality, sexual orientation, religion or gender,” Parker’s statement continued. She said that Delta made the decision to pull its ads on Thursday. CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories The Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights, a conservative group that has waged a weeks-long campaign pressuring Stewart to apologize for the skit, had pressured Delta and other Comedy Central advertisers to pull their Daily Show ads. Catholic League President Bill Donohue has encouraged a boycott of Kellogg’s because it has declined to pull its spots. On Tuesday, Donohue announced that he’d sent a letter to the leadership at Viacom, the corporate parent of Comedy Central, which airs “The Daily Show.” “You should be as offended as we are,” the letter said. “But if you are not, consider a picture of your own mother inserted there instead. Perhaps you now understand how the 80% of the nation that is Christian feel.” Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter “What Stewart did wasn’t a joke,” Donohue’s letter continued. “It was hate speech. We could have pressed for him to be fired, but we did not. All we want is an apology.” Media representatives at Comedy Central did not immediately respond to a request for comment. At a stand-up appearance in Florida last month, Stewart acknowledged the Catholic League’s campaign against him, according to the Tampa Bay Times. “I'm not going to censor myself to comfort your ignorance," Stewart said, decrying what he called the cable news-fueled “outrage machine.” |

Didn't realize Delta was an evangelical airline. Or a censor. I won't fly them either now.
What I might do is call and tie up one of their booking agents ffor 10 minutes or so, starting to make a reservation, and then cancel it at the end of the call, letting him know it's because of their attempt to censor the Daily Show. Hope lots of people do this. OCCUPY DELTA!
Prayer changes things .
And woman should all stay at home, we should all be killed for eating meat on Friday and live in stone houses, prayer changes nothing because only simpleminded people believe in a person in the sky.
No. No it doesn't.
My cat is an Atheist. Is he going to be okay? Keep in mind he is fixed.
The manger is clearly a Christian article. The joke is making fun of Christianity whether you believe in it or not.
Try that with sa copy of the Koran and see global outrage like you've never seen it before... including Obama. So shut up anti-Christians, you hypochrites!
anti-christians are hypocrites?
This coming from an illiterate! We won't shut up until the catholic church turns over the pedophiles for prosecution (bishop-accountability.org lists numerous peds from the catholic church) and until they learn that what happens in a persons home and what a woman does with her body is none of their damn business. When they learn the meaning of separation of church & state and learn the meaning of equal rights. Until then they deserve to be insulted. They are the true hypocrites of this world!
@truth(liar)prevails
Separation of church and state? There are no states in canada. Why should we listen to some qu-eer bait, foreign whiner about our issues.Your opinion on US is worth less than day old dog crap. There's your sign

If your so worried about seperation of church and state then why are you so worried about peds in the church. If the state and church are seperate then church business is none of yours. Truth is you and the rest of your fascist friends want to destroy the church and the country.
Hey joe
The pos is not even a citizen of this country. Tell it off early and often. An American with common sense is refreshing ! There's your sign
Jewish comedians, very predictable!
as predictable as anti-semitism?
Dononue and his Catholic League are far better at creating anti-catholics and anti-religionists than they are at fighting them.
Keep it up, Bill!
Go to sleep. You must be tired.
Being a Delta Diamond Medallion, their highest commercial flyer, and a major contributor to it's financial bottom line, and the boyfriend of one of it's top directors I will not be flying Delta until it reverses course and puts the ads back on. I also live in Atlanta where the city has adopted a domestic partner law into it's charter, and I know that Delta is going to get some very negative feedback from the political community here. I will be calling them in the morning I am also sure that the businesses that were weighing to move to Clt, or Atl will take their business to the big peach and leave the NC bigots to their own demise. Thanks North Carolina, we are happy you have taken your stance...., we will be laughing all the way to the bank!
...Snore
Me me me me I ii i i . Know one cares shut up and sit down.
hopefully not the blood bank. We dont want your AIDS.
How exactly do atheists force their beliefs on everyone...? What laws are they trying to push through congress? What rights are they trying to deny? They're not saying you can't worship or that that should be legally banned.
Atheists aren't as bad as true religious extremists, and I can't see any major examples of it. Hitler is the closest, but he wasn't an atheist. He thought he was a god. BIG difference.
Accually Hitler gave many speeches where he stated that his generation, including himself were flawed because they had mixed blood or heritage. Remember his definition of the master race did not look at all like him. Hard to think yourself a God and flawed at the same time.
It is unusual for non-religious people to want to deny rights to anyone.
Also Hitler was Catholic.
He also had Catholic Priest imprisoned and excuted in Concentration Camps.
Mark: Could you point to a reference point for your comment? Everyone is aware of what Hitler did to the Jewish people but Catholics is in question. Not arguing your point but would like to see the evidence for such a statement.
Stephen Colbert "You would have to be high to even watch John Stewart" and that is why you pull your ads form the daily show.
Here at Belta, for every ticket we sell, $1 goes to the Catholic Priest Child Molestation Defense Fund. These priests are only trying to express their love to these young boys. The defense helps protect the priests. Remember, the priest you save could be your very own.
Love you! you are my new superstar!!!!
thanks Delta ... great marketing move!!!!
Ah, the Catholic League! Hate speech is it? Well I suppose we do hate it when misogynistic, bronze age ignorance tries to force its way into a woman's doctor's office or in the bedroom. And, as ever, the religious do not 'turn the other cheek' nor do they 'pray for their enemies'. Rather they file complaints with HR and try to exact financial revenge when they do not feel they have been 'respected' enough. Funny how insecure people are who claim they have a deep and personal relationship with the creator of the universe.
And yet atheists do the same thing. Those who live in glass houses should not throw rocks.
I know even going as far as to steal a historical monument cross off of federal land because they want to have a temper tantrum. Pathetic losers.
Is it completely lost on Donohue that if it was not for assholes like him trying to shove their religion up innocent women's vaginas that decent people like Stewert would not even be in a position to have to defend basic human rights like access to safe legal abortion?
I am delighted Delta pulled ads ... totally agree ... it is about time. Thanks Delta and n8263 for your comments!
I am glad Delta pulled the ads also, I never realized hating women was a part of their business model, I will make sure not to use them in the future.
Conservative Catholic Group. That is what they were when Martin Luther had his come to Jesus talk with Pope Gregory 500 years ago.
I'm always re-evaluating my airline options. I have updated my strategy by committing to never flying Delta again.
...and if their flights were maybe a hundred or two or three hundred cheaper?
I'm a Christian. I thought the joke was crude and not very funny, but I wasn't offended by it. Donohue's wrong.
Ted is funny genius!
Viking sounds like a jihadist
This cuts both ways. THEY boycott Delta, Kelloggs, etc., WE boycott Delta, Kelloggs, etc right back. I have a feeling these strong-arm, freedom-HATING creeps need their crappy products more than I do anyway. I'M a Catholic and I think Donohue needs to get over himself. In fact, no one even knows for sure that Jesus Christ was born in a "manger". It was a stupid joke, that's all.
"Lesbian Dem Hilary Rosen tells Ann Romney she never worked a day in her life. Unlike Rosen, who had to adopt kids, Ann raised 5 of her own."
Direct quote from the catholic league's twitter feed, where they simultaneously managed to spew hate towards lesbians and adoptive parents. Yeah, they're exactly who to look to when searching for a moral compass.
Donahue is offending the other 20% of us by likening a manger to our own mothers!
