Evangelical leader Tony Perkins knocks Rand Paul's 'gay' remark

By Becky Perlow, CNN

Washington (CNN) - You may disagree with it, but you shouldn’t make fun of it.

That’s what conservative Family Research Council president Tony Perkins told CBS’s "Face the Nation" on Sunday about U.S. Sen. Rand Paul’s arguably derogatory use of the term “gay.”

“The president, you know, recently weighed in on marriage,” Paul, a Kentucky Republican, remarked to the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition, a conservative group, on Friday. “And, you know, he said that his views were evolving on marriage. And call me cynical, but I wasn’t sure that his views on marriage could get any gayer.”

The audience burst into a laughter that echoed all the way to the Sunday talk show tables, where opposing sides weighed in, from gay rights activist and singer Clay Aiken to Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

But Perkins’criticism of Paul’s comments was noteworthy because Perkins is one of the nation’s best-known opponents of same-sex marriage and of gay rights more broadly.

CNN’s Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

Condemning Paul’s remarks on Sunday, Perkins said the debate over homosexuality and same-sex marriage is not “a laughing matter.”

“I don’t think this is something we should joke about,” Perkins said on "Face the Nation." “We are talking about individuals who feel very strongly one way or the other, and I think we should be civil, respectful, allowing all sides to have the debate.”

While Perkins’ comments caught many by surprise, Aaron McQuade, director of news and field media for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, said he doesn’t believe Perkins was defending the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

“I think he was saying that he takes this issue so seriously that it’s not okay to make light of it, even if you also oppose it the way he does,” McQuade said in a phone interview.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

“This is not a man who represents the 40-whatever percent of the country that does not support marriage equality,” McQuade said. “This is a man who represents a tiny, tiny, fraction of Americans who believes, as he does, that gay people have an emptiness within them. That they are abnormal.”

The Family Research Council did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

McQuade also said it was hard to tell what Paul meant by using the word “gayer.” “If that same comment was made by someone with a more pro-LGBT history, it likely would not be taken negatively,” he said.

On CNN’s "State of the Union" on Sunday, Perkins told chief political correspondent Candy Crowley that opposition to same-sex marriage shouldn’t be the “central point” of presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s campaign. But Perkins also admitted frustration with Capitol Hill Republicans who are portraying the issue as a political distraction.

“Defending the family, the cornerstone of civilization, is not a distraction,” he said, while stressing that the economy and jobs are also key issues in this election. “It should be a priority, and it should be a part of what Mitt Romney talks about.”

Question is: Where did you learn that phrase? I have never heard that phrase before. Besides, your argument makes no sense. Where in the Bible have you read the words cynical, asinine or just plain imbecelic?

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-IV-TR), it is classified under 302.9 Para philia Not Otherwise Specified and has no diagnostic criteria other than a general statement about para philias that says "the diagnosis is made if the behavior, exual urges, or fantasies cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning". Furthermore, the DSM-IV-TR notes, "Fantasies, behaviors, or objects are para philic only when they lead to clinically significant distress or impairment (e.g. are obligatory, result in exual dysfunction, require participation of nonconsenting individuals, lead to legal complications, interfere with social relationships)".

I know facts are difficult for you but realize that the inability to deal with it refers to the patient, not the bystanders or society. If the person has issues dealing with something, anything then they should seek treatment. However, just because you can't deal with it doesn't make it a problem for the gay community.

sodomy is great. my wife and i have a.nal s.ex as a regular part of our s.ex life. she says she orgasms in a completely different way.

have you tried it? sounds like maybe you have and had a bad experience. next time tell your partner he has to go slow at first, be gentle. he should talk to you and help you relax. and be very generous with the lubrication. you really can't have too much.

"We are talking about individuals who feel very strongly one way or the other, and I think we should be civil, respectful, allowing all sides to have the debate."

I'm so sick of religious people trying to appear empathetic while still considering gay people in general something that will destroy civilization.

Religion offers people like Perkins the perfect mask – they can spew their hatred and bigotry, and then turn to their followers and claim they are doing the right thing because that's what "god" says.

In the end, it's just more of the same – religious people brainwashed into believing that the more horrible they are to gay people, the better chance they'll have of getting into heaven.

I don't want to deal with them at all, they are the ones crying, I wish they would just go away, but they will not. They have all the rights they need, they should leave marriage alone, if they do not, maybe they will get more attention then they wanted.

Rights are about equality, and marriage equality is about equality, therefore, gay rights are civil rights

    • LOL

This is absurd. If a man wants to marry a child, is that a civil rights too?

How about 2 wives? That's a civil rights too, eh?

To have government decide on marriage is stupid. 31 states, including CALIFORNIA when the issue was voted, all voted against gay marriage. No wonder Obam'as rating is now 42% versus Romney's 50% in the latest Rasmussen poll. Keep it up and we'll win it in a landslide. I guess Obama likes to come from behind, maybe, lol.

      "Gays are mentally sick people"

The experts have proven you WRONG. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of SocialWorkers, together representing more than 480,000 mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus is not something that needs to or can be “cured."

Don't get yourself in too much of a tizzy, folks. Beep Beep is merely trolling. He probably doesn't even have a problem with gay people (or is just closeted himself) as much as he's an immature. passive aggressive type who just likes to get a rise out of people. Mission accomplished, thanks to all the other commenters blowing their stacks in response to him. The other funny part is that Bama Daniel, who agrees with Beep Beep, isn't a fellow troll. He's buying into Beep Beep just like the rest of you, but even worse- bama's coming from the perspective of looking *up* to Beep. Shudder. All I know is- #1- there's nothing wrong with gay people getting married and, if you have a problem with it, you're insecure in your own life, PERIOD. And #2 – Beep Beep is closeted, Bama is clueless, and the angry respondents are taking the bait.
