Delta pulls 'Daily Show' ads over 'vagina manger' skit

By Dan Gilgoff and Dave Alsup, CNN

(CNN) - Delta Air Lines has pulled its advertising from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” over a skit in which Stewart featured a picture of a manger in between a naked woman’s legs, the company said Tuesday.

In the April skit, Stewart jokingly encouraged women to use “vagina mangers” to “protect their reproductive organs from unwanted medical intrusions.”

In a statement Tuesday, Delta Air Lines spokesperson Leslie Parker said that “We're always re-evaluating our advertising opportunities and updating our strategy in an effort to reach our desired audience.”

“Delta doesn't discriminate nor do we condone discrimination in regard to age, race, nationality, sexual orientation, religion or gender,” Parker’s statement continued. She said that Delta made the decision to pull its ads on Thursday.

The Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights, a conservative group that has waged a weeks-long campaign pressuring Stewart to apologize for the skit, had pressured Delta and other Comedy Central advertisers to pull their Daily Show ads.

Catholic League President Bill Donohue has encouraged a boycott of Kellogg’s because it has declined to pull its spots.

On Tuesday, Donohue announced that he’d sent a letter to the leadership at Viacom, the corporate parent of Comedy Central, which airs “The Daily Show.”

“You should be as offended as we are,” the letter said. “But if you are not, consider a picture of your own mother inserted there instead. Perhaps you now understand how the 80% of the nation that is Christian feel.”

“What Stewart did wasn’t a joke,” Donohue’s letter continued. “It was hate speech. We could have pressed for him to be fired, but we did not. All we want is an apology.”

Media representatives at Comedy Central did not immediately respond to a request for comment. At a stand-up appearance in Florida last month, Stewart acknowledged the Catholic League’s campaign against him, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

“I'm not going to censor myself to comfort your ignorance," Stewart said, decrying what he called the cable news-fueled “outrage machine.”

Wait, so let me get this straight. Jon Stewart stood up for the rights of women to have control of their own bodies and their own lives. The Catholics took offense to this. Delta pulled ads from the show to prove that they don't discriminate against people based on religion or GENDER?

So the way to prove that you don't discriminate based on gender is to show disapproval of someone for rejecting gender-based discrimination?

Yeah, so Delta, let's talk about your public policy of lying through your teeth.

It's interesting that the Catholic Church wants an apology from Jon Stewart, but will not issue an apology on behalf of Peoria's Catholic Bishop Jenky who compared President Obama to Hitler and Stalin a few weeks ago during a Catholic church service. Furthermore, during the same service Jenky instructed his flock on how to vote in the upcoming presidential election. Talk about crossing the lines of separation of church and state. But all of the conservative catholics have defended their beloved bishop because of their belief that the Federal Gov has a war "war on Religion". Give me a break.

They probably don't want to pick on that guy as he might be coming out as a Catholic Pedophile...

Fellow Christians, it is not our job to judge anyone. Also, it's not our job to not have a sense of humor. If you were offended, pray for John Stewart and for those who were also offended. Let go and let God. It is not our job to condemn this. Get over yourselves. You aren't that important. All the glory goes to God.

Free speech means you get to be offensive. I doubt "The Catholic League" is The Daily Show"s target audience. I think it has more appeal for people of reason.

I agree. Let the Cathoholics listen to Rush and Sean for their daily dose of ignorance.

I'm sorry, but the picture accompanying this story, it looks like he's still enjoying something between some legs- his own. Almost there Jon? LOL Oh..question- why pick on the Catholics? Becasue they will only seek a boycott? Show us some backbone- pull a Salman Rushdi and try your stuff on a religious group willing to escort you to the after life. Yuh...pick on the wimps...the guys who forgive- turn the other cheek...maybe boycott. But the big boys??? Jon...your just a bulley Jon. . 🙂

Why pick on Catholics. Because they are the most close-minded people on the face of the earth. How could anyone pay ANY attention to that group of enablers to child molestation?

Have you ever actually -watched- the Daily Show? Stewart wasn't picking on Catholics with that skit. But one specific faction of them (not ALL of them) was offended. A specific group that seems to really, really, enjoy getting offended and trying to bully people into doing what THEY think is the biblical right. As for Stewbeef picking on religions, watch the show. He's an equal opportunity offender. Sad thing is the catholic league's behavior is just the sort of thing his target audience finds so appalling – and amusing when he calls them on it.

wow. what amazing rose colored glasses you have. "Why pick on Catholics?" "the wimps?" - First of all, Jon Stewart has 'picked on' virtually every religion on the planet. He is a COMEDIAN, it's what he does. Secondly: Read your history. the Catholics are responsible for so many wars, and so much death and destruction and tyranny and intolerance that they can hardly be classified as wimps. add to that that they are the single largest religion in the world, and you've got your panties in a bunch once again without even thinking - also a forte of the Catholics. Thank you for publicly displaying your unbridled ignorance.

Hahaha...Hey, the man clearly never got over his oedipus complex. You all take him so literal. The church is his father, Mary his mom and what is going on between her/his legs is ...well...read Freud! LOL. This stuff doesn't just come from an imagination...it comes from life...his life. People love tio think we can 'just create' but the bottom line is we deal with our lives in everythng we do and how we see it, others and ourselves. He's got skeletons! LOL

John Stewart LOL...whenever I see is post self-grtifying accomplishment smile I have to think of him as a Farrelly Brothers character. There is nothing about the guy that calls for the use of a brain cell so it is almost impossible to get abgry with him or to laugh with him becaseu I am too busy laughing at what and who he is. It's sad. He has the Michael Jackson complex. Others adore you and you slowly lose touch with reality. It would be sad if it wasn;t so humorous as to what these people do and how they see themselves in that situation. At least Michael was exceptionally talented and he was a child when he was a dored. You would think an adult could handle it but...apparently not! Hahahaha.

Delta should be shut down until they recognize the meaning of free speech. While we're at it let's shut down the Catholic Church, especially their dress-wearing leader, the pope.

Okay Delta you dropped your ads because of complaints by the the catholic league ? Well I 'm not going to use your Airline because you folded to a bunch of bigots ! What's good for you to do is good for me to do and I'll try and convince as many others to not use your Airline as well.

OK...let me get this straight. You are a person who takes action against those who would offend or mistreat others. I can see that. Thus the removing you fanny from a Delta seat you may or may not have ever filled. So, I am not sure why you decided not to stand up for those Stewart purposely meant to offend in order for him to make enough money to remain in the top 1%. I wonder, would you stand up for the bully or the bullied if given the chance or would it depend on ther religious views? And i wonder, do you view yourself as a tolerant person or have do you see that others simply deprive you of being tolerabnt by being as they are? Now, I'm a bigot so I recognize one when I see one- welcome to the club.

I hear Afghan National is the best airline for people like you. Instead of a cushion under the seat, their backup is the magic carpet surrounded by seven virgin "steward"esses.
